The town has reopened and tonight thousands of people are returning home to scenes of devastation like this, but what many have also found is a local Emergency Response that sources tell us have hampered the recovery effort. Tonight, with the death toll mounting, the road to recovery is long and painful. Its haunting to live. I feel the sorrow in the way they passed. Reporter the massive fire that tore through lahaina last tuesday at a mile a minute stopped right at kailani rosss property line. Everything south of her home was torched. What separated you from this fate . I dont know. Reporter she evacuated before the worst of the fire storm hit. When you saw your neighborhood looking like this, what went on your mind . I have yet to hear the stories of the people who ran for their lives. We are so grateful. Reporter we are here on the main road that cuts through town, and this is the kind of devastation that we are seeing. We are talking miles and miles of destruction. Entire neighborhoods reduced to ash. 80 of this community was destroyed, and we know so many people were inside at the time. Fema is now searching for the missing. Of destruction. Reporter tornado, where theres a lot of building left, what we are dealing with here is a totality of destruction. Reporter the county is under investigation for its response. Most residents were not evacuated, and many waited days for help to arrive. There are more than 400 fema personnel now on the ground helping in the recovery process. Cbss Lilia Luciano spoke with survivors who have lost everything, except hope. Reporter Joe Schilling was on his way to his friend cory blues home when the fires were raging all around him. He was texting me that now there are four houses burning, and then cars exploding on the road. I said, try and get out. He said, we cant get out. We cant see. We cant breathe. Reporter blue believes her friend died in the fire, trying to help others evacuate, but his remains have not been found. What can you tell us about joe . He was known around maui as uncle joe. His name tag at work said uncle joe on it. Reporter Family Members from across the island and beyond have been giving dna samples to authorities to identify the 106 remains found in the wreckage of lahaina. The governor expects that number to rise. Only two people have been publicly identified. The families and friends of others assume their loved ones are among the dead. Like franklin trejos. She is practicing her new route after a School Bus System failure last week, forcing schools to temporarily close. It was bad. It was it was real bad. I have never experienced that. Chicago Public Schools have just over half the drivers they need, and in new york city, there is a looming bus driver strike. How have you seen the number of bus drivers decline . That is where her kids have been all week, with their schools closed until friday. I trust that the School System realizes that it was a disaster, and they are going to try to do whatever they can to fix it. Reporter school will be closed again tomorrow, as the district works on its bus plan, but there is still a bus Driver Shortage, with many leaving for higherpaying jobs. Norah . It landed safely and was then taken out of service. We turn now to a major Security Concern at the nations airports after a number of incidents with the clear travel service. The tsa is announcing new enforcement measures. Cbss Kris Van Cleave reports that while there has been no threats to any planes, it is raising questions about just how secure the 189 program is. Reporter tonight, a clear crackdown is underway after at least three Security Breaches at airport checkpoints. Clear is a Subscription Service using biometrics to verify customers identity, speeding them directly into security screening. But in at least two incidents this year, wouldbe flyers not enrolled in the program used it to go through tsa checkpoints without ever showing identification. In one case, the person used a Boarding Pass fished out of the trash. John pistole is a former tsa administrator. But as we know, it only takes one bad actor to bring down a plane, if they are a committed terrorist, so that is a concern. Reporter clear says it has especially verified over 130 million passengers, but acknowledges two clear employees violated our strict protocols. Security is job one at clear, adding the employees were fired. Others retrained.
