The fbi says 200 Human Trafficking victims were identified and rescued as part of a nationwide effort involving hundreds of Law Enforcement agencies and nearly 200 suspects were identified or arrested. Here in the bay area, 29 local agencies joined the fbi last month in the twoweek operation. 21 trafficking victims were rescued, including four children. And they arrested nine suspects. Now local officials are focused on getting survivors whatever support they need. Our Service Providers do offer that long term response. Were looking that the as a multiyear effort. You know, sometimes lifelong. Some of the victims are from this area, but others were trafficked here from other states or even other countries. This year marks the 13th nationwide version of operation crosscountry and the fbi says it actually started in the bay area. Cleanup will take some time in San Franciscos hays valley where a fouralarm fire destroyed a building under construction. This is video when that building went up in flames yesterday. The fire ripped down scaffolding, even cracked windows across the street. No one was hurt, but eight people lost a place to live. Investigators are still not sure how the fire started. Turning to weather now, an unusually cool summer day across much of the bay area, but thats about to change and fast. First alert meteorologist paul heggen is tracking the return of the heat. So we need to enjoy this nice weather. Below average temperatures today, another day of this tomorrow and then the heat starts to build heading into the weekend. The heatwaves have all been over the weekends throughout the summer so far, but at least theyve been brief. Right now the sun has finally broken through over downtown San Francisco, took most of the day for that to happen. Enjoy it because the clouds and fog will push back across the city and bay and most of us will wake up with gray skies early thursday morning. Temperatures right now, this does not look like an early august temperature map, upper 50s along the coast, typical this time of year, but only 60 in San Francisco and mid60s for oakland and hayward, inland temperatures mostly 70s, fairfield 80 degrees. A lot of times this time of year we have widespread temperatures in the low 100s. Well be another 5 to 10 degrees below average tomorrow, 60s around the bay with 70s to around 80degree highs farther inland, but we return to near average on friday and the above average temperatures are back in the forecast by saturday. Well detail the full forecast in a few minutes. Thanks, paul. All across the bay area local leaders are trying to figure out how to address the skyrocketing number of offices sitting empty. The bay areas biggest city is no exception. San joses vacancy rate just hit another record high. Our devin fehely has a look at how that could shape the citys future. Reporter we have talked a lot about what a post Pandemic Recovery would look like, especially for downtown areas. Downtown san jose is struggling much like San Francisco. The reality is fewer people are coming to downtown san jose to work monday through friday. There is the ever widening fallout for the businesses that have always counted on that foot traffic. For cafe eden in downtown san jose, the pandemic took a big bite out of their business and the post Pandemic Recovery has been anything but paradise. The traffic coming back into downtown have not really revived yet. Reporter Office Vacancy rates in downtown san jose are at historic highs. Nearly 30 of the Second Quarter of this year according to cushman and wakefield and the problem is even more pronounced in the area near the airport with a vacancy rate of a jaw dropping 42 . A lot of companies are not fully staffed here. Around us we have few buildings that are vacant, unoccupied and the foot traffic in the city is a lot less than before. Reporter russell hancock, ceo of joint venture silicon valley, says while cities have been scrambling to find ways to lure businesses and Business People back downtown, it seems increasingly likely that the work from home trend is here to stay. Downtowns right now are asking how can we get our workers back and how can we recover our downtowns . Thats probably the wrong question. Downtowns probably need to be saying given our new reality, what should our strategy be to reshape this downtown, reinvent it, make it something completely different . Reporter that seemingly permanent shift to work from home may be to the detriment of businesses like cafe eden, but to the benefit of others like jack holders, which is located further from the Downtown Core and closer to a neighborhood where people live and increasingly work. We have had a lot of our regulars, i mean continue to support us through the pandemic, through all the lockdowns and really be excited after the lockdowns, i think come and support us after. Reporter back at cafe eden theyre just trying to hold, on struggling in the absence of that all important ingredient to any successful business, customers. We have to see where the futures going to take us. We dont know yet. Reporter so theres a lot of uncertainty. Yes, theres a lot of uncertainty in the business, yes. Reporter there is still a sense of optimism, however tenuous, amongst the businesses that we spoke to, but many say they cant look too far into the future, months or years. They say their success is measured on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. The vacancy reached 18. 2 . I left my heart in San Francisco. What a perfect way to celebrate the 150th anniversary of San Franciscos first cable car. Former House Speaker pelosi and mayor breed and other Community Leaders helping mark the occasion. Nothing exemplifies both creativity and technology, but also civility and joy at the same time better than San Franciscos cable cars. The city now offering a number of special tours and exhibits to celebrate 150 years of cable cars. One notable absence this morning was senator dianne feinstein. Her spokesperson says she wasnt feeling very well. Several of todays speakers, including pelosi, credit feinstein with saving the cable cars during her time as San Franciscos mayor. She secured millions of dollars in federal funding for those cars. Earlier this year feinstein did suffer serious complications after contracting shingles. She spent three months recovering away from capitol hill. Breaking news out of contra costa county, mandatory evacuations are in place for a part of san pablo as authorities deal with the hazmat situation. Evacuations have been ordered for people in that area between giant road, miner avenue, 11th street and palmer avenue. Authorities have brought in special equipment to examine containers that have been found in a shed behind a home. It was a Hazardous Material incident, initially came in as a gas leak. Once initial fire crews arrived on scene, they made entry and noticed they had a lot of containers in various conditions in the back shed of a residence. Once they identified a couple of those, they did some research with the homeowner and found out they were indeed Hazardous Materials and initiated a Hazardous Materials response from our district as well as county hazmat. Still no word what exactly was in those containers, but authorities are telling neighbors they could be out of their homes up to 24 hours. Evacuees can shelter at Contra Costa Community gym. Well have more on this story as breaking news comes into our newsroom. Philz coffee announced plans to close their original location in the mission after 20 years. The condition says they decided not to renew their lease at the corner of 24th and folsom streets which they have occupied since 2003. Their final day will be monday, october 16th. Saying in a statement, though the physical space may close its doors, the mission will always hold a special place in our hearts as our first home where philz coffee was born and nurtured. All eligible employees will be offered jobs at their 12 other locations across the city. In san jose a colorful new look for mcdonalds new restaurant, a new mural by a local artist unveiled today at the mcdonalds on story road and the mural is called patterns of nature and its part of a celebration of latino art and music. The painter says the work is inspired by mexican folklore mixed with various hispanic cultures in the local neighborhoods. Cova, as hes known, says he hopes having his art on the side of mcdonalds will expose it to local kids who may not get a chance to see it otherwise. Trying to incorporate the elements from the spanish cultures. I am using like principle elements from the different hispanic cultures. This is the result in the end. This is one of several mcdonalds across the country featuring local artists celebrating their unique cultural backgrounds. Still ahead, a touching tribute to actor angus mccloud, how artists in his hometown of oakland are reacting to his shocking death. I hope people that knew angus or were affected by him bring something positive away. A wildfire burning in the Mojave Desert has become the largest in california this year, why the Environmental Impact could be devastating. A north bay physical therapist is helping parkinsons patients live life to their fullest. Find out how coming up. Take a look at this. A local artist painted this mural honoring actor angus mccloud. The oakland native died this week at just 25 years old. The artist knew cloud in passing and wanted to paint him smiling. It was really touching. I hope people that knew angus or were affected by him bring something positive away from this wall. Some people have already left flowers, candles and other items in front of the mural. The artist is encouraging others to come by and pay tribute any way they can. Cloud was best known for his role as fez in hbos euphoria. He never acted professionally before the show. Clouds family noted that cloud had been struggling with the recent loss of his father. The heatwave in arizona now threatening the Bee Population and it could have devastating consequences. Beekeepers say the historic heatwave is melting hives killing off many of the bees. The high temperatures are also impacting nectar and pollen, a main source of food for those honeybees. They collapse and oftentimes the queen can be crushed and if that happens, then theres no other bee there that can replace her. Theres no other bees that can lay eggs. So the colony will just die. Meanwhile the york fire burning in the Mojave Desert is putting the iconic joshua trees in danger. This fire is now californias largest this year burning more than 80,000 acres. Thats an area the size of fremont and San Francisco combined. It is just 23 contained. Were probably going to lose hundreds of thousands of joshua trees. This is pretty devastating. It will grow back, but it might take decades to see this desert come back. Paul, i know were getting ready for our own warmup this weekend, but nothing like the rest of the country. It kind of builds in and goes away, doesnt last more than about 48 hours. This weekend, about 48 hours of inland heat and along the coast, yeah, liz doesnt get out of the fog that easily, not yet. Its going to have to be really unusual for me to get out of the fog. Got to wait till labor day, fingers crossed. Plenty of fog and even drizzle. The Golden Gate Bridge is still stocked in. The fog will spread well across the bay by early thursday morning, one more cool day tomorrow, return to near normal friday and then inland heat is back saturday and especially sunday. Thats the peak of this next little warm spell. We are back down to near normal temperatures monday. You can see the progression over the next ten days, the roller coaster ride for concord, below average tomorrow, almost exactly normal friday, hot this weekend and then back to very close to whats typical for early august, tuesday all the way into the second weekend of august. If you can get through the heat this weekend, well be okay. In terms of air quality, we had a few yellow dots on the map today, but in general in good shape. The fire from oregon has sent out a few more waves, looks like some of that could make its way to our skies tomorrow, especially golden gate northward along the coast. Looks like that thins out and the next wave of smoke maybe stays out over the ocean friday, pretty good air quality the end of the workweek, but as the heat builds saturday and sunday, that type of weather setup tends to trap ground level pollution. That might deteriorate our air quality. Some sunshine now. It wont take long for the fog to take over again. 61 in San Francisco, 3 degrees warmer across the bay and inland temperatures in the 70s, the warmest spots around 80 degrees this afternoon. Enjoy this while it lasts. If youre heading out to the giants game, layer up. The diamondbacks are not going to feel at home. Its not snake weather or desert weather, temperatures around 60 at game time and backing down into the 50s as we head through the rest of tonight. The fog will will be widespread to start the day thursday and along the coast youre stuck in the gray once more. Temperatures tonight into the 50s across the board, highs tomorrow that 5 to 10 degrees below what is normal for this time of year, right around 60 along the coast, a mix of upper 60s and low 70s down the peninsula and south end of the bay, mid to upper 70s for most of the santa clara valley, maybe around 80 for morgan hill and gilroy, a mix of 70s and 80s inland and the east bay, 70s in the trivalley, low 80s in the delta. We can handle that in august. Low 60s in San Francisco, mid to upper 60s for oakland, mid to upper 70s most of the north bay until farther inland its warmer, but even spots in lake county that are typically around 100 degrees are right around 90. Temperatures peak this weekend, not much of a peak in San Francisco and oakland and actually the sevenday forecast hasnt updated. Everything is offset by a day. I will kick the computer during the next commercial break. Generally, the same pattern, just everything offset one day. Thats how you know its live tv because if this was recorded, we would just start over. You made it work anyway. Its going to get hot. Theres your headline. Thanks, paul.
