Believe me. So get the king dons bible today before supplies are hurled at protesters. And, remember, if someone slaps you on theheek, i got two words for you tear. Gas. Its a late show with Stephen Colbert. Tonight coup and what army . plus, stephen welcomes keeganmichael key and wes moore. And now, live on tape from a safe distance, its Stephen Colbert stephen look at the hair. The hair is getting out of control. You ready to do this . One, two. Phew welcome to a late show. I am your host, Stephen Colbert. Its yet another historic day in america. And, as usual with donald trump, it aint the good kind of history. Ken burns, ive got your next project the civil war 2 half the civil, all the war. For a week, americas streets have been filled with protesters enraged over the murder of george floyd by police, while trump said practically nothing. But last night, at 6 45, he finally appeared in the rose garden to calm a troubled nation by threatening martial law. I am mobilizing all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting, to end the destruction and arson, and to protect the rights of law abiding americans. If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then i will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them. Stephen so, in response to protests about police brutality, youre threatening to send in the army to crush them. Thats like forgetting your childs birthday and apologizing by sending in the army to crush them. Trump explained his decision i am your president of law and order. Stephen as trump both original and s. V. U. im also your president of csi miami, ncis los angeles, and paw patrol. So youre the president of law and order, and what else . And an ally of all peaceful protestors. Stephen its true. As long as theyre white, holding an ar15, and screaming, i want a haircut then the president went back to his lawandorder theme. One law and order. And that is what it is one law. We have one beautiful law. Stephen wait a second is it possible trump thinks wet . as trump as far as i know, theres a law against ripping off those mattress tags, and Everything Else is the purge have at it trump ended this event with this cliffhanger now im going to pay my respects to a very, very special place. Thank you very much. Stephen a special place . Where . Where could he be going . Its like hes hosting a reality show, especially when you see the full clip now im going to pay my respects to a very, very special place. Thank you very much. Coming up on americas got dictator, donald reveals his very, very special place to Khloe Kardashian and one of joe exotics tigers after this message from buffalo wing slims no justice, how about a sixpiece . Stephen now, it turns out, trumps very, very special place was the historic st. Johns in protests over the weekend. One problem there was a crowd open fire with rubber bullets, flash grenades, and tear gas. Not only is that a horrific abuse of the office of the presidency and our military. The tear gas was completely unnecessary. When people see trump walking toward them, they naturally cry and vomit. And wait a second, didnt trump just say this an ally of all peaceful protestors. Stephen as trump did i say ally . I meant a lie. as in, right now i am telling a lie. Now, heres how bald this display of authoritarianism is. While hes giving his speech in the rose garden, you can actually hear the military flash grenades exploding in the background. Where there is no law, there is no opportunity. explosion stephen as trump and where there is law,ity kn. T shooouthts ullet. Once the path was cleared for caesars brave shamble, trump made his way across the street to the boardedup church, where. He, with visible confusion and discomfort, groped a bible. as trump ive only seen one of these when i was sworn in. Lets see if i can remember. Hold the bible, and then you raise your right hand. Is that it . Am i extra sworn in . Am i president double stufft . Then a reporter asked trump about his little prop there is that your bible . Its a bible. Stephen i dont have a bible. My baseball, as always, is hustler magazine. This thing is the most boring magazine i have ever seen. It doesnt even have a centerfold which is too bad because i heard beth shiba had a pretty sweet can. So trump left his speech in the rose garden, had the military clear the streets, so he could come to this church. He must have had something really important to say to haul out the authoritarian so a reporter asked the president what he was thinking. Spoiler alert not much. Thoughts right now, mr. President . We have a great country. That is my thoughts. Stephen great countries . Thats your thoughts. Finally, trump revealed his true reason for the mission a photo op with his allwhite advisers. Now, reportedly, the reason trump wanted this meaningless photo was because he was upset by coverage of the fact that he had been rushed to the underground bunker on friday night. Not sure if he thought that one through. as trump oh, they think im a coward, do they . Ill show them. Quick, go assault a bunch of peaceful protesters. Daddys gotta frown in front of a church and hold a bible like a fly swatter. Keep those bibles ambulanced, please. Now, not everybody loved trumps photo op. For instance, the bishop of st. Johns, marrian budde. She called into Anderson Cooper last night to express her feelings. The president just used a bible, the most sacred text of the judeochristian tradition, and one of the churches of my diocese without permission. As a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of jesus and everything that our churches stand for. And to do so, as you just said, he used tear gas by Police Officers and riot gear to clear the church yard can. I am outraged. Stephen shes right to be outraged. In fact, im sure the bishop wouldve tried to block trump but, unfortunately, she can only move diagonally. Check andate ens not lie trumps a church regular, king on cbs tmorning thisrnin. Relar basis . No, no. I moan, hose and the only time hes been to st. Johns, to my knowledge, was rarely in church. On the morning of his inauguration. Stephen it was memorable, because trump described it as, the biggest crowd in church history. The most prayers, way more prayers than obama. And i ate all those little crackers. Kind of dry. Couldve used some salsa. But i did like that statue of but i did like that statue of kid rock in a diaper doing that swan dive. Now, bishop budde was at home when trump pulled this p. R. Stunt, but members of st. Johns parish were present, including rectors and clergy, who throughout the day were outside thchdingut Water Bottles and granola bars to protesters and expressing solidarity with their cause. As one said, we were literally driven off the st. Johns, Lafayette Square patio with tear gas and concussion grenades and police in full riot gear. , as sprayed with tear gas as she tried to help scared demonstrators leave the area. It reminds me of jesus stirring words in the beatitudes blessed are the peacemakers. And to protect them, could we get some u. N. Peacekeepers in here because this guys crazy. Trump tried again today with a visit to the st. John paul ii national shrine, which got a harsh rebuke from washington archbishop wilton gregory, who released a statement saying, i find it baffling and reprehensible that any catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and a manipulated in a fashion that had violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people, even those with whom we might disagree. Wow, that is the worst review of a religious event since my middle schools production of godspell. I forgot my lines and improvised. That night, jesus knew kung fu. Sosorry jowdus, thism win. The president wanted another religious photo op, but this time, instead of a bible, he brought melania. And when the photos began, trump seemed to tell the first lady to smile. A religious ceremony, cameras, the pained look on her face its always so sweet to watch a couple reenact their wedding so trump wants to send the United States military in to your cities to stamp this down. And now you may be asking yourself, can he even do that . How come you never see the military keeping order in u. S. Streets . Thats because its illegal. The posse comitatus act of 1878 prohibits the domestic use of military for Law Enforcement purposes without specific congressional authorization. So, according to posse comitatus, trump needs consent from congress. Unfortunately, donald trump never askse by thposse. Yesterd, trump held a phone call with the nations governors to threaten to help them. During the call, he unleashed u. S. Secretary of defense and neighbor who was always so quiet we never imagined what was in his basement, mark esper. Esper explained how the protests must be quelled. I think the sooner that you mass and dominate the battlespace, the quicker this dissipates, and we can get back to the right normal. We need to dominate the battlespace. Stephen let that sink in. The United States secretary of defense is calling the parking lot at the k. F. C. The battlespace. Dont shoot hes not really a colonel its just jim gaffigan in a wig so the u. S. Military may soon be deployed against u. S. Citizens. Listen, mr. President , you dont want to launch a land invasion in america without a clear exit strategy. Thats a quagmire. Youll never quell the local people. Theyre too heavily armed. And the fact that youre president proves theyre not ready for democracy. Now, trumps idea of pitting the u. S. Military against u. S. Citizens has our neighbors worried, because today, we heard from canadian Prime Minister and cover model for a romance novel called the lustful librarian, justin trudeau. During his daily press conference, trudeau was asked about the situation in the u. S. Youve been reluctant to comment on the words and actions of the u. S. President , but we do have donald trump now calling for military action against protesters. We saw protesters teargassed yesterday to make way for a president ial photo op. Id like to ask you what you think about that. And if you dont want to comment, what message do you think youre sending . Stephen thats a long pause. He is an Emmy Awardwinning actor and comedian you know from key and peele and friends from college. He now hosts the cbs game show game on please welcome back to a late show, keeganmichael key. Keegan thank you for being here. Hi, stephen, how are you doing . Stephen im doing all right. Lets lay our cards on ths interview. Yes, yes, we did. Stephen two weeks ago today, okay. And it was a lovely interview. It was. Stephen it was it was crisp. There were levels. But layers. Stephen a lot has happened in the last two weeks. Yes. Stephen and we both agreed that maybe it would be more appropriate if we did it again. So thanks so much for being here. Thank you, buddy. I completely agree. I think it makes this was the best decision, yes, absolutely. Stephen well, a week ago, a little bit more than a week ago, george floyd was killed. Right. Stephen in minneapolis. Right. Stephen and i i dont know if you have watched the entire thing, but if you have watched it or any part of it, whats what is your and what ws your and what is your ongoing reaction to what you saw . Uhm, i would say i think like many people, like many people, frustration and sadness and anger. But another interesting feeling thats come across me is exhaustion. Im feeling a lot of exhaustion, mostly because were dealing with a systemic issue here. And when i see that that was something that was filmed, what comes to mind is how many of these incidents do we not even know about that happen every day, where there are no eyewitnesses, or people arent videotaping it . And so its it brings up the question over and over again what do we really do . Like, how can we really stop this . Steen well, wht do yu of whare seing now . Well stephen the reaction to it, in all its different forms . I think that now you know, i think its interesting that were seeing a double phenomenon right now. Were seeing these peaceful protests, and were soog people assemble they have the right to assemble. And then were seeing this other issue of people looting, this looting being mixed into the into the situation. And i think whats happening, really, what i make of it is that people are responding to a lot of issues right now, issues that have been simmering under the surface. And issues like the wage gap, the fact that theres this huge gap between the rich and the poor in our country and the haves and the havenotes. And i think that something that that stems from is that theres i heard trevor noah le in a society, theres a contract, like an unspoken contract that everyone is living under, or supposedly so. That we all and in this country, the contract is called the american dream. And that were all supposed to be equal, and were all supposed to have the opportunity and the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. And theres a section of our population who is being told, oh, no, im sorry. That dream does not apply to you, does not apply to you. There are people who live you live in a community, the contract is the police are supposed to serve and protect, and that isnt happening, doesnt apply to you. So all of that frustration, i think, is bubbling over right now. And the manifestation of that frustration is the looting. Stephen the looting has to be separated from the protesting at the same time. 100 . Stephen the protesting is seeking justice. 100 . There should definitely be arci mll amt ofpele tarclz out there, who are acting in what i think is not the most helpful way, and they should definitely be separated from the people who are letting their voices be heard and empowering themselves in a Truly American way, in a very intrinsically american way. And that is encouraging in a way to see and also to see people especially a lot of young people saying, i can enact my rights as a person who is allowed to speak up, in a nation were allowed to speak up. The i dpffy nt toae there isear delineation between these two groups of people. Stephen now, how has your experience been on americas racial divide, now that youre famous . Yes. Stephen because, you know, you are not an anonymous African American man. Youre keeganmichael key. Year, its interesting. I i when i think of that question it reminds me of a time not too long ago where i was driefs a friendm sep in losel driving them home and we were parked outside of their house having a conversation. And a police car came down the street and went past us and i saw the driver look out of the window at the car and then drove past up, and they turned around and pulled up next to the car in the street. And i felt something i have felt a couple of times in my life, you know, my heart rate started to race a little bit. And then the Police Officer gets out of the expar he comes over to my vehicle, and hes like, hey youre the guy. And i was like, yes, yes, i am the guy. And it was it was one of those experiences where i go, now why is that his response to seeing me . Why is that his response . What is it about being a person whos known . And what came to me was i dont know if youre familiar with the nigerian author dejay . Stephen i am sad to say i am not. Shes a really brilliant author and she did a ted talk called the dangers of the single story. And she talked about people having a story that can encompass an entire theme or encompass an entire thing, so a story about literature, or a story about the entire continent of africa. But what happens is when you have an individual story about a person, i think it allows you to see them as human. And i think by being a person who is famous, when you watch a person in a movie or on a television show, you see them in a story. You feel like theyre struggling against things youve struggled against. You see them as a person, and i think that is an aspect of celebrity is that the Police Officer sees you as a person, whether youre black or hispanic or white. They see you as a person. And especially if your work has moved them in . Way. And its completely different than it was when i was younger. Whats so interesting is the skin color goes away because theyre only seeing a human sto
