Shawn . Amanda a large fire in oakland started last night. Continues this morning. And now there are concerns about the air quality. Well have a live report coming up. And here in the Weather Center continue to track that air quality all morning long. Throughout areas like benicia and vallejo and even down into west oakland where theyre all being impacted with poor air quality this morning. More on that coming up. And as you hit the roadways we have a Traffic Alert along 101. Plus brake lights already building at the bay bridge. And a little misty out there on the freeways, more on that coming right up. But first, right now firefighters in hawaii are battling wildfires on the island of maui. The confirmed number of People Killed jumped over night. That figure now stands at 36. The worst damage is in the Historic Town of lahaina. Entire neighborhoods are just completely destroyed. Oh my gosh. Look at the harbor. Well, look at this view from a private helicopter provides a smoky view of the scope of the destruction. The flames were fueled by strong winds from a hurricane that passed well south of the Hawaiian Islands. Thousands of people ran for shelter and some even jumped into the ocean in a desperate attempt to escape that fire. Shes not even the worst of it. Still get dead bodies in the water. Floating. And on the seawall. Weve been pulling people out since last night, trying to save peoples lives. Were still trying to assess the amount of damage, but the road to recovery will be long. Just absolutely horrific what were seeing from there. Shelters packed with residents who have nowhere else to go and were learning this morning that San Francisco mayor london breed is among the tourists who had to evacuate that island. Thats according to the chronicle. Coming up in just a few minutes, we hear from a bay area family still stranded on maui. A live look at oakland now. That fire still burning near the citys port just look at that right there. And from what we know, people even in neighboring cant escape the smell from this one. The flamat 6 00 p. M. On schnitzer steel. They added that it was under control just before 10 00 p. M. But cheerily smoke still affecting many people. Shawn chitnis live at the alameda ferry where many commuters are waking up to the plumes and also the smell, shawn. What do you see . Reporter well, as commuters coming by to catch one of the first ferries here, they are certainly taken aback by what they see over my shoulder. Some of them did smell it and others have not but as we continue to monitor the conditions here, i will say that it seems as if the flames have gotten smaller. Harder to tell though because the smoke is still so thick. And driving through oakland to get to this location, i could certainly smell the smoke inside my car. And that is really the key indication that Agency Officials want people to think about as they go about their day today. If you can smell the smoke, they say that is enough reason for to you stay indoors and close your doors and windows while we are trying to get through this. We also want to show you a little bit of the scene last night. Thats when people were first noticing this in oakland and again, people smelling it right away. Even indoors and part of the response that continues today is the heavy equipment that is helping firefighters to try to get ahold of the fire. Its coming from ha mountain of scrap metal at schnitzer steel. This is near the oakland port and again starting around wednesday afternoon, people who were out in the evening last night at Jack London Square, they said they also noticed the smell of smoke inside a restaurant. When we came in, they didnt tell us that it was smoke or anything. And they didnt mention it. And the only time we noticed it is when we saw it. And smelled it. And the people in back of us told us that it had been going on all afternoon. Reporter so we know that a hazmat team was called by the Oakland Fire Department. Part of their response still waiting to get the update on how thats going. But of course that air quality advisory remains and part of the challenge that we know firefighters are facing and have been facing since last night is moving around the debris that is at the source of this fire. So they can get to where that fire started. That is likely why it is taking them so long to put this fire out. Amanda, back to you. Obviously very complicated one here. All right, shawn. Thank you so much for that live report. Well stay on this throughout this morning. And lets take a look at what people are saying on social media here. Con fire pio saying smoke from the fire at schnitzer steel at oakland port has drifted into contra costa county. Please do not call 911 due to the smoke. Checout another tweet that we are seeing. This is from tiskawho else in the bay area smells smoke from oakland . We have folks in Castro Valley and pleasanton reporting that they do. Definitely let us know if you are smelling it where you live. And howie, smells like burned rubber and niles, is that a result from the fire in oakland . Thats a question for our meteorologist because you are checking out the air quality in what people are experiencing here in the bay area. I mean whats interesting too is the winds are light this morning. As are most mornings here in the bay. But its still whipping that smoke and that pm 2. 5 up into the atmosphere and over into areas like benicia and even vallejo. Actually take the air quality map and zoom into local areas just off into the east bay. Oakland, west oakland, even up into berkeley thats where were seeing the worst air walt this morning. Its kind of ranging jump up into the east inland hills too. This is going to continue to sweep up into the Carquinez Strait area, also seeing a little bit of a pocket closer to areas like vallejo and benicia. Dealing with not the best air quality this morning. Think of the local areas. This is what werement anding just around 1 00. That onshore flow getting up to around 20mileperhour wind gusts. Lets take it back to the temperatures though. Daytime highs today are going to stay rightaround average for most of us. A cool and cloudy start and San Francisco not reporting right now out of sfo but were in the upper 50s in San Francisco and a very similar trend near san jose and oakland already at 61. Notice those clouds sitting over San Francisco right. That marine layer is really dense for us this morning along our coast even stretching its way out into the east bay this morning too. Were going to see just a little bit of coastal drizzle not a lot. Less than 0. 01 jazzbo the evening hours tonight. Along areas like halfmoon bay and San Francisco and even up into the north bay too. Mostly streamlined just along our coast. But we are going to continue to see these cloudy skies into the evening hours tonight with low 60s in the bay. And 80s off in the east inland hills and more on that coming up in a bit. Gianna . All right, thank you. Taking a look at the roadways right now. Planning on making the ride through Mountain View. A Traffic Alert still in effect this morning. This is south 101 connecting on to 85. The hov lane is shut down and its been closed for several hours now. This is due to a deadly crash and it happened overnight and still a lot going on in and around the area. Were starting to see a few brake lights on the connector road. Taking 101 past that point, traffic is moving along pretty well. The rest of the way through the peninsula. Bay bridge, metering lights are on and its starting to back up just a little bit at least tot caltrans parking lot. Mid lot right there. Not quite to that overpass yet. Well keep you updated on that. And looks like that fog and the mist is settling in at the Golden Gate Bridge. So visibility certainly an issue now. As you come out of marin county. Through the waldo grade. Heading into the city. So plan for that this morning. Other than that, your ride across say 92 and 84, the dunbarton and san mateo bridge are looking okay this morning. Amanda . Now in our other top stories. The two robo taxi kanes that keep taking heat for blocking traffic could bypass the safety concerns for good today. State regulators are set to decide whether to give cruise and waymo free reign to operate around the clock in San Francisco. Theyve already driven millions of test miles without any major accidents. But weve also seen plenty of video of confused cars coming to stops blocking regular and emergency traffic. Because of that, experts say safety of these driverless cars, not totally clear. The key issue with safety right now is getting more data. And more publicly available data. At this point, the companies that are working on this have a lot of data that they retain in private. That they dont share publicly. And i think in order to gain the confidence of our government officials and of the general public, its doing to be necessary to share more data about whats really happening. Well, in total San Francisco city officials said they have documented about 600 incidents involving selfdriving cars. All right, back to the devastating wildfires on the island of maui and hawaii. Visitors being urged to leave as soon as possible. But just looking at the scene, thats so much easier shadchan done. Sara donchey has details on a stranded bay area family whose relaxing Beach Vacation turned into the camping trip from hell. Reporter the stewart familys dream hawaiian vacation took quite a turn, leaving them to improvise in a way none of them expected. Out camping, but we have plenty of food and we have made a trip to costco as we came into maui and were set with water and food and, you know, had stuff to barbecue with. Even had our own utensils, we were ready. Reporter thats because daniel along with his wife sandra and three daughters followed the Evacuation Order issued by the hotel. Theyre among 4,000 tourists who were forced to evacuate due to the intense fires. Unfortunately, not everybody was. Some folks were stranded and some folks didnt have supplies, you know. As usual, stores ran out of water. Ran out of supplies. Et cetera. And then early this morning, at about 4 00, the hotel staff issued a recommend to evacuate for a mandatory evac came. The fires were getting closer. And so then we evacuated around the north end of maui back to the vicinity of the airport where we are now. Reporter they plan to fly back home to the bay area thursday and for sandra, the destruction on maui feels particularly personal. My grandfather was 100 native hawaiian. And so its very personal for me especially. Because i feel like the island is really taking a hit. I mean, to lose so much that was burned in lahaina, lahaina village, and the village and we heard that the boats that we were just on two days ago are now completely burned, all of them. They were all docked there in the lahaina village area there. Off the pier. And yeah, i mean, its really sad, theres a lot of history. We would really ask for prayer for the residents and the people traveling and we ran into people from all over the world. Reporter and it isnt just people returning to the bay area who are stranded. Some folks from hawaii are stuck here too. Flying in from denver from our annual road trip, and upon landing here in San Francisco, find out all the flights to maui are canceled. Now, we live on maui. We just want to get home. But theres no flights going into maui. Reporter allen and his friend bob say theyre anxious to get home, and like many others who braved cancellations and delays, theyre hoping to try again thursday. We on a ten day road trip, you know, longing to get home. I mean, you live in hawaii. You want to get home. For recall the latest developments from hawaii and more of the dramatic aimages coming out of maui, you can head to kpix. Com. I have never heard of that before, but it doesnt surprise me, yeah, some smart thieves out there. The warning from Law Enforcement you need to know this morning. And later on, cal and stanford still in limbo. The wa welcome back. Bonn the bay area beat, car breakins across the bay area have become an epidemic and now theres a hightech twist to how thieves may be picking their targets. John ramos shows us the sneaky way burglars are finding Electronics Even if theyre completely hidden out of sight. Reporter okay, you leave your car in a parking lot to run an errand, knowing it will just take a minute. Most people know better than to leave Electronic Devices in plain sight so we stick them in the glove box or in the seat, and when you come back, the phone or laptop is gone. Was it really just bad luck . Well, were aware of a trend where thieves are using Bluetooth Technology to track down Electronic Devices that are being left inside of cars. Reporter Livermore Police sergeant tim lendman downloaded a common bluetooth locator app, normally used for finding lost ear buds, for example. But thieves are using it for a different purpose. A thief would take a bluetooth scanner much like this and walk up towards the vehicle and we can see changing signal strength on bluetooth devices. And by Walking Around a vehicle, i can often target where that device might be located. And its approximate signal strength to know im going to steal from this vehicle, not another vehicle. Reporter we tried it in this parking lot and you can see how the signal strengths are changing as we drive closer or farther from vehicles. Thats how thieves are able to hone in on hidden devices. I have never heard of that before. But it doesnt surprise me. Yeah. Some smart thieves out there. Reporter luckily, the solution is simple. Just turn off bluetooth. Or better yet, turn the device off completely, because even laptops that are in sleep mode are still giving off a signal. But that may take some getting used to for teenagers justin koshy and vishnu dhavala. We always usually have bluetooth on, most of us have air pods on and so its just always on for us. Now were kind of worried about keeping bluetooth on. Reporter john casson and josh raritan work in sales and part of the companys territory is in oakland. In just the first week of august, there were 240 burglaries reported citywide and 201 of them were for cars. In some places, its just become accepted. The suburbs, it doesnt happen as often. But your more large larger cities, i think they shrug it off and it happens. Yeah. Reporter so its just part of life for us now . Yeah. To an extent. Reporter its kind of sad. It is. It is. Reporter but that doesnt mean people have to make it easy for the thieves. Take it with you or turn it off. You may think its hidden away, but like so many things in the online world, your device is constantly clamoring for attention. Absolutely is. So just so you know the Police Departments in San Francisco, oakland, san jose and vallejo issued an alert last week about the use of bluetooth in car breakins. One more thing for us to think about. Something we dont have to think about is the weather. Which is why we have jess here. A little bit this afternoon into the inland areas but temperatures right now, just along the coast, theyre mostly in the upper 50s and lower 60s. And were pretty much topping off there this afternoon. Thanks to the marine layer keeping us nice and cool. Now the time right now is 6 18. Official sunrise 6 21. So glad were going to be able to see it flight just kidding the marine layer is very thick for us this morning in areas like marin even down into San Francisco and along the coastline waking up it looks a lot different though off into areas like the Santa Clara Valley and even off into the east bay. Notice how that marine layer really pulls itself back fast just into the lunchtime hours and suddenly we have clear skies from redwood city down into the Santa Clara Valley. Ranging right back up along the highways even stretching into concord and napa this afternoon. But its still cloudy along our coastline. Near pacifica and halfmoon bay. So with that in mind, this is what were waking up to this morning. Near san jose, actually all throughout the Santa Clara Valley for that matter, just a little bit of the cloud layer still waking up us as the sun starts to rise above the mountains. 50s for now and 60s just around of course 8 00 a. M. And10 00 a. M. And then topping off in the 80s in the afternoon throughout the Santa Clara Valley. Lets head up into oakland though. Where weve been monitoring that air quality all morning long. The worst spots currently, closer to el cerrito and berkeley, and even ranging up into spots closer to the Carquinez Strait too. Back to the temperatures real fast. Stay below average today. Low to mid60s around lunchtime and then the upper 60s for our daytime highs. Thats the case for us near oakland and seen San Francisco across the bay bridge. Were expecting 80s today off into the east inland hills. A mild forecast for us now. Low pressure still moving its way in. Whats interesting is Tropical Storm eugene, or what once was, is starting to wring out the last of its energy into california. Heres what it looks like currently just on the satellite and radar. I mean were going to continue to track the system as it sweeps in closer to San Francisco. Bringing us some clouds in the friday forecast. A chance of light drizzle fir anything. For the most part all the models really just showing that light cloud layer in the east bay. Temperatures this weekend for outside lands 60s. Daybyday. We get warmer though. Only have a day pass and its sunday. You are in luck. The best
