Im nicole zaloumis. And we have a lot of weather on this thursday. We went from a cute family to not so cute weather outside. Yeah, lets look outside live right now on this thursday morning. Its a first alert weather day. So that means that we need to be on alert. Think of the rain that you are going to see in the bay area as kind of a much lighter version of what our friends in tahoe will be getting. Its packed with snow. In fact, looking live right now at the sierra and the expectation the storm will blanket the area with record amounts of snow. Its going to get unsafe and fast. So the warnings are already out and in fact, ladies, caltrans to all of us this morning, just stay off the roads. And the roads other than that one car going there do look like ghost towns. They say the reason they want us all off the roads, not only for our own safety but for the safety of the crews who are working to keep them clear. Its pretty much their job to keep the road open. At all times. And i mean they definitely have safety protocols in place. You know . And most of the time, you know, these guys are in vehicles and at least theyre in an enclosed environment. Theyre not exactly outside, you know, necessarily. All the time. There are impacts we have heard there was a popular Music Festival planned in the sierra and apparently it was canceled because of the storm alert. So lets bring jessica in. Jessica, you were working with a whole team of o meteorologists in our region. And really the fastmoving wind that comes and the huge dump and just 24 hours, that also means risk of avalanche. Absolutely. And you know, they just got upgraded from a winter storm warning to a blizzard warning due to some really key ingredients. Thats going to cause a lot of issues up there in the sierra within the next couple of days starting today alone. They are already under that blizzard warning. That lasts until sunday and were going to dive into that in just a second. But lets start off back here in the bay as we wake up on this weather day with a lot of active conditions around the corner for us. Clear skies over san jose and we are seeing rain in the forecast throughout this next couple of hours start to ramp up starting along the coastline and moving its way inland especially into the afternoon hours today. Were sit in the 50s right now near San Francisco. Today our daytime highs are going to feel a little bit cooler than yesterday. Yesterday was a gorgeous day and i was out and at one of the parks here in San Francisco just seeing everyone out and enjoying the sun. Soaking it in. Thats not going to be the case within the afternoon hours today. As we see the shower start to roll in. Heres our weather headlines. Light rain arrives for us early this morning. And it starts to ramp up moreinto this afternoon with some gusty conditions too. Another thing i want teamings the showers are going to last as we head into this weekends forecast and the showers are going to turn into some heavy snow as it moves its way off into the east and impacts the friends over in the sierra. As we head into next week well continue to see more unsettled weather but well get to that in just a minute. Heres what it looks like right now on the first alert doppler and light showers trickling in from offshore in the Marin Headlands part of the system thats moving its way in. A strong area of low pressurebringing in snow to the sierra and rain for us back here in the bay. Lets time this out. I want to show you how much rain we can expect in our local communities and how much snow theyre expecting to see up in the sierra. Teaser real fast. Anywhere up to around 10 feet. More on that coming up. Jessica thank you. Lets talk about the roadways right now. And were getting to the 6 00 hour, more volume on the roadways as traffic patterns go for thursday. Right now its still looking pretty good on most of the east bay freeways with the exception of the altamont pass. And the bay bridge. Those are our hotspots light now. Live look ear at the bay bridge, metering lights are on and you can see its already busy ride for anyone heading into San Francisco. Were tracking brake lights across the upper deck into the city. And there is a broken down big rig on westbound 580. Its causing a big mess coming out of tracy with some pretty hefty travel times. So if you travel or commute through the area you are going to need some extra time to get to work this morning. For people already in the sierra, we hope you have stocked up with supplies. We sent our kelsi thorud to truckee ahead of the storm where just about everyone was out and about to prepare themselves while they still could. Reporter People Living in the Higher Elevations of the sierra are making sure they have everything they need to safely ride it out. Well, were chopping firewood. Making sure we have shovels. Making sure we have all the food we need. Were all set. What they said is this the biggest three day dump since 2020 and we were here for that weekend. It was march 13th weekend. Now under a blizzard warning as areas like myers can see anywhere up to around 4 to 6 feet of snow stretching all the way down along the Mountain Range into placerville. About 2inches of snow for them. Whats happening right now is theres a storm building in from offshore and its going to impact us too starting this morning with some light rain moving in from offshore. Some gusty conditions this afternoon. But were keeping a close eye on the sierra as this is one of the strongest storms we have seen so far this year up there. Above 5,000 feet. 5 to 10 feet of snow. To add to that the wind gusts anywhere up to close to hurricaneforce winds. Around 100 miles per friday forecast. Our saturday forecast. And lingering into sunday as well as that starts to really break apart. So lets kind of time this out for us back here in the bay. If you are not thinking about going to the sierra anyways, this is what its looking like for us in our local communities. Fremont, fairfield, all the way over into napa, about 0. 01 of rain by the 11 00 hour this morning. Look front sweep throughout the bay area. And with that were going the see some gustier winds at times and some rainier conditions too. The isolated heavy pockets of rain could trickle into the community. So take it slow out there on the roads heading into this afternoon. Well continue to watch rainfall widespread throughout the bay area with on and off showers in the friday afternoon forecast with it getting heavier saturday morning into the afternoon hours there. Like i said this shower setup starts to taper off as we head a little bit into the sunday evening, monday morning forecast but more unsettled weather lasts into next week. So its worth noting there are a lot of changes here in the bay area. Within the next couple of days. And yesterday gosh, i was out at a park and i was looking at all of everyone around in their blankets enjoying the sunshine. Thats not the case for us as we look outside our window today, its a lot cooler and its a lot cloudier. And were going to continue to see more rain in the forecast throughout the afternoon hours today. So even though we are starting off dry down into the santa clara valley, for example, or throughout most of the communities, yes, its going to look a lot different within the next three, four, five hours or so. Now the showers last as we head into this weekend and another thing i want to mention, yesterday we were talking about upper 60s, lower 70s in our inland forecast. This wind were dropping down in the low 50s. A lot cooler weather. Have the jackets ready to go and also the Umbrella Holding on tight to it because its going to get pretty breezy as we head into next couple of days. But again, its calm now when that wet weather really starts set until thats when its going to get really busy. But heres the hotspots to look out for. Bay bridge this morning, the metering lights are officially on. And thats the slow ride heading into San Francisco. You can see it stays crowded across the upper deck as folks work over into the city. They just cleared this big rig off of 580. It was causing a really big backup and my travel times are checking in about 68 minutes but you hop in the car you will get the favorite app up and kind of calculate the travel time from where you are. Know its slow from tracy to at least north flynn. A big chunk of the freeway showing a lot of brake lights this morning. So definitely plan for that. You can also plan for a nice ride across the golden gate bridge. Just showing you a couple of other perspectives for that morning commute. No fog to slow you down. But again, that wet weather when that settles in we know how that goes on the freeways. Definitely have the umbrella handy and give yourself a few extra minutes later on today as you travel home and right now the san mateo bridge is looking problem free as you head towards 101. Shawn . Shes out in myers with more conditions on those roads and all the conditions out there. How are things looking right now. Rachel . Reporter good morning, yeah, we moved from caltrans station where they had salt and sand and plows and scrapers to a gas station now. Where weve seen a few people coming in. Gassing up. Deep depressurizing the tires and basically letting the air out of the tires to get more traction. You can see the mountainside here and look at the clouds that are coming over the top of the hill. Absolutely beautiful. But that is going to meanblizzardlike conditions and 8 to 12 feet of snow were hearing in the bay area, it could be the biggest storm of the season. Those living in the sierra say they are prepared and some making lastminute purchases. To stock up on supplies in case the power goes out. Caltrans is warning folks to prepare for all possibilities and stay off the road. Bring supplies with you. Bring flashlights and make sure your cell phone is charged. Make sure you have blankets. All it takes is either one or two spinouts. Or if, you know, we get these whiteout conditions, we have to hold traffic and shut the road down. Reporter many sending a message to skiers that the snow is going to be there. And theres no point in heading in now. Wait till next week. Its going to be safer.
