Riright now onon cbs news s area, a unique challenge for firefighters is only becoming more common, especially here in california. Good evening, i am elizabeth cook. And i am ryan yamamoto. If you dont drive them, you are seeing more and more around you on the road. Last year more electric and hybrid vehicles were registered in the u. S. Here in california the number is also rising, almost quadrupling since 2016. When these vehicles catch fire they burn hotter and longer thanks to the lithiumion batteries that power them. As our National Correspondent reports, some firefighters need more training just to keep you safe. Reporter the tactics that we are using for internal Combustion Engine vehicles dont apply to batteries on these electric vehicles. We are used to applying water and the vevehicle going ouout relativev quickly and that just isnt the case with these electric vehicles. For this first part, guys, we will cover battery access techniquques. Reporter r veteran n firerefighter chchris soto and teteam are simimulating evev ba fires s trainining for the next frontier in firefighting. You are training while you learn how these fires behave. How much of a challenge is that . It is huge. We do not have the knowledge always to tell us the best way to combat these fires. How much water do you need . If your vehicle has been in a crash or accident, park it away from other cars and structures and make sure that it is checked for safety by the manufacturer. Experts go on to say that consumers should use certified chargers and by we have seen a number of recent lightning fires in the sierra and the Tahoe National forest has been busy trying to keep up. Most of these fires are in remote areas with no access to roads and the summer they have been able to drop firefighters into these areas by helicopter with a new repelling program. We have several areas in the tahoe where you are relying on aviation. We are relying on our platform to fly recon and help spot them. Of course our lookout towers are staffed. Up next a bunch of young people, some just five years old, take their state to court over Environmental Concerns and win. Why experts say it could be a landmark case. In a first of its kind trial, a Montana State judge ruled in favor of 16 young environmental activists this week. The judge said montanas government has not been upholding its state constitutional obligation to provide a clean and healthy environment. The plaintiffs, whose ages range from 22 down to just five years old argued that they were being harmed by wildfire smoke, excessive heat and other Climate Change issues. I hope that because judge seeley ruled our Current Energy policy and constitutional that we might be able to construct an Energy Policy that is more in line with montanas goals and constitution. Montana state policy prevents agencies from looking at Greenhouse Gas emissions when evaluating fossil fuel permits, something the judge ruled as unconstitutional. It is still unclear if there will be changes, because it is up to montanas Republican Controlled Legislature to create new policies. The Attorney Generals Office says it will appeal the ruling. But it is so interesting to see young people get involved in a very real way, not just a protest, but actually taking states to court. We are seeing that even in california, where young people are making Real Initiative change happens and it would be nice to see money and resources going into Energy Resources instead of just digging in your heels. Lets take a look at what our weather holds over the next few days. We still have the remnants of eugene just hanging out off the coast. This will drift closer to the central coast, giving a very slight chance of showers to the bay area by the end of the work week on friday. In the shorter term all the activity has been largely focused over the high sierra and the mountains of northern california. We did see lightning bolts earlier this morning but over the past six hours or so we have been pretty calm. As we head through tonight and the next couple of days the activity will largely be concentrated over the mountains. You can see everything firing up with minimal activity expected over the bay area. Never say never with this type of weather pattern. You will notice the mugginess as you head outside, but in terms of the concentrated chance of showers and thunderstorms, we will see maybe a chance of passing showers with remnants of eugene a little bit closer to us by the end of the work week on friday. So the 10 day outlook for concord shows another hot day tomorrow, and especially when you factor in the noticeable humidity. A bit of a drop on thursday but still hot and then upper 80s on friday, saturday and sunday. We are then back into the middle portion of the 90s with an even bigger surge of tropical moisture likely to head our way from the south. We track that coming up at 6 00. Looking outside, blue skies with clouds in the distance. The storms in the sierra are visible if you go up high enough. Temperatures today topped out in 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Almost got up to 100 in both concord and livermore with both places topping out at 99 degrees. Fremont made up to 87, 73 in the city and just 64 in pacifica. Tonight temperatures drop down mainly to the 60s. Air that has more moisture does not cool off as efficiently, so even with the lack of relative cloud cover overhead we are not going to cool down that much because the air does have the little hint of humidity in it. Temperatures tomorrow hed write back up around the water. Midtoupper 80s down the peninsula and the south end of the bay with a mix of 80s and 90s inland but upper 90s around morgan hill and gilroy. A mix of 90s and low 100s inland and in the east bay. Right around 70 in San Francisco, really nice weather in the city. We have upper 80s to around 90 degrees for much of the north bay until you go further north and further inland where temperatures are more likely to get up to 100 degrees. Temperatures back down to an almost normal levels by friday, saturday and sunday for pretty much the entire bay area. Despite more clouds associated with the surge of tropical moisture, we still heat up with temperatures five to 10 degrees above normal by next week. So a ride on the temperature roller coaster as we bought them out and climb back up the other side by monday and tuesday. We will keep you updated. Thanks, paul. Time for a check of what is ahead at 6 00 as we switch over to Juliette Goodrich. Ryan, thanks. We will hear more from the voices in the campaign to oust pamela price. The mother of a son killed by a shoplifter says safety is at risk. Plus it is supposed to make one of San Franciscos busiest streets safer, but here why one experienced cyclist tells us the role of a center bike lane of the Mission District has been a complete disaster. The news at 6 00 comes up in about 10 minutes, but lets head out to matt and some sports hello, juliette the giants offense continues to put up runs but the pitching has not done them any favors over there past four series, which has not contributed any love from this fan base after failing to get an arm in july. 15 of tampas 18 hits were singles. It was San Franciscos seventh loss in their last nine games and they have allowed seven or more runs four times during that stretch. Jacob junius will be the opener tonight. Giants fans have to be wondering when they will call on kyle harrison. Farhan zaidi said that it would only be a matter of time and that there was speculation that they could get the start either today or tomorrow. When asked today, gabe kapler said all options are on the table. Despite being a rookie, when brock purdy took over last december he immediately had teammates attention. Olga carmona the strike to give spain back the lead in the 90th minute. That was the gamewinter. Spain wins a thriller 21 to advance to their firstever world cup final.
