This comes after there were increases in covid cases over the memorial day and fourth of july holidays. Fauci puts seven states on notice north and south dakota, iowa, missouri, arkansas, illinois, and indiana. Following recent jumps in their infection rates. Michael george is here in new york with the latest. Good morning. Reporter good morning, dana. Here in new york, malls and casinos are set to reopen this week, but the plan to reopen city schools has been delayed two weeks over concerns the virus just isnt under control. All this as Health Experts warn this Holiday Weekend could 3d another spike in cases. Reporter even yesterday as the weekend was getting underway, there were signs on some beaches that social distancing might take a holiday this labor day weekend. Look at the behavior of the university students. We dont live in a communal society. We live in a me society. Reporter Health Officials are concerned of a replay of what happened after the fourth of july when there was a 22 spike in the average number of new u. S. Cases reported three weeks after that weekend. The governor of louisiana reminded people friday that after memorial day, the state was hit hard. As we move into labor day, im asking every louisianan and everyone in la well for any reason, please be mindful of the fact that our last surge started on memorial day weekend when people let their guard down. Reporter coast to coast, governors are warning people about the risks of not staying safe. Kate brown is the governor of oregon. As we head into the long weekend, i do want to remind oregonians across the state to make smart choices when it comes to covid19. Reporter across the nation, the number of states reporting rising numbers of new cases jumped from eight two weeks ago to 27 today. People forget that we are battling an invisible enemy. And unfortunately, some let their guard down during these times. Reporter in much of northern california, officials arent taking any chances. Many beaches there will close this weekend. People flouting the rules, but heres the problem when they flout these rules, their selfishness not only kills people, but their selfishness kills our economy. Reporter scientists this week were put in the spotlight as conflicting information about the vaccine came out. Earlier in the week, the centers for Disease Control told states to prepare for distribution as soon as late october. Then Administration Officials indicated that may be ambitious. Its extremely unlikely, but not impossible. Therefore, its the right thing to do to be prepared in case. Reporter and despite the cdc suggesting a vaccine could potentially be available just before the november election, late friday the wall street journal reported that several top drugmakers are working on a public pledge saying theyre not going to seek government approval until a vaccine is proven safe and effective. Michelle . All right. Thank you. Cbs news medical contributor dr. David agus joins us from los angeles. David, good morning. Lets start with the vaccine and speed, safety, and logistics are everyones, you know, top shelf right now. What are some of the challenges when were talking about the possibilities . So we have phasethree trials ongoing for several vaccines in the United States, and several that have begun months ago outside of the United States in other countries. Those data are looked at literally weekly where we see is there a difference between the group that got placebo and the group that got the vaccine. If theres a statistical difference and as well as a safety indicator, they will go and file that data with the fda. That data will be transparent. Every citizen will see that data and be able to make a decision on a vaccine. The Drug Companies are getting together now and saying were only going to file if the data merit it. So this will rise above politics. Science will win here. Nobody knows when. There will be knows when there will be enough cases to show that we have a vaccine that works. Again, science will win. We heard a lot of warning about previous Summer Holidays and how people handled them and letting their guard down. We are in a Holiday Weekend, but were also entering flu season, as well. What did we learn, and what happen are we concerned about at this point . Backtoschool season, Holiday Weekend, temperatures going up across the country. I am worried obviously, you know, from other holidays, we get together more, families, friends. And that could be spread of the virus. We have to continue social distancing, wearing a mask, and the behavior changes that we all know will stop the virus. Its not only for ourselves, its for our community. If one doesnt wear a mask, they can spread the virus. So we all have to do it. And i cant emphasize enough that we have to be in this together. David, the Largest School district in the country, new york city, did delay opening. But they are going to go back now in just a couple of weeks here. Theyre implementing a Testing Program of more than 10 of students and staff will be tested once a month. Is that the right strategy . Well, 1. 1 million students, 75,000 teachers even at 10 to 20 , thats a large number of tests. Of it could be the right strategy if the results come back quickly and they can contact trace. If you find a student or a teacher thats positive, its who did they interact with, and those people have to obviously be quarantined for 14 days. If the policy really is testing, with quick results and contact tracing, i think they have a shoot to duel something meaning a shot to do something meaningful to educating these kids in person. Dr. David agus, as always, thank you so much. President trump is fiercely denying a published report alleging that he disparaged veterans for their military service in the harshest of terms, calling those who died in combat, quote, losers and suckers. The comments appear to overshadow the upbeat august jobs report. The Labor Department released it on friday. 1. 4 million jobs were added last month, knocking down the Unemployment Rate to 8. 4 . Bofta yiman is at the white house this mornig with more on all of this. Good morning. Reporter good morning. White house officials are vocalizing their defense of the president , including Melania Trump who rarely comments about her husband. There is nobody that feels more strongly about our soldiers, our wounded warriors, our soldiers that died in war than i do. Reporter in a Late Afternoon briefing, President Trump called the atlantic article part of the ongoing witchhunt against him. Its a hoax of the just like the fake dossier was a hoax. Just like the russia, russia, russia was a hoax. It was a total hoax. Reporter earlier in the day, mr. Trump adamantly denied claims in the piece that he called soldiers killed in action losers and suckers when he canceled a visit to an American World war i cemetery in paris in twan 2018. It was a terrible thing that people could say the things and especially to me because ive done more for the military than almost anybody else. Reporter the article also claims that when former p. O. W. And senator john mccain died two years ago, President Trump told senior staffers were not going support that losers funeral. Mr. Trump insisted he never called mccain a loser. If these statements are true, the president should humbly apologize to every gold star mother and father and every Blue Star Family that hes denigrated and insulted. Who the heck does he think he is . Reporter biden himself never served in uniform, but his late son beau did. When my son volunteered and joined the United States military, as the attorney general, he went to iraq for a year, he wasnt a sucker. The service men and women he served with, particularly those that did not come home, were not losers. Reporter the former Vice President originally planned to focus friday just on the economy but said the president s remarks made him the closest hes come to losing his temper on the campaign trail. There are a lot of people out there supporting you or inclined to not vote for the president who would say why isnt joe biden angrier about all of this. Getting down in the gutter like the president does, saying things that id be inclined if we were behind a barn somewhere, would be a different thing. But thats not the job of a president. Reporter mailin voting kicked off in the key swing state of North Carolina friday with a record 600,000 absentee ballots sent out. The president has consistently attacked voting by mail, and this past hes urged voters who vote by mail to also go to the polls in person. Send in your early ballot, and then go and make sure that ballot is tabulated or counted. [ applause ] if its not counted, vote. Reporte how many times does this president have to stuggest thins where you all dont write hes a fraud . Reporter what could be an intriguing encounters, President Trump and joe biden are attending a 9 11 ceremony in shanksvil shanksville.
