She was taken to the hospital briefly to get checked out and everything came back just fine. The 90yearold senator has struggled with several Health Issues over the last year. She was away from the capitol for three months recovering from complications all related to shingles. All this has strengthened calls her to resign, confirming she will not run for reelection in 2024 but has stood firm that she would finish out her current term. California representatives adam schiff, katie porter and barbara lee all running to replace her next fall. Now to a developing story out of hawaii where people are jumping into the ocean to escape wildfires. This is a look at the building on fire in maui. Local officials and the coast guard say 12 people were rescued in maui county after jumping into the ocean to escape the smoke. The buyers are being fueled by strong winds from incoming hurricane dora. That hurricane bringing wind gusts up to 80 Miles Per Hour to the big island. 911 services and communications are down because of toppled cell towers and landmines. Our Hospital System on maui, they are overburdened with burn patients. People are suffering from inhalation. We are already in communication with other Hospital Systems about relieving the burden. The reality is that we need to fly people out of maui to give them burn support because maui hospital cannot do extensive burn treatment. Nearly 20 of mauis population is out of power and state officials are calling on the white house to declare a federal emergency. We have a station on maui with the latest on the winds and flights leaving the island. Here is Chelsea Davis with the latest. Reporter police have the roads shut down. They are only letting First Responders through. All morning long, i have seen several First Responders leaving the west side. You can go in unless you are an official or first responder. The wind in the last 30 minutes seems to be dying down just a little. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I dont want to jinx it or speak to soon but it has been whipping all morning long. Just recently, it seems a little calmer at least right now. In terms of the airport, i spoke with the airport manager this morning and he said thousands of people were at the airport because of either a flight cancellation, flight delays or people trying to get out of maui sooner. If you are one of those people who has lights to honolulu and want to leave sooner than planned, he is asking you to call hawaiian airlines. They do have additional flights and additional seats. Bay area celebrity chef martin yan was on hand for a ribboncutting. The lantern is a symbol of life , a symbol of celebration, a symbol of happiness. Reporter after the iconic lanterns were destroyed by hail, heavy rain and strong winds this year, the Chinatown Merchants Association and the nonprofit launched a fundraising effort for three blocks of new lanterns on grand avenue. Many of the lanterns were torn and faded. The community raised 25,000. Alaska airlines matched an additional 20,000 in donation. First of all, it gives color. Gives energy. Everything is red. Gives life to chinatown. Line dancers performed. Supervisor aaron haskin was among the Community Leaders who attended. It has been the subject of racism and the people have been resilient. It has been the subject of a pandemic and the people have been resilient. Chinatown has never gone away but it is back. Reporter the lanterns dont just beautify the neighborhood. Community members say they had an extra layer of safety. When the lanterns were down, there was more crime. People feel safer with the streets lit up. The elders have expressed they feel safer. Reporter the Chinatown Merchants Association says the lanterns also help enhance Security Camera video at night. The new lanterns are also better secured to various properties. He first started coming to chinatown when he taught a cooking class as a student at uc davis. I bring students to chinatown to dim sum and take them to golden gate Fortune Cookie place. He hopes new editions will bring more traffic to the historic neighborhood he loves. You can eat, shop, drink. You can do anything. It is a wonderful place. Everything here is delicious.
