Does it seem like our lives are moving along at an ever faster pace . Take one example. The online world where algorithms feed us an endless stream of engaging content. But are we really living life faster . And is this change changing us . Pay close attention to correspondent david pogue. Reporter uhhuh. Yeah. Hang on a second. Oh, let me call you back. I have got to do a tv thing. Does it ever seem like something is going on with our Attention Spans . I mean, the worlds number one most downloaded app is tiktok, an infinite stream of very short video clips. Newspaper articles are getting shorter and they tell you how much time you will need to read them. The average length of a shot in a movie is now under five seconds. We are always holding another device, like if you are watching something, i feel like everyone has their phone next to them. Reporter these days, multitasking while you are tasking is the norm among young people. Ask counselor Lauren Barnett and her daughters zoe and sasha. My roommates are doing work on their computers, watching tv, on their phones texting people. I have a short Attention Span. I hate long classes. Yeah, i cant sit in long classes. Long meals. Yeah. Reporter where are your phones right now . Over there somewhere. Reporter is there any cell in your body thats like as soon as this is over, i am going to go over . Every cell. So my book is called Attention Span, and its based reporter sorry, hang on a second. Hello . Just kidding. Dplor yaus mark is an attention researcher at the university of california irvine. Is there any Scientific Evidence that Attention Spans are getting shorter . Yes. So, we started studying Attention Span length over 20 years ago. We would shadow people with a stopwatch and every time they shifted attention, wed click stop. In 2003, we found that Attention Spans averaged about 2 1 2 minutes on any screen before people switched. In the last five, six years, they are averaging 47 seconds on a screen. How can you get anything done if youre supposed to write a report in 47 seconds later you are switching to another app . You do it with great difficulty. Reporter professor mark maintains that shorter Attention Span has three down sides. The first is people make more errors when they do attention shifting. Second down side is that it takes longer to do something because we have to reorient to every new task, every time we shift. The third down side, maybe this is the worst of all, is that stress increases. When people are working on multiple tasks and they have to shift their attention, their Blood Pressure rises. Reporter you dont have to be a professor to guess at the cause of our greatest distract ability. Its technology, of course. Phones. Social media. Texting. Sasha barnett can attest to that. Do you guys have iphones . Yeah. Reporter go into the screen Time Settings and tell us how many unlocks in a day. You can do that . Oh, pickups. I picked it up 236 times. Oh, my god thats a lot. Reporter so is that it . Have we become the overstimulated zombies foretold in back to the future ii . I dont think our Attention Spans have changed really at all. There is no data for that. Reporter cornell psychology Professor Emeritus james cutting doesnt think its time to abandon all hope. I would point out that tsa, baggage scanners work twohour shifts. Thats intensive work for two hours. And many of us have watched teenagers play their games for many hours at a time. It strikes me that that kind of Attention Span is impressive. Reporter but what about that business of movie shots getting shorter . I mean, we have come a long way from the pacing of 2001 a space odyssey in 1968. To top gun maverick last year. Smoke it the air reporter cutting says that has nothing to do with our Attention Spans. We just know the language of movies better than our ancestors did. We have gotten over the decades a lot faster at picking up visual material. It makes sense that a filmmaker would make the shots shorter. The filmmaker doesnt need to dwell on Something Like that. Reporter cutting also points out thatino tiktok videos are very short, movies themselves are getting longer. There are a lot more movies pushing three hours now than there used to be. Of course, we have Long Form Television where things go on for eight episodes, 12 episode, whatever. Reporter one things for sure. As Lauren Barnett points out, technology is not going away. Its their whole world. There is no job where they could be without it. There is no academic environment, no social interaction unless they go to the mountains for two months. I am not an advocate of throwing away technology. What we need to do instead is learn how to live with it. Reporter gloria mark has a couple of tips for staying focused. First, when you feel the itch to change tasks, analyze why. If its just boredom or procrastination, make a deal with yourself that you will work another 20 minutes and then treat yourself to a reward. Second, picture yourself at the end of the day. What you want to have accomplished. How you want to feel. A concrete visualization of yourself sitting on the couch, you know, watching your favorite show is really good motivation. Reporter i mean, my grandfather died shy of his 107th birthday. Wow. Reporter and he told me that his parents would say, youre going to rot your brain listening to that newfangled radio. Right. Reporter for me, you are going to rot your brain watching tv. For you, its you are going to rot your brain on social media. I mean, every generation thinks that technology is ruining the next one. Thats why im hung up on notion of is it worse or just different . Depends on whether they are considering productivity or well being. They are two very different things. They will be just as productive, but their well being w with that increased productivity, there is no question that their well being is negatively impacted. So therein lies the dilemma. vo imagine a lifetime spent waiting. Waiting for a family. Waiting to be loved. Older and specialneeds shelter dogs wait the longest to find loving people. Thats why subaru created National Make a dogs day to help these special underdogs never feel left behind again. Subaru. More than a car company. Remember the things you loved. Before asthma got in the way . Fasenra is an addon treatment for asthma driven by eosinophils. Its designed to target and remove them and helps prevent asthma attacks. Fasenra is not for sudden breathing problems or other eosinophilic conditions. Allergic reactions may occur. Dont stop your asthma treatments without talking with your doctor. Tell your doctor if your asthma worsens. Headache and sore throat may occur. Tell your doctor if you have a parasitic infection. Get back to better breathing. Ask your doctor about fasenra. Your life should be one gay round of nightclubs. Thats what i thought when i married a band leader. Ever since i said i do, there are so many things we dont. Okay, again, this is a status bar. This is a search bar. Lets know the difference, okay . Social media, it can be overwhelming for a young homeowner turning into their parents. What does it mean to slide into someones dms . Mm. It sounds like a lot of fun. Okay, were not ready for that. As a team, well get there. It might be a fruit emoji, but that doesnt mean theyre talking about fruit. Oh. Progressive cant save you from becoming your parents, but we can save you money when you bundle home and auto with us. Do you really think we need 47 photos of fun dinner at pams . Yes. No. Rsv is out there. For those 60 years and older protect against rsv with arexvy. Arexvy is a vaccine used to prevent lower respiratory disease from rsv in people 60 years and older. Arexvy does not protect everyone and is not for those with severe allergic reactions to its ingredients. Those with weakened immune systems may have a lower response to the vaccine. The most common side effects are injection site pain, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and joint pain. I chose arexvy. Rsv . Make it arexvy. Most of us think of spring as the time for blossoms and blooms, but as mo rocca reminds us, come summer and fall, the sunflower shines bright. Reporter who is responsible for this . I am responsible for planting them. She is responsible for putting on facebook. Reporter this field of sunflowers is courtesy of ted and kris grinter. It looks like it goes on forever out there. And its really pretty. It is breathtaking when the whole field is in bloom and you just see that sea of yellow. Reporter that sea of yellow has made grinter farms in lawrence, kansas, one of the states most popular spots for sunflower lovers. Thousands visit each year. So tell me about the kinds of people who come here. All kinds. From everywhere. All over the world, really. One day i met somebody from australia, russia, and china in five minutes. Reporter so many people tried coming in 2016, it caused a tenmile backup on the highway. The grinters dub it carmageddon. We broke the interstate. Reporter you broke the interstate . Yes. I got a call, an angry call from the sheriff that said you have to close it down, and i said, sir, its a field. Reporter back in the 1970s, teds father hoped to turn sunflowers into biofuel. When that idea went bust, he started harvesting the seeds for bird feed. You have this field, but it only exists how long . Maybe two weeks. Reporter soon after, ted joined the family business. This was just opening up. Reporter about a million seeds are planted each summer. By early september, they are picture perfect. We heard about it online i think a lot. A lot of my friends come out here, put pictures on instagram. Reporter the couple doesnt charged a mission, but there is a donation box. Leave a dollar, take a flower. Well, i farm 2,000 acres. I dont make a living off the sunflowers. Its more of a hobby. Thats kind of taken over. If you look around and you see all the smiles on peoples faces, were making a lot of memories. Reporter fun fact. Sunflowers are heliotrope i can. As they grow, they follow the sun each day through the sky. After they bloom, they are fixed facing east. And sunflower is something of a misnomer since each head contains up to thousands of tiny flowers known as florets. 5,000 years ago they became cultivated into these giant sunflowers that we kind of see today. Reporter Caitlin Eckard says sunflowers originated in what is now north america, grown by indigenous people. She oversees Educational Programming at powell gardens near kansas city. They would use the oil for their hair, the seeds they would, obviously, eat. Reporter and the stems . Really strong. Used it as a building material, believe it or not. Reporter in the late 1800s, sunflowers flexed their political muscle becoming a symbol of womens suffrage. You see the campaign pins show a sunflower. It became that symbol moving forward. Reporter now, kansas may be the sunflower state, but sunflowers are grown across the country. North dakota actually produces the most. And take a look at these flowers in the garden state of new jersey. But only in ellsworth, wisconsin, will you find sunflowers like these. This is big bird. She is so thick. As opens up it looks like big bird. Reporter steve kaufer known as sunflower steve, also the name of his seed company. Thats going to be a cool fall color, chocolate doubleflowering sunflower. Reporter he fell in the cut flower business after losing his advertising job in 1999. Traditional sunflowers eventually became his bread and butter. But in 2007, kaufer noticed a rogelberg sunflower growing in one of his fields. Its got golden maroon in it. Reporter he took 12 soeds from that lone flower and planted them the next year. Really ugly looking. They looked terrible. One looked like the parent plant and this other this dark maroon with a little bit of lemon in it. We take the hightech equipment. Reporter getting these flowers to reproduce is no small feat. Couldnt you get some bees to do this . I do have bees to do this. I dont want them to share it with the other flowers. Reporter controlling. Experimentation like this has given birth to blooms like gigi, lamar, marly and maleficient. Are you like a doctor, a Mad Scientist . You know, i think i have a natural curiosity to think what if. Reporter sunflower steve now only sells seeds and in limited batches. Mostly to home gardeners. Whats the only place in the world they exist . I mean, when you have something nobody else has, you have an advantage. Its taken 15 years to get there. Reporter kaufer puts his original sunflowers to good use, making murals that have become hits on instagram. As a child of the 80s, i love the pacman. Yeah. Reporter thats great. For easter, the jesus fish. And when t
