We will watch this morning on the investigation into that huge fire that started in a berkeley seven story apartment building. It caused the evacuation of a nearby three story apartment building. Firefighters have been working to put out hot spots that they hadnt been able to reach because of some of the Construction Equipment and the height of the building. Its seven stories causing them problems. Today they will remove some of the harder parts of the structure to continue their investigation. That will mean they will likely need to evacuate some of the nearby buildings. Certainly an inconvenience for those people along university avenue. We have no idea of the cause right now of that fire. As we have been reporting over the last ten years or so there have been a series of fires in buildings under construction. Specifically housing in the east bay. We will watch that. Back to you. Troubling new coronavirus numbers. Days before thanksgiving, new cases statewide have tripled in the past month. We discovered fixing the damage may make it worse. We go to the sinking sidewalk and San Franciscos mission bay. In San Franciscos mission bay neighborhood, there is a place where the sidewalk ends. Looks like theres something wrong obviously with the settling. And again. Someone needs to fix it. And again. Either the sidewalks are sinking or the buildings going up. The sidewalks here are sinking. You can see the gaps at just about every single street corner. They are can be more complex than just putting cement. Rachel gordon said this problem was predicted when the neighborhood was built. Mission bay is built on landfill. We knew at the going in when this was being developed it used to be old railyards and its made on landfill. Its up to the Building Owner to foot the bill to shore up the sidewalk. I always joked its like venice because, you know, it really could just be water around all these buildings. Jennifer smith dolan is the Vice President of operations and said long term the nonprofit cannot afford to continue to pay for this. The fix and the amount of money we have available to make the fix is not going to add up. She worries the constant fixes could hurt the cafe next door. Put all of this on our retail tenants who are already struggling in a really difficult market and adding one other hurdle is devastating. The street is pushing town and pulling the sidewalk. Larry carp studied the sinking of the millennial tower which sunk 18 inches. He said the structures are more secure. They were built to bedrock and still the main bay outlet for all the cities underground streams. Everything is setling. The buildings arent. The buildings are okay . Yeah. Yeah. They are fine. The buildings are designed to with stand an earthquake but the sidewalks and streets arent. Carp said the ground is sinking faster than predicted and that every time a Building Owner fixes the problem they are likely making it worse, repaving makes the ground heavier causing them to sink faster. Its a difficult process to fix things because when you do it just starts all over again. City records show call for repairs are increasing. Last year 59 sites were identified by the city as needing repairs. Compare that to around 10 sites, ten years ago. Most havent been completed. Its an expensive problem. One that isnt going away and for the nonprofit, its a bit unsettling. Anything thats take away from, you know, providing Affordable Housing is always a little disappointing. The sidewalks here are sinking about a quarter inch a year and this is about a three by four square foot. Sidewalk. A three by three foot space. Thats going to cost you about 217 for the city to take care of. You can see on a big block like this, that can add up. Kpix5. And keep sending your stories and ideas to project home and see all of the reporting on the website. Time now is 5 09. Holiday travel in full swing despite warnings to stay home. The National Average for a gallon of unleaded is down about 48cents from this time last year. While Many Americans are still planning to travel despite warnings to stay home, there will be fewer people on the roads and you spoke to aaa about what we can expect. I did. This Holiday Travel season is going to look very difficult this year with Public Health officials urging people to stay home and according to aaa they expect to see at least a 13 drop in travel statewide. Thats compared to 2019. What does that mean for people who decide to travel . We could see busy roadways this week despite the recent Health Recommendations to stay home. I spoke to sergio and he said that travelers will opt to drive since it offers more flexibility. Theres a sort of wait and see approach, you know as people kind of gau ge whats going on. Look at their level of risk. That is the type of trend that we have been noticing. As far as taking road trips of course that will be what is most used for the thanksgiving holiday. About 92 of people are expected to take a road trip. Really it gives travelers just more sense of comfort that they will be traveling in their own vehicle. Had a few recommendations for those that decide to travel and how to stay safe. The number one thing you can do is if you havent been driving your vehicle as much as you used to make sure its serviced, make sure you have a mechanic. The other thing we are advising travelers to do if they feel comfortable traveling is to research your destination depending on if thats a hotel or maybe you are visiting family. There are different restrictions. Different things are happening. We encourage travelers to do their research, find out exactly what is going on in their destination. That way they can prepare for that situation. Its a good idea to limit your stops when traveling by car, to pack food and snacks or go through a drive through instead of sitting down at a restaurant to eat this will help limit your exposure. We posted this up on twitter. We are curious about your travel plans. Feel free to chime in. We would love to know what you are doing. Its not bad but the pass, already busy. Westbound 580. You have a few brake lights as you work away from tracy. Getting in to the pass area. Slow and go conditions there. Pretty much the usual stuff. If you normally take that ride over toward north flynn you know what to expect. The travel times slow and go. We are starting to see the brake lights forming. The usual stuff on 84. Just a little sluggish. Keep that in mind if you are going toward the grade. As we take a look at the travel times, westbound 580. Thats a 31 minute drive time. The rest of the major freeways are in the groan which means good travel conditions. Highway 4 and 101. Taking a look at conditions in the south bay. We are at the limit for the most part as you work northbound 101 out of southbound san jose toward the peninsula and no metering lights at the bay bridge toll plaza. Traffic is quiet as you head out of oakland, emoryville, into San Francisco, clear on the east shore freeway and everything quiet on 580 through oakland. Its 5 18. Thats a look at your morning ride and no clouds to add the extra layer. Yeah. I was looking at all your cameras that you showed. They all looked better than yesterday. I have a few too. You will see its much clearer. That means colder this morning. I have one issue i want to spotlight and it has to do with looking at the roads again. Everybody is doing okay but for one spot. Napa. We have one little patch here where we have developed perhaps some fog on the roadway up here. Visibility down to three quarters of a mile. Those sheltered north bay valleys and even though from our camera on top of the Sales Force Tower we have a front row seat to a patch of marine layer. Its very isolated. Just one little patch. Everybody else is looking at clear skies like dublin. Looking out over dublin. Its clear there. Its clear in san jose as well. Now, that means its cold. If we put numbers on this its 38 degrees. You need to look for the change is down here. San jose is 42. Its about 10 to 11 degrees colder. Livermore 39. Its 42 in fairfield. All of those places are colder. This is typical. Yesterday was weird. Today are you back to grabbing the jacket and prepare for number that are kind of cold. Just to show you what happens. If its in the mid30ss in santa rose a. One of our cool spots we are going to get colder. Look back toward thanksgiving and into the weekend. An average would be 39 for the morning low. We are not even getting there for the next few days. Its the holiday thursday and then going into the weekend when the mornings are going to get colder. Probably some frost advisories toward saturday and sunday. Maybe seen freeze warnings. As far as daytime highs these are fantastic. Upper 60s. We will be two degrees shy of 70 in vallejo. Are you going to 68. Itll be 70. We will go to 66 in san jose and 67 in santa rosa. As far as thanksgiving the numbers are the same. We will be in the mid to upper 60s for the daytime highs and you can see that in the seven day forecast. Sunshine across the whole thing. The clouds will increase by sunday and monday.
