Since then, many more people have emailed us with stories of scammers wiping out their bank of america edd account. Reporter somehow fraudsters are able to duplicate that card, get your pin and drain your account in cash from an atm. Continuing to hold. Reporter brett ellington is on hold again trying to get his missing money back. I got paid. Then the next morning, all the money was gone. Reporter in accept, fraudsters stole all the money he had on his bof a card taking it out of an atm in southern california. 553. Thats employing compared to some people. Ive seen thousands taken out. Whether its a dollar or 10,000, its your money. Im the same way. Reporter its becoming an all too familiar story. From the bank of america, 1,000 was drawn four days in a row. You just showed us, weve talked to 11 people who have lost thousands of dollars. Money they desperately need after losing their jobs in the pandemic. It was the little bit of money they did have left that i was saving. And its all i have. Reporter making matters worse, victims tell us they received letters from bank of america just days after filing saying their claim was closed because we believe the account or the claim has been the subject of fraud. Seven people got their money back. Theyre the lucky ones. A spokesperson for the bank tells us that a close claim actually mean its denied. To fight that, you would have to get on the phone again, which can take hours and ask for a review. 19 really believe that bank of america would not be able to handle this more effectively than it has done. And the very fact theres 350,000 people who may be subject to this fraud . And this is bigtime fraud. Reporter linda sherry with consumer action says the long hold times trying to get through to file the claim in the first place are unacceptable. Your call is important to us. This is all very cut and dry in the sense of what the consumer is owed when this happens. The bank would be very wise to create some kind of online portal for reporting the fraud, which would also give the consumer the certainty that they reported this on a certain day, a certain time. And its something to hang their hat on, basically. Its infuriating and its heartbreaking. Reporter assemblyman david shoe says edd and bank of america has not been transparent with the public or lawmakers in sacramento. We deserve answers immediately from edd and bank of america leadership as to whats happening here. Reporter he says if he doesnt get answers soon, heel take legislative action. Fact that these cards didnt have the appropriate antifraud technologies and the typical chip technologies that all of us use in every other context is not acceptable. We need to hold them both accountable. Reporter we asked bank of america why these deb irrelevant cards dont have chips. They referred us to edd, the state agency telling us that providing this Chip Technology is, quote, a rather new offering and it is not included in its current contract with b of a. The district tested more than 1,000 students for covid19. This week kindergarten through second grade students are transitioning to a hybrid learning schedule. It is asking the district to present a set timeline for Elementary Students by december the 8th giving School Leaders an january to release a plan for middle school students.
