Recent years. Now most days it has become a Gathering Place for the homeless and drug addicted, but one day a week the atmosphere changes thanks to the sunday farmers market. I mean this market was founded on that principle that this was a food desert and from day one we had a line of people in this neighborhood waiting to purchase fresh produce. Reporter the presence of so many people discourages the troubled element from congregating and officials have taken notice. They asked if the market could operate seven days a week, but when that wasnt possible, the city quietly developed a plan to move the farmers out. Instead the plaza will soon contain a Public Recreation area, including skateboarding, pickleball and tech ball courts and ping pong and chess tables. My understanding and what weve been told is that it is a experimental Pilot Project to try to improve conditions on u. N. Plaza. Weve been told that if it does not work out, if it proves to be unsuccessful, theyll put the bricks back and we can come right back on the plaza. We have our doubts about that, but thats what we have been told. Reporter so what happens to the farmers . They will be moved to the parking lot just across the street from u. N. Plaza, but theyre not happy about it. They say the space which market customers currently use for parking is smaller and will not allow the same size vendor tents or space for their work trucks. That would make a difference for morgan hill farmer tony mellow. He just doesnt see the equity of displacing the farmers because of the action to others. Isnt it normal to leave something thats there there and do it where they want it to go, put their little park or skateboard thing over there . Reporter customer ramone zaniba agrees. He thinks the city is looking for an easy way out rather than dealing with the real problem. Why bring in a different element, skatepark and so forth . Why not allow this to be as it is and help those that need the help instead of just trying to move them to nowhere . Reporter the farmers are asking the public to speak out, but even they realize its probably a done deal. Demolition of a fountain in the parking lot has already begun and farmer ken phan is trying to keep an open mind about the move. More customer maybe. All the places come. Maybe we might be more busier, too. Who knows . Could be pro and con. Well see. I dont know yet, but for now well just have to go along and work together. Just across from u. N. Plaza government workers are being told to stay home and avoid the federal building. Thats according to a memo obtained by the San Francisco chronicle. In it a federal official cited poor conditions at the building and told employees to work from home. There are a number of federal agencies in that building. Its not clear how many workers were invited to stay home. It is backtoschool week for many bay area families. Students in San Francisco and fremont returned to the classroom this wednesday and heyward hayward schools start thursday. As we know, it gets more expensive every year for parents to send their students to school. Max darrow introduces us to a bay area barber who is looking to ease the burden and making sure students look their best. What kind of haircut are we doing today, brother . Reporter the start of a new school year could mean big business for anthony cordeiro, a barber in San Franciscos excelsior district, but hed rather trim profits in the hops of giving kids a confidence boost as they head back to school. I want him to look nice and fresh and clean for his first day of school. Reporter over two days cordeiro and his students at the Academy Barber college gave around 70 haircuts to kids for free. Where our business is i feel this community is very underserved and we want to make sure the kids get haircuts before they get back to school. Not a lot of parents can afford it. Reporter thats steven in the chair. Hes starting eighth grade. Its a big year. Yeah, graduation year. Reporter he says a fresh haircut will help him start off on the right foot. You look good, play good, feel good, you know. Reporter he was grateful to sit in the chair for free. Growing up in the bayview, steven has learned the importance of saving money wherever you can. With that money you can do lots of stuff, get a little bit of food or something, help out the family. I have family that lives in like mexico. So even a bit of money can help a lot. Reporter aside from giving them a free clean cut, cordeiro hopes to teach the kids who spend 30 minutes in his chair about the importance of giving back. Always pay it forward. Yeah, for sure. Help somebody else. Yeah. Make sense . Yeah. There you go. Reporter even when its hard to do. Cordeiro is no stranger to tough times. The pandemic caused him to close his barbershop for most of 2020 and then in 2022 he had to close again, this time for five months because of a fire. No matter what you go through, man, if you dont help other people, it wont come back to you. So thats why i love to give back, love helping other people. The way ive always been is ill give you the tshirt off my back even though i dont have anything. Thats why even though we can make a huge all of money doing this, it doesnt thats not what drives me. Reporter Building Confidence and spreading kindness near the corner of geneva and mission one haircut at a time. Just leaving a smile on their face, thats everything for me. Hows it feel . Better. Feel better. Stay with cbs news bay area and kpix. Com for continuing coverage as our kids head back to School Across the bay. Of course, parents want their kids to have the best teachers possible, but with the states growing problem of teacher shortages theyre lucky to have any educators standing at the head of the classroom. There are thousands of empty teaching positions here in california and getting a teaching credential is so time consuming and expensive lots of teachers forego the process entirely. A bill now making its way through the legislature hopes to tackle the shortage. It would increase teacher pay by 50 by 2030. We need to make sure educators can afford to live and own a home within the communities they teach. If the state bill is passed, it would also mean paying Student Teachers and creating credentialing programs at community colleges. For the time being, schools are still struggling with the problem of posting teaching jobs and having anybody apply. Another group that could get more money from a bill in sacramento, veterans. For now california is the only state in the union to tax veterans pensions, but today the bill to repeal those taxes for the next decade was delayed for budgetary reasons. Assembly bill 46 has broad bipartisan support, but the lost tax revenue could cost the state over 250 million and with the state facing a massive deficit, the Senate Appropriations committee put it on suspense to take a longer look at the possible impact. A vote to bring the bill out of suspension is scheduled for september 1st. The vote to approve the bill would come a few days later. Up next, an unbelievable ending to a terrifying accident, what happened after two pilots had to eject from their plane during an airshow. This was unbelievable. Two pilots narrowly escape before their plane crashed into an apartment complex during an airshow. This is the scary moment. You can see the two pilots eject themselves the last minute from the plane before the explosion. The pilots were able to parachute into a nearby lake. Some bystanders also shot video of the plane on fire after it hit the ground. The ntsb says early reports show the plane was having engine trouble. This happened 30 miles south of detroit. Investigators are still looking for answers after a home exploded in pittsburgh, killing five people. That explosion caught on a neighbors doorbell camera. Authorities say they recovered the bodies of four adults and one teenager. Police say the explosion destroyed one home and then the flames from the blast destroyed two neighboring homes and caused damage to at least a dozen more. I think our roof partly caved in. Im not certain because i ran out, but it definitely shook. It was very, very scary. A local gas company says they inspected the lines near the home and all seemed to be working okay. Officials say it could take months, if not years before, they know the exact cause of the explosion. A local newspaper in Central Kansas says local authorities seized its computers, cell phones, and reporting materials. Freedom watchdogs are calling it a violation of the u. S. Constitutions protection for a free press. The owner of the marin county record, eric meyers, says Law Enforcement also raided his home. He believes the raid was motivated by a confidential source leaking documents about a local restaurant owner. He says she complained to City Council Members the newspaper illegally obtained sensitive information. The search warrant alleges Identity Theft and unlawful use of a computer. I got called from one local person who said, i saw this thing on facebook. You ought to see it. I said can you send it to me . Im not sure. They may seize my computer. Thats the kind of Chilling Effect you worry about in this. Meyers 98yearold mother who coowned the paper died on saturday and meyer blames the death on stress from that police raid. Singer Kris Kristofferson who graduated from San Mateo High School is putting his Northern California ranch on the market for 17 million. Look at those views. Hes known for writing hits like me and bobby magee for janis joplin. The ranch is near the town of elk in mendocino county. He bought it in 1980. He is 87 years old and played his last concert in 2020. Those are Million Dollar views, paul. 17 million. Yeah. That what youre getting for your birthday . No. Happy birthday, by the way. Thanks, buddy. Many happy returns. Made you work on your birthday. I dont know about that. I get to be with you, so its a celebration. Not buying that one, but thanks for putting the happy gloss on it. We got you some thunderstorms for your birthday as well. Lets zoom out to look what is happening. There is that view from Black Mountain tours, thunderstorms that blew up over the diablo range now drifting northward into alameda county. Areas of fog will develop later tonight. Still a possibility some of these popup showers or thunderstorms. Hot temperatures inland continue through wednesday, thursday a transition day back down to a near average temperature pattern by friday, saturday, and sunday. Some convective clouds, basically debris from the popup showers and thunderstorms around the rest of the region still drifting through our skies the next couple days. The actual showers and storms in the bay area will be few and far between. We have one now producing some cloudtoground lightning about 30 minutes ago, no new cloudtoground lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes, good news because we dont want any fire starts. This is dropping actual rain, so the hope is that even if that lightning did spark something that started to smolder, the rain would put it out. You can see that storm developing and now drifting north. Its going to quiet down the rest of this evening. The bulk of the activity has been elsewhere in california, especially the high sierra seeing dozens, if not hundreds, of cloudtoground lightning strikes today. Thats where most of the action will be concentrated the next couple days as well. Futurecast shows that developing pretty much every afternoon. Northern california, the mountains there getting some additional showers and thunderstorms. What we just see is our back and forth fog pattern and continuation of the kind of muggy feel. Right now this is the view from salesforce tower. Actually this is the wrong panel. Temperatures were significantly hotter inland reaching into the upper half of the 90s, some spots close to 100 degrees. The fog will try to spread out, but its really going to be confined to kind of the bayshore, maybe infiltrating some of the inland valleys of the north bay and Santa Clara Valley the rest of town. Temperatures will warm up. Well start off with a lot of 60s, another consequence of that additional moisture in the atmosphere limiting how much our temperatures can cool off overnight. Highs tomorrow are still going to be on the toasty side, about 5 to 10 degrees above normal, 60s along the coast, 70s around the bay, 80s and 90s down the peninsula and a lot of 90s inland, the delta and trivalley up to around 100 degrees. Temperatures back down to pretty much normal for this time of year by friday, saturday, and sunday and then another warmup kicks in next week. At least weve broken out of the pattern where the hottest days are always over the weekend. We kind of flipped it around. Temperatures return to the lower half of the 80s for most of the north bay valleys and Santa Clara Valley for the end of the workweek and weekend. Temperatures inland and the east bay will be the hottest, right around 100 tomorrow and wednesday, but closer to normally hot by the weekend. On the coast youll see plenty of that fog and low cloud cover with temperatures remaining in the 60s for a while, maybe a little closer to 70 by early next week. Paul, thanks so much. Time for a check of whats ahead at 6 00. We switch over to Juliette Goodrich. Thank you. At 6 00, an east bay city is heading to court to protect some of its most vulnerable children. It claims a Foster Care Center thats supposed to be a safe haven is a hotbed for sex trafficking and drug use. So why it blamame the e coununty for allowiwing i happen. Plus it is a onetwo punch that could boost californias power and water supply, the push to cover thouousands of mimiles of c ca with sosolar panels and where o project is already moving quickly. The news at 6 00 is coming up in about ten minutes. Lets head to matt for a look at sports. Hello. Thank you. Jimmy garoppolo all smiles after the raid beat his former team 347. The question is will we see brock purdy next saturday . Thats yet to be determined, but purdy will increase his workload to three consecutive days of practice this week. Trey lance probably jealous. He would like more reps after a rough start yesterday. The backup offensive line simply didnt do him any favors. He did throw a touchdown pass to ross dwelley, but even that wasnt how they drew it up. It was a yes, yes, yes, no, yes situation, yeah. Dwelley made a great play. Definitely not the start rookie kicker jake moody hopped for. The third round pick missed both field goal attempts. That matches his total from last season at michigan. You could say he put the faithful in a bad moody. Ill be here all week. Tip your waiters and waitresses. Punt returner, another position up for grabs now. Rayray mccloud out for two months. Rookie ronnie bell got his first crack yesterday, but it turns out theres a veteran lobbying for the job. Reporter i understand youre fielding punts and kicks, right . Im throwing my hat in the ring. Ive just kind of incorporated it into my warmup and being able to track the football like that, it gets me ready for practice and with rayray down, if that number ever needs to be called, i told kyle im ready. Im all for it. Lets give it to him. Giants take on the rays tonight at oracle park. San francisco holds the second wildcard spot after snapping a fourgame losing streak yesterday. Welcome to the show, wade meckler. The giants called up the 23yearold outfielder from sacramento and sent down luis matos. Meckler started the season in singlea, but hes moved through the minors hitting. 379 this season. Patrick bailey, another rookie, continues to add to the impressive campaign. Two weeks ago he delivered a walkoff win when he picked off the tying run to end the game and on sunday a much more traditional walkoff with the giants down to their final out bailey belting a tworun homer in the tenth inning to win it and avoid the sweep. Warriors forward jonathan kominga showed what he was working on. He flew up to play in a game Jamal Crawford was hosting at the proam league and finished with 60 points. Liz, so many sports, but did you catch the 9ers on sunday . I did. It was not good. He makes it look so easy, though. Isnt that nice . How does he move so quickly . Matt, thanks.
