Also gusty winds knocking down large tree branches in San Francisco. This was the scene on 38th avenue. We spotted another tree down on polk street. The rain is a welcome sight after one of the dryest septembers and octobers in recent memory. Meteorologist darren peck is tracking this storm for us. Hi, darren. It looked so good in all those pictures, juliette. In the rain gauges we barely for the a couple hundredths of an inch of rain and if you missed it, you missed it because its over, happened between noon and 4 00 today, but hidef doppler got an up front first row view of happene you could see that inline of entire line of showers going across the bay area and we got pictures of the small hail from the north bay down to the east bay. Watch what happens on the last frame. There it goes and we are done. Were not getting more rain out of that. That system is now finished. Thankfully the wind is letting up. That was the other issue with some of the broken trees we showed you. Current wind speeds now are all single digits. What comes next . The cold air is getting pulled in behind the system. Its been kind of cold the last few nights, but tonight into tomorrow morning is when the cold gets serious and if we look at the current numbers, they arent that bad now. However, the map shows you a frost advisory for the north bay that starts at 3 00 this morning, doesnt expire till 9 00. Some of the sheltered valleys overnight will get down to the upper 20s. Its unclear how much power the president can have in ordering americans to wear face masks, but dr. Schwartzberg said it never should have come to that. Some sad news to report, alex trebek, the legendary jeopardy host, has died at the age of 80. Trebeks reassuring presence was an inspiration and solace for americans for more than 30 decades. He died after a nearly twoyear battle with pancreatic cancer. Canadian born trebek started hosting jeopardy in 1984. He was a master of the format engaging in friendly banter with contestants but moving the game along in a no nonsense fashion whenever people struggled for answers. In march of 2019 he told fans that he had stage four pancreatic cancer, but trebek promised he would not give up and gave his fans updates on his condition. Trebek hosted more than 7,000 episodes of jeopardy. Back in the bay area a dramatic scene, a horseback rider at the right place at the right time to help two men in gliders who had to parachute to the ground. Its not clear what went wrong. One of the men walked away unscathed. The other wasair lifted out by helicopter. Fire crews responded to this scene in oakland around 3 30 this morning at a salvation army. When they arrived, t they found two semi trailers engulfed in flames. The fire is under investigation. The Santa Cruz Beach boardwalk is back in business tonight, but there is a catch. Only Santa Cruz County residents can hop on the rides and reservations are mandatory, but the boardwalk is open to everybody. It got the green light after the county entered the states orange tier. A Tropical Storm slammed through cuba and could become a hurricane before making landfall in the u. S. Here in the bay area strong winds toppled trees in San Francisco. Thats in the presidio. Part of the road there was closed to traffic so crews could clear it all out. A mix of rain and hail in the north bay, video out of marin, which got pounded by that this afternoon. A week ago darren said there would be big changes this weekend and boy, were there. Thanks for pointing that out, too. Were pretty much done with it. We arent getting more rain or hail. The worst wind is over. The snow stopped falling and yes, it snowed on mt. Hamilton. So look at the picture. This is just about 4,000 feet up above santa clara valley. You can see the water of the south bay right there. So san jose, santa clara, all those communities are back here, mt. Hamilton, a long and winding road to get up there, the lick observatory. Thats about 4,000 feet high and the snow is in the hills probably down close to the 3,000foot level, kind of pretty, wont last long and theres no more coming. Ill show you that system here on hidef doppler. This is what it looked like today between about 12 00 this afternoon and 4 00 this afternoon. Pretty impressive band of showers, isolated lightning and small hail. Weve shown you the beautiful pictures people shared from all over the bay area today, but that was the last of it and that line has now left. If you look to the sky, this is our exclusive Vantage Point from the top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel looking north and if we look back down towards the southeast, you get a beautiful view back over the shoulder of the Salesforce Tower and if we go to the top of the Salesforce Tower and look off to the east, you get the clear picture here. Were done. So whats left . All the cold air and thats whats going to be different now. So the system that brought all this in with it, all the cold air is rushing in behind it now and the temperatures on the thermometer dont really reflect the issue. Theres a frost advisory tonight because of this specific to the north bay. You can see the shelter valleyed there going up 101 into napa, shelter valleys meaning you dont get much access from the influence of the bay. You wont get much of a breeze. Temperatures will dip o the 20s. Look at the High Resolution temperatures on here. You get into the deep shades of blue like the valley, santa rosa, petaluma, thats where the coldest air settles to the low spots and sits there. We wont be quite that cold everywhere. Weve got to go down to 30 in santa rosa tonight, but it will only be 35 in san rafael. Its only going to be 46 in the city. Thats what we mean by sheltered valleys. You look at the rest of the bay area and while its going to be cold, concord is going to 35, 34 in livermore, santa rosa will be the coleest coldest the next couple of mornings. By the end of the week weve got another opportunity for rain. Daytime highs tomorrow, thats going into monday and theyll be right around what morning lows used to be, no change in the daytime highs. Heres the next item of interest. Thats the accumulated rainfall for Northern California from thursday afternoon into saturday. Doesnt have to play out exactly this way, but this is our next look ahead now to our next chance of rain. The pattern is staying progressive. In other words, were continuing to see a five or six take period another weak system comes into Northern California and gives us a shot of rain and the best of its going to be up here, but look, weve got a chance here in the city and the more we can put in the sierra, the better it is because thats where one of the major risks for fire weather would be and were really starting to whittle away the fire risk with these systems. We havent got everybody yet with the amount of rain we need, but i think were getting it where it matters most, which is good news.
