Activity where perhaps it would just bring the community closer. Weve also got an update on one of the San Jose Police officers who was shot in the line of duty this week while responding to a Domestic Violence call. Good evening, im brian hackney. And im andrea nakano. We thought we were past these weekend storms, but Mother Nature had other ideas. We saw some pretty solid downpours across the bay area today. This is what it looked like in a time lapse this morning on bay area bridges. Definitely enough to cause some problems on the road. Like this wreck we caught on the bay bridge. You can see the tesla in the far left lane hydroplane, crossing all lanes of traffic before smashing into the barrier on the side of the bridge and spinning into the path of an oncoming truck. The two right lanes of the bridge were shut down for a few hour, but chp says no one was injured. And for more on the weather and whether or not to expect more, heres darren peck. There were multiple flood advisories across the entire bay today and this storm did some real impressive thing for rainfall totals. Were going to look at that coming up in the next visit. For right now, i want to get you ready for tomorrow. And were coming to the end of this system. If you look at first alert doppler, there are some light scattered showers on here. Very hit and miss. When we play it through on the futurecast, this gets us into tomorrow morning. Those pretty much disappear by the time we get past sunrise tomorrow. So were out of first alert status now. Any rain that falls tonight is going to be short lived. Even though tomorrow is going to be blue sky and no rain, it is still going to feel cool. Let me show you why i would say were not completely done with this system, because tomorrow the winds gust again in the afternoon to like 20 or 30 miles an hour, thats a pretty strong onshore wind. Couple that with the fact that daytime highs are not getting out of the upper 50s and low 60s, so its kind of cool tomorrow. But were done with the rain. Were going to talk about how these totals stack up, and ive got to show you the warmup coming our way for the later part of this next week, very different setup. For now, guy, back to you. The early rain in san jose did not stop Cinco De Mayo festivities today. Drivers showed off their cars in front of the sap center. 300 will appear in the lowrider parade tomorrow, just the second lowrider parade in san jose since the ban on cruising was lifted in 2022. We talked to one of their owners who made the fourhour drive from porterville. We heard san jose is really tight for the culture on cruising out here and just enjoying everybodys builds. We wanted to come out here and show what we got in porterville. This year will be the first dwleer the San Jose Police department will have their own lowrider in the parade. Police say to expect road closures along east santa clara street from highway 87 to 101, including sections of south tenth, south fourth, and south market streets. And in east san jose, streets the allen rock avenue to tully road near 680 could see closures as well. Well, oakland is thinking about keeping all Cinco De Mayo celebrations safe this year, especially after the chaos they had last year. Amanda hari explains what theyre doing to try to keep things under control. Reporter the oakland Police Department is deploying dedicated officers to deter and also break up any sideshows that may happen this Cinco De Mayo. This intersection behind me here, tenth and oak, was the site of a large sideshow last year. A violent and chaotic scene last Cinco De Mayo, what started as a sideshow resulted in this car going up in flames. Then another car repeatedly plowing into it as a crowd watched. It was just one of several sideshows over the holiday last year. So i could see why it would be like, its dangerous. Reporter cici was taking her dog for a walk around lake merritt as Oakland Police started to set up a dui checkpoint and sideshow ahead of the holiday. The police very active right now. Its it was all throughout the lake, and thats not usually the case. Reporter she says shes not just concerned about the sideshows but worries things can get more out of control if police get involved. I feel like not that safe. I feel like i mean, if i were to see a show on the street i would just be like, okay, let me just mind my own business, but with like some police activity, you never know what happens or what could happen, like some gun violence or Something Like that. Reporter this man moved to oakland from zimbabwe. He says he doesnt mind when people celebrate Cinco De Mayo by participating in sideshows. Its a really big thing in south africa, and i think its the most exciting thing ever. Like its like it looks exhilarating. I definitely would want to be part of it one of these days. Reporter he suggested creating a designated space for sideshows so that people can do it safely instead of trying to shut it down. And she agrees. I feel like maybe if there was space for that specific activity, where its like a little more regulated. Reporter opd says they do still want people to enjoy the city during Cinco De Mayo, but they say they want people to do it in a respectful and responsible way. In other news tonight, an encouraging update from that double shooting in san jose that seriously injured two Police Officer os on thursday. The Department Said the officers that was in Critical Condition is recovering tonight from a second successful surgery. The other officer who was shot has already been released from the hospital. Now to the latest on the College Campus protests over the war in gaza. Thousands of uc alumni have signed a letter saying they will not donate anymore of their own money until the system divests from companies that are tied to israel. Signatures include alumni from a number of campuses, including berkeley. The open let ser also asking for protection for students, staff, and faculty. In the north bay, the president of Sonoma State University is calling demonstrators there antisemitic in a letter, something students deny. The press democrat reported that demonstrators say president mike lees letter has opened them up to potential violence. Unlike most other university, sonoma state has not called in Law Enforcement to forcibly remove demonstrators. And with graduation season getting underway, there are still a lot of questions about if universities will carry on as planned, move their ceremony, or cancel them all together. Amanda has that story. Reporter tensions escalating at the university of virginia. Protesters are removed as Police Dismantle the encampment by force. An Emergency Alert posted by security calls the protest unlawful. A campus crackdown also at university of michigan with this overnight clash between police and demonstrators. That heavy security in stadium islis as well today for graduates at the universitys Commencement Ceremony. Propalestinian protesters paraded through the graduating class. Amid all this campus unrest were still here, were still fighting, and were going to be fighting until our demands are met. Reporter graduation season is underway with ceremonies at Indiana University and yukon. But for many grads there may be no pomp and circumstance. Columbia universitys celebration could be in jeopardy. That would be another sting for the graduates who already missed oud on their 2020 high School Celebrations because of the pandemic. For those of you who are seniors, youre finishing college the way you started, online. Usc is among those universities that has moved its Commencement Ceremony off cam fous the l. A. Coliseum, but they will have to share the stadium with previously booked events. The bay bridge will twinkle again, but its going to take a little while. Well let you know when its expected to light back up when we come back. And later, levi stadium hosting a different type of Football Game tonight as paypal park wasnt big enough to hold all the fans that came out to see the earthquakes take on lafc and all its international superstars. A little rain didnt stop the chinese cultural district from putting on their street fair in San Franciscos sunset parkside neighborhood today. Mayor london breed stopped by to unveil a mural titled people of taraville. Your theme this year is moving Forward Together, i cannot think of a better way to elevate this message than what this mural behind me represents, community, coming together, and moving Forward Together in this particular neighborhood. Local artists painted the mural with the help of feedback from more than 1,000 visitors of taraville. It has been a year since the lights on the bay bridge cables went dark, although the bay bridge itself continues we can still see it at night, its just not the same. And after more than 10 million in donation, the switch will be flipped on once more. But not immediately. The art nonprofit illuminate is behind the installation. The founder, ben davis, says that what was originally supposed to be just a twoyear display turned into ten year, and some of the lights began to lose their luster. The bay bridge is a really harsh environment for electronic, and so they were suffering. Rather than let them decay into oblivion, which is a bad look for San Francisco, we did the responsible thing, we took them town and set about bringing them back. People did like the lights enough to donate the 10. 5 million for the new and improved version. Davis says theyre building the materials for that now, and the lights should be up and running next year. So a few months away. But for more on the weather we bring in darren peck. We got a little bit of rain left, but i want to hear more about this warmup as well. Yeah, thats going to be a big difference by the time we get to tend of this next week. A review on today first, because this was an interesting day in terms of the amount of rain that we got and tim pacts that we had. Showed you some of that on the roadways. Look what the storm looked like coming in. 24 hours ago thats a very impressive area of low pressure sitting off the coast. If you look at it two other way, when you look at it in water vapor, you can see this was a deep and impressively strong area of low pressure. One other way to visualize it, if we put the center on it, you can look back at the records on those things and the north american ensemble forecast system has a catalog within the database to be able to visualize where this one was on intensity compared to all the other ones going back to 1979. And this one is pretty much on the top of the scale for early may. In other words, since 1979, this was one of the strongest areas of low pressure on record in that period. And when you factor in this thing brought in a pretty good cold front, you get an area of low pressure that strong, it throws the atmosphere out of balance. You can develop a strong cold front, which this one did. Look where the rain was, right on that edge, and that was what got pushed right through the bay this morning. Showed up in the late Morning Hours and went into the early afternoon. And that was the main event. Thats when we got these rainfall totals. And those rainfall numbers, if you do the comparison for what the average is for entire month of may, just about all of them beat it. So lets just put the percentages on there. San francisco in particular, we got in one day today we got 131 of what the average is for the whole month. We didnt break records for today. If you look back at may 4th, since weve been keeping records, each one of these cities has had rainier days on may 4th. So theres all kinds of ways to parse the statistics here. I think the fact that we got more than a months average rainfall in one day is probably the best story teller on how impactful this was if you didnt have issues on the road. A lot of people did. And the flood advisories were quite numerous this morning for pretty much the entire bay on roadways. So what happens next . Well, we watch a few stragglers off the coast. This systems not done. Theres going to be some pretty decent little downpour, but none of them are going to be able to be onshore. When we look at tomorrow from 8 00 a. M. On, were done, only blue sky. That only tells a small part of the story. No rain tomorrow, blue sky. But were not warming up a whole lot. Onshore winds are going to pick up. So with 30mileanhour winds at time, 25mileanhour gusts for most of us, take the daytime highs now and put those winds on them and youve got a windchill factor. Its going to feel more like mid to upper 50s again tomorrow. If you want that warmup that andrea was talking about, watch the transition. Im going to jump ahead from sunday, and were going to go straight to thursday. Watch the whole color scheme changes. Low 80s for inland valleys. And the number that i think maybe usually drives the point home is when San Francisco gets into the mid to upper 70s. Thats what were doing by thursday and friday. In the sevenday forecast you can see how that plays out. Oakland 80 on thursday. Theres a cooldown next weekend thatll get us san jose only down to 82 but many other locations will drop about ten degrees from that warmup on thursday and friday. Even the beaches are going to be nice with mid to upper 60s for daytime highs. The saint mary gaels are known for their strong hoops team, but they competed far National Championship in another sport. And rain delays pushed the as and giants games back, but when it was time to play, one Bay Area Team probably hoped the storm would last a little bit longer. Sports is coming up ne did my legs shrink . I can move them. I mean, i knew Alaska Airlines premium class had extra legroom but this. This feels different. Okay. Crazy idea. On the count of 3. Im going to try and cross my. Ohhhhhhhhhhh boyy thats nice. Woooooo all right a weird saturday for both bay area baseball teams. Rain delays in oakland and philly made for a long afternoon for both squads. Couldnt have gone worse for the giant, but well start with the good. A magical saturday for the as, and theres reba, the as official grounds dog helping with the rain delay. So cute. There was a lot of thunder in the bats. Third inning, brent rook we er with a home run to left. And its rooker again for another deep ball to left. A tenrun inning for the as, and they are cruising. By the way, the last a to hit two homers in the same inning, mark mcgwire in 1996. It got even better, not for rooker but for rookie brett harris. He hits his First Major League home run in just his second game of his career, then he does it again in the sixth. A two home run performance for harris in his only second career game. I dont know whos more excited harris or his family. The as win big, 204. Theyll look to take their second sweep in a row on sunday. Well, on the other hand, it was a nightmare of a day for the giants. After an hour long delay in philly, keaton nguyen got the start, didnt get a lot of help from his defense here. First inning, a ball gets away from estrada. Made it 40 phillies. That was it for nguyen. Didnt get better in the second. Tom fur my, hes filling in behind the plate for an injured patrick bailey. Bailey on the sevenday il with a concussion. That wild pitch gets away. A frustrating loss for the giants as they go down 143. Well, to some mls action. The quakes at levi stadium hosting lafc. Didnt take long for san jose to light up the scoreboard. Off the set piece, rodriguez score taufs header to make it 1nil. The quakes take a 3nil lead in the second half and pick up three points with a 31 win. Its the second win of the season for san jose. Well, saint marys competed for a National Championship on saturday but not in a sport you normally think about when it comes to the gaels. The mens Club Rugby Team lost just one match all season looking to complete a great year with a title. They are facing navy in the National Championship and the gaels led from the start, but a late push from navy made it close at the end. Saint marys needed a stop there, and they got it. The gaels kick it dead to end the match. The gaels are your National Champions in rugby. Well, still to come, the timber wolves and the nuggets kicked off the western conference semifinals in the nba. Well show you who jumped out the a 10 series lead. Plus, were off to the races, a photo finish at Churchill Downs today. The dramatic finish from the 150th fierceness was the 31 favorite heading into the kentucky derby, and although he got off to a fast start, there was a stunning finish at Churchill Downs. And they were off for the 150th running of the kentucky derby. This ended up being a threehorse race. Down the stretch it was mystik dan trying to hang on, sierra leone and forever young trying to close in, and its a photo finish. Take a look at the replay here. By a hair, mystik dan on the inside is the winner. Sierra leone takes second and forever young third. That was one of the closest finishes in the history of the derby. In the nba, Anthony Edwards and the timberwolves. Edwards did it all. In the third he comes up with a huge block, and that leads to an easy dunk for karlanthony us towns on the other end. Turns around and hits the jumper. A playoff career high and franchise postseason record with 43 points. The timberwolves take game one 10699. And in golf, third round of the pga cj cup, byron nelson.
