KPIX KPIX 5 News At 5pm July 12, 2024

Game changer for the future of u. S. Space travel. Thanks for joining us. After weeks of haircuts, nail appointments, and gym workouts, a spike in covid19 cases is forcing more San Mateo County businesses to shut down. Its all because the county has spent more than three days on the state watch lists. Reporter thats right, its going to be a lot harder to pamper yourself or get a haircut because those salons and businesses are not allowed to operate indoors, but a lot of Business Owners say they dont want to look back and get angry, they want to look forward and plan ahead. West 25th avenue in san mateo is known as salon alley, 11 hair and nail salons on one block. The new restrictions made everything shut down. We had to cancel our clients and let the rest of the team know, unfortunately the team members really do depend on us topework for us. Reporter linda says this nail spa invested thousands of dollars in partitions, safety equipment, and a temperature tracking device so they can reopen in mid june and july. Now its time for a new plan. We are extremely devastated, however we are hopeful that soon we will be able to move outside. I dont have time to be frustrated. Its more about how to respond. Reporter many indoor businesses are trying to answer the same questions, the new restrictions ban malls, gyms, churches, tattoo parlors, spas, hair and nail salons. We did find one spa that stayed open, the worker says they are closing down after today. We might not be here a few months down the road if things dont change. Reporter any Business Owners understand the closures are for safety reasons, but they also worry about the future. Cities like redwood city and san mateo have shut down streets downtown to help businesses survive. Many say its still not enough. Were doing probably a third of what we used to do. Reporter as for this lawn, theyre waiting for the citys approval to move their operations out to the street. We are trying to figure out how do we not only survive this, but how do we thrive in this situation . That is so key, surviving and thriving, so how was the compliance rate . Reporter it appears the compliance rate was pretty high. I called about 15 churches and went to about 15 different spas and hair salons and pretty much all of them were closed except for that one spa where the worker said we didnt really know about this and it was too late to close down, they are only open half the day but they will be shut down after today so just that one place, everybody else is shut down. Two bay area cities are taking new steps to help struggling businesses stay afloat. The San Anselmo Chamber of commerce has raised more than 80,000 for a Recovery Fund that will be distributed as grants. In the meantime, the Larkspur Chamber of commerce is also handing out checks to brick and Mortar Stores struggling to pay their bills. On the fire watch this evening, and outofcontrol wildfire burning in Southern California forcing thousands of people to evacuate. The apple fire broke out friday in Cherry Valley east of los angeles and has burned into the San Bernardino National Forest. Help is on the way from the bay area, two strike teams made up of crews from alameda county, oakland, fremont and hayward were deployed this morning, the fire has burned more than 20,000 acres with zero percent containment. Our reporter was at the scene with the latest. Reporter a lot of smoke and flames that weve seen flaring up, certainly sad news as i have learned from neighbors on the street that there are homes on that street, we are on the bluff, what you are looking at is the smoke from across the street and neighbors tell me there are a couple of homes over there and that is what we have seen burning here over the last hour or so unfortunately. They did get a chopper up not too long ago to drop some water over here and that certainly helped with some of those claims. Take a look at this video, flames roaring through the area, very quickly into the hillside, up and around both these communities where we are in Cherry Valley and into the San Bernardino National Forest and the flames at times were very hot and very heavy and we are told there are about 8000 people that have been evacuated from these communities and all the homes here and this is obviously why. There are a lot of homes that are scarcely out here in this community. Obviously the big neighborhoods, theyve been able to protect, but some of these homes a little further out into the countryside, thats where they are having a e lk we anorth of banning ct that bluff streetan iskind of a peninsula so right now we are in the east side of bluff street wears yesterday we were on the west side, so the Fire Department with cal fire was very easily able to maneuver the fire around the street that we are on right now which does have quite a lot of homes on it and they did that obviously to protect those homes and push the fire out and around it, so they were successful in that attack yesterday and obviously they are going to continue to try to do that today to try to protect as many homes as possible. Nonetheless, certainly a very active fight going on right now at this hour. The National Weather service says the weather is not helping, dangerously hoe ex cont. Grnd running in its new plan to keep wildfires at bay. With nearly 11 million to spend this fiscal year, the county will Fund Everything from Evacuation Route studies, private property inspections, and vegetation clearing projects, the money is coming from voter approved measure c which levies an average 200 in annual tax on properties. It was pure shock. Our entire life, 20 years of marriage, everything, heirlooms and jewelry. Reporter investigators say the van was last spotted near the trader joes around 2 am saturday night. Luke says he cant even begin to put a price tag on all that his family has lost, some of the items he says were precious , personal and quite frankly irreplaceable. The stuff that my wifes mom gave to her just before she died. All of my ta awards, my uniforms. Reporter the families move has temporarily been put on hold, delayed for a few days while they give investigators time to possibly track down the missing uhaul. Luke says he has a simple and straightforward message to the thieves. Theres a lot of things i would like to say to them, but just give me back my stuff. Back at home its just another Beautiful Day by the bay, but if you are inland and youve had another day of low nasa proved today that it could do what it did all the time back in the 60s, return accrue in earth orbit back home via a splashdown into the sea. This time it was a spacex group that had been in orbit for two months. As you can see on your screen, we have visual confirmation for splashdown. The crew astronauts made their watery finish in the gulf of mexico, they are the first astronauts nasa has sent into orbit in nine years. The capsule plunged through the atmosphere, deployed parachutes and this marks the nations first water landing in 45 years since the Apollo Mission back in 1975. Reporter others evacuated to shelters adhering to covert safe guidelines. We are bracing for whatever comes, we want to be ready for whatever so thats what we are focused on right now. Reporter for some, watching the weather is a welcome distraction in the midst of the pandemic. Our meteorologist joining us now and is the storm expected to strengthen back into a hurricane anytime soon . Probably not, it will stay a bookstore but it will come back on shore, so lets track it right now, its mainly sitting out over the water. If we get a closer view at this we will go inside the storm because those clouds make it difficult to tell whats really going on, this has kind of been a wobbly system over the last few days, you can see the center, not where you wouldve guessed, actually little farther south, plenty of rain, most of the coast and it stays off the coast, if it f ros la ,it do night and then itstayon shore a disorganized rain and wind up around 40 Miles Per Hour so it will be rainy, windy and it should not be too terribly destructive, something for them to keep a close eye on back home. Accurate home for us, if you live in the city or in the immediate bay, you are in the bubble. We will go back down into the upper 50s, a little warmer for the warm morning lows tomorrow than what weve been doing and the daytime highs tomorrow are not really the improvement yet, its still going to be 85 in san jose and thats where we were today, fremont goes to 79 and we still have to talk about the low and mid 90s over here for inland contra costa and alameda counties. Walnut creek wont be far behind that. Oakland goes to 76, san rafael5 tomorrow and there are low 90s still showing up in mendocino county.
