And a truck plunges into a bay area lake. Why one person inside the vehicle made it to shore and then turned back only to disappear. Kpix 5s Andrea Nakano is at lake merritt in oakland tonight where extra patrols will make sure people are keeping their distance. Reporter the lake will not be closed, but the parking lots around the lake will be blocked off to the public. Also, city park ambassadors will be here to remind people of the social distancing guidelines. The lake is one of the premier venues for that. And so i think were going to see a bunch of people come down to try to celebrate the holiday. Reporter many people may be thinking just like oakland resident mark frey, although they follow the social distancing guidelines and wear masks. Hes worried about the select few that dont. I think most people are being responsible, but of course theres a few that want to go their own way. Reporter oakland mayor libby schaaf continues to promote the message of give the lake a break. The slogan came about after dense crowds were seen on a warm sunday afternoon on april 26th. The mayor laid out some guidelines regarding park use during a virtual town hall meeting tonight. We are not allowing any sort of vending in any of our parks. We have closed parking lots at all of our parks. But we have opened up a number of streets to our slow street movement. Reporter according to the city of oakland, officers will also be monitoring the traffic along the lake merritt area. Those who live around the lake hope people from out of the area wont come in and ruin the weekend for local residents. Hopefully there wont be a lot of crowds and people will just be smart and use common sense. We see already that the numbers really havent gone down in alameda county. So i would say lets keep it going until we can get those numbers down. Reporter and its not just in oakland. Many of the parking lots at parks will be closed this weekend even though phase two of the reopening process has started in some counties. In oakland, Andrea Nakano, kpix 5. In San Francisco, chalk rings have suddenly appeared at parks, ranging from Mission Dolores to Washington Square park. All spaced six feet apart. Theyre intended to promote social distancing heading into the holiday weekend. Well, a cool night along the bay, but things will be heating up as we head into that holiday weekend, as we mentioned. Lets check in with paul for a look at the memorial day forecast. Hi, paul. Hey, liz, its going to be hot by monday. Now, were not talking about july, august heat where inland temperatures reach triple digits, how much we warm up depends on which of the bay area microclimates you live in, but everyone is in for above average temperatures on monday. Everybody starts on an even playing field. Mid60s at 8 00 in the morning. Inland in the 80s by noon. High temperatures in the mid 90s. Around the bay, temperatures in the upper 70s. Well above normal for late may. Along the coast, temperatures are going to threaten 70 degrees right around noon, 1 00 in the afternoon. Were still going to have an onshore breeze, not too strong. Its going to bring temperatures down by the bay and along the coast later in the day on memorial day. Those inland spots, it is definitely going to be toasty. Of course, the warmup isnt going to happen all a oayet now and memorial day coming up in the forecast. Sounds great. Thanks, paul. A man who drowned tonight after his pickup truck ran into a novato pond may have died trying to save his dog. It happened in the bell marin keys area. A man and woman initially made it out. After they got out, it appears they were holding on to the back of the pickup truck while the dog was swimming away. It appears one of the occupants got in the water to chase the dog. That man went under and never came back up. A dive team found his body about two hours ago along with the dogs. The woman was rescued and taken to the hospital. In a few hours, Santa Clara County will become the last in the bay area to move to phase two of reopening. That means businesses will be allowed to open for Curbside Pickup. Kpix 5s Katie Nielsen spoke with some Small Business owners tonight about whether it will be enough. Reporter four days after the rest of the bay area shops here in campbell and across Santa Clara County will be able to open for Curbside Pickup starting tomorrow. But many retailers say they dont know what its going to do for their sales. She doesnt like this color that i like. Reporter brook ramirez and her 7yearold daughter taylor are putting a new coat of paint on the walls of her store, bombshell boutique, to spruce it up before theyre able to open tomorrow. Im really excited to see customers in person. So that part im extremely excited to see them drive up, see their faces. Even if im just running a bag out to their car. Reporter she says the majority of her business is from people coming into the store and trying on clothes. Brook estimates her sales are down more than 80 and shes not sure this move to the next phase is going to help. I would not imagine that there is going to be a huge bump just from curbside. County is allowing stores to open tomorrow for Curbside Pickup so long as workers and customers are Wearing Masks and are appropriately socially distanced. Some essential stores like mikes bikes in san jose have been open for weeks and stay this new reality of retail is a struggle. Were talking to Customer Service and helping people out doing everything we can to go the extra mile, but you know, when a lady wants her bike loaded into her car and we have to say no, it hurts us. But the city of san jose could actually take it a step further by requiring masks for everyone any time theyre outside t hometync is expected to decide on that proposal sometime the beginning of june. In campbell, Katie Nielsen, kpix 5. And in solano county, they are pushing further ahead into phase two of reopening more businesses. More will be allowed to welcome customers as early as tomorrow morning. And they include Retail Stores, customers can go inside. Malls, dinein restaurants and offices. Those businesses will have to meet the safe strict guidelines for reopening and find ways to ensure customers and employees can maintain social distancing. They can begin operations starting at 6 00 a. M. Meanwhile, california saw a sharp rise in unemployment claims after falling for several weeks. More than 246,000 californians filed initial claims for jobless benefits last week. Thats up 16 from the previous week. Economists say the numbers highlight weakness in the states job market. California lawmakers meanwhile are expressing mounting frustration with the state agency tasked with processing unemployment claims. At a hearing today, lawmakers grilled the director of the Employment Development department about why so many people were having problems getting help. Meanwhile, in oakland, city officials are updating their slow street routes. The idea is to give locals safer access to essential places like Grocery Stores and testing sites. Most of those changes will be in east oakland. The mayor is expected to announce more details tomorrow. First responders are preparing to keep an eye on bay area beaches this holiday weekend. Officials want to remind beach goers to know their limits since rescuers are also put at risk when they have to go in and save somebody.
