Its another night of high fire danger, but there is good news in the forecast, gradually cooler temperatures heading through the weekend, tracking the current fire weather conditions coming up. Im ken bastida. Lets get right to that breaking news in San Francisco. At least five people were shot in two separate incidents in the span of about a half hour. This is our first look at one of the crime scenes around 8 30 tonight four people found shot on scherwin street in sunnyvale. One of the victims died. A man was shot and killed on Hunters Point road, that victim between 45 and 50, no word on suspects or a motive in either shooting. More breaking news, were just learning that a 14year old and a 16yearold started the fouralarm fire near the South San Francisco sign today. Police say a neighbor spotted them leaving the area and when officers found them, they confessed. Well have more on the challenging conditions firefighters had to deal with in a moment. But first chief meteorologist paul heggen has a red flag warning now extending into the weekend, paul . Yeah. Tonights fire weather conditions arent going to be quite as dire as the conditions the past couple of nights, but the low humidity levels continue to be a problem running in the 15 to 25 range now and thats going to be the case into early tomorrow morning. Once the sun comes up and temperatures start to heat up even more, these numbers will go down to around 10 by tomorrow afternoon, but the fire danger should be lower at that point in terms of the rapid spread of fires that prompts a red flag warning because the winds are going to calm down. The winds wont be nearly as strong tonight as the past couple nights, 15 to 20mile an hour gusts later into tonight. On top of the peaks those gusts could approach 35 to 40 miles an hour, but the winds are not going to pick back up tomorrow and theyll change direction a bit, just hint of an onshore wind by saturday afternoon, but the red flag warning for the north bay mountains and east bay hills continues through 8 00 tomorrow morning. In the past few hours pg e has announced essentially all power has now been restored after it was shut off on wednesday because of fire danger. On the fire watch we learned tonight that two teens were released to their parents after allegedly confessing to starting that fire at the iconic South San Francisco hillside sign and fire crews certainly had their hands full with this one. With a second unrelated fire torching a warehouse just a few hours later. Kpix5s kenny choi breaks it all down. Reporter this warehouse inferno erupted late this afternoon just miles away from the grassfire that was burning on the hillside. The two fires are unrelated, but many Business Owners say that they cant believe what they saw. Towering flames, thick black smoke taking over the skies. Witnesses could see a different firefight miles away in the san bruno mountains. Right when that finishes up, im coming down to the bank, i see this one. I go wait a minute. Whats going on here . Reporter as crews battle the fivealarm grassfire to the north, they spotted this warehouse fire just to the south around 3 00. One of the companies actually noticed that they had seen something or thought they saw something. We started sending crews down here and at the same time getting reports that there was a fire here. Within seconds it just caught on fire and it was just flames up to the sky. Reporter fire Officials Say more than 18 engines were battling the fire on sign hill. More than 18 engines also arrived to attack this blaze at raison detre, a bakery thats been in the bay area more than 25 years. Owners could only watch after escaping the burning building. The initial resources were here fairly quickly, but they were quickly overwhelmed. Reporter South San FranciscoFire Department says the second, third and fourth alarm engines arriving on scene got delayed by about a minute and a half. A good portion of people are fighting this fire on the hill in the north. We start moving resources from the south in to backfill those stations that dont have resources because theyre at the incident just in case theres Something Like this. Two fires within an hour here, man, everybodys getting their workout today. These firemen, without them, you know, were grateful for these guys. Reporter no significant injuries to report, but there was significant damage to the 22,500 square foot baking facility. The fire didnt spread to other businesses, but firefighters will remain on scene throughout the night and into the morning to keep an eye on hotspots. In South San Francisco, kenny choi, kpix5. Once again, within the last 90 minutes we learned that two teenagers confessed to setting that hillside fire. In Solano County a 100acre brushfire forced part of i80 to be shut down in vacaville earlier. All westbound lanes at midway road have since reopened. Meanwhile in cupertino a rally to vote no on prop 16 led by High School Students and community leaders. Students there say that considering race in Public Institutions will raise the bar for californians and that education reform is needed instead. According to the secretary of state of tonight, more than 1. 5 million mailin ballots have been returned. This time four years ago that number was just 150,000. The most famous lemur in america is back home tonight. Heres maki right after his rescue last night. The San Francisco zoo tweeted this video and he was hungry. The zoo said maki is somewhat anxious after being stolen. Elaine liu and her sons kindergarten friends saw the lemur in the parking lot of Hope Lutheran day school last night in daly city. Liu immediately called animal control and zoo handlers showed up. The kids were all watching the lemur Walking Around and we found it sitting in one of the playhouses. Poor little guy. Police believe 30yearold los angeles man Cory Mcgilloway broke into the zoo and stole maki on wednesday. Hes being charged with burglary, grand theft of an animal, looting and vandalism. All of a sudden the shark population along the california coast appears to be exploding. Reporter stacy butler has the new video to prove it. This was a big year. Chris lowe and his crew at Cal State Long Beach Shark Lab tagged last year. And the aggregations were larger and stayed around longer than they have past years. Reporter dr. Lowe tweeted his unprecedented findings and shared this drone video of the great white babies nd juveniles swimming along socal beaches from san diego to santa barbara. This year there were just more sharks around and the question is why . Reporter lowe is studying the habits of great white sharks to protect them and us, but with social distancing and limited lab time hes had to send fewer staff out to tag the sharks. Hes amazed they found so many sharks that are still swimming in Southern California waters. Normally in our fall when our water temperature gets to the low 60s, that seems to be a cue that drives them to migrate south to baja and so far here we are, midoctober and the sharks are still sticking around. Usually they dont bug you, but its still kind of sketchy that theres jaws and all his buddies in the water. Im not too worried about the sharks. I feel like in huntington there hasnt been a shark attack many so many years and they dont really come close enough to bother anyone. Lets take a live look at San Francisco city hall. The school board is defending its plan tonight to rename 44 schools, this after mayor london breed slammed its timing calling it offensive. Breed says the board should focus on its reopening plan, not renaming schools. It comes after a district Advisory Board recommended changing the names of dozens of schools because of their connections to oppression, slavery or genocide. In a statement San Francisco unified says its priority is to reopen schools for inperson learning and its not using time or energy on school name changes. The volunteer Advisory Committee is leading that. The district also acknowledges the timing may be difficult and has conveyed those concerns to the committee. Reporter normally there would be a big line of people waiting here to get into this Haunted House at the Alameda County fairgrounds and not a line of cars, but this year the fields family had to get creative to still be able to scare people but maintain those social distancing guidelines. This is the 29th year the fields family has operated the pirates of emerson Haunted House, but the first ever in a pandemic. We werent going to let halloween get canceled here in the bay area this year. Reporter a Haunted House that started in their home has turned into a major attraction drawing thousands of people every year, but with covid19 the fields family had to think outside the box. We were either going to have to shut down this year and just start another one next year or our creative family came up with an idea. Reporter the fields family created ten acres into a drive thru Haunted House. I thought it was great. It was a lot of scare through it and it got me real good a couple times. It was wonderful. They did a really great job, lots of fun stuff. Im glad its over, though. Reporter cars weave and out at a very slow speed oftwo to three miles per hour. It offers all the typical thrills and spills of a Haunted House. There was a guy that jumped on the car and snapped weird little metal things. That scared me. According to the Alameda County health department, many traditional halloween celebrations carry high risk of spreading covid19. This Haunted House, though, allows many to have a taste of halloween. Lets look back at some of the records we tied or set today. Santa rosa got up to 101 degrees. That ties a record. 97 in napa also tying a record and new records set in san jose, oakland, San Francisco and Half Moon Bay got up to 92 degrees. Thats one of the hottest temperatures ever recorded on any date in Half Moon Bay as far back as records go and San Francisco, this is only the fifth time that weve been this hot, 92 degrees plus this late in the year. This is unusual territory. Right now its still warm out there, but its kind of a reverse pattern, warmer by the bay and cooler inland. 60s inland and by the bay its 75 degrees. Well end up on an even Playing Field by early tomorrow morning, temperatures in the low 60s, a little warmer on some of the elevated spots in the north and east bay. Thats why the fire danger is still a threat as we head through the rest of the night and temperatures are going to heat up tomorrow, just not as much as today.
