Burning beneath some of that debris in that very large pile. We have been watching that excovator go and taking piles of burning debris and moving them. They have a plan here. They are going to be on the scene much of the evening. The real concern right now is what is in the smoke that we are seeing . People are reporting smelling that, of course, all over the east bay as well as on the bay and just across the bay in San Francisco. It is really nasty. We have not heard from bay Area Management district what it might be and what concerns there might be. We talked with the fire captain half an hour ago. He said hazmat teams have not been on the scene. So, he was not sure exactly what we were talking about either. Here is the clip from that conversation. Anybody within, i would say, half a mile should take appropriate precautions. Staying away from the area if you can. You know, dont venture down to sacramento square where the smoke will be the most intense and, and, you know, anybody again living within half a mile to a mile would do well to close their windows until the smoke dissipates. This is the video they was referring to earlier. No it is not. Where they were moving the burning piles of debris. Again, trying to get to the source of the fire there. We know that this has been the scene of at least one significant fire back in 2018. At that point the bay area air Quality Management district fined the company for that fire and for the pollution that was kicked off with all of the smoke that we are seeing over again. A lot of the companies are tasked with trying to do what they can to prevent and mitigate fires like this because of the concern, the concern that it can pose to the quality of the air if there were to be a fire like this. A lot of them are supposed to take inventory of the materials they have should there be an emergency like this. Hazmat was not immediately dispatched but they said they were on the way, perhaps out of precaution that would be the oakland fire team. You mentioned the San Francisco fireboats to come and help out. That expensive floating Fire Department station along the embarcadero where they have multiple fireboats at the ready to respond to emergencies in the bay that could be a mutual aid for them there. Obviously it makes sense to grab the water from the bay, you know, rather than the hydrant and they can come at it at a different angle from the seaside. This is something that you are going to want to get all resources on before more of the smoke can escape. I think the concern here is that even if they are to get a bunch of water on this as you mentioned sometimes the fires ignite from the bottom of the pile. Some of the materials burn very, very hot. They make it really difficult to put out no matter how you slice and dice it. It could be putting up smoke in the area. I am hoping we will hear something from bay area air quality district about potential air monitor figure that is in the cards or information for people who are downwind of there and paul, he is the one joining us now from the studio to tell us about wind direction. Paul it looks like it is blowing east. Yes. Northwest to the southeast. The wind is blowing it parallel to the bay shore. Blowing it towards alameda and Oakland International airport. Lets go over to the wall here i have similar perspective loaded up here that we have been seeing along with footage behind me. The volume of smoke produced by there is impressive. We see it with the recycling fires. It is a Metal Recycling facility the stuff that comprises the metals it is far down the periodic table. It is not what you want to breathe. Take a look at our wind speed. It is at the Oakland Airport that is a little down the shore from the port of oakland, down the shore from alameda as well. The wind gusts, stronger, 33 miles an hour. That is sat the Oakland Airport. Right on the water. They are producing or reporting five to 10 mileanhour winds, gusts, 15 miles an hour. Not as strong. Something we have to monitor because the bay area microclimate will shift on a mild by mild basis. The purple air has been registering a change in air quality over the past 1520 minutes the epa sensors is still reporting good air quality. False especially downwind of where the fire is happening. Track a plume of smoke going. We had a twitter of the black smoke. Unhealthy for sensitive groups, the deeper the orange we are trending towards unhealthy. If the smoke is blow anything where close to your neighborhood, good idea to shut all of your windows, shut the doors, shove a towel at the bottom. Avoid breathing any of the stuff that is in the atmosphere because of the fire. Different perspective looking from pg e cameras and just all of the smoke. Again, nasty stuff that is burning and ejected into the lowest levels of the atmosphere. Does not stay up there long stays near ground level. Anyone downwind will be forced to breathe. We will continue to monitor it and return it to the sales force. Due east, port of oakland, you can see the smoke rising up and blowing that way. It is is along the coast in the general direction of alameda and Oakland International airport. We will keep an eye on the air quality map. I will refresh the map there for a second and give you the latest readings. I am really looking forward to what results of air monitoring might happen there. Folks my be wondering that. It is ours, too. It will just continue because of the amount of mostly cloudy. Just want to return to the live pictures and thank ann, two different perspectives here. Live pictures from the helicopter and another tower camera shot to give you the full breath of how much smoke this fire is putting out. I imagine at this point you can see it from many parts of the bay area not just the east bay and San Francisco on the righthand side of your screen you see they are removing some of the material to create space for firefighters to reach any fires that might be burning on the under side of this pile at this recycling facility at the port of oakland. We did hear a few minutes ago firefighters with oakland fire who are now receiving mutual aid from alameda fire and potentially from San FranciscoFire Department if they choose to send boats out that way. They said they would expeoples exhibit toking out here for hours and hours. The recycling fires are stubborn to put out pause of the vol am, the density of the material, and the heat. We are working here at cbs area news to be responsible and check on the air so we can pass on the information. The most useful is if you are downwind of this. It is best to stay inside, shut your doors, take precautions as we work to figure out what exactly is burning there. It is breaking news. It broke 30 to 40 minutes ago. We will keep our eye on it. Now, we turn to another story, maui, looking like this, multiple windwhipped fires tear through maui. A bit of relief from the firefighters with the winds starting to die down. Really, the damage has been done their. Communities reduced to rubble. At least six people have died. Flames went through front street, they are gone, some of the buildings dating back to the 1700s are badly damaged. Among them, the Public Library t. Is effecting a lot of people, too. Thousand his to evacuate at a moments notice. Among them a bay area family that was visiting the island. We have their story. I am here at San FranciscoInternational Airport because there are many bay area residents impacted by the fires in maui. We talked to a family who is there who had to camp at a parking lot while they wait for their flight back to San Francisco. Reporter what started as a dream vacation for this family in maui ended up a nightmare on the west side of maui. We have plenty of food. We made a trip to costco as we came into maui. We are set with water, food, utensils, we were ready. Reporter that is because daniel and his wife and three daughters followed the Evacuation Order issued by their hotel. They are among 4,000 tourists forced to evacuate due to the intense fire conditions. And unfortunately not everyone was, some stranded, some did not have supplies. As usual stores ran out of water, ran out of supplies. And then early this morning at about 4 00, the hotel staff issued a recommend to evacuate for a before the mandatory evacuation came. We ended up going to north back to the airport where we are now. The fires have been made worse by strong winds by hurricane dora. A i category 4 storm that is currently moving south of the island chain. For sandra, it feels personal. My grandfather was 100 native hawaiian. So it is very personal for me especially because i feel like the island is really taking a hit. To lose intrtroducing totogos new frech h dip sandwiwiches. Not unusual for this kind of scrap metal fires, oakland fire is out there working with alameda fire, with a fireboat there, trying to put water on this. They were quite clear when we spoke to them about 15 minutes ago that this one is going to be burning for awhile. I want to bring in paul hagan. The question, the first question that i had. That is the slot that shows you. The plume, it has not gotten smaller, but the first question that i have and the first one you our viewers have, is the air safe to breathe . I would not count on it honestly. We are seeing that from the purple sensors. They do not operate frequently enough. We have the purple air data in a second t. Is going down. Again, a Metal Recycling facility. That stuff that is farther down the periodic table it takes more energy to make that stuff combust and once it is in the atmosphere that is really just nasty stuff once it is, you know, breathable. You do not want to breathe that. Especially when you are talking about, look at the volume of smoke it is putting out. You can see it. Jack lemon square would be behind this. Offices, apartments. It is blowing along the shore, but, yeah, it will be a problem. Anywhere half a mile i would stretch it to a mile, mile and a half. Shut the windows and minimize the air. Go some place needless if you have the option, for those in this area it is not good. We are anticipating them to give us an indication of what they are doing, we have epa sensors and private industry to do that. And what is in the plume . Right. Important information. Lets take a look at a different perspective. Video loaded up some of the alert california cameras. You get an idea of the size of the source as it goes downwind. I will give you a view of a camera that is farther inland. There is the view right now from grizzly peak. You may say, okay, not seeing a lot here. It is this that is the smoke plume as it reaches down the bay shore that is the big concern with the amount of smoke produced by the fire. The wind is the northwest, blowing it along the northshore. The wind measured at the airport that is separated from the port of oakland. Winds are strong to push the smoke down the shore fairly great distance. Here is the latest update from the purple air sensors these are not the official epa sensors, they are more sensitive, heighten the way things look but they give us a minute by minute air quality. You can see, this dot that is directly downwind of the port of oakland registering unhealthy air quality levels. We are seeing those a little to the north as well around berkeley. Some of the stuff is picking up towards the down shore, down towards san leandro. People smelling smoke if not already experiencing symptoms of the smoke if it is headaches or nausea. It is not stuff you want to breathe. Close the windows, reduce the air making its way from outside to inside of your house, apartment, wherever it is that you are watching us from. This is just not something that we will not want to take chances with. It is possible that we will not have impacts other than a headache and nausea. If you are already experiencing that, odds are something more nasty than what we would hope is the best case scenario. Again, one more view from the sales force camera. Getting a ton of smoke that is produced by the source of the fire. We are zoomed in for a close look. The Wider Perspective is looking at the smoke well down the coast on the eastern side of the bay. Quick perspective of what is happening weatherwise for the rest of the region, the rest of the week. We will see the same weather pattern shaping up on thursday. Shaping up with the clouds from what is left from eugene. Not likely to get dry thunderstorms around the bay ar. Ll keep an eye on, just in case this is fog not smoke. The temperatures right now in the 60s, the 70s, even 50s in downtown San Francisco. Temperatures cooling off rapidly as we look into the rest of tonight, around 60, another day of slightly below average temperatures tomorrow. Topping off a mix of 70s. With the warmest spots, middle 80s below what is normal for this time of the year. A quick check of the sevenday forecast. Temperatures warming up, heading through the weekend, pleasantly warm, oakland, mostly in the 70s heading into the first half of next week. Farther inland, no heat in the forecast. Even once we settle into slightly above average temperature pattern. That is the second lafl of the weekend and the first half of next week. Hot spots, staying a glow at 100 degrees. Along the coast staying in the 60s. Another perspective there is grizzly peak. I will switch back to the view here from the Science Center and you can see, again, the amount of smoke produced around the source of the fire there. Apparently it is not inside of port of Oakland Property but next to it. Next to the bay. Oakland fire has been fighting this one from the ground and from the water with the limited partner of an alameda fireboat. There is a scrap metal yard. They expect the fire will be burning for quite. We are go g announcer its time to play family feud. Give it up for steve harvey. Steve i appreciate yall. Appreciate yall. Thank you.
