So as we go through our day, clearing for most of us except for the coast. 91 in concord this afternoon and 82 saseand 71 for oakland and now lets go to a special report in progress. By the pandemic. Were expecting an historic drop in americas Gross Domestic Product gdp. Thats the broadest measure of the countrys economic strength. Analysts say the economy is in serious trouble right now and were also going to be getting numbers on how the pandemic is affecting the job market. The Labor Department just reported another 1. 4 million americans filed for unemployment last week. This comes as congress s ed ove stimulus package to boost the economy and to help people who have lost their jobs. Lets bring in cbs News Business analyst jill schlesinger. Start with the gdp report. What does that tell us . Reporter first of all, gdp, thats the total measure of the u. S. Economy. Goods and services. And we saw a historic contraction in the Second Quarter. Down by just under 33 on an annualized basis. Now just to remind everyone, because you dont study econ 101 every day, 33 doesnt mean we dropped by a third over one quarter from another. It means if we were going to push this through for the next four quarters it would be a 33 drop. This amounts to about a 10 drop from the previous quarter. It is awful still. Just remember, the worst performance that we have seen since records have been kept back in 1947 and anthony, this does sort of approach the Great Depression era. We didnt have numbers at that time. But its clear it was a devastating contraction in the u. S. Economy and thats what occurred in the Second Quarter of the year. Yeah and that affected that had of course our job losses jill. What do you think of the unemployment number for the quarter . Reporter well, this is clearly just like jay powell said yesterday. The chairman of the fed. The pace of the economic recovery is following the virus. Cause we ve seen e viru the south and west, we sort of stopped short on the progress we were making the weekly claims. So to have here in the 19th, 20th weeks since this all began, to have another 1. 4 Million People apply for unployment its staggering. More than 53 Million People have applied for benefits since the pandemic reared its ugly head. How critical does that make another stimulus package, jill . Reporter when i talk to economists they believe that extra money that is going to people who are sidelined in the economy right now, that thats imperative. In fact, we do expect the economy will bounce back in the second half of the year. Estimates for you know 13 to 18 increase in the quarter were . Right now but they are predicated to more help to americans and small businesses, without that help the economy could really see its fortunes sort of slide a little bit in the second half of the year, again, weve already started to recover. It like the worst quarter is behind us. But people will need the help . So will the economy. All right, jill schlesinger, thank you jill. Our coverage will continue on the 24 hour streaming network cbsn. You can watch it at cbsnews. Com or the cbs news app. More to come on the local news onhe cbs eveningon and tonight cbs this morning. In fact, Alameda County now closing in on 11,000 cases and second place Santa Clara County now with 9600. Followed by Contra Costa County at 7700. Alameda county also now has the highest number of hospitalizations since the pandemic began. The county is working state and is considering rolling back the reopening. Interim Public Health director dr. Nicholas moss says the transmissions that are happening through social gatherings and any further easing of lock down is now on pause. Im really still very concerned about our hospitalizations. And so until we see some stabilization there its too early to talk about reopening. Greater than just one person. Its greater than just me. You have to kind of like help everybody with this situation. Reporter now take a look at the map. That drills down a bit further. Showing the dark red area where is cases are spiking. Mostly in east oakland around the coliseum and airport and fruitvale and along the corridor. Case rates here are more than 1500 patients per 100,000 people. Were live in oakland, kiet do, kpix 5.
