Its been this way more than 40 years. Its a hallmark in your community. So your community station is in the city of San Francisco where we hear the city wants to push the farmers aside to make improvements in the area. For nearly 40 years this Farmers Market has existed in the United Nations plaza. It began as a solution to a problem of not enough healthy fruits and vegetables in the area. Now it looks like an even bigger problem may be forcing it out. The elegant brick lined beauty of United Nations plaza has changed in recent years. Now most days it has become a Gathering Place for the homeless and drug addicted. One day a week the atmosphere changes thanks to the sunday Farmers Market. This market was founded on the principle that this was a food desert and from day one, we had a line of people in the neighborhood waiting to purchase fresh produce. Reporter the presence of so many people discourages troubled element from congregating and officials have taken notice. They asked if the market could operate seven days a week. When that wasnt possible the city quietly developed a plan to move the farmers out. Instead it will include a Public Recreation area including pickleballing, ping pong, chess tables. We have been told it is an experimental Pilot Project to try to improve conditions on un plaza. We have been told if it does not work out, if it proves to be unsuccessful, theyll put the bricks back and we can come back on the plaza. We have our doubts about that. But thats what we have been told. Reporter what happens to the farmers . They will be moved to the parking lot across the street from un plaza but theyre not happy about it. They say the space which market customers use for parking is smaller and will not allow same size vendor tents or space for the work trucks. That would make a difference. Tony doesnt see equity in displacing farmers because of actions of others. Isnt it normal to leave something thats thru and do it where they want us to go, put their park or skateboard thing over there. Reporter customer ramon agrees. I thinks the si is looking for an easy way out. Why bring in a different element, a skate park and so forth . Why not allow this to be as it is and help those that need help instead of just trying to move them to nowhere . Reporter farmers are asking the public to speak out but even they realize it is probably a done deal. Demolition of a fountain in the parking lot has begun and ken fan is trying to keep an open mind about the move. More customers maybe. Maybe we might be busier. Who knows . Could be pro and con. Well see. For now well have to go along and work together. Reporter the markets executive director said when they decided not to fight the plan, the city portrayed it as support. He will not be attending a public mighting tomorrow because you doesnt want to be seen as endorsing a fan that is being force the on them. The people on the ground are saying this works. When we are here, crime goes down. I dont understand why theyre not listening to the people on the ground. When you look at the Farmers Market it is so important to bring the fresh vegetables and showcase the local farmers. I like seeing people together. Maybe people will come from other parts of the bay to visit the Farmers Market. That part is nice and i think it boosts and helps positivity. We need those solutions. Keep them coming. Jess, lets talk about the weather. It was a beautiful weekend for Farmers Markets. It really was. There were so many events that happened this weekend too and the weather cooperated.
