Up next, after a record Setting Winter last year, could we be in for a repeat of those epic storms . The new outlook. Coming up in sports, 49ers injury update, will Christian Mccaffrey be good to go for monday night football . Kyle shanahan did not tip his hand. Plus, it might still be the preseason, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now predicting above average temperatures this winter, they are expecting strong el nino conditions, meaning potential for stronger winter storms as well. First alert chief meteorologist paul heggen and he was a close look at what this means. If you like you talk to one person they say it means more rain, and others say not so fast. Typically, el nino can go either way for the bay area. It will definitely be an el nino winter, lets start with that part of the forecast. It is just analysis of what is happening now. We can bring in our Virtual Reality globe, and focus on sea surface temperatures. You can see the oranges, reds, even purple along the equator, just west of south america, stretching far into the pacific. That is the fingerprint of el nino, those abnormally warm sea surface temperatures. It is not just one ocean water, it is the effect it has on the odyssey are above those warm oceans, it displays the typical weather patterns, like if you added a new boulder to a stream, it affects things further downstream, it rearranges how the gestures behave around the rest of the world, particularly over north america. Lets take a look at what we typically associate with those el nino conditions during the winter months. Around the bay area, it could go either way. This is the map of typical el nino patterns across the country. For the bay area, we are on the edge of that wetter than average pattern. Typically, el nino is associated with wet conditions in southern california, as the subtropical get stronger, and carried into the Southern Tier of countries. That is part of the outlook for winter as well. This years outlook does not include a significant chance of wet conditions for southern california, it has a better chance of wetter than average conditions for the bay area, partially because of el ninos influence, but there were also wet conditions elsewhere in the pacific, the atlantic, and the indian ocean, so we have all this once building up, largely due to the impact of climate change, that is confusing the typical el nino pattern, displacing it a bit farther north. This does not mean a repeat of last years barrage and atmospheric rivers. It is a relatively modest signal toward wetter than average conditions. Just 100 of an inch would qualify for wetter than average, so it could be significantly above or just barely above typical wintertime around the bay area. We will keep an eye on things as it evolves over the next several months. In the short term, the heat dome will lose its grip on the bay area, we see big changes over the weekend, as the heat dome will be replaced by a storm system for tracking to our north, sending most most of its moisture toward the pacific northwest. This is normal for this time of year, but it will be cooler and somewhat breezy this weekend. Plus we have a chance of a couple showers trying to make their way into the bay area. It is a modest chance of rain at this point, 30 to 40 saturday night into sunday, the best chance, also typical for october, is along the coast and north of the golden gate, maybe around the bay as well. Lets take a look at the forecast high for tomorrow, not as hot as today, we did climb into the 90s, new records in san jose, santa rosa and napa, low to mid 80s tomorrow, in the east bay, around the bay must closer to normal for this time of year, same along the coast, returning to 60 than half moon bay. Also returning to upper 60s in San Francisco and low 70s for oakland, and the north may take a big step down. Santa rosa was at 96 degrees today, going to top that short of 80 tomorrow, a rapid change. Even more cooldown is in store ahead for the weekend. Lets look at the sevenday forecast. Temperatures drop another 10 degrees from friday to saturday. Then they kind of hover on sunday, a 10 degree warmup monday, we return closer to normal temperatures for wednesday and thursday, but the roller coaster ride is not quite done with us. The warmup that kicked in monday and tuesday is going to be of a lower magnitude than the current heat wave we are enduring, and in the meantime, we have a chance of showers to keep us occupied arriving for the second half of the weekend, on sunday. I wouldnt rearrange your outdoor plans, along the coast, the northbay, and maybe around the bay in San Francisco had a chance of showers, but no all they want to.
