Administrators say layoffs and School Closures are likely coming. Putting the bond measure on the november ballot. This will be the largest bond measure in the districts history. However, it would only cover a fraction of what is needed. And as the district grapples with their own budget, help is now finally on the way for educators and staff who simply cannot afford to live or work in the city. And currently the average rent for a single bedroom apartment is 2,900 right here in the city of San Francisco. Today the Mayors Office of the Community Housing held a lottery drawing to see what teachers and staff will qualify for the districts first Affordable Housing project. The need is so great. 938 people applied for a coveted space at 135unit village on 43rd and judah in the sunset district. I had a chance to speak to one teacher who says landing a unit at that complex could decide whether or not he and others would stay in San Francisco or move and teach in another city. Reporter with the help of the bearded dragon. His name is uno, hes 3 years old. Reporter they find different ways to teach and encourage his students. And that is why they will call it bearded dragons, right . They have scales, right . So you can kind of feel the scales when you rub up. Having a class pet is teaching them the responsibility. How to be safe with it and how to be respectful of the others when they have the class pet. Reporter whether it is in the classroom or in the halls of malcolm x elementary, it is all about making meaningful connections. The kids mean everything to me. Reporter connections that form a bond when a teacher is able to live in the same city where he teaches. Those students can see you outside of school and in your normal daily routines. Reporter that is why when the San Francisco Unified School District and the city of San Francisco began building an Affordable Housing village for educators, he did not hesitate to apply. I applied the first day, i do not high. Reporter this is one of the units hes hoping to land. This is a nearly complete three bedroom home. Reporter Matt Franklin is the ceo of building the 135 unit. The rent will be below market and calibrated to market, so it is not too great for them to fill the household. This is my favorite space in the building with a million door view of the ocean. We know it is not easy for teachers. Its hard to live in the bay area on teacher pay. Reporter he lives in that harsh and expensive reality. The prices were definitely sold to have a one bedroom for 2,200 a month. I was like this is crazy. Reporter and he is so crazy that several teachers had to move to more affordable cities. For other educators, this is a chance to stay in San Francisco. And i think this will speak to all of retention, right . Especially for teachers that hook like myself. Reporter to continue to make that connection. You love the kids . I love the kids. Reporter the same kids he hopes to continue to teach at the school within the district and in the city he calls home. And the visit is just the first of three Affordable Housing projects to two others including a 63unit project in the Mission District and a 75unit complex in hayes valley. And as for our kindergartener teacher, we would try to find out, if not, he would get that lottery, but he did get his name drawn, so he made it to the next step and what he will get and his name got drawn in that next step. Oh man, wouldnt it be lucky though . That looks like the best class. And hes a part of the class, their pet lizard and where they would have mindfulness and meditating for ten minutes. And they are incredible teachers in the bay area of San Francisco. Yes, they need to keep it. Absolutely. What a great story. Thank you. All right, another check of our breaking stories right now. Protesters appear to be breaking down the propalestinian encampment. Now this is all happening within the past hour. And our chopper is capturing some of those taking down their tents, putting sleeping bags into piles. They started the protest more than three weeks ago to divest from companies doing business for israel. But unlike the protest in ucla in this case, no Campus Police involved would move in. Instead it appears that the protesters are making the decision to end the encampment. We do have a crew there talking to demonstrators with calls out, well have more on this together as it comes in. And pushing for strict new rules on the selfcheckout technology. A new bill would force the grocery and drugstores to remove them unless they follow certain rules. That will include having an employee monitor the lanes and limiting customers to ten items or less today. The state senate, will join our newscast at that time that will happen in the south checkout lane, costing the industry about 10 billion. To figure out what is the way to adjust them that we ensure workers are safe. So we dont displace them and create a safe Shopping Experience in stores for consumer. Weve seen the Bay Area Stores voluntarily remove their selfcheckout lanes like the safeway in San Franciscos filamor neighborhood. A day after open ai showed off the latest chatgpt model, it was googles turn to unveil its latest Artificial Intelligence plans. Google shared how their new ai model called gemini 1. 5 can be used with this other app like g mail and photos. And with virtual teachers who could also answer questions about the material. Thats pretty incredible. One thing they did not explain though is how google will use it to learn more about its users. Just yesterday open ai, which is owned by microsoft, we should note, launched a faster model of chatgpt thats called 40 open ai claims they could carry conversations with users on uploaded photos, documents, charts. And it also now has realtime translation built in. A group is now suing the new law that would force the sale or ban. They also filed a similar lawsuit. The company says they had be impossible to divest at the platform as a separate entity for the rest of tiktok, which has one billion users worldwide. Meme stocks are soaring once again today. Its a thoughback to three years ago when struggling Companies Like gamestop and amc got some boost from social media. Gamestop stock price rose 74 yesterday and another 60 today. Sparking the run in a twitter post showing a single image of the man, sitting up in his chair. And the man who posted it is the investor keith gill. Also known as roaring kitty. He has not been active on twitter since 2021 when he and a group of amateur investors upended wall street. They pushed these stocks so much higher that the people who have bet against them were forced to buy their positions back and a lot of them lost big money. Gill has had his fair share of critics who claim he manipulated the market. In february of 2021, he was called to testify in front of the House Financial Services committee. And it was a strong day overall in the u. S. Markets with all the Major Industries making solid gains. The Biden Administration is raising tariffs on china. The department responded in a statement that they will defend their rule to ensure travelers could see the full price of a flight before they purchase a ticket. Meanwhile airports are facing a massive shortage of air traffic controllers. They are down about 3,000 employees. The federal Aviation Administration says they need to fill those positions within the next few months. The shortage will come amid reports of close calls between planes in new york and virginia earlier this year. President biden is raising tariffs on chinese goods and green technology. He says it is the level and uneven Playing Field to protect u. S. Workers. Skyler henry on the Election Year move thats drawing a response from his republican rival. Biden surrounded by Union Workers signed strong new tariffs, targeting chinese made goods and green technology. Because he says they are creating the uneven Playing Field. To make sure the workers, and the American Business corporations can compete and win in the industries of the future. Reporter the move will push their tax on chinese steel up to 25 . The semi conductors will be hit with a 50 tariff. Electric batteries will rise to 25 . Chinese evs will have a 100 tariff placed on them. We will never allow china to control the markets for these cars period. Reporter the new tariffs are a position change for President Biden who had previously slammed President Trump for taking the same action. Every single step has made it worse. Speaking outside the courtroom where he is on trial, claiming biden is late to the party. It is the suggest that i said. He was asked about his comments following the ceremony. Trump says they see the same response. Among those impacted, the battlegrounds of michigan and pennsylvania. Tay say they violate trade laws, promising to take action to protect their businesses. Straight ahead in sports, the wnba has a new franchise and a name and a logo. They found paul, you would have laughed today. Then you looked at the other camera and it was completely gray. It depends on which camera and plenty of sunshine, nope, its gone. Nevermind. Were in the middle of the changeover right now as the fog is spreading away from the coast. This is what we expect and what we are going to see for the next seven, probably ten days or so. Not much change in the big picture. The area is close enough to nudge the storm track well to the north, but far enough away that the winds in the upper levels are overcoming the on shore breeze and just a general quiet weather pattern that will prevail throughout the next several days. Which means the fog is going to do their usual back and forth dance and their temperatures will not change a whole lot. Pretty similar to where we were today in the 50s, the 60s, the 70s, the usual spread here. Only 57 degrees at half moon bay. San francisco will return to the low 60s after yesterday, making it to 59. Temperatures climbed to the mid to upper 70s in santa rosa and san jose and again, almost identical temperatures in stored tomorrow. Maybe a degree or two warmer in the santa clara valley. After we get rid of the morning fog. It will spread across the bay and make a big push to begin the day on wednesday. Gone by 8 00, 9 00 or so. The exception might be the north bay where they might take 10 00 for the visibilities to improve. It will take until midday for the fog to back all the way up to the coast. Like today, maybe a little bit of sunshine peeking through the clouds if they retreat just a bit off the coastline. But that will be a short lived pattern. The fog will be surging back in by this time tomorrow. Mostly in the low to mid50s, just a cool spot dipping down barely below 50 degrees into the upper 40s. Then the highs tomorrow, exactly where we were today. And the santa clara valley, likely to reach up into the low 80s. A few degrees warmer today. Also 80 degrees for santa rosa and the temperatures around 80 degrees, forecasting 81 degrees for livermore, right around 80 degrees. Maybe a few degrees warmer today and then maybe it will be optimistic. About 30 to 45 minutes of sunshine will make a big difference there. Temperatures in San Francisco up to the mid60s, exactly normal. And then in the middle portion of the 70s for most of the north bay and the warmer spots that are reaching into the upper 70s by tomorrow afternoon. The wind is not going to be a big factor to start the day, but they are going to pick up throughout the rest of wednesday. Some stronger gusts will be making their way through the delta at any point over the next several days, all the way through the weekend. The strongest gusts will trigger Late Afternoon right around this time again on wednesday. But even the strongest gusts will be in the 20 to 25 miles an hour range. Looking farther down the line because we are getting closer to memorial day weekend. Its now 13 days away. And the 8 to 14day outlook Prediction Center shows are almost exactly average temperatures over the next several days. Replaced by slightly below normal temperatures as we head towards late may. Something well continue to monitor as we get closer to the next holiday weekend. A lot of folks are looking forward to the unofficial day of summer. Well let you know when everything involves in the forecast. Not much has changed. Inland temperatures in the 70s across the board and the warmer spots reaching up to above 80 degrees. Very little changed around the bay. Tomorrow is likely the warmest day for most of the bay area within the bayside temperatures getting up to the 70s, hovering in the mid to upper 60s throughout weekend. You want consistency . Head for the coast. The clouds, theyre tough to shake. Keeping temperatures within two degrees of each other on any daytoday basis. For 58 on the coolest days to around 60 degrees for the highs tomorrow. Thats about as consistent as it gets with this weather pattern. You just need to be stuck in place, but its not a bad place to be stuck. All right, thanks, paul. Time for a check ahead at 6 00. We will switch over to sara donchey. Hi, ryan. Coming up new at 6 00, we know the bay areas homelessness crisis is a problem with no simple straightforward solutions and only so much money to go around. In san jose, there is a fight with how the city is spending their dollars. Why some think the mayor is missing the mark by focusing on the quick fix. And plus a frustrating case of deja vu in oakland. A mom and daughter had just installed alarms after thieves broke into their clothing store. And now their message to city leaders after they were ransacked yet again. The news at 6 00 coming up in ten minutes. For now, lets head to vern with a look at sports. All right, sara, the nfl up top. At long last, the 2024 season is trickling out with the schedule. How about the 49ers . They open up at home with monday night football and a very familiar foe on the other side with Northern California roots. Aaron rodgers will be making his return. Rodgers from chico made his jets debut on monday night football last season before suffering a tendon injury in the snap of the game. That season ending injury is a result of the bills, now the 49ers. He wont be short on motivation come september. The last time rodgers faced the niners is the last playoff game with the packers. San francisco came back in the Fourth Quarter to set up the walkoff field goal, which set the niners to the nfc championship. Rodgers record is 67 all time against the niners, and he has lost all four playoff meetings. The full nfl schedule will be released tomorrow night. We told you the top of the newscast, well do it again. The wnba franchise. Say hello to golden state valkries of the regular season. Moving pictures are on the late show. Valeries and wearing their series uniform for the first time this season. Theyve got more bad news today. An mra revealed structural damage to lees left shoulder. He was placed on the injured list yesterday after suffering a dislocated shoulder in subpoenaeds game against the reds. Lee will get a Second Opinion later this week to decide it if surgery is needed. And this is unbelievable. The mariners shot when fouled. That is the landing area where the fans were in the stands. This guy came up with it. Okay, souvenir. A nice keepsake. But wait a minute, the very next pitch. Another foul ball thats headed to the same spot. Now look what happened. He got another one. A foul catch on backtoback pitches. Come on. He should not have to pay for a brew in emerald city again or at least that ballpark. I would like to think that he would not need to be there for the rest of the game. I dont think so. I think the fans, they are just chipping in to help them out. What a feat. And they need to buy a Lottery Ticket right now. No kidding. What a moment. Im glad its well documented. Thanks, vern. Still ahead here at 5 00, a 91yearold woman with a passion for bowling and her family. Lift the clouds off of. Virtual weather, only on kpix and pix . A slow network is no network for business.
