I dont know who banksy is, but id be really uncomfortable with rats climbing all over my bathroom. Not pretty. Stepping on the toothpaste. You and me both. From our homes to yours, were staying home and we hope youre staying home, too, even though its a friday and the weekend. Please stay home. We begin with this. Many members of the house wore face mask and practiced social distancing while voting for the bill which passed almost unanimously. It includes 484 billion in funds with help for hospitals and Small Businesses. Anthony . Today also marks the start of an experiment, gayle, for at least three states in partially reopening as the National Death toll climbs to about 50,000 people. They include alaska, oklahoma and georgia. Mark strassmann is in atlanta. Mark, are folks there comfortable with this . Well, were going to find out today, anthony. Well see who shows up to these businesses that are going to open. Salons are among the businesses allowed to reopen. This one behind me is going to go for it. Its a controversial decision by the georgia Governor Brian Kemp, and even his fellow republicans, including President Trump, have lit into him for it. I think locals needed to have more input. Its made people nervous. Reporter Georgia Republican congressman doug collins is questioning his republican Governor Brian Kemp for his decision to open parts of the states economy this morning. It is a scary time to be opening back up. Reporter jason griggers opens escape hair salon outside of tlntatlanta. Hes reopening his doors. The biggest concern is something is going to come in here, be asymptomatic, have the virus and is going to pass it to one of us or to one ever our clients. Reporter President Trump again criticized georgias governor for his decision to reopen the states economy. Im not happy about it, and im not happy about brian kemp. Even states that have yet to lift restrictions are seeing more people out in public. In orange county, california, about 9,000 people crowded Huntington Beach on thursday. I worry a little bit about social distancing because clearly its not happening. Reporter in new york, as new hospitalization rates slowly drop, the political battle over a federal bailout for states hit hard by the outbreak is heating up. How ugly a thought . Reporter new York Governor Andrew Cuomo hit back at kentucky senator mitch mcconnell. The majority leader suggested states could declare bankruptcy rather than getting more federal dollars. Referring to that option as blue state bailouts. Just think of what he is saying. People died. 15,000 people died in new york. But they were predominantly democrats so why should we help them . Reporter the latest stimulus bill passed by congress does not include money for state funding. The Midwest Center for investigative reporting says about 3400 reported positive covid cases are tied to the meatpacking industry across 23 states, including nebraska. Governor pete rickets. Try to keep distancing at the same time. Reporter many Business Owners reopening today are skittish about it. A different salon than this one is making customers sign this waiver. Its essentially a promise that if you come down with covid19, you wont sue. Tony . Scary to reopen but scary economically to stay closed. Mark, thank you very much. Moving to washington, President Trump is making some potentially dangerous new suggestions for fighting the coronavirus. At his latest briefing, he talked about possibly injecting disinfectant into peoples bodies though he later partially walked that back. The president also floated the idea of getting bright light, like uv rays, into the body after hearing its bad for the virus. This is not the first time hes pushed treatments without his medical teams endorsement. Weijia jiang is at the white house for us. Good morning. At one point the president said hes up there just trying to present ideas but these idea do not have the endorsement of medical experts. President trump indicated this came from his own head, and he said it would be a good idea to look at a possible treatment. But as you mentioned, stressed, he was just throwing it out there as a suggestion. The president made these remarks after an official with the office of dhs presented a study showing sunlight, heat and humidity along with disinfectants degraded the virus on surfaces and in the air. Im just here to present talent. Im here to present ideas. Reporter President Trump called on bill bryan, a department of Homeland Security official to outline early results from a study that showed the effect of heat on the virus. Our most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus both surfaces and in the air. Weve seen a similar effect with both temperature and humidity as well. Reporter but bryan also said americans should still follow cdc guidance on social distancing and personal health practices. Can you explain why some hot spots weve seen in the u. S. Are hot and humid, like new orleans, for example . Weve identified that heat and humidity is a weakness in that chain. Weve identified that sunlight, solar light, uv rays is a weakness in that chain. That doesnt take away the other activities, the guidance from the white house, the guidance from the cdc and others on the actions and steps people need to take to protect themselves. Reporter cbs news medical contributor dr. David agus said the study shows promise, but isnt a cureall. We still have to practice social distancing. We still have to wear masks. But you tie together masks, social distancing and the changes that happen in the summer outdoors, and i think we will be on offense against this virus, and my hope is well get significantly decreased cases over the summer. Reporter having heard the findings, the president has suggestions for treatments for patients. Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether its ultra violet or just very powerful light. And then i see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do Something Like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning . I would like you to speak to the medical doctors to see if theres any way that you can apply light and heat to cure. Have you ever heard of that . The heat and the light relative to certain viruses, yes, but relative to this virus . Not as a treatment. After all this unfolded, medical expert s swiftly and strongly urged people not to improperly use disinfectants, and the manufacturer of lysol says in a statement, under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body. Gayle . Very good advice. We have to say its so important to follow the advice of doctors and medical experts. I think weijia, a lot of people felt for dr. Birx. She looked like she was trying to hold her face on straight there. Please, please, please, follow the advice of doctors and medical experts. Weijia, thank you. About 1 in 6 american workers, more than 26 million people, have filed for Unemployment Benefits in the past few weeks. Earlier this year, we began following four Kansas Aerospace workers who were laid off when boeing suspended production of the 737 max jet. They were finding the job hunt very difficult before the coronavirus hit. Now it is allout crisis. Kris van cleave has the story. Its bleak right now. Its a scary time to be without a job. It really is. Its a scary time to be without insurance. Reporter chris jump got laid off as an Airline Mechanic just weeks before coronavirus shut down much of the economy. If we hadnt got the stimulus check, i dont think we would have paid rent this month. Reporter its been a long, frustrating search. We first met the father of four at a job hunt in wichita, kansas in february and the options werent great then. You have to go away from your family . Its not a permanent job . No. Trying to get 18. Ill have to find two jobs to make the money that i was making in order to keep my house. If it comes down to buying food for my kids or insulin for myself, im picking food for my kids. You are talking about picking between your medicine and food for the family. Scared. Diabetes almost killed me two years ago, but im not going to tell my kid, hey, you cant have no spaghetti tonight because dad needs insulin. No. That kid is going to get a meal until dad is laying in the ground. Reporter we talked with four Aerospace Engineers before social distancing was in place. All were scrambling to find work. Their severance has won out and insurance will end next week. All four are still unemployed. How many of you have kids to support and how many of you feel like you have the savings to get you through until you find the next right job . Not even going to happen. Reporter Carol Edwards is taking care of her daughter and four grandkids. Shes been waiting three weeks for an unemployment check and cant wait much longer. I have like 400 left. My grandkids dont understand why i cry. Why were struggling and why theres very little food in the house. Reporter rent is due again next friday. Carol worries she could lose everything. What is your hope for being able to find another job . Slim to none right now. So im between a rock and a hard place. With nowhere to go. I feel like im drowning. Reporter the sad truth is the job market in wichita, like so many places, is virtually frozen right now. Were reaching out to the state of kansas trying to figure out why carols unemployment checks have been so delayed. Anthony . Yeah, heartbreaking for those families, kris. And theyre skilled workers, too, who cant find work. The pandemic is hitting latinos in the u. S. Particularly hard. Latinos account for more than 27 of deaths in coronavirus hot spots. But only about 18 of the population. And as adriana diaz shows us, the virus is also taking a financial toll on the community. Reporter in chicagos latino neighborhood of pilsen, people out of work and out of options line up hours early at this food pantry. At this point, demand has outgrown our supply. Reporter family physician dr. Evelyn figueroa opened the pantry two years ago, but demand is up by almost 50 . Just as weve been standing here, ive seen people join the line. This tells us that people are really theyre really on the fringe. How are you managing . Its a lot of word and mouth and hustle. Reporter 49 of latino households have seen job losses or pay cuts in this pandemic. Latinos who still have a job face increased exposure to the virus because only 16 can work from home. The fewest of any ethnic group or race. People like this cleaning lady who we agreed not to name because shes undocumented. She said, i wouldnt be able to take it if i brought this virus home to my children, especially because my son has asthma. So shes decided to stay at home, but now she and her husband, who works construction, have no income. And because theyre undocumented, they dont qualify for unemployment, food stamps or the federal stimulus. First generation american Jose Gonzalez whose parents are from mexico, is also worried about getting his daughter sick. He works as a cook at a Hotel Housing covid patients. We dont have the benefit of, i should just stay home to, you know, not carry on such a high risk. I feel like thats every latino at this point. Essential workers in many different domains are disproportionately made up of latinos and others of color. They dont get the luxury of selfisolating and staying home and flattening the curve. They have to go out and work to get paid. Reporter adriana diaz, chicago. The first human trials of a Coronavirus Vaccine in europe are taking place in britain. This is a significant step with several countries racing to find ways to fight the illness now blamed for more than 191,000 deaths worldwide. Imtiaz tyab looks at the highly anticipated new study. Reporter it may just be one small shot, but its possibly one giant leap in the fight against the coronavirus. In britain, Alyssa Renato is the first to receive this vaccine. Im a scientist. I want to support the scientific process whenever i can. Reporter human trials like this would normally take years to develop. But its been achieved in just three months by the experienced team of scientists at Oxford University who say not only does this vaccine have an 80 chance of being effective, it could be ready for use as early as september. I have a high degree of confidence about this vaccine because its technology that ive used before. Of course, we have to test it. Reporter until a vaccine is found, countries desperate to reopen their economies may look to sweden. The scand nafian nation has kept its schools and businesses open to help the general population build immunity. A goal they believe they are within weeks of. Still, more than 2,000 people have died there which is hundreds more than neighboring countries with tighter controls. We are not telling people to stay indoors. I think thats a very important part of our policy. Reporter back in oxford, scientists concede the only way theyll know for sure if their vaccine is a success is if lots of volunteers are exposed to the coronavirus. But with the uk still under strict lockdown, the irony is, you need to go somewhere like sweden to do that. For cbs this morning, imtiaz tyab, london. Theres new information that the actual number of coronavirus victims is larger than the number of reported cases because of insufficient testing. And that the virus hit much earlier than believed. On march 1st, here in new york city, only had 1 reported case of covid19. But an analysis using a new Research Model estimates there were around 10,000 infections by that same day. Ahead, well take a closer look at that model and new testing that seems to show 1 out of 5 people in the city has been exposed to the vo pro plan liveclear, a breakthrough 10 years in the making that reduces allergens in cat hair and dander. Outstanding nutrition with the power to change lives. This is purina pro plan liveclear. We have muc we have much more news ahead including this. An restaurant returns from quarantine. It feels strange and equally strange to arrive back on a completely different planet from the one we left. How she was caught by surprise on her return by all the people wearing masks. Youre watching cbs this morning. For most patients that have sensitivity its very common to have a gum Health Concern as well. But if you have sensitive teeth, you probably arent going to brush your teeth as effectivity because it causes pain. And if you see blood you should do something about it. You know, i talk to dentists every day and theyre able to recommend one product, new sensodyne sensitivity gum, to address both conditions at the same time. If we only treat one versus the other, the patients mouth is never going to be where it needs to be. Its really good dentistry to be able to recommend one product for patients that can address two conditions. [under pressure by queen pressure pushing down on me pressing down on you, no man ask for its the terror of knowing what the world is about.
