Reporter witnesses tell cbs news bay area three people went swimming 25 to 50 yards offshore when a shark appeared to attack one of them leaving a large pool of blood in the water. Mostly the operation is being conducted from a bluff overlooking the area where the 52yearold man was last seen. Theyre using binoculars and spotting scopes to be looking for any sign of the missing individual. Its pretty unusual here where theres an instance where theres been a swimmer attacked and just completely disappeared. Reporter dave ebert is the director of san jose States PacificShark Research center. He says in september and october there are more white shark sightings in this area because of elephant seals and sea lions giving birth. From a predator standpoint, you have young inexperienced elephant seals and sea lions going in the water. Reporter but in the 70 plus years of tracking shark attacks in california, the average has remained very consistent with three to four incidents a year. Theyll tend to hunt where it puts them at an advantage. You think about the surf, you know, sea lions cant always pick up on stuff because of all the activity. Thats where white sharks will often attack. Reporter marin county has a higher number of shark attacks compared to other counties across the state since 1950. According to trackingsharks. Com there have been at least 32 shark bites in the u. S. This far. During the summer there was one in san diego county, one near a surfer and another attacking a dolphin. On the east coast a shark attack prompted a beach closing last month. The last deadly shark attack here in california was two years ago in San Luis Obispo county. A 42yearold body border from sacramento was in morro bay when he was attacked by a great white shark. Now to san jose where Police Say Two children died after falling into a pool in san jose. A third child was hurt. This happened at an inhome daycare on fleetwood drive in south san jose near the Boulder Ridge gulf club. Just after 9 00 this Morning Police got a call several children fell into a pool. Three were taken to the hospital where two later died. Ive been shook up all day. I live right across the street, so i see them dropped off and picked up. It wrecks my heart. The District Attorneys Office and Police Homicide units are both investigating the deaths. Theyre still working to determine if any crimes were actually committed. Meanwhile Oakland Police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead last night. It led to a police chase eventually ending in two suspects being taken into custody. The shooting happened around 9 30 near 78th and arthur streets. The victim died at the hospital. Meanwhile Police Tracked down two suspects, a man and woman in the city of pleasant hill. They both have been taken into custody no, word on a motive behind this shooting. Were learning more about plans to honor the late senator Dianne Feinstein who died at age 90 on thursday night. Anne makovec has more on that and the woman who will try to fill her shoes. The governor made his pick, lafonsa butler. He is true to his word appointing a black woman to that role. She will be sworn in on wednesday on capitol hill. Until now shes served an Organization Called emilys list which is devoted to electing Democratic Women who support abortion rights. She has a deep background working for unions and is a former adviser to now Vice President kamala harris. Butler will be the only black female in the senate and the first to be openly lesbian. She tweeted today, no one will ever asure up to the legacy of senator Dianne Feinstein, but i will commit to work for women and girls, workers and unions, struggling parents and all of california. I am ready to serve. Im proud and honored to have had so many extraordinarily qualified people that expressed interest in this job and i was able to engage them in conversations, period, full stop, and i could not be more proud of lafonsas interest and qualifications and willingness to do this. This has been a source of contention. Butler currently lives and was registered to vote in maryland, but she does own a home in california and is reregistering to vote in california before being sworn in to represent our state. Her body was transported on a military flight and an honor guard secured the casket into a hearse saturday. Wednesday senator feinsteins body will lie in state at San Francisco city hall. The public will be able to pay their respects between 9 00 a. M. And 7 00 p. M. Her funeral is scheduled for thursday at herbst theater near city hall simulcast at the north light court at city hall and online. The senator will be buried at a private familyonly ceremony. First alert chief meteorologist paul heggen is tracking the warmup starting tomorrow. Paul. Yeah. We just entered october. Its going to feel more like late august later this week. Warm weather for fleet week which usually means clear skies and thats good news for the airshow friday afternoon. Those happen this weekend as well. Lets look at current temperatures. We have hot temperatures on the way. Were in the 70s right now in both san jose and los gatos, warmer spots farther inland just below 80 degrees, 78 in livermore, 79 in antioch and concord, cool around the bay, low to mid60s in both San Francisco and oakland, north bay mostly 70s, one exception, petaluma dipping into the upper 60s as of 5 00 this evening. Lets look at our temperature trend for tomorrow. The warmup is going to be underway for tuesday afternoon, highs about 3 to 5 degrees above average, which isnt that exceptional, but were in for more of a warmup as we head through wednesday, thursday and friday. The hottest days are thursday and friday when inland temperatures top out in the low to mid90s on a widespread basis. Well look at if were in for any record setting temperatures coming up. Paul, thanks so much. The blue angels are back in the bay area. The navy jets zipped through the skies over Oakland International today as they arrived for the start of fleet week. You might have heard them earlier today. A few were practicing ahead of the airshows later on this week. The demonstration crew will perform over the bay this friday, saturday, and sunday and we will bring you their friday show live right here on kpix at 3 00 p. M. We know fleet week is now a bay area tradition and the late senator Dianne Feinstein played a big role in making it that way. John ramos explains how it all came about. Reporter blue angel air shows date back to 1950 when the formation flyers buzzed low over the city. The jets were painted black back then because shortly after the show the unit was disbanded so they could serve in the korean war, but 30 years later mayor Dianne Feinstein got an idea that she said at the time was strictly business. The navy is building its fleet. San francisco is a large Ship Repair Center and we would like to have more business from the navy, if thats possible. Reporter thats when the fleet week we know of began. It was noon when a squadron from the 3rd fleet made its entrance into San Francisco bay. Reporter channel 5 provided extensive coverage with cameras in the air and on land where they got reaction from delighted spectators who werent shy about offering advice. I think its wonderful. My husband used to work in the shipyards. I dont know how old these boats are, but i presume theyre pretty old. I think its about time we get some new ones, a little faster. Reporter the blue angels were plenty fast, but in following years they were asked to stop flying so low in the city. 1982 flight leader dave carroll explains why. Dianne feinstein was the mayor. Apparently her phone rang off the wall with people complaining wanting to know why these airplanes are flying around the transamerica building and scaring everybody, but we had huge crowds and they were appreciative, too, when we actually flew the show over the bay. I can tell you that she was active with fleet week. It was her baby and she was an honorary cochair for all these years. We could go to her for advice, sometimes advice and consent because she had her hands in it. Reporter from the beginning and to this very day, San Francisco has turned out to enthusiastically welcome the young men and women of the military and Navy SpokesmanBrian Orourke says it is appreciated. Thats why San Francisco has become a legendary port visit. Those sailors and marine goes home and talk about how much of a great time they while they were here and all their friends who werent on the trip want to do it next year. Reporter there almost wasnt a next year this year. Congress passed a last minute spending bill to keep the government operating a few more months and things got pretty dicey for a while. Well, what i would say is we were prepared. We had our contingency plans, but there is nothing that feels better than these sailors and marines and the coast guard and all the other branches of the service, that theyre going to be here. I mean that is the heart and soul of fleet week. Reporter no one knows for sure how much the city has benefited from fleet week, but over the years millions have visited, likely spending hundreds of millions of dollars. So it turns out Dianne Feinstein was right. They did get more business from the navy, after all. That brings a great energy to the city as well. Yeah. Its been a Great Partnership with the Boys Girls Club, the city of San Francisco and the navy. Its an opportunity for our mens and woMens Basketball Team at academy of arts to give back to the community. Its been a great event. Its really important because for our guys and ladies on our teams, the opportunity to give back to the community that theyve been grown up through is really important and we like to give back to the community. Very cooperative for the blue angels show friday and likely going to remain pretty clear heading into the weekend with this shifting weather pattern sending warmer temperatures and clear skies, less influence of the marine layer the next several days. A big heat dome over the pacific will build toward the west coast and reduce the influence of the marine layer and boost our temperatures the next several days. Look at the tenday outlook for livermore and you see the climb were in for. Inland temperatures will be into the mid90s thursday, friday and saturday, but as fast as were climbing, were going down the other side of the temperature roller coaster man and tuesday next week, below average, an outside chance of a shower monday night into tuesday. Thats way down the line. With clear skies, well generate plenty of solar electricity, which we were today, likely the case again tomorrow, maybe a couple passing clouds wednesday, but still full solar electricity production mode, even along the coast especially wednesday and thursday with the hottest temperatures arriving thursday and friday.
