A clearer picture emerges from correspondent tracy smith, for our sunday morning cover story. I will fight to protect you. I am your president of law and order. Reporter recently, while President Trump was talking law and order theyve gotta get tougher. Theyve gotta get tougher. Reporter First Lady Melania Trump was tweeting and healing and peace. And back in april when President Trump declined to wear a face mask i dont think im going to be doing it. Reporter his wife put one on and urged others to do the same. Another recommended guideline to keep us all safe. Reporter okay. Its not exactly a palace coup and some might say not nearly enough to keep her husbands more controversial actions in check, but either way, according to a new book, Melania Trump has more influence than you might think. This is very different than the narrative that some people have painted that she is trapped. Oh, makes her crazy to say shes poor melania trapped. Shes not. She is smart, independent. She will decide what she wants to do and what she doesnt want to do. Melania trump, thank you very much. Reporter Pulitzer Prize winner mary jordan is the author of the art of the deal published by simon schuster, a viacomcbs company. Of course, you asked to interview melania for this book. What happened . Basically no reply. The trumps, both of them, make people who are around them sign nondisclosure agreements. They also, i quickly learned, told people that new melania when she was young, when she was a model to not talk. Reporter the white house dismisses the book as fiction, but jordan says that, after several years and more than 100 interviews, a clearer picture emerged a woman who grew up dreaming of a life far way from her native sevnica, slovenia. She grew up in a really small town and couldnt wait to get out. She told everyone that. Everyone ooh i talked to in slovenia said she couldnt wait to get out of this town. She wanted to be where the action is. Reporter at first, Young Melania wanted to study architecture but sh was persuaded that modeling was a better option and she found success doing mostly print work in europe and later in new york city. She wed donald trump in 2005, became a u. S. Citizen in 2006, and eventually sponsored her mother and father, amalija and viktor to be u. S. Citizens as well. And how about chain migration . [ audience boos ] how about that . Somebody comes in, he brings his mother and his father reporter in fact, just days after their soninlaw made a speech blasting socalled chain migration, melanias parents took the oath and, in effect, became chain migrants themselves. Politics aside, both are said to dote on their 14yearold grandson barron, whos learned to speak their language. So barron is very close to her father. Theres a unit within the family unit, and its melania, her mother, her father and barron. And they all speak slovenian and its interesting, the secret service has no idea what theyre saying. Reporter and donald trump doesnt have a good idea of what theyre saying a lot of the time when theyre speaking no. He has said it annoys him sometimes because he has no idea what theyre saying. Reporter jordan also says melania has no problem making herself understood. Shes quite influential, and i think people have underestimated her big time. For instance, when donald trump was trying to figure out who to pick as his Vice President ial candidate, he brought chris christie, newt gingrich, and mike pence, and had her vet them. She spent two days with the pences. And her advice to him was, you know, pick pence, because hell be content to be no. 2. The other ones wont. Theyll be angling for the number one job. Reporter while melania has towed the Trump Company line in the past like the false birther claims about obama, its tough what tell what she thinks about his most recent decisions. I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem. Reporter like advocating the use of force against people protesting the killing by police of george floyd. Is so people dont like whats going on with this administration. How much can they blame her . So this is a really tricky question. I think most people that ive talked to about that say youre not really to blame for what your husband does, but i do think theres a special responsibility when youre in the white house. Its not just a regular spouse. You have a platform. Now i know that shes using it in ways that we dont know, because i keep hearing about all the influence and advice shes given him. She doesnt do it publicly. But its maybe it would even be worse. For those who dont like trump, maybe who knows what else he may be doing if she werent whispering in his ear. I still think most americans dont know the real Melania Trump. Reporter cath cath teaches history at Katherine Jellison teaches history at ohio university. Is it kind of important to know where the first lady stands because she does have the president s ear . I think pretty consistently in the modern era, first ladies have been sounding boards for their husbands and occasionally had weighed in on policy matters, certainly mrs. Clinton did, mrs. Carter did. So i think the American People want to know something about the family life of a president or a wouldbe president at the time of a president ial campaign. Reporter of course, the defining moment in the 2016 Campaign Hello . How are you. Reporter was the infamous access Hollywood Tape incident. I think that was the moment that she had the most power. Trump is all about leverage and power and that was the moment that melania really came into her own. Im automatically attracted to buffalo women. Reporter this tape from an access hollywood shoot which surfaced before the 2016 election you can do anything. Reporter captured trump talking about women in the most vulgar, offensive ways. He was saying because hes a star, he can grab any woman and was using pretty lewd language. And if melania didnt back him up, if she walked away right there then, he was toast. Reporter at around the same time, jordan writes, melania was starting to renegotiate her prenuptial agreement. Because she had wanted to do that during the campaign, no dummy, and she picked the right moment to try to get a better deal out of him. Reporter and when she delayed her move to the white house, jordan says that gave her even more leverage. What did she get in the new prenup . I dont know the exact details, but what im hearing from multiple sources is she moved in at the right time and got what she wanted. Reporter of course, at 15 years, President Trumps marriage to the first lady has outlasted both of his previous unions. He may call himself a great negotiator, but, in melania, it seems hes met his match. Is this a is it a loving marriage or is it a business deal . What im told is that there is more there than people realize. Yes, they live, i think what many people think is bizarrely separate lives, separate bedrooms. They have separate routines because shes fascinating because weve never had somebody who only arrived in america at the age of 26 and 20 years later shes in the white house. Its quite a story. Reporter with just a few mounds of sweetener, a little try and error and some creative camera positioning i think i have it. Reporter sullivan made her bed into the setting for the sugar soond dunes. Its a scene reminiscent of the white sands, place she photographed in person last spring. I love travel, and i love the outdoors with my whole soul. It is what i chose as a career for a reason. I love this world. Reporter known an online as erin outdoors, she makes her living as a travel photographer but when covid19 hit, all of her farflung gigs dried up. So youre a travel photographer who cant travel. How did you adapt . Ive been thinking about how i could stay creative and i decided to challenge myself to create tiny adventure scenes out of household objects. Heres a scene right now where an adventure is happening. Reporter soon, mushroom groves, spaghetti swamps, and broccoli forests were sprouting up around her los angeles apartment. Shooting on my bed because it gets the best light. Reporter some scenes like tin foil lake look as if they could be actual locations. I got the tiniest hikers. Reporter others like great pancake canyon are more obviously fanciful, although, boy, do i wish place like that were real. Im really trying to communicate a feeling more than a literal place, a feeling of wonder or or awe or adventure or calm. Reporter as an outdoor photographer, youre often at the mercy of nature. So i dont get overwhelmed with the possibilities because there are infinity possibilities of this project. Reporter for proof of those possibilities, just search for the ourgreatindoors on instagram. Sullivan encouraged her followers to upload their own attempts. But in recent days, weve been hearing more and more about another song, a song often referred to as the black national anthem. Lift every voice and sing lift every voice and sing was written as a poem by africanamerican educator and activist James Weldon Johnson in the late 1800s. It was first recited by students at the segregated Stanton School in jacksonville, florida, on abraham lincolns birthday in 1900. Let our rejoice rise high James Johnsons brother, John Rosamond johnson, set the poem to music. And in 1919 the song was adopted by the naacp. Its lyrics speak to the africanamerican struggle for freedom and equality. Out from the gloomy past til now we stand at last where the white gleam of our bright star is cast over the years, countless choirs and performers have lifted up their voices to sing its words of hope, including kim weston at the 1972 los angeles coliseum benefit concert, memorialized in the film wattstax. Lift every voice and sing let our rejoicing rise high r. Its evident in good times, with decisions focused on the longterm. And crucial when circumstances become difficult. That continued emphasis on people our advisors, associates, clients and communities gives us purpose, strength and a way forward. Today. And always.
