Reporter the nation and in late august, vie outside the Democratic National convention in chicago, around 10,000 protestors squared off with about 23,000 police and National Guard troops. And all hell broke loose. In less than a minute, what had been a relatively quiet crowd was a raging mob. Reporter seven months later, the government charged the suspected ring leaders with, among other things, conspiracy and crossing state lines to incite a riot. At first there were eight chicago defendants, jerry reuben, Abbey Hoffman, tom hayden, bobby seal, lee winner, and david dellinger. We werent arrested. We were chosen. Reporter their trial is now the subject of a new netflix film the trial of the chicago 7, written and directed by aaron sorkin. Were giving them exactly what they want, a stage and an audience. Reporter the movie has been in the works for 14 years. But sorkin says it took on a new urgency after President Trump took office. Was there a moment in Donald Trumps ascendency when you said i need to tell this story. It began when he was running for president. President trump id like to punch him in the face, ill tell you. About the old days when they beat the crap out of them. President trump you know what they used to do to guys like that when they were in a place like this . Theyd be carried out in a stretcher. The police advanced into the crowds, clubbing those who resisted. Reporter one of those protestors, rennie davis, needed a stretcher after taking a billy club to the head. I was being clubbed by the police, and the police were literally screaming. Reporter and how bad was your head injury . I had to go to the hospital, and ill tell the story now that i never shared before publicly. I went to the hospital to get 13 stitches, and the police realized that i was in the hospital because they knew i had been clubbed, and so they started a search of the hospital room by room by room. And mostly the nurses they could end their career by what they did. They put me on a trolley cart and covered me with a sheet and moved me from room to room. Reporter to hide you from the police . To hide from the police, yeah. Reporter for protestors and the police and who were ordered to stop them, it was a dangerous game. But the activists all knew what they were in for, says former defendant lee winner. Did you know you were risking prison time . It was not only a possibility, but a probability. But are we going to not do it just because of that . Not a chance. We heard testimony that your plans for the convention were designed specifically to draw the police into a confrontation. If i knew it would have been the first wish that came true, i would have acted a light higher. Everything pointed to one man. I think he was the smartest guy in the room. He developed this whole style of protesting that was designed to illicit as much Media Attention as possible. And even during the riots in chicago, he always had his mind on where the cameras were. We cant fight it in the court because the a putting us on trial, see. Reporter in fact, hoffman and jerry reuben became celebrities in their own right, as observed by our own bob schieffer. It was raining and cold, not a good night out for man and beast. So it was only natural that those masters of media manipulation, Abbey Hoffman and jerry reuben, to choose this night to hold a conference. The only people who can stop this trial are the people in the streets. I was thrown in to make the group look scarier. Reporter but the trial was a very different experience for the lone black defendant, bobby seal. He clashed with the judge. Bobby seal was gagged and chained for refusing to obey the judge. Handcuffs were clamped on to both wrists, and a white linen cloth was knotted behind his neck. He would try to pull his hands up, and he would be clubbed. In front of the jury . D youre in contempt of the american people. Reporter eventually bobby seals case was declared a the chicago 8 became the chicago 7. Five were convicted of some charges, but all were overturned on appeal. Their trial is history. But it seems their fight is still very much alive. [yelling] we didnt need it to get more relevant, but it did. And in kenosha and kentucky and washington, when you see, once again, peaceful protestors being met with tear gas, nightsticks, youve got to care a lot about this country to go out in the street and face that kind of danger. Youve got to care a lot about america. Antiwar demonstrators gathered in grant park today. Reporter then, as now, the demonstrators risk their safety and their freedom to make themselves heard. Surrounded by grim, silent soldiers, the demonstrators decided to sing. Reporter and according to former chicago 7 defendant, lee winner, it was all worth it. How many times it was crazy, for sure. It was hard, it was brutal, it was dangerous. It was an effort by the government toite ou efrts and ourfsri can b better. And so we had to fight back. And in that fighting back, it was a badge of honor. It is blowing in the wind pauley we all could use something sweet, and Martha Stewart has just the recipe. Well, it is autumn, the last day of summer has passed, but the garden doesnt stop giving. I love preserving. And i am now in the process of making jams and jellies from all of the fruits that i have harvested all summer long. All of these jams and jellies i made yesterday. A lot of these will be gifts for my friends, and they will love them. The difference between a jam and a jelly . Well, jam has all of the full fruit in it, and jelly is the juice of the fruit, strained. Now, i want to show you how to make a really delicious blueberry. Four and a half pounds of beautiful blueberries, and then measure out the sugar io much sugar, but what are you using on your crescent . A tablespoon or two of your homemade jam . And dont forget the lemon juice. This goes on to the stove and you cook it until all of the sugar is dissolved. Now, all of the sugar is melted, you put this fruit and syrup, because the blueberries have really cooked down, into a glass bowl. And you cover it with a piece of parchment paper and refrigerate overnight. They can stay in the refrigerator for, oh, two, three days before you bring it back to a boil. Look how beautiful that is . To fill our jars, you must have a funnel, like this, and then you just scoop into the jar. And i didnt mention the square ladle. This is the ingenius ladle. And you want to make sure you dont drip on white marble counters. This berry juice is pretty indelible, so be careful. I put the ring on, pull down with my finger, and screw on. There. Lockdown and seal it. It is sort of a selfsealing method. So no more parafin wax on top. And all of this jam and jellymaking really just brings me to how i came up with the flavors for my new product line of wellness c. B. D. Products. Really, this blueberry jam, which we just may see, thats a nice gel tastes just like the Huckleberry Gummies we all need to be calm these days, dont we . Lets see how they taste with the homemade jam on it. And this, to me, is sunday morning. It reminds me of paris. Hmmm absolutely perfect. Is that a good idea . On wednesday vicepresident pence and joe bidens running mate Kamala Harris are still set to debate in salt lake city. She arrived friday as a precaution. I want to thank the people of utah for being so welcoming. Reporter this thursday pence, biden, and harris are set to hold Campaign Events in arizona. But absent from the campaign trail, at least in person, will be President Trump. My wife jill and i prayed they will make a quick and full recovery. Reporter biden has been wishing the ailing president well, adding the news sa reminder that we, as a nation, need to do better with this pandemic. Reporter the business of washington is also set to continue. Mitch mcconnell said saturday that the full senate wont meet in person for the next two weeks, but the Judiciary Committee will in order to begin confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. With two members of that panel, mike lee of ullyett and tom tillis of carolina having tested positive for covid19, it is unknown how they will participate. The pandemic plunged the campaign into chaos back in march, when the first Public Events were canceled. Ever since President Trump and opponent biden have been a study in contrast. Reporter Walter Cronkite may not actually have been the most trusted man in america, but he was trusted, as were his counterparts on abc and nbc. If they said kennedy was the new president , well, that was the way it was. As we go through the night and towards the dawn, counting the votes, in this, one of the closest president ial elections in many, many years. Reporter west virginians were democrats in those days. He has done a lot for us in the last four years,i fee. Reporteow drewh you heard the news about the president and the first lady having covid . I was startled when i heard it. And my first thought really is how the democrats is gonna make fun of trump, which they already have, msnbc and cnn. They were already saying things that, you know, trump should have already known this and everything. And thyre going to be making fun over the next few weeks, up until the election. I got a news flash on my phone the same time it was released in public. Reporter he doesnt get much of his news from television anymore. You remember when, back in the older days, when newscasters presented the news in an unbias way. They threw it out there and let people think what they want to think about it. We do not need that in reporter so if on of your friends said, elizabeth, i dont know, i just cant handle trump anymore, im going to vote for biden, youd just pray for them . You know what i would tell them . If he satisfies god if god chose him, we need to shut our mouth. Thats the way i feel. Reporter so you think god chose trump to serve two terms . Yes, i do. I know people whoave worn masks and stayed home, and they still ended up sick. Reporter do you listen to the radio . No. Reporter do you read a newspaper . No. Reporter where did you hear about the president having covid . I think it was on facebook or social media. Reporter for some time now and by the millions, people have been turning to social media platforms. The story of the 2020 election on social media is really one of domestic palarg paisan outlets, getting enoou mbonocial media. Theyre ing it in a environmwhs apretse aitude towards truth, in which this goal is just to engage people, to keep them clicking and scrolling. Reporter kevin ruse writes a column on technology for the New York Times. You have these enormous numbers for these hyperpartisan news sources that are basically disconnected from the larger mainstream media. But i think what a lot of them have in common is theyre very skilled at provoking outrage. They is a saying that what is enraging is engaging. Trump, of course, eventually got coronavirus. Reporter where once we assembled facts in order to change opinions, and now the entire Silicon Valley is working against donald trump and republicans. Reporter and youre telling me that they have more people coming to them than collectively come to abc news, nobody nbc news, cbs news, washington post. Spell that out for me, where are they going . There is a rightwing commentator named ben shapiro. If trump had just said the right things, then he wouldnt have gotten covid. It is very popular among conservatives. And in the last 30 days on his facebook page, he has gotten 51. 4 million interactions. And that is more than fivew time , nbc and cbs combined. Reporter youre kind of leaving me speechless here. The president is ill, and a lot of the people he has been with over the last few daysni are quite ill, and yet youre telling me that more people are getting their information from these outlets than they are from what weve traditionally looked upon as reliable news sources . Yeah, i would say thats true. And its part of why there is so much misinformation about things like the coronavirus. I dont think thats all social medias fault. What i do think social media has done is radically amplify those things because they are engaging and because they keep peoples attention. Justg aask, it works, is a useful message, even a lifesaving one, but its not a very interesting one. Reporter whereas. Reporter when President Trump announced early friday that he and the first lady tested positive for covid19, it was just one in a series of headspinning shocks in an already tumultuous campaign. The president does have mild symptoms. The doctors continue to monitor both his health and the health of the first lady. Reporter this past tuesday. A ferocious debate left many viewers stunned. No. Swer to the quest is no. President tru t last 25 years . Because you are a president screwing things up. It is hard to get any word in with this clown. Reporter before that, a breathtaking report in the New York Times about President Trumps tax returns. This president appears to have over 400 million in debt to whom . Reporter that came on the heels of the passing of Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg and the lightening quick nomination of conservative judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace her. There is a name for unexpected events that occur late in president ial compaigns and have the potential to change the course of the election. Theyre called october surprises. This year they got an early start. All but the president s positive covid test happened in september. Margaret carlson, who has covered many president ial compaigns for Time Magazine says some october surprises are carefully orchestrated, bt others come out of the blue. Is it a manmade or womanmade surprise . Orst an event beyond anyones capacity to control . A hurricane, the Financial Markets collapsing in 2008. Or is it something in an ongoing scandal. Reporter the term october surprise first appeared in our political lexicon in 1980, when republican Ronald Reagan was running against democratic president jimmy carter. In tehran, the American Embassy is in the hands of hundn students. Reporter 52 americans were being held hostage in iran during an Election Year and there was no end in sight. It must be made clear that the failure to release the hostages will volve an increasingly heavy cost to iran and its interests. Reporter in 1980, jimmy carter and this staff really believed if they should go progress in freeing the hostages, that would be eno lay sabatirector of the university of Virginia Center for politics. What they didnt count on was that the promises from the iranians completely collapsed on the sunday before the tuesday election. So basically americans were told right before they went to the polls that it was either hopeless or they better try somebody new who would try new things to get the hostages back. Reporter so that was an october surprise that jimmy carter thought it was going to help him, but it reversed itself . It helped reagan instead. Reporter 1980 might have been when the term october surprise was coined, but sabatos says the first president to benefit from the turn of events was abraham lincoln. Even lincoln had not an october surprise, but a september surprise when sherman took atlanta. It probably saved lincolns second term. He, himself, thought he was going to lose, andin nort f cosethe light at the end of the tunnel. Reporter that light was a resounding lincoln victory. I, donald trump, do solemnly swear reporter while it is rare that an october surprise actually changes the outcome of a of an election, Devlin Barrett thinks it happened four years ago. I think jim comey, without intending to, changed the outcome of the election. Reporter barrett is an author of a just released book, in which he contends that theowakak surprprise came from a letter from james comey. The letter announced a new f. B. I. Investigation into emails found on a laptop belonging to comin kuma abadin er, whos husband, well be right bacweiner,i was under n for sex crimes. This fit right into one of his main messages against her. That is absolutely right. It absolutely fit into the republican critique and attack on Hillary Clinton. But the other part of it, too, is it came from a very credible place. Reporter if f. B. I. Director comey had not sent this letter to capitol hill, you believe Hillary Clinton would be president today . I do, and, more importantly, the people who study the data do. They say it is the single most measurable impact on the outcome. Last night i congratulated donald trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country. Reporter barrett admits we can never know with absolute certainty that it did change the election results, but we tobesurprise didot201 President Trump you can do anything. Reporter the notorious access Hollywood Tape of donald trump bragging in 2005 about sexually accosting women did not block his path to victory. Larry sabato says it is unlikely an october surprise this year will change the results of the election. I dont think october surprises are going to work as well this year because were so p polarized. Everybody is in their own tribe, democratic or republican, and theyre not going to move. Reporter maybe so, but with the way things are going, more october, and even november, surprises seem likely in a campaign that makes the term political roller coaster sound quaint. Pauley the president s Health Crisis throws the final months of this volatile Political Campaign into either further uncertainty. Which brings us to senior political analyst John Dickerson. This week, when the Vice President ial candidates debate, they will be five feet further apart than originally planned, in a campaign taking place a world apart from the one inhibited by the president ial candidates just the week before. Vicepresident pence was at the same event where the president might have been infected, but so far it appears he was out of the loop. Still, Kamala Harris has asked for the extra distance just to be safe. What it means to be safe and what accommodations are necessary during the pandemic will be a key debate topic. The matter of National Importance on which the compaigns disagree has also distinguished the way they carry out their compaigns. President trump mocked joe bidens maskwearing and precautions. He repeatedly ignored the guidance of his own Health Officials. The debate over these issues is no longer abstract and makes the inevitable abstract questions about whether the Vice President ial candidates can step into the job if required a little too on the nose.
