And President Trump holds four rallies in pennsylvania. The keystone state is seen as the key to the election. With 20 electoral votes up for grabs, both campaigns have been pushing hard there ain the closing days of the race. The president held a socially distanced rally in minnesota, a state hes hoping to add to his column after narrowly losing it in 2016. The lastminute campaigning comes as the u. S. Hit another record high for Coronavirus Infections in a single day again on friday when nearly 100,000 new cases were reported. Paula reid kicks off our coverage from minneapolis this morning. Paula, good morning. Good morning. In the last few days before, the le election, President Trump is hitting these key battleground states. Many are also covid hot spots, including here in minnesota where last night the states governor restricted the size of the president s event as the state hit a record in new covid cases. Hello, rochester. Reporter President Trump hammered the states democratic governor for limiting his rally to just 250 supporters following covid outbreaks tied to two previous rallies held there. There are at least 25,000 people who wanted to be here tonight. They were here for a long time. They waited and waited. And then the governor did bad things. Reporter with covid raging in every swing state he hit friday, the president still tried to downplay the virus. Its a pandemic, and you are doing good. Reporter but in michigan, a state he carried in 2016, and now trails biden by eight points, covid hospitalizations are up96 since october 1st. Its always cases are up and people go crazy, you know. No, its you live with it, and you have and you know what to do. We understand it now. You have to understand it. But were making that beautiful turn. Reporter mr. Trump tried to undermine confidence in the death toll by falsely suggesting doctors intentionally overreport covid deaths. You know, our doctors get more money if somebody dies from covid. Thats true. Its like 2,000 more. So you get more money. Reporter the president s rally in green bay was criticized by the local Hospital System which warned it was a bad idea given the city has one of the highest infection rates in the nation. No, i dont at all. And theyre outdoor rallies. Theyre all outdoor. The president s attempts to downplay the virus are undermined by evidence from the cdc. Cbs news has learned cdc data shows cases are surging in 49 states. On a call with state governors, Coronavirus Task force member dr. Deborah birx warned were seeing now a surge across the northern part of the United States. We now have about 1200 counties. Almost onethird of the country in our hot spot category. Reporter today, President Trump will make four stops in pennsylvania. A pivotal swing state that he won in 2016 that recent polls show him trailing former Vice President joe biden. Jeff . Paula, thank you. Team biden is trying to solidify its standing or take the lead in a number of midwestern states. The former Vice President made stops in wisconsin, minnesota and iowa on friday. Hes been hammering President Trump over his handling of the coronavirus. Ed okeefe is here in new york with the latest. Ed, good morning. Good morning, jeff. Today biden is reuniting with an important sidekick, former president obama will join him for events in flint and detroit as democrats try to snatch back michigan, a state they lost four years ago. But it was bidens stop in iowa that was perhaped most interesting. Democrats are trying to turn the Hawkeye State from red to blue. With President Trump defending states he won on friday, joe biden went on offense in iowa, a state now in play after the president won it easily in 2016. Folks, we can do this. Theres nothing beyond our capacity. It was a far cry from february when he lost badly in the iowa caucus. Now hes within striking distance of winning the Hawkeye State as they have coronavirus cases on the rise. The held a socially distanced drivein rally. Here at the fairgrounds, the iowa state fair canceled for the First Time Since world war ii. And donald trump has given up. Reporter biden also dueled with the president in next door minnesota where he leads by nine with just three days to go. A longtime democratic state, biden was asked why he needed to schedule a stop there. I dont take anything for granted. Were going to work for every single vote up to the last minute. Reporter attention is turning south to texas, a state considered battleground territory amid a record surge of voting. More than 9 million texans have voted early. Thats more than the total number of voters in the 2016 race. Some show it could be close in reliably red texas and that brought Kamala Harris to the Lone Star State on friday. You have power and at election time, that power will be through your vote. Reporter but there may be trouble brewing for biden in florida amid reports that democrats are failing to turn out supporters in miamidade county. An area where Hillary Clinton dominated four years ago, even if she narrowly lost the state. The Biden Campaign says the pandemic kept them from doing most traditional outreach in florida so other groups are stepping in like the unite here labor union. First we started calling people over the phone. And by the first week of this month we started knocking on doors to get people out there to vote. Were trying our best. Ed is back with us for more on the state of the race. You were just focusing on florida. Weve talked about a lot state ofs. Three days to go in the campaign. Give us an idea of where the campaigns will be focusing. At this point with fewer than 72 hours to go its not what they are saying, its where they are going. If you look at the next three days, the state getting the most attention is pennsylvania. The president s holding four events there today. Tomorrow, biden gives a speech in philadelphia, and then on monday, the entire biden harris ticket, the two candidates and their spouses will barnstorm the keystone state running from end to end trying to take back that state. Another one of those Big Industrial states democrats know they need to win back. Biden emotionally invested in the state. He was born there. In the senate, often called pennsylvanias third senator because hes from neighboring delaware, and hes spent more time in that state than any other believing hes the kind of democrat that can win it back. But the president holding several rallies, 14 over three days in 7 states. Pennsylvania, though, getting the most attention from both sides. You said it right there. Is there anything that President Trump or, for that matter, Vice President joe biden can say in these remaining days that can influence voters . Well, republicans would like the president to keep focused on the economy. They got some encouraging news late in the week with the record gdp growth. The best quarterly growth rate since world war ii as were trying to claw our way out of the pandemic recession. Probably not enough just yet but an encouraging sign. Of course, the president doesnt necessarily stay on message. Talks about those minor grievances that he has with all sorts of people and then made these interesting comments suggesting that doctors are profiting off the deaths of coronavirus patients. Something that biden hit him for yesterday in his later stops. For the biden team it is basically all about the pandemic. Raised concerns about the president s management of it. Vow to try to do a better job of handling the crisis and getting the economy back on track. Well see whether the president can stick to his message but he is certainly going down or going down to the wire, we should say, in the final days here. Doing what he does best. Holding those rallies and bringing out his supporters in hopes they head to the polls by tuesday. Tons of early voting which is a good sign for democrats. Does this then now come down to republican turnout on election day . Yeah. So we have seen record early voting which means that people are heeding the warnings and suggestions they should try to get this done sooner than election day in the event the lines are too long. There are only about 20 states that give us the partisan breakdown of who cast a ballot by mail or in person so far. That does favor democrats. That matches the polling weve been doing for months that suggested more democrats than republicans would do it early. But that doesnt mean that democrats are going to win. Remember, the only piece of math that matters is who won after all the votes have been counted. We have to wait until election day. When we anticipate in many of the biggest states that a lot of republicans will show up as they normally do. And the only poll that counts is election day. Ed, thank you so much. Ed will be a part of our election coverage. Cbs news 2020 america decides. Coverage begins at 7 00 eastern this tuesday night. Well be bringing you all of the results as they come in. And its sure to be exciting. There are new urgent warnings this morning about the countrys climbing coronavirus numbers which show infections rising in 47 states. There are now over 9 million coronavirus cases in the United States rising by nearly 100,000 new cases friday alone. In the last two weeks, a million more people tested positive. And in 16 states, the number of cases is at an alltime high. All of this as the number of lives lost approaches 230,000. With cold weather moving in and more events shifting inside, Health Experts fear the worst of the pandemic is yet to come. Here to help us make sense of it all is Michael George who has been covering the pandemic. Michael, good morning. Good morning. A second wave is indeed here. Thats how oregons governor put it friday. Some states are doubling down. Others, though, are still resisting stricter safety measures. In the immediate future, theres an election and halloween today only complicating ways to combat the mounting tragedy. A new trick to get a treat in a pandemic may be just a drop in the bucket. Even a socially distanced candy pipe chute still allows costumed kids to face risks if they go out tonight. The plastic masks that go with the costumes. They arent the same as the cloth mask. Advise moms and dads to make a cloth mask that goes with the costumes. And for voters in line to beat the election day rush. It didnt stop one florida polling place from shutting down after covid hit. Overstretched hospitals are telling a much more tragic story. Icu beds are 80 full in nearly a quarter of u. S. Hospitals. According to a federal government memo obtained by National Public radio. A mounting tragedy that could have been avoided. A third of the population that believes this pandemic is a hoax and they believe that it will end next wednesday. And no Public Health messaging is having an impact on that population. Reporter certainly not in wisconsin where the democratic Governor Tony Evers cant get the Republican Legislature to support safety measures. If we want to do this right and stop it in its tracks, people have to wear a freaking mask. South dakota is battling a Positivity Rate of 46 . California wants to avoid that. And has halted some plans to loosen restrictions. Youre seeing 20, 30plus percent Positivity Rates now in other parts of our country. Were at 3. 0 over a 14dayed. 3. 2 over sevenday, but were not taking our eye off the ball. Weve got to box this in. Oregon is considering clamping down after the state saw record case numbers this yeek. Oregons cases are rising. Just like the rest of the countrys are, and, frankly, cases around the globe. The second wave that we have all been worried about is here. And for the second time, testing an experimental covid antibody drug has been paused to investigate a safety issue that could impact severely ill patients. Theyll continue to test less sick patients. Michael, thank you. Good to see you here in studio. The surging number of covid19 cases in europe is forcing governments there to double down on Public Health safety. We have arrived at show me the money, one of the most important paintings of banksys provocative career. Reporter sothbys auctioned it off. 2,500,000. Bidders quickly ran up the price. This auction comes a year after another banksy painting of the British Parliament replaced by chimps smashed his record selling for more than 12 million. Banksy is today one of the most sought after artists. Hes really made that step from being a muchloved figure in Popular Culture to actually being one of the most desirable, collectible artists of our time. Reporter this auction didnt disappoint. Show me the monet sold for plenty of monet. While it didnt break his record, it sold for nearly 10 million. Ian lee, cbs news, london. Cbs this Morning Saturday will be right back. Part of its rich history is a candy shop believed to be the oldest in the nation. Well pay them a holiday visit on a special edition of the dish. That is ahead. First, our top story this hour. The final weekend of the president ial race. Today all four president ial and Vice President ial nominees will be making appearances in critical swing states. Joe biden will be joined by barack obama in michigan. Bidens running mate, senator Kamala Harris, makes three Campaign Stops in florida. Vice president mike pence will appear in North Carolina while President Trump headlines four rallies in pennsylvania, which is shaping up, again, as one of the most hotly contested states ahead of tuesdays election. The president hosted a socially distanced rally in rochester, minnesota, on friday. State officials capped the attendance at 250 people after more than two dozen coronavirus cases were linked to other Trump Campaign events in the state. The president also campaigned in michigan and wisconsin on friday. Former Vice President biden, meanwhile, made his first of three threestate swing of the campaign. The democratic nominee visited minnesota, iowa and wisconsin. Along with the president ial race, control of the house and the senate are also on the ballot. For analysis of all thats at stake were joined by bob cusack, editor in chief of the hill. Hes in washington. Bob, welcome. Good morning. Thanks for having me. Absolutely. We have a lot of recordbreaking early voting out there. What can we read into that . Well, its significant. We could have, in modern times, a record breaker as far as percentage of the country thats voting. And thats significant. And that really is a good sign for democrats who were really obviously disappointed about 2016 and specifically that a lot of democrats didnt vote. So the percentage here, the early voting is just a stunning number. Basically when you think about it, on election day, less than 1 in 3 people in all likelihood are going to be voting in person. Obviously, because of the pandemic. But those are good signs, early signs for democrats. Bob, weve seen the candidates crisscrossing the state, focusing on the stretch. What states will you be focused on tuesday night . Listen, i think you have to look at florida and pennsylvania. Those 24 staare two states the president is all in. Hes got to win both. Florida were going to know unless its super close like 2000. Well probably know who is going to win that state early. If donald trump does not win that staircte, its basically o. The media, all of us wont be calling it because theres going to be so many ballots still to be counted in various states because theres so many different state rules, but early on, watch for florida. Must win for donald trump. And also then, obviously, youve got to look at michigan, wisconsin. And as you move further west. Arizona is a state donald trump won in 2016 and joe biden is a slight favorite there. The president and former Vice President trying to shore up support from black and hispanic voters. How has that strategy changed since 2016 . A lot of similarities between 2016 and 2020. One difference is democrats, if theres one big thing they are concerned about, its the latino vote. That is a vote that came out for Hillary Clinton strongly and there has been concern that donald trump is cutting into that percentage as well as the africanamerican vote, which obviously, goes way democratic. But the goal for the Trump Campaign is just to cut into those numbers. And that could be significant. But another thing you have to look at is older voters which donald trump did very well in 2016. Joe biden is winning that age group right now. Lets turn to the senate. Mitch mcconnell said theres a 50 50 chance that the Senate Remains under republican control. So what are you hearing on the hill . I think this is more of a tossup than the white house right now. I think that joe biden is the favorite. You never know after 2016. Its more of a jump ball. I dont think its 50 50. I think the chances are more the democrats are going to win because republicans are defending a lot more seats. But a lot of these races are tight and because of mailin voting and the pandemic, we may not know for quite some time who is going to be leading the senate because, remember, if democrats win the senate theyll not have a filibusterproof majority. But theyll have a narrow majority. If republicans hold it, theyll also have a narrow majority. Bob cusak, thank you. Stay with cbs news on Election Night and after. Mr. Vice president , i look out over my biden sign in my front yard, and i see a sea of trump flags and yard signs. Thats a voter at a joe biden town hall in pennsylvania last month raising the topic of yard signs. They may not be a scientific gauge necessarily of political support, but they are impossible to ignore giving both supporters of a candidate and a Campaign Operatives a sense of optimism or concern. And as brook silvabraga found out, the sign wars have taken a new turn this year. Reporter its hard to say if they prove anything about the direction of an election. Just the same as putting out the american flag. Showing what side youre on. Reporter but these october ornaments for our divided times i love to decorate anyway. Reporter may be the simplest, most public way to make a political stand. And i said we had a smaller sign in 2016. 2020 we have a big sign. Reporter political yard signs have long dotted the american landscape. But four years ago, something seemed different. How long have you been into the signs . Probably since the 2016 election. Reporter a certain antiestablishment campaign found Fertile Ground in american lawns. What was the motivation . The candidate. The candidate and his story. Reporter from jeane chases New Hampshire yard to gloria ge be rts spread, trump signs bloomed. Something about candidate trump made you want to be public about your support in a way you hadnt been for other candidates. A lot of people were getting disgusted with politicians in general. They say one thing and do another thing. Im getting goose bumps because this man, im telling you, we just have a lot of faith in him. Reporter but the carpet of signs from the master marketer did not sit well with mark graziadio. The other party gave them out like candy. Reporter hes the democratic chairman for wayne county in rural northeast pennsylvania. Yes, its a republican stronghold, but graziadio knew there was another reason his party got trounced in the 2016 sign war. Even in states like pennsylvania where trump won the vote by less than 1 . We were unable to get signs. And people what does that mean, unable to get signs . The campaign wouldnt provide them for us. They thought the signs were a waste of time . They didnt think they were effective. Where we think theyre effective is not so much in getting people to change their minds but to reinforce that there are other people here who think like you do. If you only see signs for the other candidate, then you may think youre overwhelmed. Reporter Jeff Eggleston, another pennsylvania democrat, certainly felt overwhelmed last Election Night. Huge news actually. The ap projecting that donald trump has won the state of pennsylvania. I went to bed and my wife, you know, cried. I mean, we were devastated. And i realized at the time that i hadnt done enough. Reporter when 2020 rolled around, eggleston, who has long supported democratic campaigns, decided the contribution he could make was designing and printing his own joe biden signs. I did one delivery around the state. How many signs . 12,000. Okay. Thats a lot of signs. That was a lot. I was doing cartwheels down the street. I delivered 12,000 signs before you knew it all these people saw them and said, hey, i want those signs. We did an order for 30,000, 40, 20,000. Who is we . Well, me. And that was how Jeff Eggleston came to drive 4,000 miles across pennsylvania and delivered nearly 150,000 joe biden signs. Defying his partys conventional wisdom. For my experience, it started with the Obama Campaign and became like a dogma within the Campaign Community that you just dont deal with it at all. Why . The Democratic Party can be very cerebral. Weve done studies that show if you call people, this percentage of the time you can sway them. When people put a sign in the yard its card to quantify the effect that has on people. Do they prove anything about the direction of an election . Columbia University Professor donald green is one of the few to seriously research the answer. We found an average effect of about 1. 7 percentage point boost. So a candidate who would ordinarily get 48. 3 would get 50. 0. In a close race, that could make the difference. But the research tracked small, local elections. Green hasnt studied the impact on president ial races because of a legal obstacle. We have a bit of a difficulty. We cant use University Funds to buy lawn signs. Youd need someone to donate the signs . Thats right. Getting to the bottom of this is something we certainly can do. The best evidence of their psychological impact may be how opponents treat them. Vandalism has become a bipartisan vice. Which only makes the wagner floyd household that much more remarkable. All our neighbors think were crazy. Yeah, they dont understand it. Joe wagner and megan floyd are lifelong best friends and coowners of this house in johnstown, pennsylvania with a conspicuously divided front yard. So where are we now with the signs . We have three each and then your flag. Theyve been matching each other sign for sign for months. And yet somehow, have not let the names on the cardboard come between them. I actually fixed the one, too, because it broke. He did fix my one biden sign. What does that feel like . Isnt that just totally going against what youre trying to do . I felt like such a traitor. Im just kidding. You know, she has her views, and i have my views. And we can try to respect that. Agree to disagree. Lawn signs do not tell us who will win tuesday. But they do prove something important about the election. Just pushing for a Brighter Future as the sign says. Support for the political process itself. Thats through choice. Just like im having my choice. For cbs this Morning Saturday, brook silvabraga, in wayne county, pennsylvania. I love that couple. I love everything about that couple. The fact they can still get along and yet have such disparate points of view. Heres the bottom line with lawn signs. You leave nothing on the table in a campaign. If you have the money, you know, you need to spend the money. Ad i think that a few elections ago, folks thought the money should go elsewhere. Its a reminder. It just stands out in your mind. I dont know what impact it has, but its there. Still nice joe helped megan. I love that. Good guy. Legend of Sleepy Hollow was popular nearly 100 years ago for one of hollywoods biggest stars at the time, will rogers to take a stab at bringing the ghost story to the big screen. It was First Published 200 years ago by Washington Irving, considered by many to be the father of the american short story. Sleepy hollow may be americas alltime great ghost story. And two centuries later, it is still linked to halloween. Today we visit the history of this classic tale in the spot where it all began. Most people passing by these days dont even know its there. But 25 miles north of new york city in a place overlooking the hudson river, the legend of the headless horseman took off. I cant think of a more iconic halloween character than the headless horseman. He really is the one. Hes the original american ghost story, and hes our arch villain. Reporter Elizabeth Bradley is an author, an expert on the man who first told of the horseman 200 years ago. Washington irving. He wrote here . He did. He wrote in that room there. That was his study. Reporter we spoke to bradley at the sunnyside estate. The stories were witty, mischievous, anarchic and theyve formed the foundation for american literature. Mischievous is a good word for it. Definitely. Reporter after the morn revolution, irvings the legend of Sleepy Hollow unspools the story of Ichabod Crane, an oddball outsider who arrives in town and pursues a beautiful young woman, katrina van tassel. He is then himself pursued by a local phantom known as the headless horseman. As legend goes, the horseman was a soldier who lost his head to a cannonball while fighting for the british. He rises from his grave every night in search of his missing skull. The original tale just 24 pages long seems to grow more famous each year. It was popular when it was First Published, but it was not the story that we know it today. Nobody had heard of the headless horseman. The headless horseman was irvings really to invent in the form in which it took in that story. The story spun countless adaptations. Most notably disneys 1949 classic the adventures of ichabod and mr. Toad. Where are we going . Anywhere but here reporter in the 1999 tim burton film Sleepy Hollow starring johnny depp. Horseman when people revisit the legend of Sleepy Hollow today, what should they think . They should take the time to appreciate the imagery and the way in which its inspired all of the adaptations. Theres something about the mystery and the way in which irving describes the landscape as being one of contagion that i think really describes our own obsession with halloween today. That contagion takes on an even more eerie relevance these days. Guess what else was happening a little more than 200 years ago. Washington irving fled a pandemic. He did. He did. He came to this region first as a teenager, and the reason he did so is because new york was experiencing an epidemic of yellow fever. So people trying to get out of a major city into the suburbs. Very much as they are today. Reporter irvings sunnyside is still open to visitors. Because ofururre itg sknd the bedroom his where he died in 1859 have been preserved. People of all ages come to hear the stories about the legend and its author whose penchant for mischief is on full display. S aite t o the a date thatpor n ways in which irving liked to play with ideas of authenticity, with the notion of history being fixed. People walk by this and say season 56, what does that mean . They think the house as it is today must have all been built in 1656, and i think people would have loved that. But its not true. No, there would haveee a very small farm house here. Not far from the house, the graveyard at the Old Dutch Church where the horseman is said to roam is also a tourist attraction today. So he just hangs out here . That is what they say. We can come back after dark if youd like to test that theory. Irving is buried in the adjacent Sleepy Hollow cemetery. Part of what makes this region feel so charmed and possibly haunted is not only is his home promine ichabod rode and no ichabod. He was never seen again. At least on the pages of irvings story. Whats your favorite version of the story . Id say irvings because theres so much magic in it and theres so much detail and mystery to be mined, and a lot of comedy, too, that people lose sight of. But the ending in irvings version remains nebulous. Its purposefully vague, i think. And thats part of irvings genius. The headless horseman could still be outere . Oh, yes. Hes ageless. Yeah, just dont look behind you. Shout out to seth fox, his first producer piece there. He did a great job with it. North terrytown renamed itself a town in new york to Sleepy Hollow 25 years ago to capitalize on the storys fame which is interesting. And the interesting thing about the story in general, the first 24 pages, its so flyable that theres a version you can find for kids, adults. Tim burtons Sleepy Hollow not for kids. My favorite. I just love tim burtons version. Its a very good movie, but not for kids. Ichabod and mr. Toad is for kids. It would be nice if someone would dress up as the horseman. I do have a headless horseman costume. Were headed to the haunted history of new orleans next. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. For those of you without local news, cbs this Morning Saturday will return in a few minutes. Im annemarie green with a look beyond this mornings headlines. A group of High School Students in texas has a project that teaches home design and construction. Cbs nancy chen explains what valuable life lesson its also teaching them. Reporter its not the biggest house in the world, but for the homeless veteran who receives it, the home could be a life saver. Being able to pick a veteran off the street and be able to give him a home and somewhere to live and grow is just amazing to me. Reporter architecture and engineering students in houston built the 209squarefoot homes. They come with all the essentials. A bed, dining table, cabinets and chairs. Former u. S. Marine Eduardo Rodriguez received the groups first home last year after he suffered a stroke. And that totally upended my life. I lost my job, my home. And just found myself in need. You know, id always been an independent marine, the hero, the do everything on my own. And then i found myself humbled, so to speak. Reporter it usually takes about six months to build these homes. But this one was two years in the making because of the pandemic. The students were determined to get it done. At the end of the day, we are just kids trying to do something with our hands to give back. Reporter the group hopes t make homes for years to come. Nancy chen, cbs news. Cbs this Morning Saturday will be right back. House hunters are often enticed to a property by kitchens and closet space. Some fearless home buyers in new orleans are looking for more. And whats considered one of the most haunted cities in the u. S. , homes supposedly inhabited by ghosts are a big draw. Jamie wax has that story. Reporter its been said that in new orleans, every house has a story. And with over three centuries of history, perhaps it shouldnt be surprising that some of the storytellers refuse to let a little thing like death silence them. It definitely is, at times, energy that is not ours, right . You feel a presence. You hear sounds. You know you a door opens. Door opens. Tv turns on by itself. Lights turn on by themselves. Reporter liz and Jason Williams purchased an historic home on legendary st. Charles avenue just over a year ago. Behind us in the dining room is the place where i think we hear the noises the most. The footsteps directly overhead. Reporter the personal disclose surall the more interesting because jason isnt just a homeowner but also a fixture of local politics. Jason, you are the city council president. I am. Of new orleans. I am. Second term. In no city in america could i imagine a politician happily saying, yes, i live in a Haunted House. Well, we have a different relationship with the dead in the city of new orleans. Reporter not only is it not a liability for a politician to say he lives in a Haunted House in new orleans but a ghost could even be a selling point here, according to realtor and preservationist katie whitry. New orleans has a storied past. And i feel that people relate to the narrative and the stories that the houses have had. Reporter we headed to the oldest and most famous neighborhood in new orleans, the French Quarter, where theres a ghost story around every corner. Its a onebedroom, onebath ground floor unit. I had asked her why she put haunted on the sign. And she said because the owner actually has felt spirits or ghosts in the space. Reporter and here, ghostly presences dont just benefit Residential Properties but commercial ones, too. Like restaurants, muriels and tableau. The restaurants video of possible paranormal activity went viral. I was in their wine cellar and bolts kept flying off the shelves. Now people really want to be there. It strikes me that for a record seventh time this year alone, as we do this interview, new orleans is in the path of a hurricane. Theres no other American City that is experienced such tragedy. And so we are a city of survivors. We have resilience and even our ghosts . Even our ghosts have resilience. Why would they leave . Why would they leave . Thats right. For cbs this Morning Saturday, jamie wax, new orleans. They just rolled off the shelf. Dont know. Dont know. That looks sketchy. Hopefully the ghosts got to taste the wayne. The day itself is the nations second largest commercial holiday. And while this year the trickortreating tradition may not look like that of years past, can you imagine if it never existed at all . Back in 1916, the candy industry actually pitched a different fall holiday called National Candy day. While it didnt stick, the sweet stuff obviously has. We captured a bit of candys rich history with a trip to whats been dubbed americas oldest Candy Company, Ye Olde Pepper Company in salem, massachusetts where it lasts all year long. Salem, massachusetts, may as well be the north pole at christmas. Trick or treat. While the pandemic has added a new variety of masks to the mix and cut down on the numbers, the spirit remains. Why is this so special around halloween . I think its the glamour of beg the consi and Jackie Russell are at the center of it all. As owners of salems Ye Olde Pepper Company candy store. A lot of good stuff. Usually the lines are endless. The father daughter duo are third and fourth generation candymakers. Who still make the same sweet temptations as their companys founder. The history is very important. Thats why we came from. Thats where our company started. Even the equipment that we use dates back to the 1800s. Thats how far back Ye Olde Pepper Company traces its history. To an englishwoman named mary spencer who arrived in america in 1806 after being ship wrecked. She was destitute, landed in salem. Her neighbors asked if there was asking if there was anything they could do for them . She asked for some sugar to make candy. They donated a barrel of sugar and started making her gibraltars. She started selling them on the church steps and turned it into whats believed to be the first commercially sold candy. George pepper bought the business. And by 1830, created a companion treat. And he decided that the gibraltar was sort of a feminine piece of candy. Dainty. It was made in lemon and peppermint flavors so he made a candy called the black jack from molassis. Berkinshaws father would later take it over and move production into the family basement. From like 4 years old, you could smell through the whole house was candy. Thats like a kids dream. Yeah. All the neighborhood kids used to come over and theyd all hang around the windows looking for the samples to come out, which my father used to always pass out the window to them. How young were you when you learned to make candy . I would say maybe around 10. And hes still making it today. Now the kitchen sits adjacent to the stores shop allowing its sugary aroma to entice customers. Burkinshaw passing on recipes to his soninlaw just as his father and grandfather had done before. Like lemondrops made the oldfashioned way. And, of course, there are the gibraltars. Mary spencers same recipe made as she would have back in the 1800s. Isnt there an easier way to do it though, now . Oh, theres definitely an easier way. This is not a business to be in if you are looking for an easy business, an easy way to work. But theres something about maintaining that history and that tradition. Right. And thats what makes us keep going. Ready . Yeah. And while the historic confections remain Ye Olde Pepper Companys biggest sellers, the candy business is one of creativity and innovation. Were always trying to come up with something different. Something to go with the seasons. Or just new ideas. Creativity is also what helped keep the business going when the pandemic hit back in march. We laid everybody off. We shut everything down. And my father and i went to work and tried to figure out what we were going to do. And we were a little panicked. We have all this easter candy. I called my sons school. I said to them, would you mind, you know, putting out an email to the parents. Well make baskets from scratch. They basically saved us at the beginning. They were the reason we were able to continue going. Mary spencer started this because the community reached out and gave her sugar so she could do this. Right. In your time of need, you reached out to the community. Yes, st. Michaels was our lifeline. And now in october, the lifeline is quite simply the line. Even at a third of its normal size with safety precautions in place. Its an extremely big deal. We actually did not plan we did not plan for a large halloween so were around the clock making candy. Were packing candy trying to keep up with everything. Just like the jib ralgibralt which started it all, Ye Olde Pepper Company continues to stand the test of time. I dont see candy going out any time soon but, fingers crossed. My grandfather made it through the great depression, and he lost everything, but he still kept going. Good job. You got it. Youre hired. Im hoping to continue it for my son some day. Ultimately, its his decision, but im keeping it running right now so that some day, he has the option. Same way your dad did. Yep. Its truly in our blood. Its in our blood. Every gibraltar and black jack you eat. True. Of course, i brought black jacks and gibraltars and much more. There are two stores, yoee olde Pepper Company and a store. They have about half their staff back. That started as gummy golf balls that were created into eyeballs for halloween. Oh, good. Its gummy. Jeff, i gave you a gibraltar. 200 years old. Not that one. I mean, not this one in particular, but the oh, yeah, sugar. Thats a wrap, guys. Weve got to go.
