We at Oakland Unified School district call on everybody to stop engaging in violence in all of its forms. Whatever the conflict that you might have. In the city or anywhere else, please, please stop. We know oakland has been trying to get a stop on crime and violence for years. This is the second report that has kids and parents scared for their safety. Reporter lets start with the late interest Skyline High School today. A gun was found on campus and at least one shot was fired there on campus. Two people were arrested. The good news is that nobody was actually injured in the shooting. It all started before 11 30 this morning with the reports of shots being fired at the school that is just west of the east oakland hills, the school was immediately placed on lockdown. Kids barricaded in their classrooms for 21 2 hours. Officers from the chp, Alameda County Sheriffs Office and the oakland pd started looking for evidence. That is when they found that gun. Outside, parents lined up, scared, waiting for information on when and how their kids would be release flood when it went down everyone was running, telling us, go in lockdown. I was scared. My kids are not coming here tomorrow or next week until we get information. Reporter there is a lot we dont know. The police are not releasing information on those arrested nor the details of the shooting on campus, though, one student we talked to said it was near the theater. Gun violence forced a Youth Football Team to abandon its field. Parents tell us there were two recent shootings in the area where the team was practicing. Homes and cars were hit in one incidence. The team was obviously so shaken up they played their last game over the weekend santa rosa. An hour away instead of at their home field. I know a lot of our kids are traumatized. They are ptsd. A lot of them are losing sleep. Parents are terrified to even drop their kids off now at practice. Reporter the school had been looking for a new place to practice. We did just get word they found a temporary field at madison park elementary in oakland. Good news there. You want them to be safe at school, at practice, this is all on top of another shooting where an innocent woman was actually hit on labor day. What are the police saying about that one . That womans condition luckily has been upgraded to stable condition. She was walking her dog with a friend at 12 30 in the afternoon, a gunfight erupted between two cars. One car pulled over and three suspects came out firing. The police recovered almost 30 bullet case changes at the scene. She had nothing to do with this and nothing to do with any of the shooters she was just simply passing by. Yeah, in the area. Any response from the mayor . She actually sent out a series of tweets. Community safety is her top priority and focused on prevention scaling all of that up as well as their ability to respond to 911 calls. She also tweeted let me be clear if you come to oakland and think you can pull the trigger and commit a crime we will find you and hold you accountable for the violence against residents and businesses. As for the people that live and work in oakland she tweeted i hope you will get involved in your local neighborhood counsel or community group. All stuff we have heard before. True. All right, ann, thank you. Breaking news out of burling game, we are learning of gunshots. Lanes are back open now. This happened just north of trusdale drive. One driver taken to the hospital the police so far have not confirmed that persons injuries. Emergency sirens can save lives during disasters. Today, San Francisco city leaders are finally discussing bringing them back after a long delay. We heard from one man who is happy to see their return because of where he lives. Reporter among the thousands of people who live in San Franciscos sunset district is liam mcnaly. He lives about three blocks from the ocean. When he moved to the neighborhood seven years ago he got used to hearing the faint sound of the waves and also this. This is a test. [ sirens ] and this is a test of the emergency warning sirens. It is kind of a little bit about the character and the city took the sirens off line. They have gone off line ever since. There was a time when a text alert was not as effective as the sirens would have been. I slept through the text, woke up from calls from my sister. I would of heard the sirens in they had gone on. It was on the list of things to be rehabilitated. Kept falling to the bottom of the list. Reporter he says that will not be the case any longer as the seat plans to move forward with a plan to get them back on line. After the lahaina tragedy everyone realized it was not a want to have it was a need to have. Reporter they are not just in the coastal areas but positioned all throughout the city. If is really a critical part of communicating with people on the streets in San Francisco in the event of an earthquake. If we can tell people not to go to the bay bridge but use the golden gate bridge, if we want to tell people the right thing to do that is usually the right answer to shelter in place. The official estimate for how much it will cost to get 119 emergency Warning Signals back up and running it is 5 million. They anticipate it will take a year and change to get them back up and running looking at the end of 2024. He says as long as the system actually works well, no need to spend more on a complete overhaul. If it is as simple as turning them back on and all in good shape, better not to waste and better to use what we have. Reporter at this point, he is on board. Better to be prepared if it is a good, effective system it is worth having, ready to go. Reporter even though it means he will have to get used to hearing [ sirens ] reporter once again. By the way the sirens have been around for around 70 years. In addition, supervisors are looking at upgrades codes for sprinkler systems to better prepare for emergencies. All right, now to the burners who faced a festival emergency of sorts. Check this out. At this lower. Many of them are returning home to the bay area after quite an ordeal at burning man. The exit strategy just dont get stuck in that mud for hours and be prepared to be stuck in it. Today, some of the people returning home sent us videos from their trek home. Reporter the long drive home. What normally is a two hour drive turned into an eight hour muddy ordeal just to get to the burning man gates. No, you got it, you got it. Ben sent us video and says he hopes to be back in the bay area sometime tonight. We made it through the rain, the mud, and waited out until it was safe enough to drive. And these are what our shoes look like. Alicia spent most of the day cleaning off mud. We got off a bunch of the mud. We are able to let them dry out a little bit. Everyone was sort of doing things to get out. We saw this graveyard, literally, a graveyard of rvs and cars stuck. Some people had no traction. We saw cars stuck in the mud, a uhaul, a van that maybe caught fire. So, we hope folks have help. Speaking of coming back, will they . The ones that i talked to today told me yes, after all, pictures like this seem to erase the rainstorm before the rainbow. Welcome back, burners, back to the bay area. Girl power on the football field. I mean, i have grownup watching t. J. Watt, now i am a linebacker on the field. A sport typically played by boys. The fall is starting to roll back in. Reporter they are hosting the state of play. They are focusing on youth sports, the good and the bad. They are talking about competitive youth sports, the mental and physical toll that it can take on kids as well as some of the other things like the team work that comes with youth sports. But, of course, this is something that is a talker for most people who have kids, who love to play sports. Well, another big thing that has happened this year is that california has actually added a new sport. It is for girls. It is flag football. I got the chance to go out and talk with a team in San Francisco who is getting ready to start their season tomorrow. Reporter isabella loves football. She never imagined she would get the chance to play. Now, as a sophomore in high school, she finally does. It is really cool. I mean, i have grownup watching t. J. Watt, now i am a linebacker on the field. She is one ever the girls that made the inaugural flag football team. The fighting irish was one of hundreds of varsity flag football teams that were created this year after the state officially added the sport to high school athletics. Christian rey is the head coach. I am just happy that it is here, it is is available. It extending their athletic careers. It gives them an opportunity to show what they have and it is not only a boys sport. Girls can do it, too. Reporter not only is the sport finally giving girls one effort opportunities to play one of the countrys popular sports it is giving women more opportunities to get involved. Sacred hearts entire Coaching Staff is female. Purposely we wanted it that way just so the girls can see, like, not only is the opportunity for you guys to play flag football here but there is also coaching opportunities, too. And, girls and women do that too. She believes the sport is not only going to be great for the team but believes it will inspire a whole new generation of female athletes. I think that by giving girls the ability to play at High School Levels it is going to encourage the growth of flag football and other female sports. At local levels and, you know, higher levels. The fighting irish first game is on wednesday. Their expectations are high but their excitement is even higher. Those girls will have a busy schedule. They have over 20 games just this season. This is the first season. Not even every school has a flag football team. They are very excited for the future of the sport. They really think it can be just as big of a sport as basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, all of the big women sports, now, if you are interested in hearing the Panel Discussion here about kind of that overall view of youth sports kcbs says they will air it in the next couple of days and they will also have it on their website. It is a great conversation and also good luck to those girls tomorrow. The first game, on wednesday. Reporter oh, yeah, they are very, very excited. I am not going to lie they think they are going to be pretty good i know you would not lie [ laughter ] thank you, appreciate it. All right, lets move on to weather right now. Boy, i love it when you say things are normal. That means, hey, girls out there doing sports they will be in nice temperatures, it will be warm but not this time. Early september pattern after all of the variety of what we have seen. Not just the past, you know, several months but, years. It is a mix. It is a lot that wants to stick around. The rest of this week as well. And the changes to that day to day pattern on the big picture perspective. It is eventually going to flex a little bit and build in closer for us. It will not just take over. High temperatures near friday once we warm up this weekend. Modest warm up in store. Take a look at the 10 day outlook. You can see the climb that happens in the back half of the weekend and early next week. Like every warm spell, heatwave this year it will be brief. A couple days, the temperatures running five degrees above average, drop back down heading into the majority of next week. We are getting closer to our secondary pollen season. Thursday, friday, saturday, medium high category, grass, and elm, a wed pollen. We are going to keep an eye on this deeper into ragweed season. A lot of folks suffer with that. We will keep you updated on that. Sun about to go down. The fog is spreading out the temperature downtown, temperatures, 63 degrees, high of 70. It is precisely normal for the 5th of september. Inland temperatures backing down into the 70s, Still Holding on to 83 degrees right now. Lets take a look at where we are going to be by early tomorrow morning with the fog. Spreading across the bay. Make some intrusions into the valleys and not all that shallow. It will go back up the coast. Even along the coast i think the fog will back away from the shoreline for an hour, 90 minutes or so. Take the sunshine when you can get it. Low temperatures dropping down into the 50s for most of the bay area. The warmest spots staying around 60 degrees. As the sun breaks through the low cloud cover and fog the temperatures will warm up. By noon, a lot of 70s. Inland parts of the bay area, lagging behind the valley where the fog might be a tiny bit more stubborn. 60s along the coast and the bay at lunchtime. Temperatures tomorrow, getting back up to the neighborhood of 80 degrees in the north bay. Into the 80s for the try valley and the delta and low 80s. Upper 60s, 70s around the bay with middle 60s along the coast. All of these numbers within a degree or two on either side of what is normal for the sixth of september. Temperatures warming up farther downtheline. Once again, a modest warm up for San Francisco and oakland. Lower 70s in the city by sunday and monday, the warmest days in the forecast, close to 80 degrees, falling just a little shy. In the parts of the bay area that the warm up will be more noticeable. A climb to early next week. Putting us in the middle to upper 80s. Finishing up the weekend and head into the following workweek. The hottest spots in the try valley, more likely to top 90 degrees, not that much, 93 on monday for the hottest day. It is far from recordsetting for early september.
