This area of low pressure fun fact, its a leftover system from a Tropical Storm eugene and its still sitting offshore, the big reason why weve been feeling muggy conditions and seeing the light scattered showers really trickled away all throughout the state of california. Thats what i was flying through yesterday up in the tahoe area kind of dodging the storms and continue to see that trend this afternoon but back here in the bay lets talk about local areas. Police were on the scene yesterday warning drivers to slow down as they turn towards that 280 on ramp. Following up on the fires in maui as california helpers are boots on the ground this morning. So heres your update. 110 people now confirmed dead. And this morning, that community is doubling down on some pretty tough questions about what they did and didnt do when the fire started. In fact, we want to let you listen to this very Tense Exchange between a reporter and somebody from hawaiis Emergency Management system. Listen. Do you regret not sounding the sirens . I do not. The reason why so many people said they would have been saved if they had time to escape had a siren gone off they would have known that there was a crisis emerging. And as we know, so many bodies were found in the ground as the flames you want him to give you the answer . I do but i want to let it out there. Let him finish his answer. Im sorry. The reporter holding his ground there. But theres some counterpoint in that criticism. And a potential explanation. That man went on to say the sirens are typically used for tsunamis to warp people to get away from the water and seek higher ground. So in the moments the fire raged there was worry that if they sounded the sirens, the people would have run towards the fire instead of away from it which they did. Many people just jumped in the watt e. Regardless, they have found out some of the sirens at the time werent even working. To my knowledge, at least i never experienced them in use for fires, but the sirens, some were broken. And were investigating that. Of course while were talking about this issue, we know that there are people in the midst of this story and this morning, weve got this video, these very tender and poignant moments as people who live in lahaina go home. Theyre showing us the reason why so in californians are stepping forward. In fact the people are getting to see for the first time what these fires did to their homes. Watch this. Is this the first time you are seeing this . Yeah. Its hard. Its hard to take in. We grew up here, this is home to a lot of us. Make me cry, make me cry. You know. Over 20 years i stay in my house. Theres hope. Lahaina will get back. The spirit of ohana family, the spirit of hope. The people of maui are also doing this. A symbol of hope for us this morning. If you have been to maui likely take an photo under the 150yearold banyan tree. Its the olds and largest in all of the Hawaiian Islands. Its a treasure. What are the people of maui doing while so many are still missing and while many have lost everything they own . Theyre choosing to water a tree. They believe in this little shred of hope that a little bit of care can bring life. And by the way if you have a photo from your vacations under that famous lahaina banyan tree. Wed love to show it on air. Tweet us and tag us with the kpix. You know we been saying all morning california helpers are there and really were informed by a tragedy that happened to us. In paradise. And what happened there is informing the people of maui how to rebuild. We all remember this scene behind me the camp fire. Devastating. Well, get this. People there turning pain into purpose now choosing to raise money for maui. In fact, listen to april boots on the ground right here where we live doing something to help. Gosh. I mean just like everybody else, the camp fire was devastating. Theyre a community thats very strong. And we can help them financially. And help them to rebuild in the way that they need to rebuild. And i think its very, very important that we let them tell us what they need. Bridge builder april kelly there. So important to us that we emphasize were the community station and we mean it when we say were going to celebrate the good people out there. And so many people out there this morning, gianna. Case in point, San Franciscos north beach neighborhood is bustling right now with people wanting to help those in maui. Who else is out there . Our own Shawn Chitnis as you like to say. Boots on the ground. Lets go to him. Shawn, good morning to you. Have people started showing up . I know things started around 6 00 a. M. Reporter guys, good morning. They are getting busy here and it is so cool to sigh this shipping container and all the donations that are already inside. I want to welcome over bo logo here, he is with the International Long shore and warehouse union. And hes with their Young Workers committee and you have already been busy at work. This is before you actually do your real job. But why so important to local 10 and the members here to get the donations and send them over to maui. Definitely. A lot of us have a personal connection to maui. Or the Hawaiian Islands in general. We have a lot of family or we also have a local in hawaii, local 142 and 140. And its very important that we get them these goods and try to support and help them any way we can. Reporter you guys have been working on this all week there. About 80 full inside you were telling me earlier. So at this point, what do you most need and what would you like people to come down and donate . For sure. Were looking for, you know, long term solutions. So things like generators, camping gear, air mattresses, anything like that will help and maybe like pet food and stuff like that. Stuff that will you know, provide longterm solutions versus something thats going to get in the way like we have too much clothing right now. Stuff like that. Reporter right. We were also talking about Hygiene Products and items for babies as well. What you were explaining to me earlier is that you know its going to take about a week for that shipping container to get there once theyre able to start moving it. They need to think more longterm. The information that we have so you can be a part of this process. Were located here at north point and mason. And they just started around 6 00 a. M. As we mentioned. Going until 8 00 p. M. Today and again tomorrow. So come on down and join the effort here to make an in kind donation and theres also a way to donate money as well. Guys, back to you. All right, thank you so much. And that was incredibly helpful to hear the items that they need. Like pet food. Because we have not really mentioned. 3,000 pets are displaced right now. People need their pets and their fur babies as well. I love that. Your pets are like your family. So imagine families not having if their pets are stilldisplayed right now having the comfort of the dog or cat with you. Thats got to be so hard in addition to everything theyre already dealing with. Bow. Say hi to him when you donate this morning. Bridge wilders like bo in our community creating pathways to help kids get jobs after they graduate. For chris wood its a mission to open up jobs after graduation for the students he loves. Heres lauren toms. Reporter chris wood is dusting off the shop at John Oconnell high school preparing for a new school year ahead. Its his 12th year leading the Construction Trades Program after decades getting his hands and boots dirty as a contractor. I never thought id be a teacher. This shop is kind of my happy spot. Reporter and this year, his goal is to place five students directly into a career path after graduation. At the beginning of the year, you know, seven or eight want to. By the end of the year when they realize that construction is actually work, its hard work, like you sweat. And, you know, if you dont like sweating and getting dirty and working hard, its not for you. Reporter but he has a long road ahead. On average, about two of his students join the San FranciscoCarpentry Union which has an agreement with the high school to accept woods courses as their accreditation. They vetted my curriculum and i adapted much of it from their curriculum they use from Apprentice Program and they get direct entrance. Thats the crown jewel of this program is the agreement with the carpenters. Reporter trades courses like woods are becoming increasingly popular across the country while high cost College Enrollments are shrinking. Court research from the National Student clearinghouse, construction programs have seen a nearly 20 increase in student enrollment since 2020. While culinary and mechanical trades saw roughly 12 increase each, highlighting a spike in interest among Young Students to pursue a career in trades over college. For the kid that really knows he wants to be in it. This is home. Every student in my pathway, by the time they graduate, can use pretty much a framing carpenters tool kit. Reporter chase corcoran has hired several of woods students himself. He says hes seeing more students choosing to go directly into a career path to save money and start working sooner. It helps fast track things and so a student that knows how to use some of the basic tools understands some of the basic lingo and then ultimately knows that they want to get into a trade, gives them a jump. Reporter but theres Something Special about the students he places from woods courses. A heightened spark of motivation. So getting kids that grew up in the community. That want to go to work in their community. Is huge for us. Reporter back in woods shop, chris prepares materials for a project he says students will get to work on day one. Once were there, and everybody that comes in this pathway came to this school to be in this pathway, you know, the hard work is done. You know, the words out and the right kids are showing up. Reporter eager to welcome his students back and see a years worth of growth and potential ahead. Well, College Enrollment has decreased about 4 in recent years. A four Year College Degree is skill valuable. Studies show that people who obtain a bachelors degree have a much higher earning potential at an average of 84 than those with a high school or associates degree. I would love to be a carpenter you know, growing up that was not really an emphasis for women. But nowadays i see more and more. You are learning and i know you go to home depot quite lot and you know you are finishing your kitchen as well. So you are learning the trades just at home. Yes. I love the carpentry to my husband though. I pick the colors and the tile and all the fun stuff. But no, hes very good. Thats just how he started his career through the trades. Thats right. Were all about learning more and i always learn from jess. Women in science and s. T. E. M. This morning and look this is the product. I do love women and aviation and in s. T. E. M. Were in the low 60s in santa rosa and 65 right now over the concord. Lets take a look at the marine layer as it fills its way into the bay just like the waterfall we see. Anywher
