His art has appeared sometimes overnight in all kinds of Public Places in any number of cities around the world. Its a skill he honed while evading police a as a graffiti artist back in his early days. Despite the fact a banksy can be worth many millions, his true identity remains a closely guarded secret, known only to a small number of friends and associates. With seth doane we look at the art and artistry of banksy. Reporter he sets his own rules in the art world. You have banksys around you here, but with no offense, isnt this operation exactly what he hates . Oh, i have no doubt. Reporter the secretive british artist is giving us a glimpse into what makes him tick while still keeping most of us guessing. You have, obviously, you know who banksy is . I do know who banksy is, indeed. Reporter banksy coming up this sunday morning. Our david martin will be taking with oscarwinning Actor Morgan Freeman who has gone behind the camera to tell the inspiring story of some long overlooked american heroes. Largest library in the world. Reporter Morgan Freemans film work is already in the library of congress. They fought across france, luxembourg, belgium. Reporter the latest about an allblack armored unit in world war ii. What struck you most about their story . The thing that would strike anybody, i think, is the fact that all of this is true and nobody knows about it. Reporter why dont we know all of American History . The little known history of the 761st tank battalion ahead on sunday morning. Until now. We are going to make them noticed. Luke burbank has a summer song from two of the original members of the group depeche mode. Time was their groundbreaking electronic music made them a cult classic, but these days they are enjoying international acclaim. Reporter for over 40 years, depeche mode just hasnt been able to get enough. Reporter but the sudden death of one of the bands founders has left them in unfamiliar territory. Someone we have been with, worked together for 40 plus years, everything has changed. Reporter later on sunday morning, depeche mode on learning to enjoy the silence. He is the subject of a current art exhibit, popular podcast and many books. His name is banksy, an artist who works in the shadows, but cant seem to avoid the limelight. Seth doane goes in search of an elusive modern master. Reporter most artists have an obsession that defines their work. Monet had light. Hawkny has color. Ive got Police Response time. Thats banksy in his own words, from his First Authorized exhibition in 14 years. One scene is a vandal he has revered for his work, it sells for millions. Street artists most ambitious masterpiece may be keeping his identity hidden. Did you hear directly from banksy . No, this is what, i suppose, one of the great mysteries. I have never met him. I have never spoken to him. Reporter you are hosting the exhibition . Yes. Reporter putting it together required extensive planning and a cover story. Gareth james, who manages the gallery of modern art in glasgow, scotland, told people they would be refurbishing the windows. Had to keep it secret from colleagues, family, friends. Reporter couldnt tell your family . No. We didnt want to risk it getting out. Reporter did you have to sign a nondisclosure agreement . Yes. Reporter the idea was for the show to just appear unannounced, like banksys work, cut and run, 25 years card labor, features the stencils for many of his best known images and work from as far back as the late 90s. Banksy recreates his desk and his child hood bedroom where he explains how this scene from the cult movie jaws inspired him. Vandalism. That is a delib rit mutilation of a Public Service message. Reporter it showed me everything i needed to know about graffiti, he writes, it should be audacious and funny. Seems so much of this exhibition is the captions. Yeah. You really maybe come away with a feeling of having an insight or maybe trying to get to know banksy a bit because that voice is there. Reporter banksys political voice has always been there in his art. In ukraine last year, ruins were the canvas for his commentary on a conflict he paints as david versus goliath. He often champions the underdog, migrants or palestinians in the west bank, where in the shadow of israels separation barrier he created the walledoff hotel. Painted these two angels trying to take the war apart. Reporter this is banksy . Yeah. Reporter his art is coveted but, of course, graffiti is not exactly legal. Videos posted to his instagram reveal his gur errilla style tactics to avoid detection. It was more about avoiding the police . Yes. And nothing to do with it being a promotional tour. Quickly, it became the best promotional tour ever invented. Reporter Steve Lazarides was an early associate of banksys in the working class english town of bristol. What kind of guy is he . Difficult. Reporter in what way . In that way that sometimes people are ingenious at what they are doing. There is no taking away from the fact that the guys like is a legend. He was making images and messages that everyone could understand, and i think thats what was the game changer, like making art, you didnt feel stupid looking at it. Reporter he is sometimes criticized that its too simplistic. Only criticized by the art world. They never liked him. They never liked the movement. Its been almost 30 years, and all of that, without any help from the art world. Reporter whats interesting, there is now this dance between these two worlds. Now the art world wants it. Reporter lazarides says he has thousands of photos of banksy working, some he published, though they parted ways, he has not publicly revealed the artists identity. Listen to this story about banksy searching for inspiration. On my computer. I looked and, robin, youre looking up, like, child sex dolls on my computer. He is like, yeah, yeah, i want to get something to put up in the air. Reporter you know you are saying a name what you say that . Yeah, yeah. That names out there. Who says its true . Reporter you are saying you said robin, robert . Robin, robert, robbie. Reporter people have been speculating about banksys identity for decades. Among the names tossed around are bristol artist Robert Gunning ham and robert de naja. He is a graffiti artist, way better than banksy. Reporte there is talk thats the same person . I heard the stories. Reporter these artworks pop up pretty much along the lines of a massive attack tour in this city, massive attack maybe the artist at the gig and then done a piece of art. Yes, its robert del naja, and me, and a few other people. Reporter you have to dance a very fine line. You know this information, people want to know, and i dont know if youre being serious or not. Maybe im being serious and maybe im not. Thats as much as youre getting from me. Reporter its a tough world to get into, banksys world. Its not tough. Its impossible. I deal in very important artworks by major Museum Artists from picasso to damion hurst, and there is nowhere near this level of secrecy or gamesmanship. Reporter what do you mean by gamesmanship . Its a bit wild west dealing in banksy artworks. Reporter one of the biggest collectors and dealers of banksys work out of his london gallery. Rather exclusively, banksy has managed to create a new set of rules within the art world, which is if it doesnt have a certificate of authenticity, you should not sell it. You should not buy it. And thats astonishing. It was a quagmire of problems. What if the artist doesnt like the early work. Reporter or doesnt like the person seeking the authenticity . Yeah, problem, right. Reporter the art world is interesting. Wild west. Reporter and it seems banksys people can play sheriff. The auction house, kristys, stopped responding to emails regarding our interview request. Sothebys pulled out after telling us they were going to check with banksys team. Its a closed shop. I have been dealing in his work almost 20 years now, and its a closed shop to me. Reporter banksys 2004 work nay pop first piqued his interest. I was taken by it. Frivolity with serious elements, a message. And as you get to know his work more and more, you have a little laugh because its lighthearted. Then you suck your teeth a little. Actually, there is some weight to it. Reporter how much is banksys message, how much is it pure skill as an artist . He is actually quite painterly, but he chose to execute work through stencils, much like andy warhol did through screen prints. Reporter but there is no precedent in the art world for this. Shredding a piece seconds after it was sold at auction for 1. 4 million. And a reverent middle finger to the establishment is a theme of his work, but the stunt actually added value. The shredded painting resold a few years later for 25 million. In the glasgow exhibition, banksy shows how he pulled it off. For all thats on display here, there is one essential implement banksy uses which is not the nondisclosure agreement. I still struggle to say the artists name. I spent years absolutely not saying the artists name for fear i would give something away. Reporter and those who know the artists identity are bound or choose not to expose him. I am not going to reveal it. There are institutions, including uk papers, that would pay a lot of money for him to be unmasked. Not one person has stepped up to take the bounty. Reporter how can that be . At the risk of overly r romanticizing, one has to assume that he is a good person. He knows how to look after the people around him. Reporter would something change if we knew his identity . I am not sure, and i really hope we never find out. Holy cannoli. Look at this. Its like a science project. Ordering lunch easy for you and me but can be so difficult for a young homeowner tuturning intoto their parar. Are those all different lettuces . Uhuh, yes, sir. Its the deadliest wildfire in the United States in years. It happened on the lush Hawaiian Island of maui, and leveled homes and businesses in the town of lahaina, which dates back to the 1700s and has long been a tourist mecca. We get the latest from jonathan vigliotti. Reporter postcard perfect lahaina, mauis historic gem, an once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom now lies in ruin. Homes, businesses, and hotels. 80 of the town smolder for miles on the pacific. A pileup of charred cars frozen in place by racing flames show the panic and desperation that hit these streets after many became trapped. The wildfire that ripped through this american paradise on tuesday caught everyone off guard. I had no idea what was going on because we had no cell service, no tv, no internet. Reporter residents say evacuation orders were never issued, neither were text alerts. Some people so desperate, ran into the ocean to escape the flames, but dozens didnt make it out alive. Carbon dioxide. We held on as best as we could. Reporter by the time help arrived in town, the firestorm had taken a terrible toll. The Hawaii Attorney general has launched a comprehensive review into the Emergency Response as officials warn the number of dead could rise significantly in the weeks to come. Teams with the National Guard are sifting through the ashes. X marking the spots that have already been checked. Officials say canine crews have searched only 3 of the wreckage so far. We have an area we have to contain, and it is full of our loved ones. Weve got 89 so far. Today, we identified two. Reporter its all eerily reminiscent of another paradise in california where 85 people died in 2018. Both communities may be separated by an ocean, but they are connected, according to scientists, by the very same warming atmosphere thats brought more drought, less rain, and the higher fire risk. This weekend, in lahaina, thousands remain displaced, living in shelters, unsure of what comes next. We are the only things we have now, because everything that we had in the past is gone. Reporter federal aid already approved by President Biden will help the city rebuild, but it will take years. Among the few survivors that will link old to new is the towns sprawling 150yearold banyan tree, badly burned, but unbowed. In hawaiian culture, the banyan is a symbol of growth, strength, and rebirth. I have type 2 diabetes, but i manage it well. Conor knighton this morning has a whale oftale about the ta of a whale. Reporter located on mexicos southwest coast in the state of guerrero, the village of Barra De Potosi is a bit off the beaten path. You wont find mega resorts full of tourists here, but its a popular vacation destitination r humpbaback whaleses, which t tr ththousands o of m miles j justd inin this patctch of the p paci. They are coming down for this warm tropical salty water where they can really relax and reporter Katherina Audley is the founder of the nonprofit whales of guerrero. A decade ago she began working with local fishermen to develop a conservation focused ecotourism program. When the whales win, everyone wins. People here really understand. Reporter former fishing boats have now been repurposed that whalewatching vessels. A whale just jumped reporter which are really tail watching vessels. When whales dive they flash their tails, known as flukes. When the hump backs are in residence here, they put on quite a show. This is just amazing i have never seen this before. Reporter audley took these photos on the boat. On land, we got online and thats where this tale gets a little deeper. Seven times, wow. Wow. So we have seen this before. It has an i. D. Reporter this whale is crc 18946. This one crc 18241. Turns out, we werent the first to watch these bhaels. These are all the pictures that different people have taken of this whale. Reporter every whales tail is unique. The ridges of the top, the colors and patterns of the fluke, its like a fingerprint. A clue. This whale algorithm has allowed us to instantly put together six sightings for this whale. Reporter its possible thanks to the website happywhale. Com. Anyone in the world can upload a fluke photo and happy whale matches it up to all other known sightings. Both bhaels we photographed in mexico had been seen the year before near monterey, california. Which is also where youre likely to spot the human behind happy whale. We have a whale up again at about 8 00. Reporter Ted Cheeseman grew up whale watching in monterey bay, which is full of whales in the summer months. They come to feed here. Oh, nice big old tail breach there. That was awesome. Reporter he went on to work as a nationalist, guidek expeditions all over the world. While scientist use flukes to identify whales for decades, he couldnt understand why the process had remained cumbersome. The catalogs were so big,
