Hocum, lisa. Thank you. Lets just jump right in and ask you, what is gbs . Jv as, we believe in the power of work to transform lives. We are a nonprofit, non sectarian were First Organization that serves the whole bay area community. Our mission is to create access to opportunity for those that have left behind. It has a beautiful vision statement. I want to give a couple of examples about how does that actually find it to the ground . Of course. We work closely with employers in sectors that are showing very strong growth, particularly sectors that have a large percentage of what we call jobs one of the things that has happened since the Great Recession has been a hollowing out of the metal of the labor market. What that means is that the growth that has been happening has been happening in the highestpaid, highest skilled jobs. Unfortunately, also in the lowest skilled, lowest paid jobs with a shrinking pool in the middle. Onve deecoti eloyer sectors that doill ofmiddle sche j anbuil out Career Pathways, Training Programs in partnership with those employers and those sectors. I will tell you a little bit more about what exactly that looks like. That looks like connecting people with skill building training and soft skills or, skilled. Followed by a paid Work Experience in partnership with an employer, often paid by the employer. And then a direct next to implement it. Every. Tell us how gbs understands how the communities and then makes it partnerships and contributes to e work life of the community at large. Thats a great question and a really big question. A couple of things i would like to draw out about that are, first of all, that the bay area economy, in terms of the inequality of describing and the hollowing out of the middle, the bay area economy is probably the most you can is in the country. In that sense, it makes the work that were doing here a really great testing programs. We believe it can work here and it should work pretty much everywhere. Some other key factors to think about and thinking about the a bay area economy are looking at sectors that still offer High Percentage of middle school, miage jobs some exales of another piece of the why those Industries Still offer so many middle wage is the most part those jobs can be off shored or insured. They have to be done by people who are here. Healthcare and Public Sector both also have the advantage of being fairly recession proof. That means those are Good Investments for us in terms of developing programming and partnerships in building sustainability. Used an interesting word. I think most people are familiar with offshore, which means a job that leaves the country. What is in short . In short is a dynamic that we think about and in a city like San Francisco, really the broader bay area, and we work across multiple counties across the broader bay area, Many Companies are in response to the increasing cost of living and also the increase in cost in the course of doing business, moving jobs that can be moved to lowercost areas of the country. I see. So, a job might leave the bay area or another part of california, another state. Thats exactly right. Interesting. We will take a quick break and come back in a moment on mosaic. Good morning welcome to my say. Im rabbi eric weiss. We are in the middle of a wonderful conversation with the folks at jv as a arbey area economy and the work and contribute to the common good. We would like to welcome back isa countrymen, who is a chief strategic officer at jv as. Welcome to the director of Healthcare Programs. Welcome. Becca, lets ask you what are the Healthcare Programs at jvc . We have a diverse portfolio of Healthcare Programs at jvc. We serve both people who are already licensed or certified in the field and people that dont really have any healthcare experience, but want to get a foot in the door. We sa wide range of occupations. We work with medical assistance, dental assistants, lpns, are ins, and medical administrative assistance. Those are occupations that we have really seen in high demand in the bay area. And also have good entrylevel wages. Our refresher programs are really designed for people that already have a certificate, are already licensed, but maybe people have taken a time off or got a license or certificate and werent able to find work in that field. We have targeted shortterm trainings for those folks to really refresh their Clinical Skills and get that confidence back up but also to practice all the soft skill we know employers want. And then they go into a Work Based Learning experience where they are practicing skills again and supporting them in finding a job afterward. Our other Training Programs that are more for folks that arent certified or trained already in our dental assistant and medical assistant programs. And our medical Administrative AssistantTraining Program as well. S thro inicalraining ogra. Sometimes a partnership with a local accredited Training Provider like San Francisco state. We are supplementing that training with soft skills targeted toward the employer. And that our Work Based Learning experience, practicing skills, coaching and support, Wraparound Services during that time and support with the job search at the end. Lisa was talking about jvc commitment to identify where a gap is in filling that gap , particularly in the healthcare sector within the context of middle wage jobs and middle level types of bobs, as you described, the dental assistant, cna, and that sort of thing. For anybody out there who wants a job at a certain point when the rubber hits the road its getting thb. The point which bout d lace d is committing to a job an geg a ck how d that structureactually work at jvc . Thats a really good question. We really integrate that training and support throughout our programs. It really starts before the program even starts. We are talking with employers about what the somebody need to get into a job . Both the actual hard skills. Do they need to be able to draw blood . Room a patient . All the way down to what should they see in an interview . What kind of attitude should they come in with . What do they need to say to really land that job . We integrate that training throughout our programs and people are receiving it right alongside the harder skills. And then we also bring employers into the process at every step of the way. Many of our programs are targeted at a specific employer. That employer is helping us select participants for the program. They inform the Selection Process and let us know the kinds of folks they are looking for pick who they are looking for and the type of skills they are looking for. People are already well set up, because the employer has been brought into this group of people. Throughout the training we are providing things like networking, training, sitting down and actually writing a resume, how to apply online. Wants a program and as many of our pages was actually already have offers from employers, because they have really shown what they can do on the job. A hiring manager can see they are trained in this specific setting. And that they have already shown what they can do on the job. For those that are still looking for work they have access to oneonone jobsearch support from one of our staff. Group workshops. And a whole slew of services around how to practice those skills and keep themselves current with volunteer opportunities, practicing interviews with our volunteers. Everything they need in order to land at that job once they land the job where Touching Base with folks to make sure they can be successfulthey are in our segment. I know that jvc works so intensely across the spectrum of work. Work is so complex from a person that needs a job to a skill set to employee, employer who will hire and then the success of working. I wonder if you can talk a little bit about in a concrete way who are the employers that jvc works with you, maybe mention a program or two. Absolutely. We work with a lot of employers in the bay area. Some of our bigger name ers arnte, Pacific Medical foundation, ucsf. Those are some of our longstanding partners in the large hospital systems. We also work with private practices in Small Community clinics in the bay area, which are really successful. We want to make sure that our participants have a choice in where to work. And they choose the environment and workplace that is right for them. We try to have a real variety of employer partnerships. Believe it or not, we are going to take a quick break and come back to this wonderful conversation with jvc in just a moment. Good morning and welcome back to mosaic. We are in the middle of a wonderful conversation with jvc. We would like to introduce you to lisa countrymen, the chief strategic officer and introduce you to the medical Group Administrator for Kaiser PermanenteSan Francisco medical center. Welcome back. Im happy to be here. Lets just jump in. Can you talk a little bit about the partnership that Kaiser Permanente has with jvc . Absolutely. We have been working together now for probably 2. 5 years it started out of a need that lisa trce. What we found was we wo many medical assistance who would take a job in San Francisco, but after six months or a year they would transfer to a location that was closer to their home. So, that caused churn. Churn results in people not being as effective at their job. Its also expensive, because youre constantly training people. I met abby snake, who is the chief executive officer for jvc , at a function and we started talking. She told me the refresher program. What i like about it was we were able to help develop the curriculum. They worked with us and we could put pieces of it that are particular to Kaiser Permanente in the curriculum, which we really appreciate it. Also, they were going to recruit around the San Francisco and in the city of San Francisco, in particular. The experiment was that if we could get people who lived nearby would we be able to reduce that churn . Develop the community in some ways by providing jobs. When we provide jobs there is also healthcare and other things that we can do by investing in the community. It was really a winwin. We have been very happy. We are on our fourth cohort of medical assistance. It is working really well. They are very well trained. They not only have the Clinical Skills, they know the soft skills of Customer Service and we teach them about our computer systems. It is working very, very well. Kaiser permanente, i think a lot of people know, has its origins in Worker Health and community health. I know that value has stuck with kaiser certainly he. Ier you looked at what you call the churn and what lisa talked about early about in shoring do you find that if you tend to hire people who are in the community that the job keeps them anchored to the community . Is that part of the vision of creating stability in the workforce in healthcare sector . Absolutely. So far we have been, you know, it has only been a couple of years, but we have been tracking our numbers and there is definitely lower churn people are staying. I also have to say that some of these well trained sist. We a talk t abouhow people come the system . If they come into a program thats directly linked to a job that may or may not land at kaiser or someplace else how you educate people to the expectations and what they are really being trained to do and really what the job expectation might be . Of course. We do very targeted outreach for all of our Career Pathways programs. Partnership with kaiser, of course, it helps immensely in our outreach. Kaiser is such an attractive employer. People really want to work with kaiser. Kaiser has a reputation of being a great place to work, a great employer, really stable. I think that draws a lot of people. We get sometimes 200 or 300 applications to be in a court, a training cohort of 20. Theres a lot of interest people understand. We set expectations from the beginning that what they are stepping into is a very robust Training Program that includes classroom training, paid Work Experience, but it is not a guarantee of employment at kaiser. They understand they have the opportunity to prove themselves in that moment and if they dont get an opportunity at kaiser immediately after their externsh a opportunities as well with our other fantastic employer partners. If somebody is interested in the healthcare sector programs how do they actually make themselves available to jvc . They could go to our website and get connected to the Healthcare Programs through their. They could submit an intake form. For kaiser it so, what are some of the positions kaiser is actually looking for . Right now we are particularly focused on medical assistance. We are increasing the number of medical assistance we have been hiring over the last couple of years. They help the physician in providing great care. That is the one we are working with jvc on. Certainly, we have other positions as lpn, are in, other areas as well as administration. Thank you so much. Believe it or not, we are going to take another quick break and come back in just a moment. Good morning and welcome back to mosaic. Im rabbi eric weiss. We are in wonder wonderful conversation about work with lisa countrymen, who is the chief strategic officer at jvc. We are joined by area, a medical assistant who went through the jvc medical program. Lisa, i know there are different ways that jvc lets the Community Know what they are doing. I was wondering if you could talk about more how jvc lets the public know about the work. Opportunities like this are a way to do that. Are the given is tricky business, our annual luncheon. That is our big fundraising event for the year. And its really a celebration of the people who have benefited from our programs and an opportunity also to showcase our fantastic employer partnerships. Area is going to be honored as one of our employees of the year this year as strictly business. Congratulations. What brought you to jvc . Waggling to jobs. I had been away frmy jor a couple of ar en i tried to reapply for jobs it was really hard for me to find jobs. As soon as the employers would see she is three years off of a job they wont call me. They said we went in another direction, thank you for your application. They wouldnt call me. I was in this program that helps women who are single moms. They told me about jvc. I liked the opportunity that they were giving me to do the externship, which was one of the big catching parts of it. Also, they gave me the opportunity to refresh my skills. I was a medical assistant, but this was giving me time to prep myself before i actually went to the job. It became more than that. It became or than just a Refreshment Program for a ng me how do an ped me fm interview to how to dress up, to actually do the interview. They gave me the opportunity to do the externship at kaiser and i got hired at kaiser. Thats wonderful. What is a medical assistant . A medical assistant is a person who helps the doctor in the back office. Like with the entrance, prepping for procedures, patients. Most of the people that goes to the hospital hasthey register t and get them and put them in the room, so the doctor can see them. That is what our job is. The medical assistant place a really Important Role in influencing and setting the tone for the whole Patient Experience that is part of the reasonthployer net are so concerned about having medical assistants have a really, really deep grounding and patient communication and all of those soft skills. They represent and stand in for the organization. It reminds me that healthcare , we all know, is so complex. The complexity can also be the way in which a patient arrives to a doctors office. When theyre waiting in the waiting room and their name is called and they show up into the room people typically are nervous. They dont know what to do. Theyre not there because they are well. They are there because they have a concern. Im just wondering, from your experience in your years as a medical assistant how do you understand the ways in which people need to calm down . Are there certain ways in which people need to understand how to calm down, so that they are more able to listen to the doctor . What are the things you have observed about how people need to get to a place of being calm once they are inside the office . I dont know if calm would be faring up. They will not be home. Jvc has taught me that if you calm yourself, if you present yourself in a calm manner they will immediately calm down. Most of the patients are not there, are not in the hospital because they want to be in the hospital, but something is going on. Something brought them there. They have to take time out of their job and they have to take time off, all of this. Some of them are in pain i remember one of my coaches on jvc taught me, okay, of all of the things we have to stop. Im sorry. In a sense can you say it . Just brief. Like for you calmly. The patient is going to respond to you calmly. Thats a wonderful way to end our conversation, just breathe. Stay centered. Thank you so much for being with us here on mosaic. Have a wonderful day. R
