Strike teams operation provide an opportunity to deliver on the governors vision of systems that prioritize the customers experience, informed by data and great expertise. Though nelson is skeptical despite e. D. D. Trying to fix the broken system. I hope they do. Id like to get a phone call to get this squared away. Im sure people would like to get their money out of them. That was ryan hill reporting. Meanwhile, legislation just hit the governors desk that would force the state to follow its own rules about putting sensitive personal information on those employment checks. Well have that story coming up later in the news. New at 6 00, a popular south bay recreation spot is counting down to a closure. Anderson reservoir is about to get an upgrade. And while there is clearly a need for, kpix 5s john ramos reports some are shocked by how long it will be off limits. A lot of people from the south bay grew up playing here at Anderson Reservoir and theyre going to grow up a whole lot more before theyll be able to return here. Reporter in 2009, the earthen anderson dam was found to be seismically unsound. Beginning october 1st, the public will no longer be allowed near the lake as the water level is drawn down to almost nothing. As early as january 2021, we could have a very different kind of view of Anderson Reservoir. It will be that way for a long time. Reporter a very long time. Valley water officials predict the work wont be finished until 2031. First theyll dig a new outlet tunnel that will quadruple the amount of water that can be released under control. They couldnt release water fast enough in 2017 so it spilled over, flooding coyote creek and parts of san jose. Thanks to the oroville dam failure, theyre also required to replace the concrete spill way entirely. When that project is finished, theyll begin the seismic retro, removing the soil that could liquefy in a major earthquake. If that happens, it could wipe out part of the city of morgan hill. Brian lee will miss hiking the area for the next decade. But his home is directly below the dam. I get it. They need to drain the dam because, like, in case an earthquake happens, then it will flood the whole area and my house will get destroyed. I understand that. There will be no fishing, both, or hiking. In fact, the public wont be allowed in at all because of all the heavy equipment that will be working here. The reasons may be easy to understand but its still hard to wrap your mind around that timeframe. Ten years . I dont have an idea about that one. Today was malachi mendosas first visit to anderson lake. The next time he can skip stones here, hell be ready to enter college. This thing is going to be closed longer than youve been alive. What does that feel like . Feels like a long time for me to have good time together without any good time. Reporter currently the lake water is down to 18 of capacity and the place already feels deserted. Some day the lake will reopen, and Officials Say it will be better and safer than ever. Its just a little hard to picture that right now. I just imagine people are out there playing. Not a lot of people today though, is there . I just like to use my imagination. Great imagination. So imagine this. The upgrades may take a decade to complete but it only took about a year to build the original dam back in 1950. Plenty of people headed for the water today on this relatively clear weekend in more than a month. Westbound bridge traffic was heavy with cars. Thats of course a time lapse. Presumably headed for the coast. You definitely can tell the air quality is better. I feel comfortable. I feel good enough to ride. So its definitely better. Im feeling pretty good right now. I think that darren said it was worse but well get to him in a minute. Taking a live look at the lingering smoke air quality in effect for tomorrow. So far no spare the air alert. Now its starting to go downhill. San jose, we cant even see loma prieta. You can barely make out the silhouette of the mountains. Loma prieta peak with the Santa Cruz Mountains in the background. Theres a lot more haze. This from the top of the Sales Force Tower. Looking off toward the east. You can tell from that vantage point, weve certainly got our fair share of haze showing up in that view. Well put the scale back in front of this to reorient ourselves. Weve had it good for about the last week in the green category. Now were seeing not only the yellows and the moderates showing up but a lot of locations are registering higher than that. Here in the south bay, its moderate. If we look at concord, within the last hour or two, weve had the sensor go up to unhealthy for sensitive groups. Now we start to get to that range where we need to start being more aware of this. It came on quickly. Most of these sensors were fine yesterday. Look what happens when you get to Mendocino County. Go a little higher than that. Youre getting close to very unhealthy. Thats coming from the smoke off the august complex fire which is drifting our way. Ive got good news in terms of how were going to change that flow over the next couple days. Ill have the forecast on air quality in just a few minutes. For now, back over to you. Thank you so much.
