There is some road work out there though. Ill show you where that is coming right up. And right now in hawaii, at least 55 people are confirmed dead in those wildfires on the island of maui. That number will likely increase with multiple fires on the island still burning this morning. And teams spreading out to search charred areas. So far, theres no estimate on how many people are missing. But the largest fire there now 80 contained. Those flames broke out on tuesday. Fanned by strong winds as a hurricane passed south of the island. Hawaiis governor toured the devastation yesterday and called it the largest Natural Disaster in state history. Officials are urging residents to stay away with several smaller fires still burning in west maui. And many communities without power and water right now. Its still very, very hazardous in the burn areas. Things are falling every minute around us. President biden has now approved a disaster declaration for hawaii clearing the way for federal assistance. Our prayers are the people of hawaii but not just our prayers. Every asset we have will be available to them. Some have lost loved ones and its not over yet. And here in california, Governor Newsom has deployed anurban team to movie to help search for survivors and firefighters from oakland specialing in that work are also heading to hawaii. Gianna . Also many travelers are in limbo this morning because of those wildfires in maui. Hawaii officials are asking tourists to leave the island and encouraging people with travel plans to reschedule their trips. Our Shawn Chitnis is at sfo this morning with the look at how the wildfires are impacting travelers here in the bay area. Reporter its a busy morning here at sfo. But we do know that there are a couple of flightings going to hawaii this morning including maui. And some families in the bay area are still trying to get back here after being stranded on the island. Take a look at this video from one family that is on the island right now. The parents and the kids got separated while they were staying at the hotel. That is on the island. And the parents went to go make a quick trip and then were never able to get back to the hotel with their kids and the grandparents. So listen to what one dad shared with us about how hes dealing with the situation. Its been a terrifying, exhausting and getting information we dont have any information. Reporter so we understand the parent are working with the hotel. The plan for now is to stay on the island even though they are stranded until all of them are reunited and then they can start looking for flights to come back here to the bay area. Back to you. A lot of people just trying to first time out what to do right now. And nonprofits in the bay area are asking for donations to help the survivors of this weeks devastating wildfires. This is really serious because a lot of people just are left with nothing right now. So what is most in need of the things that people are looking for that we can donate . Well, the items are continuously updating as the days progress. But right now, we are collecting items for hygiene kits, blankets, necessities for childrens clothing, we are also collecting monetary donations that we are going to use to purchase those times as the list updates with verified organizations on the island. And marissa, its really difficult to even get to the island for just humans right now. How quickly can these supplies actually get there to help these people . Well, we are hoping to ship them out on monday. We have a team on the island that are locals and loved ones actually as well. Were going to ship it to them and they will drop it off at a maui county donated dropoff location and were hoping to get it to them by early next week. A lot of scams when it comes to donations and serious situations like this when people are impacted by devastation from whatever kind of Environmental Impact might be happening. How do people know the supplies are getting to the right people that are truly in need . Its really important to make sure that you are doing your research. Theres lot of list of organizations that maui county has put out. And as well as just do your research and make sure its a verified organization and a nonprofit. And then as far as our nonprofit, we will make sure we will have it on the website. And we will have photos there to so you can verify your donation has gotten to where its supposed to get to. Up high and really low down in the Santa Clara Valley with clouds as we wake up this morning. Instrument rated pilot that really excites me. The clouds all throughout the morning and i wish i was up there right now. A gorgeous start to the morning and were seeing the sun kind of rise right inbetween them and current temperatures down into Santa Clara Valley still sitting in the 60s with upper 50s just in the heart of San Francisco. Lets actually head just below those clouds though in san jose. And all throughout the Santa Clara Valley. Later this afternoon, were going to. Warm up fast. Hit the upper 60s by lunchtime just around 10 00 a. M. Actually. 70s by lunchtime and then were only topping off in the upper 70s in this afternoon. Now that marine layer. Its slowly pulling its way back so the cloudy skies down south, theyre going to clear up fast. Did you see the little bit of green that just kind of swept through the coast . Have some drizzle in the forecast for us just along the coastline. Been seeing it the past couple of mornings and really just mist. But just keep that in mind. As the clouds wrap their way over into San Francisco. Thats a live look right now. Cloudy and misty conditions in the heart of San Francisco and kind of cool and grab the jacket. In fact not seeing a ton of brake lights or issurely the only thing to look t for is so road work. So if you are going through the grade. Homicideup. You typically take 84 niles canyon. Definitely consider alternate route. Maybe just using 680 itself there morning. Thats moving along just fine. Theres road work emergency repairs on 84. Niles canyon eastbound to main street. So thats closed until further notice. Well get you updated on that. All right, lets take a look at some other parts of the bay area communities live look here at the Golden Gate Bridge. Not too bad. Weve not seen too much fog this morning. So a pretty nice ride heading in as you work your way to San Francisco. Heres a live look at conditions. This is the Altamont Pass area or heading into it. As you work your way from tracy getting on to 580. Thats certainly slow. Especially that 580 flyover with a few slow travel times in the area as you get into the Altamont Pass. Amanda . Time for a look at this mornings other top stories now. Air quality officials issued a pair of violation notices to the plant near the port of oakland where the massive fire broke out on wednesday. We showed you a lot of the images yesterday morning and the fire blanketed several parts of the east bay in thick black smoke. And oakland, firefighters spent more than 24 hours batting the fire here. In this debris pile thats filled with tin and iron and steel thats what you are seeing all through here. Now that fire was burning at radius recycling which was formerly known as schnitzer steel. The recycling yard has had fires here before we found. In 2021, the plant paid more than 4 million to settle a lawsuit from Alameda County and the state, claiming it allowed Hazardous Waste to pollute nearby areas. And the bay area air Quality Management district has found ongoing violations at the valero refinery. Specifically the district says the refinery failed to install pollution control equipment on multiple devices. Despite them being required by law. Regulators say the violations resulted in 165 tons of illegal emissions being just released into the air. Air district is asking an independent hearings board to force valero to correct those violations immediately. All right, expect to see more driverless taxis out in San Francisco. How about that . Two companies cruise and way many just got the green light they needed to offer rides around the clock in the city. Public comment at yesterdays Commission Meeting went on for more than five hours before vote. Its now the first city in the world to have multiple Companies Offer fully operational paid driverless taxi services. It is 6 10. Tackling environment tallishes. Silicon valley students are tackling Environmental Issues at the annual green careers bus tour. At the event they said theres no time to waste here. Its just going to impact everyones future going forward. So the tour is part of Silicon Valley youth climate action. At the event yesterday high school and College Students got the chance to learn about multiple industries that may not immediately come to mind when talking about green careers. But offer a way to work toward a more sustainable future. Its something that every person in my generation like thinks about constantly. Its just something constantly in our head. We always see it on media and its something we cannot run away from. So i think its so important for us as a generation to tackle it headon. Inspiring to see them talking like that at such a young age. So they toured Sustainable Design studios, wastewater recycling plants and even sunnyvales Carbon Neutral city hall. Were still dealing with that thick marine layer in the heart of the city. Its even stretching its way over into oakland but hey, you know, have to say it. Official sunrise 6 21 this morning. Then it slowly pulls back along our coastline and we even have little bit of coastal drizzle once again this morning. For anyone driving into the city or out of the city or just along our coastline this morning, you might need the wind shield wipers and thats okay. Its going to dissipate in the afternoon and were still left with the cloudy skies and below average temperatures today anywhere though. You know, its going to be a beautiful one. We maybe knotted for our friends in San Francisco, a little too cool for that heading into the evening hours tonight. Still about six degrees below average. The three day festival is sold out on the outside lands site. Thats not really much of a surprise considering all of the great musical acts that are coming out this year.
