Now at 5 30, turmoil on capitol hill, republicans still dont have enough support to elect a new house speaker. How congress could still provide additional aid to israel. Oakland International Airport planned a big expansion to meet growing demand, why one neighboring community is saying no way. And the morning earthquake that rattled the east bay provided a good reminder that a major earthquake could happen at any moment. It has now been 34 years since the 1989 deadly loma prieta earthquake. Many californians remember the day vividly, others were not born yet, and may have never experienced a large earthquake. Everybody in our state has been told to be prepared for the next big one. Our Jocelyn Moran is at csu east bay, which is in a unique position when it comes to earthquakes. Reporter we are in front of his east bay sign on campus, in a parking lot. To my right is where the fault lies. Behind the other side of campus is for the hayward fault lies. We hear a lot of concern around the hayward fault. We spoke with a professor today about why it is important to be reminded of where we live. There will be an earthquake, probably within a lot of our lifetimes, i would guess within the next 30 years , everybody living in the bay area will experience a large earthquake. Reporter straight to the point, dr. Luther strayer is a structural geologist and a professor of geology at csu east bay. He has really been paying attention to the hayward fault since 2013. The records interval in the hayward fault is somewhere between 140 and 170 years. We are sort of in that range right now, from 1868. Reporter so we are due for one. He tells us the one expected to hit it estimated to be around a 6. 8 magnitude. It can be easy to forget about it on a daily basis. Some students know about it. That is what they told us in orientation, an earthquake prone area. Reporter other student had no idea there campus sits between two faults. Right there, behind there is a deep creek, it goes down about 80 feet, to a very steep valley. Then it runs , right there, where you can see those cars, right under their, right up this way, up to eden hospital , up to lake should go. It runs up to about where Joaquin Miller is, then emerges again with the hayward fault. Reporter he tells the hayward fault runs through the cemetery before getting to campus. So the schimmel fault is not active at our timescale right now, but we would not be surprised to see it reactivated. As during a hayward fault event, it would not be surprising to see the schimmel fault move as well. Reporter currently, a building is under construction right across from the Science Building where we spoke with strayer. When they started building, i was curious, but they drilled down, they put tears down there , and rebar, filled with concrete, i am pretty sure they made it down to bedrock. And you can see the diagonal bracing, there, big pieces of steel. So this thing should stick around. I am less sure about this one. Reporter strayer says predicting when i think will happen is impossible now, but experts can tell us about the faults around us. If it does happen around here, downtown hayward will be devastated. There are a lot of brick buildings down there. It is going to be ugly. Reporter strayer also said it is important to have a kit that will allow you to survive several days. In his kit, outside of his home, he has bottled water, food, sleeping bags, and even a tent. Dr. Strayer says there are two other things to keep in mind if the big one does happen on a windy day, it could be the firestorm that ends up being the big story. And if water mains break, people could have to get water from trucks for a long time. Now to washington, a live look over capitol hill where the house of representatives still does not have a speaker. Two weeks after Kevin Mccarthy lost the job. The house voted again today, and for a second time, Ohio Republican jim jordan failed to get enough votes to win the gavel. Jordan cofounded the House Freedom caucus and is considered a far right ally of former president trump. Nearly two dozen republicans voted for other house gop numbers. Jordan says they will vote again until they have a speaker. I have already proven i can get, from the most conservative members of the more modern numbers. It is clear he does not have the votes. Obviously, it is up to him if he wants to put it to a third ballot, i think you will see even more folks dropping off. The ohio congressman said he plans to file a motion to make speaker pro tem Patrick Mchenry the permanent speaker, so the house can pass aid to israel. The man who disappeared from the screen. I will say a lot of people are going to be playing hooky tomorrow. I have a feeling, a lot of sick calls, i just cant make it in, and they will be at the beach. People in line will say, yeah, i will go to the airconditioned office, that sounds fine, actually. Mid90s outside . That sounds like inside time to me. Big picture pattern, the heat done has definitely taken over. Temperature took a big step up today, the heat wave will peak tomorrow, then we go right down the other side of the temperature roller coaster over the next couple days. Saturday, we will be below average temperatures. This heat dome not only warms the temperature, also traps air pollution. Some haze on the horizon, but groundlevel air quality was okay. Expense tomorrow to just barely tip into the unhealthy for sensitive groups range in land in the east bay, and Santa Clara Valley that is what tomorrow is a spear the air alert day. As temperatures drop, air quality will improve, back to the good category across the board by saturday and sunday. Right now, you can see the haze looking east from mark hopkins hotel. Temperatures and sentences go just below 80 degrees with latest update. Most temperatures still in the 80s, still 92 in santa rosa , just want to be below the high recorded a little while ago. Later tonight, temperatures will drop off pretty quickly, the sun goes down around 6 30, so we get 13 hours of darkness for heat to escape into space. Temperatures end up in the upper 50s and low 60s, a little above normal for this time of year, but really not bad considering how warm today was and how hot tomorrow will be. Is take a look at forecast highs for tomorrow, records threatened across the bay area, 95 in san jose, the record is 91, likely to fall. 98 for morgan hill, the hotspot, low 90s in d say, mid90s down the peninsula and redwood city, even Half Moon Bay will get up to around 80 degrees. The offshore breeze will be like, but enough to push warmer air toward the coast. Temperatures will get up to close to 90 in San Francisco, and actually hit 90 in oakland, while inland in the north bay likely to reach mid90s on a widespread basis. Also threatening record territory there. Lets look at overall heat risk, part of the equation. Even this time of year, with near record high temperatures, heat risk is not really very high category, and only a couple spots shaded in red here reach the high category, most of us have moderate heat risk, meaning you would just had to abandon all precautions to be in any kind of actual danger from this heat. Just exercise common sense, stay hydrated, find some shade if not airconditioning during the hottest part of tomorrow, then even the moderate risk mostly disappears from the map for friday. How close will would be to records . Lets look at a half a dozen different cities across the bay area, look how closely we will be. Within a couple degrees in many spots, just for three degrees below and sentences, one to be below in oakland, tying record and redwood city, likely breaking record in san jose, and also breaking record in santa rosa, and getting very close to record territory in livermore. We will be here to other due tomorrow evening whether any of those records actually fell. The temperature wont be this hot for very long, it will drop quickly, 10 degrees from tomorrow to friday and again from friday to saturday. Then we just hover near normal temperatures for most of next week. As cooler air moves in, we will see a chance of showers, most inland parts of the bay area most easy to get chance except for the north bay, best chance will be around the bay and along the coast, saturday night into sunday. Not a guarantee, and not likely to amount to much in terms of rental accumulation, but at least a chance. We take those chances whenever they present in late october, just a typical autumnal pattern for most of next week. Time to check what is ahead at 6 00, we switch to Juliette Goodrich. There was a certain bug you get after finishing 18 holes on a Beautiful Day but i dont have a study or statistic, here, but it seems most of us are golfupset at one point in our lives. That label does not begin to describe one Northern California golfer who has the itch. Reporter hundreds of paul sullivans memories can fit into a couple boxes. These are the scorecards i have kept from every single golf course i have played from about 1995 on. Reporter for the last 15 years, he set out on a goal to play every single public golf course in Northern California. 284 of them. That is everything from a nine dollar golf course called shelter cove up to pebble beach at 700 a round or whatever it is. Reporter the idea came to him when he realized he was sick of playing the same dozen or so courses. So i just started crossing them off, using a green felt pen, crossing them off as i went. Reporter now retired, it still feels like a fulltime job, always on the go from course to course. But he has learned that there is something much more important than the score at the end of the round. For me, it is the
