Former president donald Trump Meet for the first time ever in what could be their only president ial debate of the election cycle. Can they sway voters in a race that is Neck And Neck . The Cbs Evening News starts now. We are just hours away from the show down america has been waiting for. Kamala harris takes on Donald Trump on the Debate Stage good evening. I am norah odonnell in New York and thank you for being with us. This is where it is happening, at philadelphias national Constitution Center, and it is hard to overstate how pivotal tonights performances from the Vice President and former president could be. Election day is eight weeks from tonight, and right now, the race is all tied up nationally, and in a handful of Battleground States. Tens of millions of americans are expected to tune in to see the candidates argue their positions in what could be their only debate. The stage is set. You see the podiums there. Harris chose the podium on the right. Trump will be on the left. We have Team Coverage of this historic Night And Cbss Weijia Jiang will start us off with a preview from philadelphia. Good evening, weijia. Reporter good evening to you, norah. These candidates have a massive Spotlight Tonight and all of the pressure that comes along with it, especially since this could be their only chance to square off with no agreement yet for another debate. All this comes as the race to the White House is incredibly close. Tonight, after months of fighting from afar comrade Kamala Harris wants to sacrifice our wealth, kill the economy. So hear me when i say, i know Donald Trumps type. Reporter Vice President harris and former President Donald Trump will meet in person for the first time on this stage, inside philadelphias national Constitution Center. The two nominees will stand at podiums about 6 feet apart. There will be no live audience and microphones will be muted if it is not their turn to talk. Harris team fears that will limit moments when she can directly engage with her opponent, like this one from four years ago. Mr. Vice president , i am speaking. I am speaking. Reporter tonight will be harris first president ial debate and trumps seventh. She has been studying his past performances and getting advice from hillary clinton. She doesnt have the look, she doesnt have the stamina. Reporter who was the recipient of trumps attacks in three debates. The Trump Team is expecting tough talk from harris too. She showed off her skills in the 2019 primaries, criticizing thencandidate Bidens Record on busing and school desegregation. You also worked with them to oppose busing. And you know, there was a Little Girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools. And she was bused to school every day. And that Little Girl was me. Reporter but cbs News Polling shows harris has work to do tonight. More than a third of voters in three Battleground States do not know what she stands for. They want to know her why, what is the motivation. Shes not just the Vice President of the united states but why does she want to be President Of The United States . Reporter trump got advice from his allies, too. I think President Trump would be wise to explain how he would change the country, stay away from the personal stuff. Reporter tonight, aides to Vice President harris tell me she is feeling great and she is ready to call out any lies that come from trump and argue it is time to turn the page. The former president is expected to Paint Harris as a san francisco liberal who is out of touh with voters and incapable of change. Norah . Norah Weijia Jiang in philadelphia tonight, thank you. For more on whats at stake, lets bring in chief white House Correspondent Nancy cordes and chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett. And major, what about that . Trumps advisors may want him to focus on policy but he loves the personal attacks. He does, but these are nervous times within the Trump Campaign. Some of that has crept into the former president himself. Why is it a nervous time for the Trump Campaign . They know in the best polls, internal and external, they are close. They are not ahead. They were once ahead, they have lost the lead and clawed their way back to a tie. They know Vice President harris has more money, more enthusiasm, more volunteers. All of that works to her benefit. How do you block that . How do you rearrange this race . They basically have given this nervous Candidate Something that calms him down. A mantra. What is it . Inflation, immigration, world on fire. Whether you agree with those characterizations are not, the Trump Campaign believes all three of those issues work to his benefit and no matter how difficult is 90 minutes get tonight, always go back to inflation, immigration, world on fire. That is the way they want to try to define harris as the incumbent, not the change agent. They want trump to reclaim that ground. Norah Nancy Cordes joins us as well. Nancy, but despite that, the Vice President has to be preparing for personal, nasty attacks from Donald Trump. He has done it in the past. Her Campaign Advisors say she is preparing for the kind of attacks that she knows will come her way, that she is too liberal, too soft on crime, that shes too tough on crime. He has actually made both arguments so they say she will be prepared for either one. Yes, she will factcheck him if he says things that arent true but they say she cant spend the whole Night Factchecking because she has got work to do defining herself, explaining her positions, explaining who she is to an electorate that says it still doesnt know enough. And norah, i am told that no matter how tonight goes, they will be pushing for at least one more debate between harris and trump. Norah we do know that voters want to hear more about policy and what they will do in the future. Nancy cordes, Major Garrett, thank you so much. And our coverage of the president ial debate begins tonight at 8 00 eastern right here on cbs followed by a live simulcast of the debate at 9 00 and then we will have cbss expert analysis. So we will see you right at 8 00 p. M. Terrifying moments on the taxiway at Atlantas Hartsfieldjackson international airport when two Passenger Jets collided. When its Wing Tip clipped the tail of a Delta Regional Jet that was sitting on an adjacent taxiway. The whole tail of that. Reporter the impact almost took the smaller Planes Tail completely off. Reporter some passengers on the bigger plane, like stephen shelton, said they barely felt the collision. The whole plane vibrated. This is one of the bayous that we are worried about as the Storm Surge flooding pushes up into those communities from the gulf of mexico, the Lieutenant Governor assures me that the levees will hold, but norah, there are still some communities here that are under a mandatory evacuation order. Norah wishing them the very best. Dave malkoff, thank you very much. So lets get the latest track on where francine is heading. Cbss Lonnie Quinn is here in the studio. Good evening, lonnie. Reporter nice to be here, norah. The Track Hasnt changed at all. This will still be louisianas hurricane even though right now, it is a lot closer to texas and louisiana. When you look at the satellite picture, it is about 150 miles offshore from the brownsville, texas, but it is forecasted to make that arc and start moving to the northeast so we now believe it is a category 1 as opposed to category 2, Making Landfall sometime later in the day on wednesday. Big rainmaker moving into the Tennessee Valley all the while, putting Rain Down but losing its tropical characteristics the farther inland it goes. So the question is, how much rain does the System Hold . Its a little bit weaker but the Rainfall Numbers are still pretty impressive out there. Yesterday, i thought we would be seeing 612, ive trimmed that a little bit, i think it is more likely a 510 Inch Range that includes new orleans. Freshwater flooding and Storm Surge of course are the biggest concerns with this storm. Norah, that is the latest. Norah Lonnie Quinn, thank you very much.
