Probably are wondering what is the state of the race so far and what are we still waiting to get in . To get more on that we have Anthony Salvanto. Hes our director of election surveys here at cbs news. Runs the Battleground Tracker polls. Hes been following the race all night. Also Major Garrett still in coat and tie. Wondering if you were going to take that off. Salvanto has already gone down to the Shirt Sleeves and the tie is loosened a little. Good evening. Good morning to the two of you. Where are we at this hour . Okay. So tony, let me take you through first the five states that we at this moment consider tossups. And thats wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania, North Carolina and georgia. All the others projected or in the case of nevada and arizona as of this moment, leading to joe biden. The issue here is that, let me walk you through. In wisconsin, we estimate at least almost 700,000, 672,000 ballots still remaining to be counted. Theyve been cast. Not yet counted. And we can do similar things for michigan, over 1. 7 million. Still to be counted. Pennsylvania, just running through here. 1. 8 million still to be counted, et cetera. Millions of blallots out there still waiting to be counted. Just under 5 million roughly in the five tossup states. Lets go back to wisconsin. I want to go through this process because voters might say whats the margin right now . What does it look like . And why do we wait . And the reason is that because they heard the president say, were leading. Okay. There you can see the numbers. But we need to wait because these are the ballots that have been counted. And these are the tallies that Elections Officials have reported to us which is what we do at the decision desk. We get the vote reports from the Elections Officials and we turn around and report them to you. Let me pause you right there. This is really important. So the president just told the nation that what we see here is legitimate. Okay. Then that means these votes that have been counted are legitimate. What hes also suggesting is the votes that have not yet been counted arent legitimate which is factually wrong. Those votes that have been legally cast but not yet counted are just as legitimate as the ones that have been counted that reflect this. In a political sense we have no idea who these 672,000 people voted for. We know they may have been cast from democratic counties or republican counties so we might have some sense in a modeling standpoint, but we have no idea until the Elections Officials report to us what the tallies of those ballots are. There could be republicans, democrats, independents. Its all in there. Their voice is yet to be heard. Lets go to michigan. Okay. Take a look at michigan. What does it look like and whats still outstanding. Okay. The president is in the lead. Now we have not projected this race because because . In part, 1. 6 million. Perhaps more still expected to be counted. Theyve been cast. Elections officials havent reported them. We can go county by county. Im going to pick one. Macomb. In which the president is leading. Still a lot of ballots. We can go to democratic counties and see much the same thing. Tony, back to you and ed at the desk. Eds got his jacket off. And the Shirt Sleeves are rolled up. Of these states were talking about michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, arizona, georgia, North Carolina, is it our understanding in each of these states the counting is still happening . The election workers are still awake and doing their work . They are in wisconsin. Theres a small number doing that in one part of georgia, if i remember correctly, fulton county. In michigan, theyll start that process again and the secretary of state in michigan said theyll have a full, though not necessarily official count but full count by the end of the day today. All right. They are working through the process. In a legal, transparent and visible way. I bring that up because if people are staying with us, they are wondering, are they going to get additional projections this evening. It sounds like the answer is possibly. You should hear more from wisconsin. 5 30, maybe 6 00 a. M. Anthony and major, thank you. Lets go to washington, d. C. , where weijia jiang is following the president s campaign. We just heard from the president where he appears to be prematurely declaring victory and in addition using inflammatory language declaring that a fraud is being perpetrated on the American People because ballot counting, legally cast ballots are still being counted into the evening and into wednesday morning. What are you hearing from the campaign . Are they trying to clean up in any way the president s remarks or are they underscoring them and standing by them . Well, this actually was no surprise. Am ka pain advisers and officials indicated and almost said as much that they believed that they, being democrats, would be trying to steal the election and steal votes away from the president after tonight. And it was remarkable to actually hear the president say those words out loud. He could not have been more blunt. He said we were getting to we were getting ready to win this election. Frankly, we did win this election. Of course, that is simply not true. And we had an indication that he was going to do this tonight because he tweeted a very similar sentiment that was flagged by both twitter and facebook as being misleading. Whats interesting is that he flat out denied he was going to do this. Just yesterday, he pushed back against reports that he was going to declare victory as long as he was ahead. And he said i dont have any reason to play games and that was a false report. He is not ahead. And tonight that is exactly what he did. And so it is a critical moment to see how the president behaves in what he says moving forward. Hes prepared to launch a legal battle. But it is really important for people to understand what he is saying is just flat out wrong. Tony . The votes are still being counted. Its also worth underscoring that the reason there are boarded up buildings in cities all across america is because people are concerned that rhetoric like we just heard from the president and a protracted legal battle which appears to be what we could be headed for, could lead some supporters of both candidates into the streets, and there could be trouble. Weijia, thank you. I want to shift to nikole killion. Former Vice President joe biden spoke to supporters in delaware overnight and expressed optimism about the election outcome. Nikole killion is in wilmington where shes been following the Biden Campaign. Good morning to you. Good morning, tony. What i can tell you is this is the scenario the Biden Campaign was worried about. That the president would try to proclaim victory. And in essence, even before he spoke this evening or this morning in the east room, the Campaign ManagerJen Omalley Dillon told reporters earlier this week that under no scenario will donald trump be allowed to be a victor. And really her point there and im paraphrasing her comments, but the point that she made was that they knew that there would be outstanding ballots and votes to count. And thats in essence the message we heard from the former Vice President earlier this morning where he told his supporters that it aint over until every ballot is counted. And so thats why he is urging patience. Thats why he told his supporters here tonight to keep the faith. Many of them doing just that. I spoke to a number of them who said they are optimistic. They realize this is going to take time but they are hopeful in the outcome. Tony . Thank you very much. Leslie, i want to go to you because you come at this from a republican perspecive. And it was the man who represents your party who just said that he feels hes already won an election that is very much not decided. It is still an outstanding matter who will be the next president of the United States. What did you make of his remarks from the white house a short time ago . I think its a tremendous amount of puffery. To be realistic about it, its about keeping people excited the opportunity is there. The internal numbers from many of these swing states continue to look good for the president so hes feeling optimistic. Its the way he talks about it whether it creates suspicion if hes going to cast doubt on the election results. But i think what hes really trying to say is that hes excited about where the numbers are going to turn out. Jamal, you, as i recall, a native son of michigan, correct . Or is it your father . I am. No, i am, born and raised. Much of this will rest on the wolverine state. Based on what youre seeing, do you believe biden will be able to prevail . I think he will. Ive been looking at some numbers and i had a conversation earlier with an elected official in the state who tells me that they think the numbers in wayne county, particularly in detroit will come in tomorrow and over the next couple of days well count those ballots. And then well be able to see that michigan is going to go into Vice President bidens column. The same thing is probably going to happen in wisconsin. Heres the thing we all have to be very cautious of and worried about. The president very well could win one of these states. Something could happen that we dont predict and what hes doing now is calling into jeopardy the entire integrity of our elections. I think millions of americans, tens of millions of americans, a hundred million americansplus spoke up and said sbhg what they oopt the direction they want for te country, including many of his supporters. And we have to respect the voice they exercised during this process. Leslie, i want to go back to you and get you to respond to something jamal just said. The integrity of our democracy being called into question. You put it its just puffery. Hes trying to keep people interested. Help me close the gap between points of view. Theres a lot of concern and certainly hand wringing on both sides of the aisle. The integrity of the election above all is the most important aspect. The president tends to walk that line. He pushes it even further. Weve got lawyers. Thats the first call im going to make. Theres no doubt if it does become a series of too close to call elections in each of those swing states that it is going to be investigated further to ensure that every vote that should be counted is counted. And so i do think its part of his bravado of the way he talks, but the bottom line is ensuring every vote that should be counted will be counted and the president has to fundamentally live with those results. We are back now at cbs news election headquarters in times square. And one state weve been paying very close attention to all night is the state of georgia. The state has not voted for a democratic president since 1992, and it is now a tossup in our projection. Mark strassmann is in atlanta for us. Mark, good morning to you. Weve been following the vote counting there all evening. What do you know . Good morning. With more than 90 of the vote counted here, President Trump is leading slightly, but the race is still considered too close to call. Democrats had such high hopes of turning georgia blue in 2020, but that is something that is simply not happened. Not happened here in georgia since bill clinton carried this state nearly three decades ago. It could be a few days before actually, 91 of the expected vote is in. President trump leading biden by a narrow 2. 5 . 16 electoral votes are up for grabs here. It could be a couple of days before all the mail votes are counted here in georgia. The demographics have been changing in this state in recent years. Suburbs have become younger, more diverse, less conservative. Early exit polling indicates biden is overwhelmingly capturing the black vote here but trump is overwhelmingly taking the white vote, around 70 . Also leading here, the president with voters who are not college educated. There are also two crucial u. S. Senate seats on the ballot here. Both held by republicans. One is heading for a runoff. One too close to call, although david perdue is leading. Georgias secretary of state has said he expects the winners of most races to be announced later this morning. Tony . Its ed okeefe. Ill take this. One thing that complicated the count in georgia last night it there was a plumbing issue, right . Yeah, at state farm arena where the Atlanta Hawks play. That was a processing and Tabulation Center for absentee ballots. There was a water leak. A pipe leaked this morning. None of the ballots were damaged but that stopped the counting. And about 50,000 uncounted ballots. They sent most of the workers home. A few workers have been working overnight but the sense is theyre probably not going to finish it up until some time this morning. One more little thing that went wrong here. Generally speaking, the day at the polls yesterday worked out great. That is with so much early voting, ed, georgia set records, nearly 4 million folks cast early ballots. The polling itself, the day at the polls went very smoothly. Wait times were 10 or 15 minutes. Very reasonable. Then they ran into issues with the tabulation and here we are, 10 hours after the polls have closed and we still dont have a winner. And very frustrating for republicans and democrats alike. Tony, if you had leaky pipes holding up the 2020 ballot count on your 2020 bingo board, youre doing well. The bingo board for 2020 is large. It folds out many times. Larger than any game board in your house. Mark strassmann, thanks very much. You bring up you opened the door to an interesting conversation. Georgia, i want to underscore for people. Its a state where it appears President Trump has an edge but we have projections that suggest that the trends continue. And i heard Anthony Salvanto talking about this earlier in the broadcast. If the trends continue, biden still has a path there which is why it hasnt been called. It runs through these suburban fastgrowing counties in and around atlanta. We know theres also counting still going on in pennsylvania, right . Right. But we do not have Jericka Duncan so were going to well keep talking. It passes through the key democratic counties and the water does not pass through the pipes. It came out of the pipes so they are delayed. Fulton county, where atlanta is. Gwinnett county, a major suburban Community Just outside atlanta. Cobb county as well. This once put Newt Gingrich in congress has been completely transformed through people moving into the state. Through just demography. Youve seen some of the most competitive congressional races held in that part of the country. Theres a belief among the Biden Campaign and democrats in the state that if it could happen two years ago, if democrats could get elected to congress, why couldnt a democratic president ial candidate play well. The Stacey AbramsGubernatorial Race was very close. In fact, she still maintains she may have won that race. Some irregularities. And she did a tremendous job for the Democratic Party pulling out new voters and pumping things up in that area around atlanta. If joe biden holds on or finds a way to a victory there in georgia, it will be in large part because of what Stacey Abrams did.
