Lingering as we are expected to reach recordbreaking temperatures. Conditions that triggered a spare the air alert through the weekend. We have Team Coverage starting in the weather center. The first thing i will do is show how hot we are now on saturday. And these numbers are pretty much right around the top. And you can see weve got plenty of locations on here that are well into the hundreds. Livermore at 102. Tomorrow, it will be four or 5 degrees hotter than today. Take a look at the forecast for sunday. Livermore, concord, san jose, oakland and San Francisco, you are my examples, we will hit 109 in livermore, 106 in concord. Now we need to Start Talking about records, and you see how many of them will fall. Livermore, concord, santa rosa and san jose will either break or tie records tomorrow but look at oakland and San Francisco. 91 in San Francisco. Just because you are not tying the record, youre not getting off easy, that is 1 degree shy of the record. There are a lot of colors on the map in terms of warnings and advisories. I will break these all down in a lot more detail in the complete forecast. The heat advisory includes the cost, so you will not necessarily escape the heat at the coast tomorrow although it wont be nearly as hot as it will be over here. In the areas shaded in pink thats where the excessive heat warning is in place. Beaches across the bay area are saying a surge in visitors looking for relief from the heat. The devon feely reports from one coastal town where you might want to make other plans. Reporter santa cruz is one of several coastal communities that made the cision to close its beaches to avoid large crowds and the spread of the coronavirus. On a weekend on which you would normally be packed, cal beach was all but deserted, off limits to anyone not planning to swim, surf or paddle into the water. In the summers it gets incredibly crowded on the beaches. It could just be walltowall people. So, i think this is a wise thing to do. Public Health Officials are trying to avoid spikes in coronavirus cases take the ones that occurred in the weeks after memorial day and fourth of july Holiday Weekends. I think it is in inconvenience but if its a measure that is doable and can hopefully help keep people safe, well and out of the hospital, and alive, then it seems like a small sacrifice. Some coastal communities that initially discouraged visitors from traveling outside the area to beaches eventually threw in the towel saying that enforcement was too taxing and largely ineffective. We were doing a study of barricades and then also having people educate from the parks and rec and then we will have officers on the beach doing enforcement. The city of santa cruz has another reason to encourage visitors to stay away from the beaches. The county is still recovering from recent wildfires and would like to leave one Available Hotel space there is for evacuees. We are asking hotel owners to please accommodate evacuees whenever possible and wherever possible. And make local individuals a priority over visitors from out of town. The compromise is that the beaches do open for a brief time in the afternoon 20 4 pm and 8 pm. To peninsula towns are taking a very different approach this weekend. My pacifica decided to close their beaches to avoid large crowds, just a few miles down south Half Moon Bay has decided to keep theirs open. I think people need to be outdoors. It sounds like the indoors we are worried about. Thats kind of the reason i wish they didnt close the beaches. Right now with everything involved, the other side of that is we need the revenue. Closures are having an impact on local businesses. We will have the full story coming up at 6 00. Another bay area popular destination will be off limits this Labor Day Weekend. Officials have closed Lake Berryessa to allow hundreds of workers to take care of some much needed maintenance. Parks in the east bay are open through the Labor Day Weekend but activities like swimming, boating, camping and barbecuing are not allowed despite some seeking and some realtime, picnic areas are also close. The city of San Francisco is also helping people beat the heat this weekend. They are opening up some libraries as whether Relief Centers and they include the San Francisco main library, the chinatown branch, mission bay and the Southeast Community facility. They will be open until monday. Wilson walker is live in pleasanton right now. It is all very hot so people are using airconditioning and electricity. So that is creating a problem. Hes got more on the flex alert that just took effect. Reporter we are sort of in the middle of this peak of demand as you know, it kind of starts around 3 00 and runs through the evening. We want to show you where we are on that curve, lots of curves these days. We will show you the power curve tonight, as you can see we have about hit the peak of demand for energy here in california. It usually comes around the 5 to six a clock hour. We are demanding 45 megawatts of energy. That is more than we were forecast today. However, the good news, we are still short of the available capacity which is about 53,000 megawatts. So we are using more energy than they thought we might. We are still short of that capacity, so as of now it looks like the lights will stay on throughout california. Now lets show you why we have this problem. In a word, it is renewable energy, solar power, the solar panels kicking in the late morning and start to peter off at around 2 00 in the afternoon. There you have the problem. Demand continues into the evening so what that means is california has got to pump up the production of gas energy or start buying energy from other states on the west coast who of course are saying facing their own power challenges. We have built ourselves into this problem with the expansion of solar power and it will be something that will be hard to get out of. When we get our backs to the wall this way, we shouldnt be getting our backs to the wall this way and we obviously havent for the last 20 years. We need to have other resources to meet the demand, and that is something that planning really has not kept up with. It looks like we will skate through this today, not heat our receipt of allowance in california, but temperatures are going to rise significantly tomorrow. Its like 105 where we are standing right now, i think that was the peak. Tomorrow it will be over 110, so the demand for energy will increase with the temperature. We will see what that chart looks like tomorrow as they try to cover all of their bases in this heat wave. Three or four weeks ago they were not able to do that. Meanwhile pg e announced it might be forced to cup our next week for public safety. I watch is in effect for much of the bay area for tuesday and wednesday when offshore winds can ramp up the fire danger. For a complete list of what is and what is not open is at kpix. Com. But, all that travel is raising the alarm. Health officials are worried that covid19 cases could surge in the coming days. We use labor day to take the day off, but unfortunately the virus doesnt. We dont want to go into that with another surge we have to turn around again. It really is an important weekend. Experts are also urging you to have your social limits. And while more people are choosing to hit the road by traveling by air, take a look at the backup on the san rafael ridge today. Gas report prices at the pump this weekend are said to be the lowest since 2004. Onto the fire watch, crews are making significant progress on the massive lighting fires burning around the bay area as we head into another heatwave. The lightning lnu complex that covers nearly 600 square miles in sonoma, napa and solano counties is now 89 contained. That even larger scu complex east of san jose is 86 contained and the czu complex in Santa Cruz County is 61 contained. We are feeling the heat here but water temperatures off main are warming faster than anywhere else. So far more than 100 heatwave days have been recorded since the start of the year meaning the water temperature is at or above the 90th percentile of the average temperature going back for 30 years. And the warming waters have increased the number of lobster off of maine. The chief scientist has been studying the warming water says the number of those lobsters will plummet. If we get our Carbon Emissions under control and stabilize temperatures, then the gulf can hold onto the lobster fishery. If we blow through those targets, by the end of the century maine will not be a lobster state anymore. With all these numbers weve seen lately, they are hard to believe. Popped up by 20 degrees in places, in fact summer, some even more. The greek fire, going for the less we can have, and it really took off today. Its a good example of what i temperatures and low humidity can really do. Our fires, we just told you about a minute ago, we are doing great with the buyers, but its been so hot today, those cumulus clouds are building and its sending an enormous amount of smoke toward tahoe. Thankfully here, most of the smoke is getting pulled just a little off to the east. But if the wind shifts just a little, our sky could look very interesting should that happen. I will let you know how that will progress. In the meantime, the spare the air alert has been extended until monday. Not necessarily because we are putting more smoke into the air, but because we are recycling what we have. So its not only the particulate matter we will be concerned about, it will be the ozone as well area that is usually a consequence when the temperature starts to spike. So we cant really win there. Theres our view looking off to the east. Unofficially, i will have official numbers at 6, concord hit 104, 87 in San Francisco. Tomorrow San Francisco will be in the 90s. Tomorrow is the peak of this heatwave. It doesnt end until we get to wednesday. But the most intense numbers of the one on the screen right now. So right around 100 and san jose, 107 for pleasant hill. 105, 107 in dublin, concord at 106 and the numbers in the bay, or better by comparison but still really hot considering. A member at the top of the newscast oakland and San Francisco, both 1 degrees shy of the alltime records for tomorrows date. 94 in oakland and 91 in San Francisco, plenty of low hundreds in south marin. The heat advisory for the coast will stay in effect all the way through monday night. But its the colors that show up here, the deep shades of pink, thats where weve got excessive heat warnings that will stay in effect until monday 9. When we go down on tuesday, thats when we will get those offshore winds that bryan mentioned earlier. Good news for the temperatures but not so good for the concerns of fire up in the mountains. In fact, lets get the correct seven day. I apologize for that not showing up. I want to make sure i get the right numbers on the screen, come on sevenday, where did you go.
