Im annemarie green. New York City Police descended on Columbia University one day after propalestinian demonstrators stormed a campus building and took control. Officers entered through a secondstory window and cleared it out floor by floor. The universitys change of heart came after realizing the protests were coopted by professional outside agitators. Just look at the damage inside, though. Columbia releasing this video showing overturned stacked furniture and broken windows. Police department, you have been warned as per city college to leave the campus. Just blocks from that scene there was another violent confrontation between police and propalestinian protesters at the city college of new york. After order was restored, the mayor replaced the palestinian flag the protesters had put up with americas stars and stripes. Cbs jarred hill is joining us now from columbia with more on the wild turn of events. Good morning. Reporter good morning, annemarie. Within the past 30 minutes or so Police Expanded the barricaded perimeter around columbia saying that only now students who live on campus as well as essential staff can go on that campus. Thats the only people allowed after that dramatic scene last night where we saw those protesters brought out. Confrontations overnight as nypd officers moved in on Columbia Universitys main campus, climbing through a window to get protesters out of hamilton hall. Inside police cleared chairs used as barricades, searching for the propalestinian demonstrators who have occupied the Academic Building since early tuesday. We are part of a movement. Reporter Columbia Universitys president asked the nypd to come in and clear out the protesters saying occupying the building and the encampment pose a clear and present danger. School officials as well as local officials are blaming outside agitators for the rise in tensions. These people are not columbia students. Theyre not affiliated with the university, and they are working to escalate the situation. Reporter police say they arrested dozens of protesters. In whats become a national movement, demonstrators are calling on universities to cut business ties with israel, critical of its war on hamas in gaza. Earlier tuesday, police and protesters also clashed at the university of North Carolina chapel hill and at the university of southern florida. [ chants ] back at columbia, Police Say Students still at the camp could be charged with trespassing or disorderly conduct. For those who broke into hamilton hall, more serious charges like burglary. Now meanwhile, at Brown University in rhode island theres an apparent agreement there. The student protesters have agreed to remove their encampment with the administrators saying they would haute a vote in october considering divesting from israel. Back to you. So this is a scene that is significantly different from what we are seeing here at Columbia University right now. There are literal fights that were happening around the campus of ucla yesterday. These protesters and counterprotesters really fighting apparently each other in this situation. Our station out in california and los angeles is reporting that at least one person was taken away in an ambulance. We dont have any information now on the extent of their injuries, but that also really showcased how much. This morning secretary of state Antony Blinken is in israel for talks as the Biden Administration presses hamas to accept a deal to release some hostages in return for a temporary ceasefire.
