One of the drivers of that wealth gap is red lining. The practice of mortgage lenders denying loans to people based on their race or where they live. With those areas marked with red lines on maps. Although the practice was outlawed in 1968, the effects are still being felt today. Something entrepreneurs and activists are trying to reverse. What was auburn avenue . Well it was everything. Reporter this councilman represents this district, half of which is enjoying the bloom of reinvestment, the other still blighted. Well see how they cooked uppa solution to survive this pandemic year. That is ahead. But first the damage from hurricane delta. Powerful winds and rain are battling
Coastal Louisiana and parts of texas after delta becamed tenth named storm to hit the main land this year. It came ashore near the town of creole, louisiana, 15 miles from where hurricane laura struck six weeks ago thmt time streets are filled with water. High winds took down power lines leaving half a
Million People with no power. The winds even blew a big truck on its side. Delta was downgraded to a
Tropical Storm overnight as it moves inland with winds of about 45
Miles Per Hour but lifethreatening storm surge is just one of the lingering concerns. Maria villarreal is in the lake charles area with the latest. Good morning. Reporter good morning, jeff. This is the third storm that ive covered this
Hurricane Season and for some of the warriors, this is their fourth and fifth. What make this is one different oh, no. We lost her. We lost her. Some high winds in louisiana. So were going to jeff who is tracking what is left of delta right now. What is next from the hurricane and beyond this. So the good news is it is weakening. That is great. But thankfully, because it is a relentless assault. Left and right hooks and it just keeps coming. But things are quieting down and that is good news. The storm made landfall as a cat two. It is moving northward and weakening but could produce isolated tornados and wind gusts from 55 to 65
Miles Per Hour but sustained winds down to 40
Miles Per Hour and moving to the northeast around 16
Miles Per Hour. Despite the fast movement, weve seen a lot of heavy rain. As much as 15 to 20 inches of rain. But the most astounding thing about this storm is it made landfall just 12 miles away from where laura made landfall just six weeks ago. The system today will spread a lot of heavy rain across the northern part of the southeast into the
Tennessee River valley and up the ohio river valley as well. Well see gusts to 25 to 30
Miles Per Hour and the possibility of isolated tornados and some left over rain in parts of pennsylvania all the day down into the carolinas. And by the way, it has been a busy season. Weve seen ten landfalls around the
United States. And so far that is a record and were on track to be one of the most active seasons on record in the
United States. Jeff, thanks very much on the subject of that busy season. Were going back to mireya villareal. Weve been in three hurricanes just this season. Reporter that is exactly right, jeff. I was saying ive been in three. The crew has been in four and five. The difference between this one and other ones, yes, there was heavy rain and strong wind gusts overnight, 100
Miles Per Hour in some areas. But hurricane delta as jeff mentioned, blew through fairly quickly. The debris piles are a by product of hurricane laura that came through six weeks ago. Weve seen debris scattered on the roadways and downed power lines. Some of the tarps came off of rooftops. We see hanging electrical wires and major flooding in the area. This morning a lot of people will wake up and will not have electricity. This is the way it is for the next few days if not weeks. We have talked to several electrical crews that are in this area. They will start repairs this morning. But one guy told me, they have been on the road just as much as we have. One person said he hasnt seen his family in over eight weeks. It has been a very busy season to say the least. And that brings me kind of to the biggest toll that this community has taken and it is something that you physically cannot see, it is not tangible. It is the heart and soul of this community badly damaged after two major storms came through. And crews spent weeks trying to pick all of this up and now they have to start all over again. Michelle. It is dana and ill take it. And it is a fighting spirit that weve seen so often. Thank you. We appreciate the work from you and the crew as well to bring us these stories. When you see these big females like that, that have scars from decades over their lives and multiple mating cycles you could see the story of their life unfolding across all of the blotches and healed wounds on their body and it really hits you differently than you would think it was. Reporter nukumi is one of the largest great white sharks anyone has ever seen. 50 years old, 3500 pounds. The crowning achievement of a month long trip off noera scotia for the team at osearch. After running from storms for 21 days in the middle of this atlantic
Hurricane Season, they were able to sample and release a total of eight white sharks on this latest trip, including nukumi, socalled queen of the ocean. What are you hoping she tells you in the years to come. She has a great opportunity of showing us where the
Atlantic Canada wight shark gives birth. Reporter that is the ultimate goal. Something never witnessed. Along with so much else about white sharks. If they thrive, the system thrives. If we understand their lives we could help them thrive. If we lose our white sharks, the seals wipe out our fish stocks and the white shark is the balance keeper and the path to abundance goes through them. Reporter their satellite tags which allow tracking of the sharks for years are a key to unlocking it all. Tagging involves first hooking the shark with a smaller boat. Then gliding it into a large lift. Part of an old crabbing vessel as we first saw in the waters off cape cod eight years ago. Now that the shark is on the lift, this is when the scientists do their work. They try to keep the sharks out of the water for less than 15 minutes. During which theyre sustained by a rush of sea water. While blood samples are taken. Four minutes reporter and the tag is putting into the dorsal fin which they say doesnt cause pain because no blood or nerves connect to the fin. From the first time we were on the ship with you in 2012, what have we learned. We knew almost nothing about what the white sharks were doing other than some of them were showing up in the cape cod in the late summer and fall. We started to put the tags out there and the first thing we did was to find the full range of the north
Atlantic White shark and theyre moving from
Atlantic Canada and new finland and into the gulf of mexico, as far west as the mississippi river. Your methods have been criticized as being too invasive. Whatty do you stick with them. Because that is not what the indicators say. When you look at the ultrasound in the cradle, it doesnt indicate that. So i think that comes from the fact that what were doing is orders of magnitude greater than anything that has been done in the white shark space there history. Were studying the biology of the white shark, getting a complete picture of that as well as the ecology of the wight shark at the statement time by 21

United States. Are they out there right now. Theyre out there. Reporter we talked on the coast of long island, another place seeing an increasing number of white sharks in recent years. Theyre around you everywhere you go on the water. Weve been swimming with them our whole lives. The one thing that changed since the beginning of our work is that we know that. Looking good, old girl. Reporter finding out exactly where they live and move is not only a key to keeping people safe, it is critical for conservation efforts. Not just here, but across the planet. Sharks are in much better shape than they were a couple of decades ago. Is the reason for concern moving forward beyond this . Well sharks are in much better state than they were decades ago in the
United States of america. But when you leave the
United States, and they lack management and there is no enforcement, it is still a super big challenge which then affects the global ecosystem of the ocean in very negative ways. If the
United States is in such good shape as you say and other places are not, where to next for you . Where do you think the worst situation is. Were looking at several places but one of the places that we hope that we do make a difference is in the mediterranean. It is been harvested and people around it since the beginning trying to survive and eat so it is taken the brunt of our growth as humans. How do you turn that back around. Try to get the white sharks moving in the right direction, creating awareness and hope that that impacts the fish stocks, the
Marine Mammal stocks and slowly your talking about we turned it around in the
United States in 20 years. I think there youre looking at a 100 year vision. Wow, 100 year vision. Because things are so bad in the mediterranean whether n it come sharks right now. It is awe inspiring to stand next to a shark on the lift and glide your hand. Rather there than in the water. You just couldnt resist. We spent time with jeanne a few years back and i want able to see nukumi in person. But now we could track her for the next five years and theyre planning to go to the mediterranean and then also spend some time maybe off the carolinas next summer to try to find out more about where they breed and where they give birth. It is great work and every time we do a story like this, it is the reminder, it is all interconnected and that is the thing that people have to keep in mind. Top of the food chain. That goes away,

Reporter National geography and others bring exposure access and education to amateur photographers. Like some of these young women who traveled from louisiana to show case their photography for an enthusiastic new york audience. So this is a new experience for you. Yes. Especially working with the cameras and having people travel out to new orleans to keep us. What did you learn in this experience . I learned that there is something that we take for granted, as simple as water, that it has a lot of symbolism. I know new orleans floods a lot and using photography, it actually helped me with my anxiety because i was getting nervous about katrina and even talking about it im nervous. So this made you face your fear. Reporter but of course all of that was before covid19 made a major festival hard to picture. Was there a moment where you said, nothing is going to happen this year. Were never say never kind of people. Looking around, going we should be doing more of these exhibitions outside. And again this is nothing new for us. Weve been doing this for onlni years. We had to convince everybody else that this was a good idea. Reporter even a pandemic couldnt stop photoville from returning with more distance and locations throughout new york city. We have 60 exhibitions, hundreds of photographers and over a hundred and so it takes a village to make this worm. How did it feel from the germ of this idea to be standing surrounded by these visual stories that youve helped cure ate in times square. We thought it was a dream and we have a mentality and i think everyone should feel this way, it never hurts to ask. We arent really flashy, we dont have any money. Really great project for you and
Alice Williams went all over new york city and interviewed recent graduates. And as we all work our own way through the once unmanageable changes in our daily lives, she said that photography will tell lasting stories about this experience as well. It is really important for us, though, to be supporting independent photo journalists and visual storytellers to try and raise more money to be able to pay them, to give them a platform. And hard times make for great art. When i think of the young women from new orleans, it is such a big part of photoville to have artists who were disenfranchised or marginalized be able to come to new york and meet other creative people and youve lost that element to it. What does that make you feel for this year . That is the one thing that ve missed. That was the whole point of photoville. Community coming together in our village. So im really hoping that in the future well get back to that. Whether it is with containers or just outdoors. It is really about storytellers. And being able to tell their own story. This morning on the dish, a passion for pasta and all of the food of his native italy, frank de pasquale is one of the most successful restauranteurs in the boston north end, the little italy. Along with seven dining venues he has dozens of other ventures including a pasta shop and a bakery and even a hotel and a magazine. Heidntrt o in thldonound f simple sandwich. A this is our love. This is our passion. This is what we live for. It is just a love of what we do. Reporter with a feast before him, boston restauranteur frank de pasquale speaks from the heart. I wake up, i cant wait to see a new dish that the chef is making. I cant wait to see the smile on the customers face as theyre sipping the sign or eating their food and saying something nice on the way out. Reporter this dish includes zucchini pasta with parmesan and margarita pizza with hand crushed tomatoes, and even a signature espresso martini. But de pasquale set his sights on the simple sandwich that he said started it all. Home made prishuto and tomatoes, extra
Virgin Olive Oil as my first restaurant is named under that particular sandwich and we turned it into a which happened in 1987 which is about 34 years ago. A long time ago. And here were today with seven different restaurants. Reporter de pasquales father was first to dream of building a food business here in the
United States. Bringing his family to boston from italy. The citys north end quickly became home. This is honestly the great neighborhood probably in the country. Why . Because people make places. Places dont make people. And outside of every door youll see either a owner or a manager greeting you, loving you, hugging you. My father was here all of the time making sure that naples won the soccer match of the week and we had espressos here and he would buy me a little teroni and confetti and i was always buy his side from when i was 4 years old to the day he passed away. Just 15 at the time of his fathers death, that is when he became the man of the family. After college he launched his first business. A shoe store. I didnt like the fact that i had to sit there all day long and size peoples feet. And so i said, you know something, my real passion is food so let me get started with food. Reporter that is when the first north end restaurant came to be. This started off as a simple sandwich shop. Reporter de pasquale traces his culinary back to italy. They would look at the beautiful girls at the beach but i spend my time in kitchens and restaurants because that was my passion. To watch the pizza man, the way he slapped the pizza and turn it into the oven and crushed the tomatoes by hand. Zucchini pasta, mothers make it was a passion and love and everything that i always wanted to be. It is those italy tradigs that he brought to each venture like home made buffalo mozzarella and fresh baked bread. Bu it is more than just the food. I always wanted to be the best and i always say in all of my meetings, people dont remember who comes in second. So my strive was to be the best restaurant i could be and i hired the right people to do the right job. You brought chefs over from italy. I brought dhchefs from italy and a lot of them ended up staying here and marrying here and never leaving again. And theyre still part of my team. Reporter a team that has a huge footprint in that same north end de pasquale first wandered in as a child and way not m wastry morning at my coffee shop and we have our espresso and talk about last night and talk about our food. Like i said before, this is the greatest community in the country. We help each other with menus, we help each other with buying if someone runs out of a product they could come to my restaurant or i go to their restaurant. That seems to rare to me. Because you are competitors an youre right next door that you would help each other in that way. But competitors bring up our game. So we all become a little bit better. Reporter that

And it took a pandemic to get us there. But you have it now. But we have it now. Reporter the unofficial mayor of the another end, de pasquale would be the one to find the positive spin and the one that even in tough times is trying to look ahead. His next project a joint venture in the encore casino hotel. Were going to have a pizzeria. How old are you . I do i have to say . 68 going on 55. Do you ever see not working at this pace . I think that the espresso martinis and the espressos that i have every single day which is usually about five or six of them, it keeps me going and i think im going to hit that 100 some day. Could we see cheers to that. And as we toast, de pasquale cant help but turn to the past and reflecting upon all of his success. If you could have this meal with anyone past or present who would it be . Oh, wow. Wow i think it would be with my father. I think my father joseph, i mean he had the vision to come to america and give us this opportunity. And im not going to waste it. Reporter you taste that food and there is love in that food. I blew it. I was reminded by brian apple gate, express ore martinis would be so easy to bring to you. Did. Ing them. Post show. And some buffalo mozzarella, too. It is all good. It is good.
