It comes as the country saw nearly 70,000 new cases on friday. That is the most in a single day since july. It pushed the overall number of infections over 8 million, and the death toll to more than 218,000 people. Michael george begins our coverage here in new york this morning. Michael, good morning. Jeff, good morning. New york is in the midst of new shutdowns in some areas as cases continue to rise in a handful of neighborhoods. And whats happening here is happening in much of the country. It was very expected by me. I think theres not any possibility for this to be achieved in october. And that most likely were going to have to go into late 2020 or even early 2021. Half of americans say theyre not confident about taking this vaccine. So should they . Should americans be confident . The answer is, i dont know yet. We have to see the data. Its very hard when you see these polls. There can be nobody advocating yet for a vaccine because we have to advocate with the data. Heres the data, how it works. Heres the safety data, and based on those, myself and i think many other doctors will stand up and say, you need to take this vaccine. It is critical to your safety and the country, but it really depends on the data. One of the things weve heard from so many doctors is get your flu shot. Were entering flu season. Casesor the rise. What other vice do you have for people in this time . Obviously the double wammy of covid19 and influenza or flu can happen. And so flu is preventable in large part by getting a flu shot. We all have to step up and play our part. Getting a flu shot is critical. And then, obviously, its the mask. We saw we have record numbers of cases happening now in many states. 70,000plus cases and 1,000 deaths. So numbers are going up, not going down as we enter the holidays. Dr. Agus, thanksgiving right around the corner here. Dr. Fauci said this week hes not going to visit his kids this thanksgiving. I know tens of millions of families around the country are thinking about this and talking about this. What should they do . Luckily my kids are here so i dont have to worry about that, but it is a major issue. As we get into increasing numbers, and if parents are elderly or grandparents are there, we have to have a lot of concern for them. Thanksgiving this year is not going to be like other years. No question about it. At the same time, as we transition to indoors, as weather gets colder, we have to continue to socially distance and wear masks. Especially when interacting with others or theres going to be more and more trouble. The numbers are troubling at the present time. I cant say it in any other way. New research out from the world health organization, dr. Agus, saying that the effectiveness of current covid treatments is, you know, where are we . Why dont i just ask you plain and simple . So remdesivir, which was an antiviral originally developed for ebola, now well in a trial, at the world health organization. 11,000 people got 1 of 4 different drugs. It did not change survival. The earlier study in the
United States

And now we have dexamethasone. In that setting, remdesivir probably is an active drug but its not a great drug. We dont yet have a home run. My hope is the monoclonal antibodies will be maybe a triple, a lot better treatment in terms of treating the disease than remdesivir is at the present time. Dr. Agus, thank you very much. Vice President ial debate. Politicians may not always be the best arbiters of truth. According to the
Washington Post, the number of false or misleading statements from
President Trump has increased dramatically over the course of his four years in office. This election year, the posts small team of factcheckers released a book that examined more than 15,000 president ial claims. Heres errol barnett. What they are doing say hoax with the ballots. Reporter for 3 1 2 years as president , donald trump has made tens of thousands of claims. Mexico is going to pay for the wall. Dont are about it. The tax cut. Ours is the biggest ever passed. Reporter glenn kessler, the
Washington Post factchecker, has been trying to keep track of all of them. Politicians speak in code words, and they use phrases to mislead people. Reporter but kessler says no one does it more than donald trump. Its not even close. Basically broken the factchecker meters. Reporter kesslers meter of mistruths a scale of pinocchios ridging from 1 to 4. Previously, most politicians would get four pinocchios, our worst rating. Maybe 15 to 20 of the time. But
President Trump gets four pinocchios 65 of the time. I better say think otherwise theyll give you a pinocchio. Reporter his work with
Salvatore Rizzo and meg kelly has been acknowledged by the president and is used across the media landscape to assess the president s truthfulness. The
Washington Post breakdown of all his lies and misleading claims. According to the
Washington Post, since taking office the president has made more than 10,000 more than 16,000 false or misleading claims. Reporter now in their book, donald trump and his assault on truth, they lay out the president s biggest fabrications. Good luck, everybody. Reporter kessler first covered trump, the businessman, in 1990 for newsday. And he really hasnt changed much. But what was different was that people werent necessarily recording it on a daytoday basis. Reporter three decades later, factchecking
President Trump is an allconsuming job. He lies about just about everything. Its about himself, his persona. He lies about his enemies. He lies about policy issues. He misleads about things that he could actually not have to mislead about. Reporter take, for example, the president s claim of job creation in his administration. Since my election, we have created 7 million new jobs. Reporter kessler points out that 600,000 of those jobs were created after trumps election but before he was sworn into office. Theres no reason to mislead about that. Yet, he does. Reporter how much of this is normal and typical when it comes to the white house . Well, every president lies at some point. But most president s are known for one big lie. You can think of, you know, george w. Bush talking about weapons of mass destruction. The iraq regime continues to possess and conceal. Or barack obama and, you know if you want your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. Theyll say that if americans like their doctor, they will keep their doctor. Whats unusual about
President Trump is its a constant, constant series of misstatements. Reporter theres no better example than one of his freewheeling rallies. I was the man of the year in michigan. Can you believe it . Reporter for the book kessler studied his longest one to date. Last december in battlecreek, michigan. The rallies are really where he goes into overdrive. I have the greatest economy in the history of this country. Reporter in two hours, kessler counted more than one statement presented as fact per minute with 67 labeled at false or misleading. Kessler became a fulltime factchecker nearly ten years ago. Five years later, cbs this
Morning Saturday profiled him and the team at factcheck. Org during the 2016 campaign. And since then, new players have entered the field. I brought back 700,000 jobs. Theyve brought back nothing. Daniel, how do you rate that claim . Everything about that claim, wolf, is inaccurate. Reporter but some in journalism worry its not enough. Last month, a member of the
New York Times
Editorial Board wrote facts are vital, but theyre insufficient. And in a column headlined factchecking trumps lies is essential, its also increasingly fruitless, kesslers colleague at the post
Margaret Sullivan wrote, factchecking may make less of a difference than ever. With all due respect to margaret, who i think the world of, i dont think shes right about that. He has never achieved above 50 popularity. And the
Washington Post, we range to have a poll where we tested 11 of his biggest falsehoods and asked americans whether they believed it or not without identifying whether trump had said it. And most americans didnt believe it. So im not sure that this stuff is working for him. Reporter for the past three years, kessler has focused mostly on the president , but thats changed somewhat during the campaign. 2017 tax bill slashed taxes on companies that sent production and jobs overseas. Joe biden has his own history of exaggeration and embellishments. How has your time during the
Trump Presidency impacted the way you factcheck
Vice President joe biden and his campaign . Well, it hasnt impacted the way we factcheck biden. We have less time, probably, to factcheck biden because every day trump comes up with something new. To some extent, trump is harming himself because we only have so much bandwidth. But what i just gave four pinocchios to joe biden the other day, or his campaign. So we have not stopped factchecking joe biden. You write about the lasting impacts on the presidency, posttrump. What will that be . A lot depends on whether or not trump gets reelected. If hes defeated, i think politicians will say, you know, telling constants falsehoods is not necessarily a ticket to success. But if he wins . If he wins, well, all bets are off. Reporter for cbs this

While growing up in montana, he dreamt of a career in music, but his life was changed by an early tragedy. Tester took over the
Family Business and eventually entered politics where hes currently serving his third term in the u. S. Senate. He has picked some pretty big fights in d. C. Along the way. In his new book grounded, he has a message for both parties. There we go. Nice. Oh. That looked good. Yeah, it did. Nice form, wasnt it . Reporter we dont know many senators who would agree to play a game of p. I. G. With us on a court. But jon tester isnt like most senators. Oh, yes. The bottom line is that the farm is really who i am. Reporter tester grew up in big sandy, montana, with parents who worked the land and butchered. Tester loves sports and music but he also wanted to help. As he writes in grounded, early eagerness changed the course of his life at the age of just 9. Can i see your hand . What happened . Its you never get in a fight with
Power Equipment because
Power Equipment always wins. Reporter his left hand was torn apart. He lost
Three Fingers in a meat grinder and to this day deals with spiking pain when he knocks it the wrong way. I cannot remember sticking my hand in the throat of that grinder. I remember pulling my hand out. I think it hiptnotized me. The way you talk about what happened in the book is very graphic and very emotional. I did the audio portion of this book, and i know the people who were in the audio studio were shaking their head at me because i had a real hard time talking about it. It brought tears to my eyes, and i got choked up and have to start over and rerecord and rerecord. And its because im a lot older now, and as a kid, i looked at it from a kids perspective. Kids are rough and tumble and rock n roll and easily adapt. When you get to be a parent and think about what my folks went through, it had to be really, really, really hard, especially for my mother who was there. Reporter you dont think youd be a senator today if that hadnt happened. It would have certainly changed my life. Who knows. I might have, you know, ive got a bachelor of science and music. I might have went into music and played saxophone instead of trumpet and ended up in new york city with some doggone jazz band. Who knows. Truth is you just dont know where life is going to take you. And it made me a little different. Reporter testers onetime dream of playing music professionally may have ended, but he still went on to teach music. While also reffing
High School Basketball and running the farm. 25 years ago, he felt a political itch and rose from the ranks of local school board to state legislature to eventually being elected as a democratic u. S. Senator in 2006. The book opens with his
Biggest National moment so far. In 2018, he released damaging information about ronny jackson, the president s nominee to run the department of veterans affairs. Jacksons nomination was pulled. President trump called on tester to resign. Did you regret that that process had to get so ugly . Of course. I would much rather it not, and we tried to through the people that we knew in the white house to try to bring some common sense to the situation. But in the end, veterans are my foremost obligation. And much higher obligation to them than to the president. So im going to do whats right by them. Reporter the book is called grounded and its your outreach to
Rural Communities. Yep. Particularly how democrats can reach out to
Rural Communities and reconnect. Why do you think theyve lost some of those communities . I think a lot of it has been the fact we havent shown up and when we have shown up we havent expressed what we stood for very well. If you look at the values that democrats have and what we really stand up for, good education, good health care, medicare, social security, making sure our veterans are taken care of and good infrastructure, those are all things that democrats stand for. I saw a headline calling montana a deep red state. Its really not. No. Based on the way people have voted. Youre right. The past 20 years or so. Its a deep libertarian state. Truth is you have democrats, republicans and theyre all libertarians. Reporter tester has won reelection twice in a state where
Hillary Clinton received less than 36 of the vote in 2016. Hes made hay railing against the influence of lobbying money, though he acknowledges hes taken plenty of it himself. Especially following the controversial 2010
Supreme Court decision,
Citizens United versus fec. Twhen comes to lobbying money, too, a lot more lobbying money for you and everybody else. Yeah. After citizens. Yeah. And i think its one of the reasons we have the division in our country right now politically. But the argument is free speech. Its free speech. Money and free speech, i dont get it. Were sitting here talking. We can grab a mic and my neighbor can grab a mic or get on the radio. If ive got 10 million ive got a lot more free speech than you. I know the
Supreme Court made the decision, but i dont agree with that connection. Reporter testers commute is extreme. 4,000 miles round trip every week via car and planes. So he never spend toocs too muce away from his family and the farm. I had many people tell me when i said im going to keep farming and go home every weekend. They said youll never last. Weve been doing it now for nearly 14 years. You talk in the book as well about some of the senators who you learned from when you first startd who had been there for a long, long time, including senator ma cullsky, senator bird. Do you still want to be in the senate when youre 85 or 90 . No. No, i dont. Look, i love the senate. Its great. I get to work with great people in the state and great people on both sides of the aisle in the senate. But it aint the best job i ever had. Being a farmer is the best job i ever had. Wow. And you believe him when he said it, too . Absolutely. We get up at 2 00, 3 00 in the morning to come in here, right . He gets up at 2 00, 3 00 in the morning to drive an hour or two to an airport, take two flights, get into washington, spend a few days there and then come back every weekend. Devotion. Yep. The death toll is now more than 218,000 people. At the same time, the rising infection rate is putting a strain on hospitals. Hospitalization rates are up in all but eight states. Its just one example of a movement that includes another maker of first aid products putting racial sensitivity first. Roar you got this. Reporter
Toby Meisenheimer is the founder of trucolor bandages. Hes made a medical grade brand to match an array of skin tones, a need he discovered while tending to his adopted son. He had nicked his forehead. Came to me crying. And i went into the cabinet and grabbed a band aid and put it on his forehead and we sat on the couch and cuddled and it was kind of like, for the first time, the scales fell from my eye. 38 years of life and how have i not noticed this before . Reporter in 2013 he searched for an alternative and about a year later ran into arthopedic hand surgeon dr. Raymond wurapa. He designed a better bandage for knuckles and fingers, inspired by his son christian. Amazing to see where we were. Reporter and a team of fathers was made along with two other members, trucolor bandages was born. We make bandages for all shades of skin. Thats the beauty of it, i think. By combining our efforts, we can accomplish more together. And have an offering that i think sends the right message, especially in these times. Reporter so what is your message to the medical community when it comes to inclusion . Yes, the bandage helps with healing, physically, but theres also an emotional, psychological aspect to what it does. Just seeing that youre acknowledged for who you are and there are options out there. It took my breath away. Reporter that message was received over 2,000 miles away by dominique. For the first time in my life, i know what it feels like to have a bandaid in my own skin tone. You can barely even spot it in the first image. He tweeted that feeling and hundreds of thousands of people worldwide liked back. Including star wars
Actor John Boyega and that started a conversation about race. Didnt expect to have the reaction. And so it just shocked me. It really took my breath away. And, you know, i felt silly for having that reaction. Youre still having it. I see it in your eyes. Yeah, theres a part of me that still does feel silly. There are far more important struggles like, again, police brutality, like employment discrimination. To me, this was just part of a broader story of racial exclusion. And it was just a small symbol. Reporter even today, products advertised as nude are not nude for everyone. From high heels to undergarments, athletic tape to even crayons. We start off life with images in a coloring book. Youre right. I remember as a little girl, there was never a color that described that i could that i could describe or ascribe as me. Same thing. Same exact thing. And so i felt when i saw the drawing, a portrait, that it wasnt me. And i just didnt feel complete. I didnt feel included. And i just didnt feel like that was me. Find your color. Reporter mimi dixon manages brand equality and activation for crayola. She launched colors of the world this summer. A crayon pack dedicated to just about every skin tone. It was important for us to do it in the right way. Isnt it just varying the colors of the nude spectrum . It is not. We want truly colors that represent skin tones, right . Were crayola, and we know color. We dont necessarily know skin tones. You can see this is a little pinker. Reporter they brought in a makeup pro. Victor casal, the former chief of mac cosmetics. This is going to change things. People can identify with themselves in a box of 24 crayons. Okay. So, wait. So how do i find my color . Okay. On the box, there are panels that you can put up to your wrist. Look at all of the colors for everyone. This is for everyone. This is everybody. This is everyone. You just start coloring. Just make a little swatch. Actually that is your color. I am medium golden, people. That is your color. Yea that is your color. Reporter crayolas expansion of skin tone options begin in 1992 but this new pack is a first because its marketing them as a source of inclusion. Why did you choose to market the colors of the world separately, not in the traditional 32pack or the 16pack . This is, you know, skin tone crayons. We wanted to make sure that was clear. So 20 years from now it might be in the it could be a bigger pack. Most certainly. Its not just a crayon. It is about feeling included, being seen. Feeling valued. How do you expect this to impact your bottom line . It wasnt necessarily about the bottom line. Reporter but for any business, money does matter. They are seeing that africanamericans money is green. And theres a lot of it. Reporter and the impact of widening the spectrum of inclusive product lines can be profitable. According to cheryl grace, senior
Vice President with
Nielsen Holdings which tracks africanamerican and
Multicultural Consumer trends. Africanamericans buying power right now at 1. 4 trillion is about the equivalent of the buying power of mexico or spain. And the 1. 8 trillion that were projected to spend in just 3 1 2 years is larger than the today the spending power or gdp of russia, of canada, and most of the growth in the
United States has actually come from
Multicultural Consumers. And the fact that 10 of blacks and 10 of hispanics and i think 20 of
Asian Americans marry outside of their race tells you that thats only going to continue. And you cant afford to leave that much money laying on the table. Reporter and as brands try to connect with the current social climate, consumers will ultimately decide if the companys intentions must align with the products they sell. When we really want to achieve change in the world, its often done at an individual level. Its done in the context of a relationship. Its dr. W and i working on a project together, despite our conferences, despite the fact our skin color doesnt match, but its the beauty of that diversity that is diversity in healing. I love the story behind the product. And i just have to point out, we shot part of this before covid19. When you were close together. We were really close together. This is about folks who traditionally have felt invisible and now feel seen. It seems like the thing i want to say. Why did it take so long . Like that idea of, until you think of it, until you see it, until you live it you may not it never dawned on me that a bandaid was supposed to match my skin tone. Youre medium golden . Is that what that is . Medium golden. Youre hot yello. I was like, what are you talking about. It took the makeup industry coming into it to get the skin tones right. From fashion model to
Food Industry entrepreneur. Up next on the dish hawa hassan has been spicing things up with products that capture her native africa. Now she has recipes from grandmothers in eight nations. Youre watching cbs this

Hawa hassan grew up here in the
United States, but it was her homeland and reconnection with her family that sparked her passion. To bring the flavors of home here, she started a line of sauces and just released a cookbook in bebes kitchen. I sat down with hassan to learn more about the book and the journey that brought her to it. Pa paya with vanilla sauce. This is corn, potatoes and green peas. Sauteed cabbage also from kenya. Sugo from somalia. Reporter this table, full of african dishes, is food entrepreneur hawa hassan. My dream was to always be at the table. And then slowly, but surely, take over the table. And, i mean, im looking at this table. Im like, what is happening . Youve taken over the table. Its a whole table. Reporter the recipes are all in hassans new cookbook in bebes kitchen. Bebe means grandmother and its bebes from eight african countries who provided the recipes found on hassans pages. Why did you want to do this book . I wanted to do this book because i hadnt seen people like myself reflected in books in this way. And in this exploration in recipes through conversation with these women, i really felt like they were missing from the narrative and in turn, i was missing from the narrative. Reporter hassan was born in somalia. At the start of the civil war in 1991, she fled with her mother and siblings to a refugee camp in kenya. Hassan was just 4 years old. My brother and i went from being children to like young adults. How do you do that at 4 . You just do what your mom says. So everybody started pulling their weight. Reporter her mother had hoped to move the family to the u. S. But it was hassan alone who got the chance to go to seattle at age 7. You had to be terrified. No, i was playing my role in the family. I thought heres an adventure. Ill get a feel for the land and then theyll come, which i didnt think it would take more than a year to get documents to come. As it turned out blackhawk happened. Sponsorship for somalis happened. My mother remarried and moved to norway where they still live. And you were still in seattle . I was still in seattle. Reporter hassan was assimilating to the states. I joined the basketball team. I joined 4h. I became really what i call an american teenager. Eating taco bell . I was eating taco bell. I didnt know how to even do this. You know, i left all this behind. Reporter did you miss home . You know, i didnt give myself an opportunity to do a lot of missing because if i did, i would have cracked. But what i later found out was that i missed the smell of home. Thats what i really missed. Reporter after high school, hassan began earning a living as a model which exceeded expectations financially but personally left her wanting more. I knew it wasnt a space where i was welcomed. Oh, we already have enough of you or shes not black enough. Shes not white enough. I started to really drown in narratives that were placed on me. I was everything but hawa hassan. And i kept thinking, about how do i get back to the center of who i am . Thats when i went on a quest to reunite with my family. Reporter after 15 years, in 2008, hassan finally visited her mom and siblings in norway. It was incredible in every sense of the words. I had found a belonging. I had found things i longed for. In my culture we say paradise is at the feet of your mom. To just be at home with her and be in the kitchen with her, to be on the floor, to wake up in the mornings together. And the smell. You got that smell back. I got all of that. So once you had sort of a taste of that, some would think, why not stay there with them . But you came back. Why . Because i am incredibly independent. Reporter buha sauns mom did get her independent daughter to think about what was next. How did you land on food . Just went back to, how can i tell stories and how can i change the conversation about who people are saying somalis are and how can i do it through food. Reporter she saw space in the
Food Industry with a lack of african cuisine. This is the vanilla sauce for the lobster. Oh, my gosh. Its a
Great Holiday dish. Reporter in 2015, she launched her first venture. A sauce line. I just thought, hot sauce. You know y not slowly inch my way onto the table by introducing people to flavors of where im from. Reporter what started in a kitchen in harlem has grown into nationwide distribution of the sauces with a focus on direct to consumer sales. The advice that was given to me was to write a business plan. And so i knew two sauces from somal somalia, build it for a few years. Get a proposal going for in bebes kitchen. While dog that, write a pitch for a show. All of it has just come to pass. Reporter adding diversity, hassan says, to an industry still in need of it. Oh, theres lots of tokenizing. I wont be in a space that doesnt have people that look like me in it or is not welcoming to folks like me. If i get inside, i always ask for another person who looks like me to come along. If theres pushback from that, i know how to pack up my bags and leave. Reporter she traces that steadfastness in herself and her beliefs to her mom. Traits also belonging to the bebes in her cookbook. All of them are really proud and grateful that these stories are outside of themselves now. Where we are as a society right now and the conversations were having about race, about inclusion, about changing the system, does this fit in, in some way . Does absolutely. When you bring people together over a plate of food, a glass of wine. No conversation is too big or too small. I think that, for the first time in this country, the hard conversations are being had and so my space in that is to be able to bring people together to put the food on the table and allow my community to speak to one another. Theres a saying that shes used before. She wants to build longer tables and shorter fences. And that sort of helps to have that conversation with the food she her plans are expanding that sauce line right now and shes working on a couple other projects. Really an incredble story to get to where she is now from where she came. I love that she missed the smell of home. Doesnt that make stoeense t you . All those smells from childhood. We all have them. I was looking on the food on that table and it took me back to kenya and tanzania. It was just like nibbling on food and getting a taste of it all. And her point was that was just missing from the industry because it hadnt been brought there. The same with a book like this. Somebody hadnt proposed it. People didnt know. Now its out there right now and adds to the diversity. And well go out and buy it. Cant wait to try it. Now something as exotic as those flairs. Animals seldom seen by humans but captured by some of the greatest wildlife photographers. Well look at the winners of an international competition, next. Youre watching cbs this

Reporter philip, seen here with his wife and child, always knew he was adopted but never looked for his birth family until his son came home with a school project. It was a map and color your origins or where your family is from. I had to tell him, i really am not sure. So that kind of sparked my interest. And then when the covid hit, we had so much time to do all this. Reporter the 35yearold took an ancestry dna test and quickly discovered a connection. I saw a mother and aunt. Reporter he says the theme of our impact on nature runs stronger this year than in the previous 5 1 2 decades of the competition. Take this image of a man slicing up bats in an indonesian market. We know that markets such as this are a hotbed for diseases such as covid. Viruses that are moving from animals to humans. And then theres destruction of the amazon. Those two images, to me, are screaming both
Natural History and the human impact story. Reporter other photos tell a more subtle story like this picture of puffins taken by 14yearold evie easterbrook.
