KPIX KPIX 5 News At 11pm July 12, 2024

Alone. Tonight we get some expert advice on how to cope. A dire warning from climate scientists tonight, if you think the fire and extreme heat are bad now, just wait. Things will get worse until we start being serious about doing something. Now at 11, and streaming on cbsn bay area, these eerie orange scenes all over the region today and people we spoke to kept coming back to one word, apocalyptic. Weve got Team Coverage of this unprecedented situation tonight. Meteorologist paul heggen will join us with a closer look at this otherworldly set up. That is exactly the right word. These are not pictures of her, they are from the surface of mars and titan. So literally the bay area looked like Something Else in the solar system today. I want to get into why exactly the atmosphere looked orange, why not green or purple, thats because of the smoke, but specifically how the sunlight interacts with that smoke. Just think of the light broken up in the rainbow, on one side is blue and violet with green in the middle, that is short enough that it is more likely to interact with small particles and that leaves the longer wavelength on the red and orange side of the spectrum. The more smoke is in the atmosphere, the more the blue and violet light gets bounced out and we are left with that eerie orange glow. Eventually there is so much of it, especially when the sun is just coming up and about to go down, it just blocks it entirely. So it doesnt just turn things orange, but eventually it dims it. As orange as things looked, it actually wasnt that bad in terms of air quality. Not great, but youd expect a lot more purple dots on this map. With as ominous as the sky looked, the air wasnt even above moderate for most of the day, and this is the reason why. Thats the marine layer, here is the smoke heres the marine layer. We had a layer cake of stuff over us, so in addition to keeping the air relatively clean where we are, this also added another layer of stuff to make those colors more dramatic. Wherever you were today, it probably looked smoky, but it didnt look as bad as the city. Look at what it looks like today, and im sure youve seen this all day long. This has been the imagery on everybodys phone, computer, all day long. It is not enhanced. The reason why it look like the apocalypse here, in livermore, it was bad but not like the world was ending. We are going to look at the forecast for smoke, now im going to bring in the forecast for smoke that will be at the higher levels of the atmosphere and you will see pretty much it covers the entire map. And as we play this forward, the smoke in the upper levels doesnt change that much. But down here on the ground, where we all live, watch what happens, this is a different reading, different forecast. You are looking at the stuff near the ground for us, and tomorrow, while we are still going to pull in some smoke from the upper levels, we are still going to get the benefit of our marine layer and our onshore flow. But the bottom layer will help clean the air out a little, so there is some good news with that. I can breathe a little easier hearing that. And tonight we are hearing that waking up to what looks like mars is taking a toll on many peoples dental health. Many people say this eerie scene is giving them apocalypse anxiety. Reporter right now we are at a cafe in north beach, its 11 00 at night, its dark, and it supposed to be, but let me show you some video i shot earlier today, this is 10 00 in the morning, and this is very same spot, nearly as dark, with a tangerine sky, this is otherworldly, nothing like ive ever seen. And for a lot of people, it was unsettling. Todays creepy orange sky made a strong impression. It just kind of feels like the sky is falling, its heavy. Some people told me they felt unsettled all day. Distracted, anxious. It is apocalyptic. I felt like we were under attack or something. This is very unusual, this is unprecedented for anyone. This therapist says she is not surprised people are feeling uneasy. I would say it is a Pretty Healthy reaction. We are wired to have a what is this reaction to something that is potentially dangerous and especially something that is very new. While it can be explained by science, it is natural to people having an outside reaction to seeing the orange instead of blue. Especially because of covid19. Our isolation is taking away some of our usual coping mechanisms. Still, adapting to strange norms has gotten us this far. It feels like one more thing. Also, everything passes and time will continue on. This will pass at some point. Back to reality tonight. The reality of these fires, three people are dead, a dozen more are missing as the bear fire rips through ute and plumas counties. Meanwhile the Butte Community devastated by campfire two years ago is reliving that nightmare once again. We spotted many homes burned to the ground today, so far 200 structures have been damaged or lost, but one sign of hope, a church left standing in a Small Community of berry creek. The Firefighters Credit Defensible Space around the building. Tonight new evacuations were ordered in Southern California with the human caused a fire in San Bernardino county that is still not 20 contained. Earlier today a fire helicopter dumped water on the flames to try to extinguish flareups and hotspots around structures. More than 12,000 acres have burned since saturday, Officials Say the blaze was sparked at a gender reveal party. If it seems like the wildfires are getting worse and our weather is getting even more extreme, tonight some climate scientists told andrea nakano, just wait. Reporter i talked to some professors from uc berkeley a few hours ago and they said fires and intense heat have always been part of californias identity. But what is alarming them is the rate at which these cases are occurring. Is this all part of Climate Change in your opinion . I dont even think it is an opinion, i think it is most definitely. Fires have ravaged california burning more than 2 million acres, a record. All the smoke from californias fires is trapped thousands of feet high in the atmosphere as sky drone captured the gloomy orange glow over the bay area. It is going to change the way we go about living our lives in the sense that this is the new normal. Climate change expert say they look at the frequency of events and fires and scientists have seen this coming for a while. All of the signs are very consistent and these events have been predicted for decades. For example, an extremely rare triple digit day in San Francisco just happened a few days ago. Could become the citys new average. It might not be 20 or 30 days of summer, but by the end of the century some models predict the whole summer will look like this. Uc berkeley has been a part of conducting Forest Management to creating innovative policy to battle Climate Change. Things will get worse until we get serious about doing something. Quick update on pg es emergency power shut offs, service has been restored to everyone in Sonoma County and to 72 of the customers in napa county. Pg e says inspections revealed 27 incidents of damage so far. Still to come, we discover why thousands of renters living in belowmarket rate housing are about to lose their homes, and soon. The reality of the matter is this is a human tragedy. Plus, even the 49ers are having great trouble these days. Tonight the multimillion dollar dispute playing out over levis stadium. It was already one of lots of people have been struggling to pay their rent during the pandemic. And now this. Thousands of portable Housing Units are expected to be converted to market rate housing in the next decade. As Susie Steimle shows us, in our original series project home, tenants often dont find out until its too late. Ive lived here over 30 years. Vanessa franklin will never forget the feeling she had when she first walked into her home at fosters lending all those years ago. I saw all of this room, and i says, my god this would be a blessing, and it turned out to be that way. She just got out of a bad marriage and needed a home for two boys. Thats when she found this place, its whats known as a low market rate unit, each tenant pays 30 of their income toward rent, they are extremely difficult to get, they are rare and every day they are disappearing. Someone came to the door new years eve and handed us an envelope and it was just a shock, i mean, couldnt believe it. The status at fosters lending was established 30 years ago and expires december 31 of this year. To be able to qualify, you have to prove every single year that you cannot pay for a market rate apartment, so vanessa and tenants and 74 other units have no choice but to leave. A lot of us are seniors. We have people over 80 years old, and they really dont know what they are going to do. This is really just the tip of the iceberg. The ceo of the California Housing Partnership says these kind of bad surprises happen to tenants like this all the time and whats worse, right now the state doesnt have a mechanism to track all the Affordable Housing contracts that are about to expire. Because the developments out there like fosters lending arent even in the database yet. But what the group has been able to track, nearly 32,000 affordable rental homes are at risk of turning to market rate in the next 10 years, more than 9000 of those are scheduled in the next year. But fosters lending is proof that there are many more. There are loopholes in the existing preservation that have allowed owners of developments like fosters lending to not file documents regularly, that are transparent. The reality is that this is really a human tragedy. It is a orthjust in e city. Acouncilmember of cityisbeen trying stri a deal of fosters lending. Trying to acquire the property so we can preserve it. And that is not a feasible option due to the cost that it will take, up to 2 million. And we do not have a willing seller. The group was able to pass a state law that would require all Affordable Housing groups to report their Expiration Date to the state. The database likely wont exist until next year, and all it does is track expirations, it does not incentivize owners to help preserve this rare housing. The incentives are just not always there. Thats right, they are looking at realo make money. For vanessa this will mean displacement. She will move to georgia, and for dozens of other seniors, it could put them on the street. Its hard, really, really hard. Especially when you spend your life doing everything you are supposed to do. Knew at 11, even the 49ers are not immune to the pandemic these days. The team is asking santa clara for a rent reduction. The city says that the niners failed to pay last months rent, nearly 3 million, and they only plan to pay half 1 million this month. In a letter to the city the niners say they had to cancel two preseason games and Health Orders dont allow gatherings so they want to rent reduced by 20 . The City Attorney says the nfl commissioner and Players Association canceled those preseason games. And so that is not in the grounds of the lease. We did inform the 49ers and they nevertheless said they did not intend to pay the rent, and when the rent came due they did not pay it. The 49ers released a statement saying in part mr. Doyle is again misrepresenting the facts. The september rent payment will be paid in fu quite a sight to see. It throws you off because then you look at the time of day and its 11 am right now and it seems like it is dusk, yet, it is just unexplainable i think. People packed the hill at alamo square taking pictures of the painted ladies with the orange sky as an added backdrop. Bay area landmarks like weve never seen before. Lets check back in with paul heggen and darren peck. It was just eerie looking with that orange sky overhead. This is one of the best pictures ive seen of social media all day. Just that eerie glow, we talked about how that happened but it had actual effects on her weather as well. Temperatures only made it into the 60s across the bay area, only up to 70 degrees for the warm spot in livermore. And when we miss the forecast by this much we owe you an explanation more than just oh, it was smoking outside. Dont be hard on yourself paul, by missing that forecast for 25 degrees, everybody did. Let me show you why come all you have to do is look at california from space today and that is all smoke. Take a look at that full screen. In addition to the smoke blocking out the sun, those 25 degrees had to go somewhere. We still had that solar insulation coming in from the atmosphere and it hit the top layer of the smoke. Watch that loop, you will see those white, puffy clouds develop right there, you see them, cant miss them. There was no forecast for thunderstorms or clouds today, yet they developed. Because there was so much warmth being absorbed by the top layer of smoke that the air started to rise off of it so fast that it started to develop cumulus clouds. We couldnt see it at all because all we saw was the smoke and thats where the 25 degrees went, into those clouds. Pretty unusual in a sight we hopefully dont have to see a lot of going forward. Needless to say weve made some significant adjustments for the forecast tomorrow. The upper level winds are still going to be sending that air toward us, things will rearrange a bit as we head toward the weekend, but the still plenty of smoke out over the pacific. But from the southwest, thats where it is the least, so that will help. And this storm system offshore, there are signs that it will approach the coast and that will crack the entirety of this weather pattern if it could drop some rain in the pacific northwest. Air quality will still be an issue but not as bad as you would think based on how things look. The worst spots will be the north bay and inland in the east bay. Saturday and sunday is just too soon to focus on any particular trouble spots. Right now it is still cool out there, you can fairly see downtown, temperatures will not drop a whole lot more for the rest of the night, basically only another degree or two, we will warm up a little more tomorrow and some more sunshine will filter through those clouds. The air quality will not be great but you can at least get out for a short walk. Put on a mask and protect yourself, temperatures into the mid70s and high temperatures well below average, but, they will be a little warmer than what we saw today that progress will continue into the weekend, but it will not be overly hot hurried temperatures will be in the 80s inland with upper 60s on the coast. The 49ers get some great news on the starting linebacker ahead of sundays nfl opener. And remember what the giants used to have . Although scoring runs, right . Not this we love our new home. Theres so much space. We have a guestroom now. But, we have aunts. Youre slouching again, ted. Expired, expired. Expired. Thanks, aunt bonnie. Ho youan ep it expired, expired. At least geico makes bundling our home and Car Insurance easy. Which helps us save a lot of money oh, teddy. Did you get my friend request . Uh, ill have to check. doorbell ringing aunt jonis here for bundling made easy, go to geico. Com. Hello . Hey everybody, the mariners ancisco, butfe san all ng n francisco giants. Bottom of the seventh, up 20, tucker comes on, empty on the slide and catch, would have been the third out, instead two runs. At the bottom of nine, ramon laureano, payback, dries in the winning run, days when 32, they are now 5 1 2 games up over houston. And the 49ers certainly have their sights on our return trip to the super bowl. Today a practice it looked a little more like the orange bowl. I feel like im in the book of eli.
