Protests exploded in minneapolis and in cities across this nation as the anger builds over the deadly arrest of george floyd. Bail was set at half a Million Dollars for fired Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin who was arrested friday. Chauvin is facing thirddegree murder and manslaughter charges in connection with floyds death. The other three fired officers have not yet been charged. In the throes of a global pandemic, hundreds of maskwearing demonstrators took to the streets of minneapolis demanding justice for a fourth night. Cars were torched, and businesses were burned as the governor and mayor implored residents overnight to stop burning down the city. In new york city, several dozen protesters were arrested. Police cars were vandalized, and there were clashes with officers as demonstrators marched through the streets. In georgia, the governor there declared a state of emergency for Fulton County after violent protests erupted on the streets of atlanta. Attacks targeted police and the front windows of cnn. Jeff pegues begins our coverage in minneapolis, the epicenter of the unrest. Jeff, good morning. Reporter yeah, good morning. Listen, if officials here expected the arrests to calm things down, well, that didnt happen. Take a look behind me here. We have more fires in the city of minneapolis. Escalation overnight. Firefighters are here trying to douse the flames that have been spreading through this neighborhood. Take a look down here. And you see this large contingent of firefighters, you have burned out cars. And the concern is the flames and the smoke could do more damage. Now the firefighters, they couldnt do their jobs without this line of security. This is the National Guard trying to help out, as well. With minutes to go before the 8 00 p. M. Curfew, demonstrators continued to defy police. Once again, there were clashes. For yet another night, fires were set and property destroyed. The states governor begged for calm you need to go home. The purpose. This, and were seeing it spread up across the country, is making it more difficult to get to the point where we can deal with these issues. Reporter derek chauf ins arrest didnt seem to calm tensions. A thirddegree murder charge was announced and seconddegree manslaughter. There case has moved with extraordinary speed. I cant breathe. Hes talking reporter floyds case struck a nerve in part because it was captured on a cell phone camera. Chauvin was seen pressing his knee into the 46yearolds neck for more than eight minutes while. While chauvins in custody, the investigation into other officers involved have issues. I think we should have the other three officers arrested, as well. Reporter Courtney Ross describes george floyd as one big muscle. A 66 gentle giant who she says was no stranger to police profiling. We have one step toward justice, and im willing to work with that. Reporter ross is calling for peaceful protests, but she is demanding justice for her fiance and a change to policing. He was a man of light, not darkness. So lets all start living that now. Reporter instead, for another night, the twin cities saw flames, smoke, and anger once again. City officials tell us this morning we just got off the phone with them, that they have had arrests overnight. Theyre still tale tallying the numbers. They had a number of fires, as well. In washington, protesters took their message directly to President Trump last night. The white house went into lockdown for a brief period as demonstrators clashed with members of the secret service outside the gates. This after the president stood by his controversial tweets that looting leads to shooting. Nikole killion is at the white house this morning. You were actually one of those who got caught up in that lockdown last night. Reporter yeah, thats right. Several members of the press corps were here when all of a sudden we saw protesters approaching the white house chanting things like i cant breathe and dont shoot. Thats when secret service put that lockdown into effect. They rushed us into the White House Briefing room. We were there for about an hour once we got the all clear. Those demonstrations, as you saw there, still intensified well into the night. The president nor the white house has reacted to the the thetheir to the latest unrest. The pentagon has put military police units on alert to potentially deploy to minneapolis. I want to express our nations deepest condolences and most Heartfelt Sympathies to the family of george floyd. Reporter President Trump spoke with the family of george floyd friday and said there was no excuse for what happened to him. Well, i just expressed my sorrow. That was a horrible thing to witness, and ive seen bad things, ive seen many bad things, and that was just a horrible thing to witness and to watch. Reporter but the president was less sympathetic earlier in the day on twitter. He called protesters thugs and tweeted, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Twitter flagged the tweets as glorifying violence. Ive heard that phrase for a long time. I dont know where it came from. Reporter it came from miami police chief Walter Headley in 1967. Known for aggressive policing tactics in black neighborhoods that sparked race riots. Ive heard it for a long time, as most people have. And frankly it means when theres looting, people get shot. Were seeing new york city is now on track. So as we reach this stage right now, how do prevention methods change our facial coverings are facial coverings still an effective tool . Will. No question about it. This is a dropless spread disease. Wearing masks in public will dramatically decrease the spread of the virus from one person to another. It has to be done, we have to think of one here and wear masks, its simple. Doctor, there is news coming out about coronavirus as it relates to preexisting health conditions. It affects people who have those conditions obviously more. There is new research on cancer this morning. Youre an oncologist. Tell us about that and how much youre concerned. So this is the largest study done. There where two studies, one in europe and one in the United States. And what it showed was that people who had cancer, active cancer and were diagnosed with covid19 in a period there was almost a 13 death rate in those people, a 13 death rate. So cancer was a significant risk for complications and death from covid19. What was interesting in the study is it didnt matter if you were actively receiving treatment or not. The takehome is be aware if you have cancer and continue your treatment to try to get the cancer under control. David, we heard President Trump yesterday announce that the u. S. Will cut ties with the w. H. O. Were in the middle of a pandemic. What are the potential repercussions of that . Ive been as critical as anybody over the World Health Organization over the last several decades. Its bureaucratic, slow to act. But we need it at this time. This is a global pandemic, and theres one organization that can organize member countries across the globe to work together, to share data, to make the right things happen for the betterment of human kind. And so i dont think this is the right time to walk out of the World Health Organization. On the vaccine side, news about a possible need to do human challenge trials. Explain what those are. So challenge trials, weve done before with the common cold which is we give you a vaccine, and then we wait several weeks later. We actually give you the virus. You know, now that numbers are decreasi decreasing across the globe, if you do a clinical trial, it may take a long time to get enough patients with and without it. Youre giving the virus to people, but you can very quickly know whether a vaccine works or not. In is something being discussed here in the United States and around the world as a possibility of a way to accelerate vaccine development. Yeah, time seis obviously of the essence. The first attempted launch on wednesday was scrubbed because of bad weather. Everyones hoping for a more promising forecast today. Officially, weather conditions are 50 50 for raunlaunch today. Right now theres a call among all the top officials here about the weather. The official told me right now launch it looking more likely for tomorrow than it is for today. But no final decision has been made yet. What everybody agrees about is that astronaut safety trumps everything. Launch conditions have to be favorable both on pad 39a and in the atlantic ocean, all the way up the u. S. East coast. Thats where the capsule would ditch in case of serious trouble. You dont have to be a Rocket Scientist to grasp that no one controls launch weather. The Human Factors end up adding risk as well because it wears everybody out, including our astronauts, although they never complain. We want to make sure that everybody is well rested and ready to go. Do not expect to clear in time to allow for launch today. You can go ahead and end todays launch attempt.
