Hi reporter and in a new york nursing home, theres now a touching notouch reunion through the glass. We thought why cant we bring our families to us, create this tent, make a comfortable area, set it up so that the families could see each other and really bring that emotional piece back to them. Reporter a phone line that allows loved ones to say what needs to be said. I love you very much. Reporter and as we see signs of hope, theres still a terrible human cost to this crisis. Today the number of americans killed by the coronavirus tops 77,000. Jech . All right, thank you very much. As mentioned earlier, unemployment numbers for the month of april were released on friday. They were staggering by any measure. Here to talk about the numbers and more, Senior Business analyst jill schlesinger. Jill, good morning to you. The job loss numbers staggering. Were still not seeing the full extent of all this. Thats right. Remember, the jobs report takes place, the two surveys, in the first half of the month. We certainly know that the second half of the month will bring far more people on to the unemployment rolls. And by many measures, it looks like that Unemployment Rate underestimates the true depth of these problems. And here is why if you are not actively seeking work, you are not considered part of the labor force. Well, a lot of people who were surveyed said im not looking for work, im not supposed to be out looking for work. That actually kept the Unemployment Rate artificially low. When we look at the broader Unemployment Rate which is more far reaching, that number is close to 23 . And you know what, that number is agonizing to look at. We have not seen numbers like that since the great depression. This is ten times the worst single month right after world war ii, 25 times worse a single month than we saw in the great depression. In the april report, wages were up. How does that work . So strange because you would say how is that possible . Unfortunately, there is not good news. Its this is not good news. Its because the number of people who were lowwage earners were disproportionately impacted. They came out of the labor force, and then everybody else was left in, it appears they got a wage increase. This is obviously really not the true picture of the labor market right now. Also jill, worth pointing out that Unemployment Benefits and guidelines vary widely from state to state. Why is that, and what effect does that have . Its very strange in the United States. Its unlike many other developed nations. We have a blended approach, a state and federal system where essentially as long as the states follow general guidelines that the government puts out, it can make decisions about eligibility for unemployment, length of unemployment, and so we have many areas where people are going to see their Unemployment Benefits basically run out just within a few months. Other areas of the country, they could last for longer. One good piece of information, of course, is that those enhanced Unemployment Benefits from the federal government, those last through july. Thats that extra 600 a week. Weve talked about some of the businesses that were affected right off the bat. The biggest probably being the Restaurant Industry. What are the latest industries and jobs that have been going ax way . You know, weve been talking a lot about the what happens to retail. We had two big retailers file for chapter 11 bankruptcy this week. We had the high end, right, in neiman marcus, and then we had j. Crew, two very significant retailers. Now its unclear how many of their stores will reopen when they come out of bankruptcy. There are going to be additional layoffs. We also saw Silicon Valley be impacted for the first time pretty significantly. A quarter of airbnb workers let go. 17 of lyft workers furloughed or laid off. And then theres uber where theres 14 of its work force cut. So its deep, its troubling, and will hopefully get better in the next few months, jeff. Jill schlesinger, thank you very much. Michelle, over to you. New questions are being raised this morning about the trump administrations response to the coronavirus. A government scientist who was removed from his job is speaking out and claims he was pushed out for raising alarms about just how poor the u. S. Response was to covid19. Cbs news has learned the personal assistant of ivanka trump is among the latest to test positive for coronavirus. This after the Vice President s press secretary, katie miller, was diagnosed. She thanked well wishers friday night tweeting, im doing well and look forward to getting back to work for the american people. Shes a wonderful young woman. And today she tested positive. She hasnt come into contact with me. Reporter miller is the wife of senior president ial adviser steven miller. Earlier this week, a member of the president s personal military valet also tested positive. The white house insists its taking precautions, but the Vice President did not wear a mask during a trip to iowa. The president didnt wear one either at a washington ceremony for world war ii veterans. The wind was blowing so hard and such a direction that if the plague ever reached them, id be very surprised. We need to conduct trials reporter after raising red flags about the administrations pandemic response, whistleblower dr. Rick bright spoke for the first time to 60 minutes. The former vaccine official claims he was removed from his job for putting science over politics. Friday a federal watchdog recommended he be reinstated. Im director. To take me out of our organization focused on drugs and vaccines and diagnostics in the middle of a pandemic the worst publichealth crisis that our country has faced in a century and decapitate the barta organization, to move me to a small focused project of any scale, of any level of importance, is not responsible. Doesnt make sense. Reporter this week the government started shipping remdesivir, but concerns have emerged that the drug cleared for emergency use in Covid Patients has been slow to reach some hospitals. Right now i think theres a lot of confusion of how to distribute it. Reporter fema says the drug has been sent out to seven states, but the next round will be handled by the department of health and human services. The white house says that Task Force Member dr. Deborah birx will also help to coordinate distribution. Back to you, dana. Nikole killion, thank you. [ gunshot ] cell phone video of the incident shows the mcmichaels try to block arbery which led to a physical confrontation with travis who was holding a shotgun. Arbery was shot twice and stumbled to the ground. Questions remain on if the man who shot the video, william bryant, will face charges. Arberys mother was stunned when she learned of the arrests. We waited over two months, and they hadnt been arrested. And gbi had it for, what, two days, and i was it was a shock. It was really a shock. Reporter did you worry that your prayers were not going to be answered . Im going to be honest, at times my faith was tested. At the end of the day i knew that he would come through. Reporter arberys mother says she probably wont watch the video. Its too pain follow. Theres a 2. Painful. Theres a 2. 23 mile run, thats february 23rd, the day that arbery was killed. For cbs this Morning Saturday, omar villafranca, dallas. Weird winterlike weather is hitting parts of the country this mothers day weekend. Freeze watches and warnings are in effect from the midwest to the northeast. The system has already brought rare may snowfall. Hunter, new york, about 120 miles north of new york city, looked more like a Winter Wonderland on friday night. Look at that. A significant amount of snow stuck to trees and covered roofs overnight. Meteorologist Jeff Berardelli joins us with more on the nations weather. Jeff, my friend, it is midmay. Whats happening . Its disorienting. I think the polar vortex might be disoriented like the rest of us. It is strange because typically the polar vortex may visit a few times during the wintertime. It almost never comes down in may. As a result, we have dozens and dozens of records being shattered in the eastern part of the country. Meanwhile, along the west coast, we have a big ridge of high pressure, its really warm in california all the way up to alaska. Temperatures right now in anchorage are 47 degrees. Temperatures in the ohio valley and the northeast are in the 20s and 30s. Windchills each coeven windchills even colder than that. Well show the windchills through the day. We should get to around 58, 59, 60 degrees. Do not put those coats away. Jeff, would you believe it, we are going to see temperatures plummet again on tuesday morning. Likely were going to see about 40 to 50 record lows shattered again. Some places if they get snow this week it would set a record for this late in the season. In new york city at central park this morning, it was tied for the latest snowfall weve ever seen. If we had gotten over a trace, it would have broken the record for may. What is going . All right.
