We begin this morning with a coronavirus hot spot under a new threat from nature. This time its a hurricane. Hurricane isais could hit the west coast. It is 80 miles southeast of nassau, the bahamas, now. Florida is the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic at this time with record numbers of new cases and deaths set this week. The storm is complicating efforts to contain the virus. Manuel bojorquez is in riviera beach, florida, good morning. Reporter good morning. Practically the entire east coast of florida is bracing for the impacts, the potential impacts from hurricane isais. Anything from flooding rains and storm surge, it is especially a concern along the coast of Palm Beach County and up north along the i95 corridor where the hurricane could make landfall. Overnight, this entire area is under a hurricane warning. Floridas governor has declared a state of emergency. Hes urging residents to have seven days worth of food, water, and medicine ready, but also facial coverings and Hand Sanitizer as this potential sdrer is merging with the is merging with the covid19 crisis. Its important to include personal protective gear in those kits today. Reporter staterun testing sites in areas were closed until next week, hampering efforts to track the virus. Some Miamidade County hurricane shelters are on standby with the potential to provide separate quarters for those who are currently infected. Governor ron desantis said the state has a supply of personal protective gear at the ready, as well as generators for Nursing Homes at risk of losing power. Right now on hand, they have 20 million masks, 22 million gloves, ten million gowns, 1. 6 million face shields, 270,000 cover yalls, and 20,000 thermometers. Reporter already, isaias has battled the bahamas, areas devastated by Hurricane Dorian last year. It hammered puerto rico and parts of the dominican republic, too. As it travels north, the governors of North Carolina and virginia have already declared states of emergency. With North Carolina ordering evacuations from at least one barrier island. A hurricane during a pandemic is double trouble. But the state has been carefully preparing for this scenario so that we can do our best to keep people safe from the weather, as well as the virus. Reporter the concern is not just along the coast but also parts inland which could also see strong winds and flooding rains. The Important Message here in florida from officials this morning and along the eastern seaboard is that as we run out of time to prepare for the storm, people should very soon be in the place where they intend to ride it out. Dana . All right. Thank you. Meteorologist Jeff Berardelli is tracking the path of the hurricane. Good morning. How soon might it make landfall . Its going to happen tonight and tomorrow. You have just the next few hours to prepare if youre along floridas east coast. Lets show you the current status on the storm right now located across the central bahamas. It has winds of 85 miles per hour, and its moving to the northwest. Its around nassau. This is what has changed overnight since you went to bed. The track has shifted ever so slightly east away from the coast. Thats good news, but any change at all, theres no wiggle room, would bring the strongest winds tonight and tomorrow right along the major i95 cities. Then possibly a second landfall on tuesday along the carolina coast, and maybe a third landfall in new england as we head into wednesday as a weaker storm. This is the wind field. Youll notice the strongest winds move in late tonight through tomorrow morning, strongest winds in palm beach counties, along the Treasure Coast and toward the space coast toward tomorrow afternoon. Watch out for hurricaneforce gusts and eventually into the carolinas. Let me leave with this here water temperatures are blazing hot across all of the atlantic basin. Temperatures actually in record territory. Part of this is due to humancaused climate change. We have warm water temperatures by a couple of degrees. That has two effects. First of all, it makes these storms more intense and very well could keep the intensity high on this particular system. And also its accelerated the pace of our season to toward territory. Were exceeding records already. This is likely to be probably the second mostactive Hurricane Season on record when its said and done. Thank you. The White House Point man for covid19 testing says the u. S. Is struggling in its ability to provide rapid results. As schools and businesses look to testing as key to reopening plans, Admiral Brett Giroir says results inside of two to three days in many cases are still not possible in much of the country. It comes as the u. S. Saw more than 67,000 new cases of the virus on friday. Its pushing the total number of cases above 4. 5 million, and the death toll over 153,000. Michael george is in new jersey, a state that again is dealing with a flareup of the virus. Good morning. Reporter good morning. New jersey had been showing signs of progress, but now the infection rate is rising with more than 700 new cases a day. Health experts say the reason is People Holding indoor house parties and refusing to wear a mask. Its an issue being seen across the country m. Including wisconsin, coronavirus cases are spiking after being pushed back. We had made Real Progress in fighting in virus. Unfortunately, things have changed drastically since then. Reporter the Governors State saw 6,000 new cases and 55 deaths this week. We find ourselves in a completely different situation than one we were in just a few months ago. Reporter oklahoma, pennsylvania, missouri, and connecticut have all seen their average new cases increase dramatically. And floridas deaths hit new records four times this week. The testimony youre about to give is the truth reporter friday before the house select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis, President Trumps testing czar, Admiral Brett Giroir, was asked if the country is doing enough testing. We cannot test our way out of this or any other pandemic. Tsting does not replace personal responsibility. It does not substitute for avoiding crowded indoor spaces or washing hands or wearing a mask. Reporter at that same hearing did the protest increase the spread of the virus . The protest incarcerated the spread of the virus. Reporter they tried to get dr. Fauci to take a stand on large protests. Crowding together particularly when youre not wearing a mask contributes to the spread of the virus. Its a simple question, doctor. Should we limit the protests . The government is yes. Reporter fending off the politics, dr. Fauci also reported a vaccine could be ready for distribution by the end of the year, while holding firm on the importance of staying away from crowds. A plea now heard by Major League Baseball where 15 games have been postponed after several players tested positive. Late friday with six teams now idled, the leagues commissioner warned the season could be canceled. If were not smart and safe, then well well fail. Reporter Mark Attanasio owns the milwaukee brewers. We have a lot of really smart people working on this. Really a number of committed players who want to play through this. But everybody wants to play safely. Reporter and new jerseys governor says the recent surge in cases is setting off alarms. Hes putting residents on notice if things continue to incline the state could impose tougher restrictions. Back to you. Thank you so much. Dr. Amesh adalia joins us for more on developments regarding the pandemic. Hes a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of public health. He is in pittsburgh this morning. Doctor, it is august 1st. We are getting closer and closer to the start of the school year. I realize different communities are making different decisions. What else are we learning right now about how the virus impacts children and the likelihood of transmission . So it remains true that children are likely spared from the severe consequences of this disease. Theyre not represented amongst those that are hospitalized or have severe cases, and thats a good thing. What we are learning is children, yes, they can be infected, yes, they have the virus in their nose, and they can spread it to each other. The question is how much would they do that in a school setting, and how much can you mitigate that by social distancing, by changing the way that you physically operate a school. And i think were going to see a lot of that unfold as schools start to open. There are private schools open in the United States right now. There are schools in other countries and day care centers. I do think this is an open question. But it has to be a priority. The American Academy of pediatrics, National Academy of engineering and medicine have talked about schools being a priorities to open. We need to do it safely, following cdc guidance. I think this has to be something we try to put forward as we move through the pandemic. You know of the things that people have talked about in reference to getting back to school might be testing where you get results in 48 to 72 hours, certainly faster than people are seeing now. Where are we in terms of that benchmark of getting those test results back that quickly . It varies across the country. If youre in the hospital, and im going in a couple of hours to see patients, you can get the test back in a couple of hours. Its the outpatient testing where we have this failure. Where we have tests that take serve or eight days to seven or eight days to come back, there are long lines to get swabbed, all of that discourages testing. And the test that comes back in seven to eight person is worthless for the person and contact tracers, all of that transmission likely occurred. We want to test people instantly. Maybe in their home like we can do for hiv. Were not quite there yet. Doctor, doctors and nurses are Getting Better at treating the virus every day which is good news. As of now there is no approved medication to treat coronavirus and no vaccine. Any idea what you think comes first, approved medication or the vaccine . We do have an experimental antiviral call ed remdesivir that gets people out of the hospital about 30 first quicker. This is something that we are using. Were also using steroids on those who need oxygen. That cuts mortality. That was an already approved drug, and we did a controlled trial and got data. There is a new tool in we have in juliy that woo did not have in march. This is something thats a standard of care now. The other drugs are on their way. Were getting antibody treatments, theyre working on convalescent plasma. But do these in an experimental trial. These are likely things well get before the vaccine. You have to remember that the process is long. Were entering phasethree trials. In order to vaccinate the population with a twodose revenue message, it could take over a year to get through that. So many people are looking to try to travel in some way to get out of their scope where they are right now. Any safe advice you can give along those lines . You have to remember that any activity that we do now in the era of the pandemic is going to be unable to completely eliminate the risk of transmission of the virus or acquisition of the virus. You can do some simple things avoid crowded places, wash your hands, dont touch your face, wear a Face Covering in places that are crowded, where you cant social distance and try and think about how to modify your vacation plans to make them less likely to come into tinto contact with the virus. Lots of people are going to florida and south carolina, those probably arent the best places to go. Look at the map and see where the virus is controlled. Dr. Amesh adalia, thank you. President trump is signaling interest in extending some type of Weekly Economic lifeline to help millions of unemployed americans.
