Long is this going to last . A couple more days. Lets start off with right now, the numbers over my shoulder are the daytime highs and only one broke the record. Santa rosa, record for today would have been 101, you got up to 104. As impressive as those numbers look, this was the easy day. Let me show you how things will play out tomorrow. So for a bunch of representative spots that blanket the bay area, livermore is 109, San Francisco at 91. Here is where we break the records. Livermore, concord, santa rosa and san jose. Conquered by as much as 4 degrees. 103 in san jose tomorrow. And even though 94 in oakland is not breaking a record, still 1 degree shy of it and it will still be a very hot day. Lets get as many other numbers as we can with a quick overview on the screen. Fremont at 101, Mountain View goes to 99 and yes there are heat warnings and advisories all over this map. I check back with the complete forecast i will break down the differences between an advisory and an excessive heat warning and that we will talk about the fire weather watch that comes into play early this coming week. With searing temperatures on a Labor Day Weekend at the coast was bound to be crowded with crowds and pacifica and Half Moon Bay went in different directions. John ramis tells us the tale of two beaches. Reporter two beach towns, two different decisions and two very different outcomes. Welcome to Half Moon Bay population everyone. With the ocean breeze blowing this beach became at the first is Perfect Place to escape the boiling temperature at their Bethel Island home. We are outdoors, cool breeze going by and we are distance from other parties so i think its all pretty good. A lot of people had the same idea and that of course raises concerns about spreading covid 19. But after trying to discourage beachgoers on several other occasions, the city has surrendered to public will and agreed to keep the beaches open through the holiday. But adding to the crowds at Half Moon Bay is the decision by its northern neighbor pacifica to close all its beaches and parking lots for the entire threeday begin. And that doesnt make a lot of sense to longtime resident jane. I think people need to be outdoors, with covid it sounds like the indoors we are worried about. That is kind of the reason i wish they didnt close the beaches. The city says if they just closed the parking lots to discourage visitors they would have jammed the neighborhoods with cars so the beaches had to be closed completely as well. But no one on the beaches means no one on the sidewalks and no customers at the pacific java coffee shop. Holiday weekends are huge. We will probably be down maybe a third of what we could be. And we will still be down for that general we can because they close the beaches. It is not an easy call, pacifica chose the path of safety and businesses will pay a hefty price for it. Meanwhile Half Moon Bay took a pragmatic route and is holding its breath that decision doesnt go viral. Dan says he sees both sides but understands there is no one right solution. You know sometimes you have to play it by ear, so its on life terms, that is all it is. Half moon bay officials felt they would have difficulty closing city beaches with the nearby state owned beaches open through the holiday but pacifica is not alone, santa cruz has also decided to mostly close its public beaches for the long weekend, keeping crowds from gathering is just one reason. The city also wants to make sure hotel spaces kept free for any wildfire evacuees that may still need it. We are asking hotel owners to please accommodate evacuees whenever and wherever possible. And make the local individuals a priority over visitors from out of town. Santa cruz did make a compromise to give people some relief from the heat. Beach access will be allowed every day from 4 pm to 8 pm. Another popular labor day destination was shut down this weekend. Lake berryessa, there were wildfires all around the lake and the closure is meant to keep graduate while allowing hundreds of workers to take care of maintenance. And in the east bay parks are open but theres not a whole lot you can do there. Swimming, temping, boating and barbecuing her band. We did see a few people speaking in some grill time today. Park picnic areas are also closed. Our reporter Wilson Walker joins us live from downtown pleasanton. Is anyone up for at least eating outside tonight . Reporter they are just starting to filtering as the shade makes its way across the street and all the tables behind me are not scorching hot. As weve been talking about the flex alert has raised the specter of more rolling blackouts. Pg e now raising the specter of more power shut off for next week. I will save you the time, if you are going out to try to get a generator, dont bother. We can order them, we order generators that they do have in stock. Again, there are so many being purchase that the manufacturer cant keep up with the demand. The demand is overwhelming. Thats what it is. Keith gilbert was hustling trying to meet the surge of demand he says the heat, covid, fires and power shut offs have made this visit is more of a survival outfitter. Its been ever since the real big fires. Weve had huge fires for the last four years now, right. How do you protect yourself. There are a lot of yetis or heavyduty rulers being sold because thats the only thing, it just hit fast. This year, it is everything. This weekend with limited options to get out of the house and the recurring threat of no power. If you cant cook, at least you can cook outside. Or you have your staycation or you have family coming over, youve got to do something. So if you are looking for a generator, its not just generators and its not just in our area, its across the country. Manufacturers are out of product. Weve been keeping an eye on Power Generation at the state level and youve been keeping an eye on it. I understand youve got an update. Well they are shooting out updates on their app and they just updated their alert to a stage ii emergency. I do know it is stage iii when they start the rolling blackouts. We start to come back on demand a little, but the available capacity has also come down. We are buying a lot of energy right now. So when the sun goes down, the seller stops kicking out energy. We have to buy a lot of energy from the rest of the west coast. That happens literally hour by hour, sort of treating what they have to give them what the price is, its sort of this kind of wild west inc. For energy. The numbers are pretty dynamic moment to moment as they try to meet the energy demands. So stay tuned, tomorrow is probably the day were they really need more juice. Apparently stage iii emergency is customers experiencing one hour rotating lockouts and stage ii is right next to that. So we will stay tuned and see if it continues to be bad. Stay with kpix 5 and kpix. Com for continuing coverage of the dangerous heat through the newscast and throughout the weekend. You will find links to more information on closed beaches, open cooling centers and the statewide effort to keep the power on. Swimming was offlimits that one public pool in the east bay today for a very different reason. A small fire broke out at the Aquatic Center in martinez after someone apparently broken. Fire crews rescued a woman from a storage room just before 8 this morning. We are told the facility was closed and locked at the time. The fire damage was minor but the woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The Aquatic Center which has been open for swim reservations was kept closed for the day read in San Jose Police say a man has died after being hit by an ambulance on mckee road. Paramedics inside immediately jumped out to try to help the victim who later died at the hospital. Police say the victim was not in a crosswalk. A San Francisco jail described as dangerous, dilapidated, seismically unfit is closing for good. The crumbling hall of justice jail on bryant street has long been seen as a hazard with reports of sewage leaks, rat infestations and asbestos. The mayor said closing the jail is just another step toward reform. Look out below, fishermen are hauling in a dangerous catch of one california river. We got into the boat and realized it was a bomb. That wasnt the only explosive to surface that day. Plus, why the smoky air could get a lot worse even with the big bay area fires nearly out. And the new trend popping up on craigslist and the warning from cal fire not to buy into it. Stomach and we have a reminder, kpix 5 has a new app, for life 24 7 access, you can download it in the the heat didnt stop kids and families from volunteering at parks today. They were spotted picking up trash and cleaning up neighborhoods in san jose as part of the annual canha falla coastal cleanup. If you like this is a little more beneficial because we can see that impact directly and we can make sure the trash doesnt flow into the creek or any other body of water. Coastal cleanup dates back to the 1980s and is normally held as one large event up and down the coast but this year its been extended to all saturdays in september for social distancing. A fishing guide has a whopper of a tale to tell after reeling in a life pipe bomb on the sacramento river. He thinks he knows why it was there. Weve got lawn chairs and stuff like that. But nothing could prepare john for what he would pull out over the weekend. My fatherinlaw had the net ready and we thought it was like an anchor, so we put the net away and got the lineup and got it right to the boat and my fatherinlaw was like its a bomb get to the front of the boat. It was reeled in near the mouth of battle creek on the sacramento river. As they waited for the Sheriffs Office to arrive a fisherman nearby called out from the river. We seen him hug something and he said we hooked another bomb. The bomb squad leader confirmed both items to be live pipe bombs. Cannon thinks his runin with the bombs could be from other fishermen trying to cut corners. A think they are trying to blow up salmon, knocking them out, and having them float up. Thats what i think. The Sheriffs Office is now urging other fishermen in the area to be careful. And the ones who planted the bombs, knock it off. That recordbreaking stretch of spare the air days will stretch on through at least monday. Labor day will mark three full weeks of smoky skies, the latest extension is mainly for smog. But the lingering wildfire smoke is not helping. San francisco has opened up three libraries to people seeking relief from the smoke in the heat they are the main branch on larkin, the Chinatown Branch on powell and the mission bay ranch on fourth street. The facility on oakdale avenue is also open. We have the heat and we definitely had the smoke. And there looks like there is smoke from a distant fire that could had into the bay area. If there wasnt so much other stuff going on, this would be a huge story. This is live satellite, looking at the list two hours of updated satellite imagery. This is starting right now, and its the creek fire, have you heard of it . No, it just really started to go today, and that is enormous. Thats a lot of smoke being put into the sky and just for perspective, that fire is burning in fresno county. Heres sacramento, you are not seeing any new plumes of smoke from our fires, this one is dwarfing all of that. Those are massive pyro cumulus clouds and that tells you that there is immense amount of heat and fuel getting burned right now. As far as back here at home, if you watch the plume of smoke, most of it is getting brought up toward tahoe. They will not see the sunset in tahoe, it will be all smoke in the sky as we get into tonight. All we need is a subtle shift in the wind, and its really close in terms of getting the smoke. But for the airquality forecast is not necessarily for smoke or that pm 2. 5 that comes from the smoke, this concern is for ozone. Its a subtle difference but its an important one. If you take all that organic matter floating around in our air and you put an intense heatwave on like this come all the energy from the sun turns that stuff into ozone. And now that is the concern through monday. It is still in airquality concern but you should know that there is a difference, you dont want to breathe either of them in. Even if the smoke doesnt seem all that bad, you cannot see or smell ozone. Its totally invisible, and you dont want to breathe it in. These were the daytime highs, im just going to review where we were for saturday before i show you sunday. Getting into the 104 degree range in length, still hot toward the coast, better but still hot. And the north bay, not any better, 104 in santa rosa and 102 in napa. And tomorrow, i will give you everybodys daytime highs, they are all about 4 to 5 degrees warmer in general, we should think of sunday as for to 5 degrees warmer meaning we will be in the 104 two 100 a degree range. Walnut creek 106, san ramon 107. Not to say this is a picnic in the bay, it is not San Francisco will be 1 degree shy of the record. It will be 106 in santa rosa and 109 up north in ukiah. And the 7 day forecast, all the way past tuesday, that is when the triple digits finally go away. But tomorrow is the peak of the heat hurried its not the only day to be concerned about but at least its good to know. Tomorrow we will top out. Then it starts to get a little better. Monday is still a dangerously hot day outside. I will be back with more on this in the next half hour. And we will talk about why tuesday of next week there are some fire weather concerns. Pressure is mounting to get a vaccine approved and ready for nationwide deployment. In a letter obtained by cbs news the director of the cdc is calling on all states to have Vaccine Distribution sites fully operational by november 1. Just two days before the general election. That target date is now raising questions about whether the white house is deliberately applying political pressure to speed up the process. We have safety effectiveness, quality, good logistics and a good safety monitoring system, and if we dont screw up the trust, a safe and effective vaccine can save lives. But thats a tall order to come up with in the remaining time before that. It has nothing to do with elections. This has to do with delivering safe and effective vaccines to people as quickly as possible in saving lives. There is so much to talk about, i will spend most of the time talking about the heat, the peak and first, because we have a significant new fire just take off today, take a look at lake tahoe. I want to show you what has happened over the last three hours. And then all of a sudden a very ominous thick plume of smoke came over the entire lake, and its not only over lake tahoe. I want to show you where that smoke is coming from. Off to the east, there is a huge fire that was not there yesterday. It is the creek fire burning in fresno county. It started last night. And because it is so hot and so dry across california today, this thing exploded. It is 36,000 acres right now and did not exist yesterday. There are containment on it and no surprise, that is a massive pyro cumulus cloud coming off the flames telling us there is an intense amount of heat. I just showed you tahoe, look over here. 20 of smoke going into the Central Valley from this fire which just started and its creeping its way toward the bay area. Most of that will be elevated should it get here. The wind is working in our favor right now but dont be surprised if you see more smoke in the sky. Locally the fires are under control but because it is so hot and so dry the fire was able to run. The bay area air Quality Management district has extended the spare the air through monday. Thats nothing different, but what is different, the concern with this going into monday isnt necessaily so much the smoke or the fine particulate matter weve been reading in for the last several days. The concern with this now is the ozone. There is so much smoke sitting around, when we hit a heat wave like this all that direct sunlight and those high temperatures turns that organic matter into ozone. And that is a whole different level of concern, and you cannot see it or smell it. Whereas with the smoke you at least know what you are up against. With the ozone air quality district inks its bad enough that they extended the spare the air through monday. Lets get to the heatwave, here are tomorrows numbers, livermore at 109. Concord at 106, same as santa rosa. Where do the record stack up . If we do the math, the ones in red are breaking tomorrow. But oakland and San Francisco, when you hear 91 degrees in San Francisco, the fact that you are not taking a record is no consolation. He will be 1 degrees shy. Lets get as many daytime highs in here as we can. These are all about 5 to 6 degrees above where you were today. So that places us up to 104 in campbell tomorrow, 103 in milpitas. 106 in concord and walnut creek, 109 in livermore. Numbers for the east bay in the mid90s, santa rosa goes to 106 and we will see temperatures go to 109. When does it get better . I the time we get to wednesday, thats when things will change. One other item i have had a chance to talk about, this cooldown will come with a dramatic shift in wind overhead and we will start to experience our first offshore wind event meaning the wind will blow in from the Northeast Area that will raise some fire concern in the mountains and the big question is what will that do to the fire that just started in is no county.
