The elegant brick line beauty of the United Nations plaza has changed. Becoming a Gathering Place for the homeless and drug take into accounted. One day a week the atmosphere changes thanks to the sundays Farmers Market. And this Farmers Market was founded on that principle. From day one we had a line of people in this neighborhood waiting to purchase fresh produce. Reporter the presence of so many people discourages the troubled element from congregating and officials have taken notice. They asked if the market could operate seven days a week. But when that wasnt possible, the city quietly developed a plan to move the farmers out. Instead the plaza will soon contain a Public Recreation area including skateboarding, pickle ball, and tech board courts and pingpong and chess tables. My understanding in what we have been told is it is an experimental Pilot Project to try to improve conditions on u. N. Plaza. Weve been told that if it does not work out, if it proves to be unsuccessful, theyll put the bricks back, and we can come right back on the plaza. We have our doubts about that, but thats what we have been told. Reporter and so what happens to the farmers . They will be moved to the parking lot just across the street from u. N. Plaza, but theyre not happy about it. They say the space, which market customers use for parking, is smaller and will not allow the same size vendor tents or space for their work trucks. That would make a difference for morgan hill farmer, tony mellow. He doesnt see the equity in displacing the farmers. Isnt it normal to leave something thats there, there and do it where they want us to go . Put their little park or skateboard thing over there. Reporter customers agree. They think the city is looking for an easy way out rather than deal with the real problem. Why bring in different element, a skate park and so forth. Why not allow this to be as it is and help those that need the help instead of just trying to move them to nowhere . Reporter the farmers are asking the public to speak out. Even they realize it is probably a done deal. Demolition of a fountain in the parking lot has already begun. Farmer ken phan is trying to keep an open mind about the move. More customers maybe. Maybe well be busier. Who knows. Well see. I dont know yet. But for now, we are just going to have to go along and work together. Reporter the markets executive director says when they decided not to fight the plan, the city portrayed it as support for it. So he says he will not be attending a Public Meeting on monday because he doesnt want to be seen as endorsing a plan that is being forced on them. The executive director says even if the current farmers can squeeze into the new space, it will eliminate the possibility of growth. He says that prevents the market from ever fully recovering from the pandemic. Just across from u. N. Plaza, government workers have been told to stay home and avoid the federal building. According to a memo obtained by the San Francisco chronicle. In that memo federal officials cited poor conditions at the building, and told employees to work from home. There are a number of federal agencies in the building. Its not how many of the workers were invited to not come to work. You can see the thunderstorms. Well switch our view as you can see where they are coming from. A lot of thunderstorms that are out that way. But the flow wants to keep bringing all that stuff in our general direction. But if you watch it, its falling apart before it does that. The leading edge of it is trying to bring in a little bit of rain. You see that one right there . If you take a look at this, we will track just that one little band there, which is now working their way towards 580. No measurable rain in any of the gauges that we could check out here. A lot of that is rural and basically out towards Altamont Pass and that would be it. But dont be surprised over here if maybe if you notice a few light showers. I doubt it will be anything to measure. But thats where it is coming from. The very unique set up to get this that you wouldnt see anything driving this. You look at the satellite and there is nothing there. When we look at that atmosphere a little different way and that spin down here and watch what happens. You see that area of low pressure . And that is pulling. Like the pin wheel or like the fishing rod that will be reeling in the moisture that will live over here all summer long. The desert southwest.
