I did, i watched the whole thing and i thought it was fantastic. I didnt know what to expect. I thought, you know, this could be really kind of funky. But i thought it was really human and really moving. So, im not unbiased, but i thought it was great. Stephen well, how do you think they did bringing people together given the fact they cant actually be together . I thought they did that really well. First of all, the kids opening up with the National Anthem<\/a> was extraordinarily moving and then, you know, even with the hokey thing where they had the people at home applauding for the speeches laughter even that was cool. I thought the whole thing i mean, it was an event for the times. A little bit weird, but i think it did the job. Stephen i thought so, too. I was quite moved. And i thought it was nice of Bernie Sanders<\/a> to comb his hair. It was a great gesture. laughter now, you were in the running to be bidens Vice President<\/a> ial pick. Kamala harris, of course, was announced last week. How do you think that affects your chances . laughter i think it reduces them to slim to none. Stephen okay. You have been very supportive of Kamala Harris<\/a>. What do you think that choice means for the Democratic Party<\/a> . Well, stephen, i think it means, you know, really something more importantly for the nation. Its the first time weve had an africanamerican woman on a national ticket, daughter of immigrants, somebody with extraordinary qualifications who is going to be a tremendous Vice President<\/a> of the United States<\/a>, and im excited, im proud, its historic, and i think its going to be a great thing when joe biden and Kamala Harris<\/a> are together, trying to put our country back together, unify us and, you know, bring out the best in us for a change. Stephen now, a lot of the speeches and a lot of the videos rolled in tonight were about wht things are like, you know, here at home in america. The trump administrations failure to address the covid crisis, the Economic Disaster<\/a> that came in the wake of that, protests in the streets. Not a lot looking outward toward the rest of the world. As former u. N. Ambassador and National Security<\/a> advisor, whats at stake for the u. S. Role in the world with a second trump term versus a biden presidency . Im so glad you asked that, stephen, because i think people may not fully appreciate just how much we have lost in terms of our National Security<\/a> and our standing in the world over the last four years. Our allies dont know what to make of us. Were not leading them with confidence based on principle and shared values. Were lying from the white house. The president of the United States<\/a> is a liar and the whole world knows it. We are incompetent. We are supposed to be the most scientifically advanced country in the world, and we have been at the bottom of the heap in dealing with the pandemic. The president praises Vladimir Putin<\/a> and kim jongun and thinks xi jinping, the leader of china, is the great leader to be emulated. Its just nuts. Everything is upside down, and im deeply, deeply concerned that, if we had four more years of this, we would not be an america that anybody can recognize, the situation would be unsalvageable, our National Security<\/a> and standing in the world irreparably damaged. Its a lif and death situation were in. Its not too extreme a statement to make both domestically and internationally. Stephen as a former ambassador, can you speak to the importance of americas soft power and our moral example around the world and the example of being able to point at free and Fair Elections<\/a> in the United States<\/a> . Well, we process to believe in the dignity and the equality and the humanity of every human being. We process to believe in freedom of the press and free speech, democracy and Fair Elections<\/a>, and we are modeling the opposite straight out of 1600 pennsylvania avenue. And it appears to the world to be utterly hypocritical. And when we look to a place like belarus, for example, where the people are finally standing up against decades of dictatorship, the white house is silent, and war example is not one that isi weve got to change that because, when countries dont and peoples dont trust us, dont admire us, dont want to study here, dont want to emigrate here, it means our ability to bring countries together in causes that serve our interests, whether its fighting terrorism or fighting a pandemic or dealing with Climate Change<\/a> is far diminished. We cant lead if others dont want to follow us, and that the risk we face with four more years of donald trump. Stephen who benefits from a second term of donald trump internationally . Vladimir putin and xi jinping. Stephen okay. Thats chilling. Okay, in 2017, lets talk about some of the things happening at home. In 2017, you were National Security<\/a> advisor at the time, i believe, you gave this quote to the washington post. You said, one thing people will think about but keeps me up at night, the risk of a major pandemic disease outbreak. That kept you up in 2017. How are you sleeping these days . laughs not very well, stephen. Look, i said that this was up with of my last days in the white house right before we handed over to the trump administration. I was meeting with a group of reporters, and they asked me, what are you worried about most that other americans may not be focused on and i said the threat of a global pandemic, because i have known and many experts in National Security<\/a> and Global Health<\/a> and development have known this was inevitable. The only thing we didnt know precisely is when it would hit and what type of disease it would be. So this is about as bad as it could get bar one scenario, stephen, which is if this were like an avian flu that was even more deadly. You know some of these avian flu viruses are just as transmittable as covid but they can kill 50 or more of the people who contract it. So this is bad, its really bad, but it could be worse, and the lack of preparedness on the part of this administration and the bungling of this every step of the way, i think willful bungling, in some regards, is killing americans, over 170,000 already dead and counting. Stephen well, after working on the u. S. Response to ebola, you oversaw something called the Pandemic Preparedness Office<\/a> which president stable genius disbanded. And then, when this hit, said no one could have seen this coming. How do you feel when you hear him say no one could have seen this coming, when you personally worked on preparing for this . It makes my head want to explode. The president of the United States<\/a> got up in front of the American People<\/a> on march 19 of this year and said nobody could have seen this coming, who could have predicted . Well, george w. Bushs administration predicted, the barack obamajoe Biden Administration<\/a> predicted. We all knew it was coming, and they not only disbanded the ofy not only discarded the pandemic playbook we handed them and all the lessons of the tabletop exercises that we conducted during the transition, they then denied the severity of it. Donald trump compared it to the flu, said it would miraculously go away when the weather warmed up, and every step of the way from testing to setting up sufficient capacity in our hospitals to acquiring ventilators and p. P. E. , to reopening prematurely, to telling our kids and our teachers to go back to school when its unsafe. He has put his personal political interests ahead of the health and the security and the economy of the United States<\/a>, and we are paying a deadly, deadly price. Ambassador rice, you said recently that donald trump is essentially giving russia his blessing to interfere with our election. What do we know about foreign interference so far . Well, we know at least what the Intelligence Community<\/a> said publicly recently. That russia is again actively trying to interfere in our elections, and theyre doing it through a variety of means. Theyre doing it by trying to potentially inject themselves into our voting systems and our voting rules and manipulate the actual mechanics of the election. They are every day on social media stephen i hate to interrupt you, but does that mean literally, like, affect the voting outcome . In 2016, they tried to infiltrate the voting systems of a number of different states. They didnt succeed at that time in actually manipulating the voter roles, so if you show up at the poll and youre not registered where you think you should be registered, and they didnt succeed in trying to mess with the vote tallies. But i dont think that we should assume that just because they didnt succeed the first time they wont continue to try. So thats one concern, of the most extreme version. But they are intervening in other ways we know for sure are very serious, spreading disinformation, pitting americans against each other on social media, causing us to doubt the integrity of our democracy. The and then we also know that russian individuals are working with member of congress and folks close to donald trump, like rudy giuliani, to try to fabricate disinformation that they can use against joe biden via ukraine. Thats the whole thing we all watched during impeachment. So there are all these different ways and donald trump has essentially said very publicly, hed welcome foreign assistance, and he went out on the south lawn and asked china to intervene after hed already tried to manipulate the Ukrainian Government<\/a> into intervening. So we have a president who is seeking actively, the interference on foreign governments, hostile foreign governments, in several cases, against his opponent in order to win. Not to mention the fact that he says hes not leaving office, perhaps, or hes going to postpone the election or, as he said today, apparently, if i dont win by definition, the election is corrupt. This is craziness. Stephen yeah, it is craziness. His feelings must be hurt about that china thing, though, because my understanding is it has been reported that china and iran would favor joe biden. Now, an equivalency has been made between that and russian interference. What is the difference between those two things . Well, first of all, if you read carefully what the Intelligence Community<\/a> said, they said russia is in a category all of its own, doing much more active measures to interfere in our elections, and then it says russia obviously very much wants donald trump reelected. It then assessed that china and iran to a lesser extent and in a far more overt way particularly with china is basically just trying to put public messages out there that could be of some influence in various different parts of the country, but not the covert means that russia is undertaking. You know, they threw china and iran in there and tried to create a false equivalency for who werent not paying close attention, i imagine to curry te favor of donald trump whos put enormous pressure on the Intelligence Community<\/a> to underestimate the role of the russians in this. But russia is in a category all of its own, and they are the adversary in this particular regard that we need to be most mindful of. Stephen now, theres another threat to Fair Election<\/a> and thats Donald Trumps<\/a> attacks on the post office. What do people need to know about that . Well, what donald trump is trying to do is, first of all, discredit the safety and security of voting by mail whether absentee or mailin voting. And theres absolutely no credible evidence to suggest that its is any less secure to vote by mail or absentee, which is why donald trump himself is voting by absentee ballot. Stephen but as mark meadows said to jake tapper, there is no evidence that there isnt fraud. That is the most dishonest statement that ive even actually heard out of mark meadows, which is saying something. But in any event, now donald trump is taking it to another level, which is to disable the postal system ripping out post boxes, taking out sorting machines, putting in place rules that make it impossible for postal workers to do their jobs efficiently. Its unbelievable, and the American People<\/a> need to call b. S. On this because not only does it undermine and corrupt our democracy, which, by the way, hurts republicans as well as democrats. Thats messes everybody up and down the ballot, rural, urban, you name it. But it also means that veterans arent getting medicines and seniors arent getting their Social Security<\/a> checks, and all of us arent getting our birthday cards and the packages we need, and Small Businesses<\/a> are suffering. Its just ridiculous stephen i need my 5 from my grandmother. Exactly stephen now, trump hes nuts stephen trump has disrupted major relations with foreign countries, left the iran deal, negotiated with kim jongun, launched a trade war against china, pulled out of the paris agreement, got out of in what ss top iority be . Heing toma simultaneously, but the first with respect to International Relations<\/a> is renewing and repairing the trust that we have lost with our allies and making sure that they again know that we have shared interests and shared values. Its being clear about who our adversaries are, getting back into the paris climate agreement and dealing with this pandemic globally. Stephen, because im not sure americans fully understand, we could vaccinate every american tomorrow, and thats a hugely high hurdle we are far from meeting. But if the rest of the world does not have the vaccine and the ability to stamp out this virus, it can mutate and come back and hit us again.
