Busiest day of the primary campaign also known as super tuesday. While some voters have mailed in their ballots or will hit the polls tomorrow, others might take a little convincing. Our lauren toms is here with how Community Members might encourage their neighbors to cast their ballots. So far the Elections Department is reporting just about 15 of eligible voters in San Francisco submitted their ballots so far, on track to potentially be a very low voter turnout for the primary. I spoke with one person who is on a mission to not only encourage, but help areas with low voter turnout submit their ballots this primary. Are you registered to vote . Reporter step by step and door by door, brandy bowen is encouraging residents of the bayview neighborhood to vote in the primary election. Voting might not be like the magic wand that can keep us all here, but its like a really powerful tool. Reporter shes part of an Advocacy Group that aims to support black and brown communities. The area surrounding keith street has one of the lowest voter turnout rates in the city. Its also home to 22 of the citys black community. Over 70 of adults in San Francisco are registered to vote according to the department of elections, but here Voter Registration hovers around 50 and bowen says it could be due to factors like voter fatigue. We have an education crisis. We have a safety crisis and we have so many different economic housing crises that we want them to feel like they have a voice and they have a power, have power in impacting and creating the change that they want to see perform. Reporter but voting holds a deeper weight for bowen who says she casts her ballot each year with the reminder that her great grandmother once couldnt. And eventually when she was able to vote, she was going out every election. So it was super important to me then and i think even more important to me now. Reporter voter turnout for the 2022 primary election hovered around 46 citywide according to the Elections Department compared to the last general election in 2020 that saw over 80 voter turnout. Bowen says voting in the primary is just as important for residents to vote on ballot measures that can change city policies and particularly for people of color to make sure their voice is heard on policies for housing and public safety. Sometimes feels like im going to the ballot to impact and change a city that i might not be welcomed in or a family that im growing might not be welcomed in in the next few decades. So just letting people know that what they do at the ballot is a tool to keep us here. Reporter each voter guide handed out is a step towards protecting democracy and protecting this community. Do see the impacts of what were doing, but, you know, theres always more work to be done. Reporter making sure voices across the city are heard in this election. Voter fatigue and weather, confusion can play a big role in voter turnout. Our weather team tells me tomorrow looks similar to today with a bit of overcast, but no reason to not make it to the ballot box. A common misconception is primaries just narrow down candidates, but this year there are some significant decisions being made on the ballot in the form of propositions just like any other election. One fun of the made this year by the San Francisco Elections Department is the new sticker for those who voted made by a local artist. Keep your eye out to get one of those tomorrow. Yeah. You got to get the sticker. Thats the number one sticker not to mail it in. I voted. Yeah. Wear that with pride and collect them. What are they expecting the turnout to be . In the primary it typically hovers around 40 unlike a general election which hovers closer to 60 to 70 . This 15 number is not what the Elections Department was hoping for. Everybody has a chance to get out tomorrow. Theyre hoping for a much bigger turnout. Every vote counts even if you think your voice cant be heard. It can. Exactly. You got to get that sticker. We got to wear it tomorrow. Thanks, lauren. Now to a developing story, Vice President Kamala Harris is calling for an immediate ceasefire in gaza for at least six weeks. Straight ahead in sports, High School Basketball is our focus. Were on the eve of a big one. What does the Number One High School what do i see in peter dixon . I see my husband. The father of our girls. I see a public servant. A man who served under secretary clinton in the state department. Where he took on the epidemic of violence against women in the congo. I see a fighter, a tenacious problemsolver. Who will go to congress and protect abortion rights and our democracy. Because he sees a Better Future for all of us. Im peter dixon and i approved this message. I launched our campaign at this union hall. Lets go win this thing then we hit the road and never stopped. When Peter Dickson led my platoon into combat in afghanistan, he cared about two things completing the mission, and making sure his marines came home. And we all did. Petes always fought for what he believes in, and i know hell do the same in congress for affordable housing, the rights of women, and the democracy he swore to protect. Because helping people who need it has always been petes mission. And i know hell get it done. Next Generation Veteran Fund is responsible for the content of this ad. Paul, most of us got a little break from the rain today, which was nice, but you look at those clouds and youre going this is not going to last long. They look ominous. Yeah. Much scarier looking than they actually are producing. There are just a few light showers this evening mainly over the north bay and a lot of us did stay dry. Its going to be a very similar pattern tomorrow, a couple showers here and there, but one storm system is losing its influence over the bay area while the next one is lurking offshore. This is going to be a troublemaker. Its cut off from the main flow of weather. So its going to meander closer to the coast. These tend to defy predictions. Right now it does look like showers become likely again by wednesday, but theres time for that to change. Now we have a few light showers mainly over the north bay. This is stuff adding up to a couple hundredths of an inch of rain, barely more than a trace. Well see the chance of offandon showers continuing tonight into tomorrow, but a few radar freckles here and there, maybe a few hundredths inch of total rain and then theres a better chance of showers in the bay area wednesday morning, light to moderate rain, no torrential downpours, but enough to wet down the roads for the wednesday morning commute and adding up maybe a few hundredths inch once again of additional rainfall. You really overachieve, you might pick up closer to a quarter inch of total rain out of this one. Thats not enough to lead to any significant flooding threat. Well be looking farther down the line at still more chances of rain into the weekend forecast because it wouldnt be a weekend in 2024 without a good rain chance. Thats saturday, mostly dry out sunday and another chance of rain heading our way early next week. It might be the last one in a while, but a lot can change. Seeing a little sun as we look towards downtown from treasure island, topping out mid to upper 50s to low 60s. As we see a drier pattern taking hold a couple days later this week, it looks like well warm up for a couple days. Tonight 40s across the board, highs tomorrow with the clouds still hanging out and a chance of showers here and there are a little below average, 65 degrees in santa rosa, one of the warm spots on the map, temperatures inland in the east bay mostly low to mid60s, a couple degrees below normal, upper 50s along the coast for half moon bay, barely above 60 degrees for San Francisco and temperatures in the north bay a little cooler because you have the better chance of some of those sporadic showers on tuesday. Lets look at the sevenday forecast which does include more rain chances farther down the line. Ill stand in between the part of the forecast a lot of us are looking forward to, thursday and friday, a mix of clouds and sunshine thursday and a lot of sunshine friday. Mid60s is kind of the middle ground for temperatures, but some inland spots get maybe close to 70, something to look forward to before we get into a half rainy weekend. Temperatures will be below normal heading into the second full week of march with the next rain chance looming by monday. Time for whats ahead at 6 00. We switch over to july yet. A washed out road in the Oakland Hills is getting worse with every storm. Neighbors have been asking the city to fixes the road for years and worry about the danger of waiting too long. Plus the high profile effort to recall Alameda County d. A. Pamela price is now colliding with a ballot measure that could change the recall rules. Well look closer at the possible impact. All that and nor is coming up in about ten minutes. But lets go vern and some sports. Reporter all right, jules. Good evening from the home of the number one Boys Basketball team in the bay area. Theyre getting ready for a big one tomorrow night against number two, reardon to play for the state title. I would say it is the game to see in Northern California this year and its being play one mile from our school. Reporter theyre expecting a sellout crowd tuesday night and one thing is for sure, salesion will live up to its nickname. We have a little pride when we put that jersey on. Reporter the pride have lost only one game all season thanks to a swarming defense. Were top five and dont have a player averaging double figures. Nobody cares who has a really good game. As long as we get the win, thats all we really care about. Reporter the team is two wins away from their first open Division State title in program history. Weve been talking about getting to where right now for the past year and a half, two years. So to actually be this close to getting there is really a blessing and honor. Its a group that deserves every accolade that comes their way. We know it wont be easy, but it would be a lot of fun if we could get a couple more wins. That would be great. Lets have a good practice. Reporter game time tomorrow 7 00. Lets switch gears and talk about the 49ers where Kyle Shanahan has been busy adding to his Coaching Staff on the defensive side of the ball and the newest member was a long time rival. You got to tell me right off the bat, is it a little painful to see the 9ers in this game . No, no. Reporter k. J. Wright played a decade with the seahawks. He is joining the 49ers staff as an assistant linebackers coach. Now the warriors return home from a 31 road trip. I dont think steve kerr will spend too much time looking at the tape from sunday. You flush it down the toilet and we had a great road trip. Reporter the dubs lost by 52 points, their fourth worse loss in franchise history, so bad steph curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson didnt even play in the second half. Reporter when did you guys decide steph, klay and draymond werent returning to the game . It was when they went up 42 late First Quarter or 56 early second quarter, somewhere in that range. Reporter man, that afternoon in boston is something they certainly want to forget. Dont forget this, though. You want to see some top quality basketball, you go out to Contra Costa College tomorrow night. Salesian and reardon for the right to go to state. Thats the future of the game. You want to see where the next stars are. Thanks, vern. Still ahead at 5 00, a california scientist working to make sure the Beauty Industry reflects its customers, how shes hoping to show that true beauty can come in every shade. Youll be surprised to actually understand the spf value on a bottle is tested from people with lighter skin tone. Overflowing with ideas and energy.
