Reporter bank of america turned down our request for interview but told us it is working close in an aggressive effort to fight fraud. Edd confirmed it knows of 350,000 accounts that have been frozen due to suspected fraud. The most likely scenario was there was a data breach somewhere. Reporter a certified fraud examiner. Fraudsters were able to capture the data of the cards, the people, accounts, card numbers, any other information they needed in order to produce a duplicate card. Reporter he suspects a large enterprise is behind the fraud attack that appears to have involved atms all over Southern California and nevada. This is a massive operation. You are thinking these are physical cards that have to be printed and somebody has to go to the atms. Reporter the fraudsters can buy your secret pin on the dark web. It makes stealing information easy because unlike regular debit cards, they dont have a chip. By having the chip, you have your information on the card encrypted in the chip and it makes it more difficult especially to duplicate the cards as whereas the magnetic strip is 30yearold technology. Bank of america gets paid from the state to take care of this. So the fact that we dont have a chip, it just signals to me that were not as important as their other clients.
