Erie, i guess is how i would describe it. I looked outside and it looks like doomsday. You can tell something is horribly going wrong. Where is this coming from . Fires to the north exploding in size. The huge smoke plumes are drifting right over us and fires raging in oregon and washington are also now sending their smoke our way. Knows fires in Northern California blowing the smoke towards us, but it is not just Northern California. Lets zoom out for a wider perspective. This is a satellite image of the smoke visible from space before the sun went down. The august complex and the north complex which includes the bear fire blowing smoke towards us. If the wind blew from the east, the smoke from the creek fire would blow towards us. He blew in from the south, the smoke from Southern California would go in. You are seeing that mixed with the marine layer right now. Even a breeze off the pacific ocean, which you think would help us out, the smoke in oregon is blowing offshore and it looks around and comes towards us. We will be dealing with this for a while, in terms of poor air quality and that funky look in the atmosphere. That comes from the smoke particles at the way the smoke particles filter out the sunlight. Usually, the light we see filters the light of the rainbow. The smoke does not produce exactly the same effect. It is the shorter wavelengths. It is the blue and purple end of the visible spectrum that is more likely to get bounced around. The technical term is scattering. What makes it through is the longer wave of light and that is the red and orange end of the spectrum. The same thing when you are looking in the sunset, when youre looking toward the horizon youre looking at more atmosphere, now we are looking for more smoke articles and all we see is yellow and orange sohick it blocks the light at entirely. Earlier than normal sunset, even though technically the sun is still above the horizon. The airquality map may not be quite as bad as you would expect with that orange sky overhead. We will talk about the role the marine layer plays in that in a few minutes. Skim Team Coverage continues with kpix 5s kenny choi on what this orange sky means for our health. Reporter that orange glow that we saw dominating the skies across the bay area earlier does not necessarily mean that there is poor air quality. It is one that aqi index number gets too high there are Health Concerns and how it can impact your lungs. Even with particles from ash and soot falling, some workers have no choice but to be outside. It is not the best situation, but got to pay the bills. Reporter the orange, ominous skies can be deceiving. When we are not getting an apex of the smoke because we have this heavy fog layer and marine layer in between. An if that protection disappears in the air quality gets worse, it is the final particulate matter that could lead to health issues. People with preexisting heart and lung disease are the ones at most risk. Particles large, say apm kid, a particular size of 10 microns, your note can filter it out. Reporter an air quality index of 50 or below means good air. When it is 100 or more, it is no longer safe for sensitive groups including printed women, children, seniors and people with respiratory issues like asthma. When they inhale particles, small particles that can large deep in the lungs like wildfire smoke particles, that can cause more airway inflammation. Reporter increased inflammation can lead to more serious issues for higher risks individuals, but still a concern for those considered healthy. What he does for people with healthy lungs is increases the risk of infection. Reporter what type of infection that could worsen with particles large and deep into the lungs is covid19. If you get some wildfire smoke, causing some inflammation, that sort of adds to the fire and increases the risk for covid19. Reporter the longterm Health Effects for most people is not quite as clear. We did talk to one researcher at Stanford University who studied firefighters with prolonged exposure to smoke their entire careers. They did find increases in certain types of cancer and other Health Related illnesses and we are live in San Francisco in pacific heights, kenny choi kpix 5. Lets take a live look at sfo. You think the smoky conditions with slow flights heading in and out of the bay area. The airport told us there has actually been no impact on air traffic. It sure was a strange site for passengers though. One woman took this video while landing at sfo. Another passenger captured this clip from over the planes wing, that orange haze as far as the eye can see. The way it looks, crazy like apocalyptic or something. When i started work at 6 30 this morning it was reddish, not even this color. The first thing i did was take a picture and send it home to everybody i know at how crazy it was at 1 00 in the afternoon. I was worried the flight was not going to make it in. I called ahead to make sure, they said no, no problem. You could not see anything on this end. When all of this passes, the carwash will be a very popular place because it seems like this, ash raining down, covering the cars in daly city. This is happening all over the bay area. The smoke and the haze has created an orange glow, similar to the one we are experiencing here. This is crazy. We have lived here for 15 years and we have never had to be prepared to evacuate. Hurricane force winds in the Pacific Northwest are making fighting these wildfires extremely challenging. Forecasters expect winds of 75 Miles Per Hour to turn small blazes into monster fires. Called joins us here again. It is hard to believe that smoke is making its way all the way down to us. And beyond. The whole west coast is covered in smoke right now. Some of the pictures from oregon even worse than what we saw in the bay area. It just looked red in points during the day yesterday. Satellite indicated hotspots here. You can see where they are clustered around the largest fires in oregon, washington state, and california as color heavy smoke. It is everywhere up and down the west coast. It is not going to go anywhere for a while, especially the upper levels of the atmosphere. This is an experimental forecast model that we will start it at 11 00 this evening and the red and purple indicates the most smoke overhead. We will go through 11 00 a. M. On friday, that is as far in the future as this particular computer looks. You can see where it moves around a little but does not change to a great extent. One piece of good news, while it looks eerie, and tomorrow will be another weird, orange day, that his father up in the atmosphere because the fires are so far away. The local fires we have had over the last several weeks that are mostly contained now, produced a lowlevel smoke that got trapped. The marine layer comes into play. Usually when we look at the atmosphere, the lowest levels are the warmest. It gets colder as you go up. Along the west coast, the marine layer comes into play and that changes things a little bit. Usually, warm air rises up. As long as the surrounding air is cooler, it will keep going up. That disperses any smoke near ground level. That changes once the marine layer makes its way in because we get what is called an inversion. The temperature actually goes up as you go up and that traps things on either side of the boundary. If we have lowlevel smoke, that gets trapped. That has been diminishing as the fires locally have been more contained. It also keeps the upperlevel smoke trapped in the upper levels of the atmosphere. What we are seeing is the sun being filtered out, producing that orange glow, it is not settling all the way down toward the ground level to severely reduce our air quality. It is still an issue, it is going to be an issue for the next several days. Worst air condition in the north bay. Unhealthy for sensitive groups, but the way the atmosphere looked today, you would expect it to be in red or purple. Because it is farther up in the atmosphere, it is why it is not as bad, necessarily as it looks. It looks terrible. I mean this is unbelievable right now. You can see the glow from oracle park right now. The marine layer is making its way in. That is the fog in the city, jumbled together with the smoke. 59 degrees downtown, otherwise temperatures in the 60s. We will drop down a few more degrees. Upper 50s to around 60 degrees early tomorrow morning. Tomorrows high temperatures are still going to be below average. I think we may be a little warmer today as some of that upperlevel smoke gets mixed around a bit, still below normal this time of year and another low confidence forecast. We missed todays forecast at high temperatures by a lot. Probably the most i have had in 20 years of doing this. Tomorrow is another day that could happen where we will be low 60s along the coast, low to mid 60s on the south end of the bay with meat 70s in the santa clara valley. The warm spot will be warm because of the east side of the diablo range, upper 70s for the trivalley. Mid to upper 60s around 70s in the bay. Low 70s for the north bay and farther not north. The fire conditions will still be a challenge. Temperatures level off as we head through the next several days. Hopefully that smoke gets mixed around a bit as we head into the weekend. We will take a look at Different Levels of smoke in the atmosphere coming up at 11 00.
